Need a one-million-pound stamping press moved and set within 0.005” per 80 feet tolerance? We can do that. Have a mass foundation requiring 1,500 yards of concrete be poured in a day? We can do that. Need more than 2,000 lineal feet of drywall finished in a single day? We can do that, too. For decades, Barton Malow’s yard facility in Oak Park, Michigan has been the heart of our self perform operations.

Housing our steel fabrication shop, as well as our fleet and equipment dispatch center, the yard is the go-to resource for Barton Malow’s selfperform project needs. With equipment ranging from rough terrain cranes, hydraulic gantry systems, man-lifts and an array of concrete placement machinery to smaller hand tools used in interior construction, our skilled trades are assured of having the tools and equipment they need to keep your

project running safely, while meeting and exceeding your expectations for quality and productivity. While Barton Malow has invested significant resources over the years in our equipment, in the end, they are simply tools and pieces of machinery. Our quality tradespeople are the key to utilizing the equipment to its greatest potential, driving the building process, bringing your project to life.

VALUE-ADDED PARTNERSHIP

by Jeff Machota

Not only is partnering with Acoustic Ceiling & Partition Company (ACP) an advantage to Barton Malow, the joint venture brings maximum value to our client. Significant savings in time and money has been realized by strategically combining individual strengths to fit the needs of the new $140 million Hilton Columbus Downtown, located in Columbus, Ohio.

time is of the essence. By using an AutoSlam system, trim installation runs 50% faster than conventional methods. Equipment precisely measures and precuts, while applying compound for drywall finishers, a HUGE time saver – as opposed to doing it by hand. In comparison, a traditional carpenter averages 400 lineal ft. per man/per day. Our drywall finishers average 2,000!

Self-performing Interior Services: Our resources have been structured in a way that Barton Malow guides project supervision and overall management, while ACP provides proven local tradesmen and yard support.

Cast-in-Place Ceilings – Drywall Finishing: Much faster than traditional applications that include framing the ceiling, hanging drywall, and then finishing with joint compound – we recommended the use of Cover Coat, a USG product that saves by eliminating the need for those materials and additional labor. Applied by an industrial sprayer and hand-finished, it provides a flat, paintable surface to the face of cast-in-place concrete.

Although it may not be the services we are providing that are out of the ordinary, the WAY in which services are being performed make this project shine! Time Equals Money Experience in performing a broad range of projects sets us apart, and allowed the opportunity to make recommendations. As a better way of doing things, interiors services being performed include improved techniques for conventional work: Drywall Corner Finishing: With 532 rooms, and over 2.5 million sf (a typical house requires 12,000 sf ) of drywall,

In-Wall Backing: Cost savings is being recognized in the labor of wall fastenings by utilizing DANBACK™. Requiring incrementally less time for installation, the product arrives pre-cut and pre-notched, also eliminating the need for an on-site woodshop. Constantly updating and adapting methods is how we stay competitive, and that is exactly how we are providing value on a project of this magnitude.

SYNERGY OF SELF PERFORMANCE

by Joe Blanchette and Matt Rojem

Barton Malow is playing a key role on the Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) team for the new Cornerstone South Bed Tower at Crittenton Hospital Medical Center. Barton Malow and Frank Rewold & Son are serving jointly as the project builders and Barton Malow is also self-performing the civil, concrete and interiors work for the project. HarleyEllis Devereaux is the architect on the project. Early Involvement Our self perform team was involved early in the Crittenton project contributing during the design phase with first-hand knowledge of the work to be done. This input helped streamline our team’s approach to achieving the main goals of Safety, Quality, and Production. It also led to the purchase of new state-of-the-art safety equipment including the MillerEdge Safety System, an engineered tie off for work on leading edges that are 6 feet or more above the ground. This purchase, as well as the purchase of two outrigger platforms for crane access, has made the project safer and more efficient. Civil Work Barton Malow’s civil work onsite included underground utilities, foundation excavation and backfill. An added benefit of self-performing civil work is that Barton Malow owns its own equipment. Barton Malow’s excavators that were on site for civil work were also used to move equipment and unload trucks, reducing the need for additional cranes. Concrete Experts Barton Malow’s concrete experts are self-performing the horizontal and vertical formwork, finishes and superstructure. Within seven months of the project starting, Barton Malow has performed the detailed prefabrication and installation of over 700 tons of rebar and has poured over 7,000 cubic yards of concrete. Interiors Work As the concrete work completes, Barton Malow’s interiors team will take over. Interiors work at the new bed tower will include coordinating and installing all interior finishes, metal studs, drywall, acoustic ceilings, doors, frames, hardware and millwork. Bundling the interiors services allows Barton Malow to have one point-ofcontact for the owner and better and more efficient coordination of the trades. The new 162, 840 SF bed tower features seven-stories and an elevator tower and bridge that will connect the new tower to the existing East Tower. Additional work on site includes a renovated loading dock as well as a supported bridge connecting the new bed tower to the parking structure Barton Malow recently completed. In large part due to the efficiency of our trades and quality of work put in place on previous projects for Severstal, Barton Malow earned the opportunity to extend our self perform services on Severstal’s Mill Modernization program at the steel facility’s Hot Strip Mill (HSM). Broken into several phases, the HSM Exit End Modification Project began with concrete demolition and foundation re-installation, which was competitively bid. Additional work included retooling of existing machinery and installation of state-of-the-art coil handling equipment. Overcoming Challenges The Hot Strip Mill is an operational facility. All Barton Malow’s work occurs in cooperation with the mill staff, both during hours of operation and over periodic scheduled outages. Unforeseen building and equipment conditions (some of the equipment had been in service more than 50 years) required Barton Malow to develop detailed rigging and critical lift plans on the fly in order to keep the project on track. Through effective manpower scheduling and constant communication with the mill staff, we were able to pull ahead the scope of work and reduce overall construction duration. Continuing with a 3-Bay Addition Work continues at the Hot Strip Mill with a 3-Bay Addition. Phase 1 includes the building addition, foundations and structural steel. Main tower feeds will also be put in place for new conveyor and sampler equipment to be installed in future phases. Streamlining the Process The Hot Strip Mill currently utilizes an overhead crane to pick steel coils off the line, placing them on trucks for transport. Once the modernization project is complete, the automated equipment will allow Severstal to pull steel coils off the exit end of the Hot Strip Mill, creating a much more accurate and efficient transfer of materials. Utilizing a conveyor system, the coils will be deposited onto trucks for delivery to the Pickle Line Tandem Cold Mill, streamlining the steelmaking process. For decades, Barton Malow has built its reputation upon the quality of our self perform trades. Our work at Severstal Dearborn is a great example of how quality work strengthens relationships.

the schools to the municipal and emergency response facilities. The expanded network is being used to facilitate emergency response communications, centralize and expand IT services offered by the county, and create a county-wide educational network for sharing and improving educational resources. We are in the early design phase for a county-wide video surveillance system which will save up front costs and establish standards to help emergency responders.

Interconnecting Communities Our project for the Charlevoix School District, Michigan for a fiber network to connect school facilities, wound up as a consortium between the school district and local agencies, setting the foundation for a high-speed network interconnecting many buildings – among them, schools, libraries, and city and county offices.

Ready for Game Day Our assignment on the Northern Arizona University Skydome renovation project included design of the infrastructure to support all audio/visual functions within the building. From video feeds for local and national TV broadcasts and video replay to the sound system for the arena and coaches’ headsets to the cabling infrastructure for the new scoreboards, Barton Malow in-house audio/visual experts worked in tandem with the client and other project subcontractors to have the arena ready and “wired” for game day.

When approached by the Livingston County, Michigan administration to design a fiber network to interconnect various emergency response facilities throughout the county, we leveraged the existing dark fiber installed by the school districts to not only stretch the grant dollars, but also connect

One Size Does Not Fit All We understand that one size fits all solutions are not successful - every project is unique. Our in-house audio/visual and security technology experts provide a customized and innovative approach for every project.

THE JOINT VENTURE TEAM

Acoustic Ceiling & Partition Company (ACP) and Barton Malow The joint venture team of Acoustic Ceiling & Partition Company (ACP) and Barton Malow brought several innovations to the Hilton Columbus Downtown project. One highly visible change was the extensive use of cordless tools. Of course, cordless tools are not a new invention. But this site has virtually eliminated 90% of extension cords with the implementation of cordless collated drywall screw guns, cordless drywall routers, cordless impact screw guns as well as gas driven concrete nail guns. Not only does it eliminate unsafe conditions, it provides a cleaner, professional appearance. Read the FULL ARTICLE on page 4.
