The Sensation of Antikythera In autumn 1900, sponge divers stumbled across a wreck dating from the 1st century BC on the seabed near the Greek island of Antikythera.The wreck yielded some of the greatest ancient Greek treasure that had ever been found. But the most famous find was a mysterious bronze object: The Antikythera Mechanism. –6–

8/FONDATION BEYELER The museum, which was built by architect Renzo Piano, is idyllically situated in the grounds of Berower Park. Three major new exhibitions will be shown in 2015 including masterpieces by Paul Gauguin. The legendary Beyeler Collection consists of over 300 works ranging from Classical Modernism to contemporary art, including works by Monet, Picasso, Matisse Cézanne, Giacometti, Bacon. > 18.01.2015 Gustave Courbet The rebellious artist was a key figure in the history of art and a pioneer of modern art.

This retrospective of the work of the Amsterdam-based artist, the most comprehensive to date in Europe, offers a unique insight into her remarkable work from the mid-1970s to this day.

08.02. – 28.06.2015 Paul Gauguin The Fondation Beyeler presents one of the most famous and fascinating artists of all time: Paul Gauguin (1848–1903). As one of the major European cultural highlights of 2015, the exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler brings together a large number of Gauguin’s masterpieces from leading international museums and private collections. Gauguin’s trendsetting pictures went on to become icons of modern art, and are regarded as some of the most important cultural treasures in the world. With their bright colours and basic shapes, they revolutionized art and are still thought of as inspirational, even today.

16/KUNSTHALLE BASEL The Kunsthalle Basel, which opened in 1872, is among the leading institutions of international contemporary art. It has promoted the avant-garde for over a century and can therefore look back on a long tradition of pushing back the accepted boundaries of contemporary art.

06.03.–31.05.2015 Mark Leckey. UniAddDumThs A new installation by Mark Leckey (*1964, GB) consisting of replicas and 3D copies from the Pantheon of rare artefacts that retrace the Internet research carried out by the artist. It illustrates the importance of the desire for objects in Leckey’s artistic practice.

> 30.04.2015 Nevin Aladag. Marsch Installation on the rear wall of the Kunsthalle Basel. 30.01. – 15.02.2015 Zhana Ivanova. Ongoing Retrospective (Part1) First institutional solo exhibition of Zhana Ivanova (*1977). Inspired by her performances, which reveal society’s unwritten rules, this unusual project reconceives the rules of a “retrospective”: it will appear in reverse, in chapters spread over the years to come. 13.02. – 24.05.2015 Vincent Meessen /Thela Tendu. Patterns for (Re)cognition An exhibition featuring rare, abstract works from the 1930s by the Congolese artist Thela Tendu, curated by the artist Vincent Meessen (*1971, BE). Elaborated, staged and designed as a work of art, the exhibition actually forms part of Meessen’s own artistic work.

The Kunsthaus is among the leading exhibition spaces for regional, national and international contemporary art in the Basel region. Visualisation of the extention

The Kunstmuseum Basel is home to one of the oldest and most significant public art collections in the world. In February 2015, the main building will be closing for renovation work. At the same time, work will be carried out to connect it to the new extension that is in the process of being built. This extension will celebrate its grand opening at the same time as the re-opening of the main building in April 2016. Counting with the Museum für Gegenwartskunst, the Basel art audience will then have access to three museums.

The Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía and the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid are also exhibiting extensive holdings from the Kunstmuseum Basel.
