STADION ST. JAKOB-PARK

St. Jakob-Park Stadium – home of FC Basel 1893.

The architecture trails. Covering an area of only 37 km2, Basel can rightly claim to be a city of short distances. That is why we recommend the trails described on the following pages as an ideal means of tracking down the city’s architectural highlights. All three routes are centred on urban districts which, despite being in a process of transformation, still retain their own distinctive character. The trails are easy to follow either on foot or by public transport and can each be completed in two to three hours. A map at the end of the brochure shows the location of the most important buildings that are not on one of the three routes but, due to their significance, warrant inclusion in this guide. We hope that your journey will offer you fascinating insights into the world of contemporary architecture, urban development and the everyday lives of Basel’s population.

A key feature of the S端dpark building is its bold fenestration.

A triumphant symbiosis of art and architecture: the Fondation Beyeler.

A city brimming with contrasts. The trails will take you on a journey into the past spanning many epochs. There can be few other cityscapes where buildings dating back as far as the 15th century engage so harmoniously and vibrantly with the contemporary creations of internationally distinguished architects. Basel has one of the most beautiful and best-preserved historic centres in Europe. The city has nonetheless remained open to new ideas and, in recent decades, has evolved into a veritable architectural mecca. Local architecture firms such as Herzog & de Meuron and Diener & Diener have thrilled the world with their spectacular designs and play an active role in developing their home city’s built environment. But iconic structures have also been contributed by foreign architects such as Richard Meier and Frank Gehry. Indeed, the Basel conurbation now boasts buildings by 12 winners of the coveted Pritzker Prize. This brochure sets out to introduce you to the most exciting works. We wish you much enjoyment on your voyage of discovery!

The former Warteck Brewery is a venue for cultural projects.

An eye-catcher in the heart of the Old Town: the Museum der Kulturen.

1

Tradition and modernity This trail offers an intriguing combination of historic urban fabric and modern architecture. It starts at the Museum der Kulturen in the centre of Basel, runs through the city’s historic core and urban green spaces, and finishes at the University Hospital campus. On the way, you will witness impressive examples of contemporary architecture that have been seamlessly integrated into the everyday urban environment. Nowhere are the tensions between past and future as vibrant as they are here.

Living and working in Grossbasel This trail features a bewildering concentration of memorable buildings. You will pass a rich diversity of office buildings designed by masters of contemporary architecture such as Mario Botta, Herzog & de Meuron and Richard Meier. The trail begins at the PAX building at Aeschenplatz square and ends at the Swiss Railway Station SBB. Be inspired by the wealth of architectural styles that blend harmoniously with each other. As this route is relatively long, please note the optional short-cut described in the tips.

Fine architecture for fine art: the Museum Tinguely by Mario Botta.

35

Big buildings in Kleinbasel This trail will provide you with useful information about the development of Kleinbasel. Starting from the Museum Tinguely, the route will take you past some fine industrial buildings as well as Basel’s remodelled trade fair complex, which impresses by its scale and lends the whole district a new identity. The high density of spectacular buildings provides fascinating insights into the world of contemporary architecture.

World-class architecture in Basel and the region The abundance of magnificent buildings in the city of Basel and surrounding areas made it impossible to pack them all into the three trails. But to do full justice to the region’s architecture, we should draw your attention to some of the other highlights. Please note that the following list is not intended as a trail in its own right due to the sometimes considerable distances between the buildings. Simply pick your personal favourite for a separate visit or add buildings as appropriate to one of the three main trails.

Tip

In addition to the buildings by Frank Gehry and Zaha Hadid, the Vitra Campus also features works by Tadao Ando, Álvaro Siza, Nicholas Grimshaw and SANAA. However, the most offbeat contribution comes from Herzog & de Meuron, with its stacked longhouses.

Tip Celebrated architects such as

Diener & Diener, SANAA and Frank Gehry have designed distinctive buildings for the Novartis Campus. Compositions by Christ & Gantenbein, Buchner Bründler and Buol & Zünd, among others, also grace the neighbouring district.

The Vitra Campus boasts Frank Gehry‘s first building in Europe.

Note The Novartis Campus is not open to the public. Some buildings are nonetheless visible from the outside and Basel Tourism offers regular guided tours.

Tip Dreispitz is evolving from an

area dominated by industrial and warehouse buildings to an urban quarter with apartments and educational facilities. Fascinating projects crafted by architects such as Morger + Dettli and Herzog & de Meuron will give the neighbourhood a completely new look.

The Californian architect has since made his mark on the Novartis Campus.
