Summer 2014 Flowers for the Pharaoh The centrepiece of this exhibition, which represents a mixture of botany and archaeology, is a sensational discovery made in Zurich: the remains of Egyptian flowers from royal tombs, dating back thousands of years. The museum, which was built by architect Renzo Piano, is idyllically situated in the grounds of Berower Park. Four major exhibitions will be shown in 2014 in addition to the legendary collection by Ernst and Hildy Beyeler. The latter consists of around 250 masterpieces ranging from Classical Modernism to contemporary art, including works by Monet, Cézanne and Van Gogh, not forgetting Picasso, Matisse, Klee, Giacometti, Warhol and Bacon, presented alongside objects of ethnographic art from Africa, Alaska and Oceania. >12.01.2014 Alexander Calder. 02.02.–18.05.2014 Odilon Redon Odilon Redon’s (1840–1916) work is characterized by contrasts, evolving from the palette of blacks of his early work to the explosive colourfulness of his later pastels and oil paintings. Bizarre monsters appear alongside heavenly creatures – nature and imagination intermingle in the work of this protagonist of symbolism.
18.05.–07.09.2014 Gerhard Richter Switzerland’s biggest exhibition to date of work by the artist who is probably the most influential contemporary painter (*1932). For the first time, works designed as series, cycles and rooms from all his creative periods have been grouped together: portraits, landscapes, abstracts, small and monumental pictures. 07.09.2014–18.01.2015 Gustave Courbet As a key figure in the history of art, Gustave Courbet (1819–1877) was a pioneer of modern art, a subtle provocateur known for his innovative use of colour. His highly contested painting, The Origin of the World, forms the centrepiece of the exhibition. 23.11.2014–22.03.2015 Peter Doig Peter Doig (*1959) is exhibiting large-size paintings and producing a wall painting especially for the museum. Doig works with fragments of our civilization using a kind of “sampling” procedure to create ethereal pictures full of colour, melancholy and secrecy.

Ernst Beyeler recollects: “I often used to visit Picasso. One day, he took me by the arm, opened the door to a room and said: ‘Choose something!’ I felt as if I was in Ali Baba’s cave: there were more than eight hundred paintings.”
Switzerland’s first museum café in the Museum der Kulturen Basel, the Yamsknolle, opened in 1960. This was only made possible through the voluntary work of 160 Basel women.
Director Billy Wilder asked Charles Eames to design him a narrow couch. He used to lie on it with his arms crossed. As he started to relax, his arms would fall to his sides and wake him up. The Soft Pad Chaise was designed in 1968. Billy Wilder donated it to the Vitra Design Museum in 1996.
The Dinkelberger Madonna from 1500 is one of the treasures of the Dreiländermuseum. The sculpture was discovered in a smokehouse in the midst of bacon and sausages. After years spent lying there, it had turned quite black.
Following a referendum campaign with the slogan “All you need is Pablo” in 1967, 54 per cent of voters said yes to a public-sector loan of 6 million francs to purchase two of Picasso’s major works for the Kunstmuseum Basel. Picasso was so touched by this democratic declaration of admiration that he offered the city another four paintings.

22.10.2014–11.01.2015 Poetry of the metropolis. The Affichistes One of the most radical and yet poetic approximations of reality was practised in around 1960 by the “Affichistes”: François Dufrêne, Raymond Hains and Jacques Villeglé, Mimmo Rotella and Wolf Vostell. The exhibition presents the inventions of these five artists, be these décollages, filmic, photographic, or also poetic experiments.
