Facts & figures. Basel is a unique and delightful city, where proverbial Swiss quality meets a multicultural population in the border area with France and Germany. This makes the city unmistakably cosmopolitan, lively and innovative. Perhaps this is the reason why people of Basel know their guests’ needs so well by now and as a result are a dab hand at pampering them.
Population of the canton of Basel Approx. 195,000 Language
German Currency Swiss francs, CHF Exchange rate: EUR 1,00 = approx. CHF 1.25 / GBP 1.00 = approx. CHF 1.50 / USD 1.00 = approx. CHF 1 Climate Basel has a central European continental climate and is one of the warmest regions in Switzerland. It enjoys an above-average number of sunny days. The average temperatures of the last 30 years are: spring, 10.3 °C; summer, 18.8 °C; autumn, 10.5 °C; winter, 2.4 °C. Geography The city of culture on the Rhine is situated at the heart of Europe in the middle of the tri-border region formed by Switzerland, France and Germany. The Black Forest, the Vosges mountains, the Jura mountains and the Alsace are very close to Basel.
Economy In Basel you will find a unique concentration of innovative companies, research institutes and academic institutions, a cosmopolitan culture, an international environment and businessfriendly conditions. The region gives employment to around 300,000 people from both Switzerland and abroad. The city on the Rhine is a centre for life sciences as well as the chemical and pharmaceutical industries. It is also home to many important companies in the logistics, transport and financial services industries. Furthermore, Basel is one of the most important trade fair and congress centres in Switzerland. History Back before our calendar began, Basel had already been occupied by the Celts. In 30 B.C. the city‘s strategically favourable position led the Romans to station their military forces on the hill now occupied by the Cathedral. One key event in the development of the city was the founding of the university in the year 1460. Many of Europe‘s greatest minds came to Basel, which became a veritable centre of humanism and book printing. The Reformation witnessed the growth of the silk weaving and dyeing industries which in turn gave rise to today‘s pharmaceutical and chemical companies. The once fortified settlement is today a financial and commercial hub and a celebrated city of culture.

Sights to see & places to go
Sights to see & places to go. The Cathedral 1 Together with the Mittlere Brücke, the Cathedral is the most famous landmark of Basel. With its red sandstone walls, colourful roof tiles and twin towers, no other building adorns the cityscape of Basel like the Cathedral. Excellent views over the city can be enjoyed from the Cathedral‘s towers.
Basel exhibition centre 4 The city’s most recent landmark is the new exhibition centre. The central architectural urban feature of the new hall complex, developed by Herzog & de Meuron, is the City Lounge. This covered, public space not only marks the entrance to the exhibitions, but also functions as a meeting place for locals and visitors.
Pfalz 2 The terrace high above the Rhine behind the Cathedral provides a stunning view across the Old Town, far into the tri-border area and as far as the Vosges mountains.
Spalentor The Spalentor is the most impressive of the remaining three city gates from the city’s large fortifications of 1400 and is regarded as one of the most beautiful city gates in Switzerland.
City Hall The Marktplatz is dominated by the magnificent City Hall, the seat of Basel’s government. The council rooms, the atmospheric courtyard, the romantic arcades and the impressive tower are particularly worth visiting.
St. Alban-Tal St. Alban-Tal is a district of the city full of romance and historic buildings. Located between the Rhine and the city centre, it is characterised by its narrow alleys and streams and is also known as the Little Venice of Basel.
Marktplatz Six days a week, fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers are sold at the Marktplatz. Set against the backdrop of the historic Old Town, this market is a colourful event where delicious food of all types can be sampled.
St. Jakob-Park stadium The architects Herzog & de Meuron are well known all over the world. Their most important projects include the Tate Modern in London and the Olympic Stadium in Beijing. The architect duo also created Switzerland’s first multifunctional football stadium: the St. Jakob-Park in Basel.
Mittlere Brücke The Mittlere Brücke is one of the oldest crossing points on the Rhine between Lake Constance and the North Sea. Located at the centre of the bridge is the Käppelijoch, where executions were carried out during the Middle Ages. Border Triangle The tri-border region at the Rhine harbour marks the meeting point between Switzerland, Germany and France. This is also the area where ships depart for the North Sea and is therefore an important hub for the supply of raw materials to Switzerland. Old Town The Old Town of Basel is one of the best-preserved and most beautiful in Europe. In hardly any other city do buildings from the 15th century and those by modern, internationally renowned architects complement each other to form an urban landscape that is both intriguing and harmonious. Hammering Man The Hammering Man, a symbol of the hard-working residents of Basel, is located on Aeschenplatz. The 13.5 metre high artwork by American artist Jonathan Borofsky has been swinging its hammer here continuously since 1989. Tinguely Fountain 3 The famous fountain by Jean Tinguely is situated on the former location of the stage of the old city theatre. With his playful machine sculptures, the Swiss artist created a landmark in the city.
Rhine promenade Basel’s lifeline is the best place to relax. The Rhine promenade is the most popular jogging route in the city and is also the first choice for people out for a stroll or for those in love. The four Rhine ferries Cross the Rhine the way people did 150 years ago: ring the bell at the quay, give the ferryman a sign, and get on the ferries powered only by the natural current of the Rhine. Messeturm by Morger & Degelo At 105 metres, the Messeturm is the tallest building in Basel. Enjoy the sunset from the Bar Rouge on the 31st floor, the highest bar in the city. BIS building by Mario Botta This impressive building designed by famous architect Mario Botta is home to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS). The sixstorey building is typical of the style of the architect from the Swiss canton of Ticino. Südpark Südpark provides retail, residential and office accommodation under one roof. The building on the south side of Swiss Railway Station SBB belongs to SBB. This project, designed by architects Herzog & de Meuron, is expected to contribute to the on-going redevelopment of the Gundeldinger area.

Exhibition highlights
Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel
Exhibition highlights. Spielzeug Welten Museum Basel 1 Private Marilyn – the person behind the concept of Monroe, 19 Oct 2013 – 6 April 2014 In this unique special exhibition, more than 700 original memorabilia and personal items of the extraordinary icon Marilyn Monroe will be displayed in Switzerland for the first time. The exhibition takes a look behind the facade of the glamorous Hollywood film star Marilyn Monroe, who – despite her death some decades ago – still captivates our attention.
Museum Tinguely Kristof Kintera, 11 Jun – 29 Sep 2014 With irony and mischief the young Czech artist Kristof Kintera turns art and life on their heads. With his dysfunctional machines with absurd add-ons, he has Tinguely‘s aesthetic to a “T”. With him he shares an extremely extroverted and critical artistic attitude that questions, pulls apart or reconfigures everything. This solo exhibition, his biggest so far, will present all facets of his versatile creativity.
Kunstmuseum Basel James Ensor, 16 Feb – 25 May 2014 Ghosts, skulls, skeletons and other macabre figures characterise the work of James Ensor. His works are bizarre, ironic, sometimes aggressive and provocative, and always driven by a profound sense of humour. This exhibition features almost 60 paintings and just as many drawings, some of which are being exhibited for the first time.
Fondation Beyeler Gustave Courbet, 7 Sep 2014 – 18 Jan 2015 Gustave Courbet is one of the greatest painters of the 19th century. With his provocative paintings and the emphasis he places on his individuality as an artist, his work heralds Modernism. The Fondation Beyeler is devoting an exhibition to this first avantgarde artist that will bring together his self-portraits, his representations of women and his paintings of grottos, the sea, as well as highlighting his strategy of ambiguity and the innovative way in which he treats colour.
Schaulager Paul Chan, 12 Apr – 19 Oct 2014 Schaulager presents the first major solo exhibition of the US artist Paul Chan. He is one of the most versatile and unpredictable artists of his generation and certainly one of the most original voices in contemporary art today. The artist‘s scope ranges from sculpture, drawings and installation to light projections, animations, invented fonts and site-specific interventions. Fondation Beyeler Gerhard Richter, 18 May – 7 Sep 2014 Fondation Beyeler is staging the first major Swiss exhibition of probably the most significant painter of modern times. It unites for the first time works conceived by Gerhard Richter as series, cycles and rooms during his various creative periods. These include abstract and figurative works, including portraits and landscapes.
Vitra Design Museum Alvar Aalto, 27 Sep 2014 – Mar 2015 The architect and designer Alvar Aalto is known as one of the leading protagonists of a “different” modernism. The exhibition presents a selection of his most important buildings, as well as furniture, lights and other objects.

Basel region. The three-country region of the Upper Rhine Valley is located in the centre of Europe, along the upper part of the river Rhine, and is a region of appealing differences. Be indulged by famous gastronomy and the excellent regional wines, relax in a spa in various luxury hotels or get to know one of the well-known cities like Freiburg or Strasbourg. The Upper Rhine Valley is easily accessible and also easy to travel by car as well as by public transport. The Schengen visa regulations make travelling from one country to the other simple and pleasant. Colmar The beautiful Old Town of Colmar with its famous quarter known as Little Venice is an appealing place to spend some time. Enjoy specialities from the Alsace in one of the many typical regional restaurants or discover the renowned Isenheim Altarpiece at the Unterlinden Museum, a must for all fans of culture. Strasbourg There is no doubt that Strasbourg is one of Europe’s great cities that you simply have to know and love. Every part of this city has its own identity closely linked to its history and inhabitants. The Old Town is located on an island in the river Ill and has been classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Castles – Haut-Koenigsbourg Alsace is Europe’s richest region in terms of concentration of feudal castles. Indeed, the region has over 400 castle ruins. The HautKoenigsbourg was completely refurbished and is one of the most frequently visited in France. Black Forest The Black Forest area with its dense forests, bright mountain tops, mysterious glacial lakes and romantic valleys is a popular holiday destination for Europeans. Tradition is highly appreciated in the Black Forest. The region is also known for its cuckoo clocks and the Black Forest cherry cake.

Their origin dates back to the 19th century when they opened their doors to ramblers to offer them home made products. Southern Palatinate This charming wine region comprises numerous romantic villages along the famous German wine route. Endless panoramic circular routes, untouched groves of woods and lush green meadows are a treat for hikers, bikers and those wanting to replenish spent energies and seeking tranquillity. Basel country side 1 Basel country side, located at the gates of Basel, offers unspoilt nature, magnificent landscapes and limitless recreational possibilities – all easily accessible both by public transport and car. From the Rhine to the Jura mountains, visitors to the region will find many unknown and exciting areas, which one simply must discover for oneself.
