“It does.”
Act as if what you do makes a difference. William James
Building Communities is part of Barton Malow’s core purpose and is integral to what we are and what we do. But what does Building Communities mean? We asked Barton Malow employees what Building Communities means to them. Although our employees are as diverse as the organizations we support, the common themes of “giving back” and “helping those less fortunate” were clear. I am proud of Barton Malow for many reasons, but I am mostly proud of our employees for they exemplify our core purpose every day. I invite you to support the organizations described in this issue of Marvels and to watch the video so you can see for yourself what Building Communities means to us.

Barton Malow employees have a rich history of serving the community, and those in our Florida offices are no exception. Our long-standing involvement with Frontline Outreach and Give Kids The World organizations are just two examples. Frontline Outreach With a mission of providing leadership to disadvantaged youth in Central Florida, Frontline Outreach is a non-profit organization that enhances education and prepares children to follow their dreams and build futures that are solid and bright. Barton Malow’s support of Frontline Outreach began in 2008, when staff donated resources and time to construct a 44’ x 44’ Family Pavilion that now provides covered outdoor shelter and activity space for up to 140 students and members. Since this partnership, Barton Malow employees continue their involvement through annual benefits, adopting families during the holidays and an internship program that provides students with hands-on work shadowing experience. Frontline’s vision to see each child for his/her unlimited potential is impressive! Frontline Outreach President, Arto Woodley recently reminded us of how just a little can go such a long way “your contributions allow us to stand here today and watch as 10 of our children are now becoming Frontline Alumni, and starting on the next stage of their lives - as College students!”
Give Kids The World The Give Kids The World Village (GKTW) is a themed resort set on 70-acres, complete with over 140 villa accommodations, entertainment attractions, and whimsical venues especially tailored to put smiles on the faces of children that are dealing with life-threatening illnesses, and their families. GKTW has held a special place in the hearts of Barton Malow Florida employees for several years. Staff members happy to provide construction services for two projects on the site. The Gallery of Hope was the transformation of an existing building into a fully interactive Center that tells the story of GKTW, its partners, and its founder. The Star Tower project provided a new addition to the existing Castle of Miracles building. Upon arriving at the Village, each child visits the Castle and writes their deepest wish onto a gold star. Then, with the aid of animation, the star “magically” disappears. The next morning when the family returns, their star is on the ceiling! No star is ever removed from the ceiling, as family members often return once their child has passed on, to find their star. By building the new Tower, Barton Malow helped to provide space for an additional 10 years worth of stars and wishes. In addition to the GKTW expansion, Barton Malow employees volunteer time and resources to this amazing organization. From monetary donations to running in the annual 5K Fun Run and helping to decorate the kids’ villas for the holidays, we are committed to not only building facilities, but to Building Communities.

As a builder, Barton Malow also pays close attention to building and maintaining healthy lives. With its mission to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke, the American Heart Association (AHA) is a natural fit for Barton Malow to support. Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer of American adults, and the American Heart Association aims to eliminate cardiovascular disease and stroke. Specific goals of the organization are to improve cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20% while reducing deaths from cardiovascular disease and stroke by 20% by 2020. Barton Malow has supported the American Heart Association for over 20 years and will continue to play a key role in helping AHA meet its lofty 2020 goals. As a long-standing partner in the Metro Detroit Heart Walk, Barton Malow sponsors the 5k fun run and mans a booth at the event. Steve Lorenzo, Barton Malow Senior Project Director serves on the Executive Leadership team for AHA, which was responsible for recruiting 90 companies as major supporters for AHA last year. Steve also leads Barton Malow’s in-house efforts for the Heart Walk with the help of nearly 20 Barton Malow team captains. Don Davis, Steve’s predecessor on the Executive Leadership team, now serves on the Southeast Michigan Board of Directors for AHA, playing a strategic role in outreach and fundraising in MetroDetroit. Additional Barton Malow activities in support of AHA include an employee planned and played annual charity hockey game as well as company-wide participation in jeans days for donations to the American Heart Association. Promoting healthy lifestyles and a spirit of giving is part of the Barton Malow culture as is witnessed by equally generous support from individual employees and at a corporate level.

BUILDING TEAMS BUILDING HOMES by Jim Nahrgang
Founded in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has helped build and repair more than 600,000 homes throughout the world. Aligning with Barton Malow’s core purpose, “Building with the American Spirit: People, Projects, and Communities,” the organization engages local and national volunteers to partake in builds that effect surrounding communities with the overall goal of providing low-income families with comfortable and affordable housing. As a company that provides professional construction services for some of the biggest names in national Healthcare, Higher Education, Manufacturing, Energy Services, and more, Barton Malow strives to work equally as hard in our own backyard. For over twenty years, Barton Malow has proudly shared and supported Habitat for Humanity’s mission by sponsoring builds in many cities where we have offices throughout the United States. Barton Malow has benefited drastically from Habitat for Humanity builds. Using these experiences not only as team building exercises, they also give first-hand building perspectives to many of our non-field employees and summer LEAPS Interns. “The Habitat builds really give our LEAPS Interns an idea of what we do as a company, both in the field and in our surrounding communities,” said Human Resource Specialist and LEAPS Program Manager, Meghan Turner, “It is important for them to understand that we highly value working in our communities and give back … it is a part of who we are.” As much as Barton Malow benefits from Habitat builds, Habitat for Humanity in-turn receives a superior team of professional builders on each project. From interiors to concrete work, Barton Malow employees take time and pride in making sure end results live up to high-quality standards. Aligning ourselves with Habitat for Humanity and contributing to our surrounding communities has helped play an important role in shaping Barton Malow into the company it is today.

by Doug Maibach
The United Way has strong history with over 125 years in existence, and it is recognized as the largest privately funded non-profit in the world. So it’s no wonder that Barton Malow chooses the organization as one of its primary beneficiaries. The organization’s goals of improved education, financial stability and promoting healthy lives are achieved by mobilizing communities around the world to advance the common good. In 2008, the LIVE UNITED campaign was introduced as a call to action for everyone to be part of the positive change. Barton Malow has risen to that call for over 60 years providing financial and volunteer support for United Way. The wide reach and consistent positive results that the United Way has achieved are the main motivators for Barton Malow’s support of the organization. Additionally, United Way’s philosophy of giving a hand up rather than a hand out aligns well with the hard-working culture of Barton Malow. Following in the path of our former patriarch Ben Maibach Jr. path, Barton Malow executives continue to lead by example in financial and volunteer support for United Way. To encourage employee engagement in the LIVE UNITED campaign, Barton Malow offers payroll deduction for employee donations. To kick off the company’s annual giving campaign each year, a spokesperson from United Way presents to Barton Malow at a company-wide meeting to share the accomplishments and everambitious goals of the organization. Living United we can make a difference.

BUILDING GOODNESS by Jack Crombie
On one day each year in April, The University of Virginia Darden School of Business students along with local contractors, volunteers, and homeowners rehabilitate several homes in the Charlottesville Community. The organization that is responsible for this is Building Goodness in April (BGiA) which exemplifies Barton Malow’s core purpose of Building Communities. Barton Malow is a proud member and supporter of this organization. BGiA was founded as Christmas in April-Charlottesville in 1991. In 2007, the organization changed its name to Building Goodness in April and affiliated with the Building Goodness Foundation to ensure as much benefit as possible for the Charlottesville, Virginia community. Barton Malow has partnered with and supported this organization for over a decade.

Student Commitment BGiA, a committee within the Building Goodness Foundation, is managed by the students of the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and a Steering Committee which is made up of volunteers from the community. The students shoulder complete responsibility for all fundraising needs, community partnerships and home rehabilitation efforts. Community Focused BGiA’s mission is to rehabilitate the homes of low-income, elderly and disabled families. Their work keeps people living in warmth, safety and independence to prevent homelessness and to revitalize Charlottesville neighborhoods. Every year in April, BGiA volunteers rehabilitate 8-16 homes in the Charlottesville community. This sustainable impact is achieved by partnering with individuals and businesses, like Barton Malow, in the local community. Barton Malow Commitment Barton Malow has participated in BGiA by providing volunteers for Build Day, leading Build Day preparation, local house inspections, supplying materials, involving subcontractors, and through membership on the BGiA Steering Committee. April 2012 was no exception. Barton Malow employees planned, managed, and worked on two home makeovers. Work included painting, electrical, plumbing, roofing, carpentry, fencing, doors, flooring, appliances, landscaping, insulation, masonry and retaining walls. “Build Day is a great way to give back to the community, says former BGiA Steering Committee member and Barton Malow senior vice president Phil Kirby. The Darden students work hard all year on fundraising, finding local business partners and selecting homes to rehab. I’m pleased to be a part of this and proud that the majority of Virginia-based Barton Malow employees have participated in BGiA.”
