Dr. David Lloyd-Jones and His Collection
David Lloyd-Jones spent his early childhood in India. His father was an officer in the pre-independence Indian Army. At thirteen he was sent to Blundell's School, Tiverton, Devon, where he became Head of School and subsequently won a scholarship to St. John's College, Cambridge, where he read History. His subsequent doctorate was 'Charles Fourier's conception of social science'. He became an assistant at Glasgow University and then lecturer in politics and senior lecturer in 1968. Amongst his many students over his long teaching career was Charles Kennedy, later to become the leader of the Liberal Democrats. His former students speak very fondly of him, one saying '...his lectures on Rousseau were an inspiration'. This solicitous role made him an ideal adviser of studies. Glasgow was to be his home until his death last year.
lights and the walls lined with book laden cabinets surmounted by massed arrangements of art glass and pottery, passing the Edwardian portrait of a young girl (to will be offered in our Fine Paintings Sale in June) we are led into the large drawing room with its bowed window embellished with stained and leaded glass. This room is predominantly Art Nouveau in character with the stylish cabinet, retailed by a local Glasgow firm and the inlaid Shapland & Petter desk at the side window. Comfortable sofas and armchairs sit amidst tables laden with pots, glass and metal wares. The crowning feature of this room is the south west wall, entirely given over to books of the Art Nouveau period, with their covers facing out rather than the spines. This most imaginative wall paper is testament to the inventiveness of this period of book design.
Wherever he lived David created an extraordinary and unique series of interiors, first in his flat in Glasgow's west end and latterly in the Edwardian red sandstone house in Whittingehame Drive. This capacious space with its high ceilings and parquet floors, acts as a back drop for his amazing mise-en-scènes which have featured in so many books and magazines over the past few decades. 'Celtic Living' an early book of interiors, published by Thames and Hudson, was the first to feature the house anonymously. David was always a welcoming and charming host for many visitors over the years. Many generations of decorative art students at the University of Glasgow were welcomed through the door of 3 Whittingehame Drive. Art Fund members, Glasgow Art Club members and only quite recently members of the Decorative Art Society were all welcomed by David.
The dining room on the right of the hall is furnished in the Aesthetic manner with its large ebonised desk and associated furniture, strongly influenced by Japan. The room is dominated by an oil painting by Sir D.Y. Cameron (also included in the June sale) which hangs above the fireplace. Books of a slightly earlier date predominate here and a solid Edwardian extending dining table sits in the centre of the room, much of its top decorated with Aesthetic tiles.
A glimpse through the door of the porch gives a clue to the many visual treats in store. The sheer number of items, one placed carefully on top of another, in tottering piles, is overwhelming. For David the chase of the object was exciting and his regular visits to the famous Glasgow Barras yielded many of the early treasures. From the hall with its three Arts & Crafts
The kitchen beyond moves forward to the 1920s and 1930s, and contains ceramic works by some of the well known potters. Prints from the 1950s line the walls here. Finally the narrow and steep stairwell, lined with etchings and Japanese prints, leads to the bedrooms, furnished appropriately with Arts & Crafts bedroom furniture. Now the house is to be sold and the contents dispersed, let us hope that the objects that gave David so much pleasure will fall into equally enthusiastic hands and that these in turn will remind us of a much loved friend.

The design was inspired by a trip to New York in the late 1970s and possibly pays some homage to Mies van der Rohe’s Seagrams building.

Liberty & Co.
Figure 1: Liberty & Co.s’ Tudor building at its opening in 1924.
Liberty's was founded by Arthur Lasenby Liberty in 1875. Originally employed as a shop assistant at Farmer & Rogers India Shawl Warehouse, he used the ten years of experience he had gained there to open his own store on Regent Street. Utilising his interest and knowledge in Asian and Near and Far Eastern cultures, he sold ornaments, fabrics and curios from Japan and the East. The business was a success from the beginning and quickly expanded. Liberty soon realised the quality of the items he was sourcing from Japan and the East was deteriorating and decided and with demand outstipping supply

for quality fabric he commissioned his own from English dyers and manufacturers and had them import and hand block fabrics. The high quality which were achieved became known as 'Liberty Art Fabrics' and were used in for clothing and furnishings. Liberty's costume department opened in 1884 under the directorship of the architect and designer E.W. Godwin. Godwin's aim was to challenge the creations of Parisian fashion houses and create a home grown style - early clientele included artists of the PreRaphaelite movement and their circle including Ellen Terry and Oscar Wilde.

Liberty & Co also promoted the designs of key members of the Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau Movements including Archibald Knox. The promotion of these styles by Liberty's and other avant garde outlets helped them to achieve international recognition.
Throughout the 20th century, Liberty has continued to promote the work of many designers including Lucienne Day, Arne Jacobsen and Gio Ponti. Liberty fabrics have been used by designers such as Yves Saint Laurent, Bill Gibb, Jean Muir and Mary Quant and the shop today continues to promote and sell fashion and design of the highest quality.
Furniture from the Tudor Shop
The shop was engineered around three galleried light wells that formed the main focus of the building and emulated the great atrium spaces of Bon Marché and Printemps in Paris. Sir Arthur Liberty, who founded Liberty & Co. in 1875, wanted to create the feeling that you were walking around your own home so surrounding these wells were more intimate rooms which reflected the warren of rooms found in the original shop in Regent Street. Liberty's own workshops in Highgate made the wood panelling and

The following collection of Arts & Crafts furniture was all made in the early 1920s for Liberty & Co's magnificent Tudor building in Great Marlborough Street. The building was completed in 1924 and was built so that trading could continue while renovations were being completed on their adjacent premises in Regent Street. It was designed by Edwin Thomas Hall and his son Edwin Stanley Hall at the height of the 1920s fashion for the Tudor revival and constructed from the timbers of two 19th century men-of-war battleships: HMS Impregnable and HMS Hindustan. After the First World War a more reactionary attitude towards architecture and design was understandable and the Liberty board recognized the marketing advantage and reassurance to their customers of building in the sixteenth century manner. The new building would demonstrate craft of the highest quality and attention to detail and would be a reflection of the Arts & Crafts values of “truth to material” which had played such an important part in the foundation of the company and the goods that it sold.

a team of twenty carvers worked for eighteen months on the woodwork alone. Under the supervision of the architects a collection of furniture was made for the rooms and galleries to display the textiles, clothes and luxury goods the shop was so famous for. It is represented by a series of

tables, chests and display cabinets, all made in the sixteenth century style, with pegged construction and decorative details complementing the design details in the building. The finish is either a dark fumed, natural or limed finish, also a characteristic of the wood finish of the rooms in which they once stood. The first group is designed in a Tudor style, with substantial oak planked tops above pegged supports pieced with decorative panel, also seen on paneling and staircases in the main shop (figure 2). The second group also displays a 16th century aesthetic, with identical planked tops raised above cross framed supports. The chests of drawers and the magnificent hexagonal centre table have distinctive hand wrought iron handles and linenfold panelling, found in other

furniture still in situ. All the furniture was made in the firm's workshops in Highgate and demonstrates the same high levels of craftsmanship and attention to detail as the building itself. A photograph of the workshop in the 1920s (figure 3) shows a chest of drawers and a display cabinet being produced. Liberty & Co. has retained a core of pieces for its collection; however, a substantial selection of this historic furniture, now unsuitable for contemporary retailing, is offered here. Lyon & Turnbull will present the remaining pieces, designed by Sir Robert Lorimer, as part of their sale of Scottish Design on June 15th. The illustration opposite shows the new café at Liberty & Co’s Tudor building in 1924 open for business. The café, which no longer exists, was located in the basement and had as its focal feature a large stone fireplace with distinctive conical canopy. Shown in the picture are a group of small oak tables around which sat shoppers in need of refreshment. These tables were made for the shop and their design reflects the arched buttresses and roof pendants in the main atriums. The chairs, also in oak, were designed by Richard Riemerschmid, who had started to supply designs to Liberty ’s in the 1900s. The tea wares were made by Moorcroft, a regular supplier of wares to the shop, and were glazed in powder blue. Figure 4: Interior of the basement cafe, circa 1924

Scottish Design from 1860 Wednesday 15th June, 2011 33 Broughton Place, Edinburgh From the Aesthetic and Arts & Crafts Movements, through the Celtic Revival, Art Nouveau and the Glasgow Style to the present, Scotland has a rich heritage of excellence in craft and design. This heritage arguably reached its zenith at the turn of the 19th century when Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his circle became the foremost exponents of Art Nouveau in Britain, going on to influence the course of design history internationally. It is also remarkable however to reflect on the other great names produced by this small country. Gothic
MARGARET MACDONALD AND FRANCES MACDONALD COPPER CANDLESTICK, CIRCA 1897 Sold for £63,650 in November 2010
giants Bruce Talbert and Richard Norman Shaw; the Aesthetic designers Daniel Cottier and Christopher Dresser; and the Glasgow designers George Walton and Jessie M. King are just a handful of the many Scottish designers who went on to achieve international recognition. To celebrate this ongoing legacy Lyon & Turnbull will hold a new auction for summer 2011: Scottish Design from 1860 to the present day. The sale will encompass decorative arts and design from these diverse periods in the country's history and will reflect the skill and variety of manufacture across a wide range of materials, including ceramics, glass, jewellery, textiles, metalwork, drawings, prints, posters, books, manuscripts, furniture and pottery. One of the items consigned for the sale is this oak writing table, designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and made for Miss Cranston's Ingram Street tearooms in 1909. Miss Cranston, who owned and ran a number of Glasgow tea rooms, was Mackintosh's most supportive patron. Tea rooms played an important role in Glasgow society at the turn of the 20th century, unique places where people of different classes could meet and relax, and Miss Cranston was particularly successful. Mackintosh's first commission for Miss Cranston was to create a stencil for her Buchanan Street tea rooms in 1896. A few short years later he had been given sole responsibility for the interiors and furniture in her Argyle [1899], Ingram [1900] and Willow tea rooms [1903]. The complicated latticework between the legs is distinctive of Mackintosh's style and creates an elegant spatial construction beneath the working surface of the desk. The top of this desk would have originally held an arrangement of dividers, allowing it to be used by several ladies at a time. The current owner bought the table in the 1960s from Cooper & Co who owned the Ingram Street tea room. It has only recently been identified and included in Roger Billcliffe's catalogue raisonné. It will be offered in the sale in June with an estimate of £10,000-15,000.
