BASEL – Switzerland’s capital of art and culture. Basel, the venerable old city on the bend in the Rhine, is rich in unique places of interest. With the highest density of museums in Europe – some 40 museums in all – four world-famous museums in particular stand out and need fear no comparison internationally. But Basel is also always well worth a visit for its superbly preserved, idyllic old town, its outstanding examples of modern architecture by such names as Frank Gehry, Mario Botta and Herzog & de Meuron, its cosmopolitan flair and international feel as the border city to Germany and France. Basel is the Swiss culture capital and a world apart. No tour of Switzerland is complete without it. For more information: www.basel.com, artanddesign@basel.com or +41 (0)61 268 68 68.

EXPERIENCE ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN. The Vitra Design Museum ranks among the world’s most important museums of design and architecture. The expressively shaped museum building was designed by Frank Gehry. Regularly changing exhibitions provide insights into the diversity and significance of design, while also incorporating related fields such as architecture and art. The museum’s collection concentrates on industrially manufactured objects such as furniture and lighting from 1850 to the present day. At the Vitra Campus, the exhibitions are complemented by a varying programme of events, tours and workshops. The touring exhibitions are shown in museums throughout the world. www.design-museum.de The Bauhaus #itsalldesign 26.09.2015 – 28.02.2016 Objection! – Protest by Design 26.02.2016 – 29.05.2016 Alexander Girard. MODERN AND CONTEMPORARY MASTERPIECES. From Monet, Cézanne, Van Gogh by way of Picasso, Matisse, Klee, Giacometti to Warhol and Bacon as well as ethnographic art from Africa, Alaska and Oceania: with some 300 masterpieces from the 20th and 21st centuries, the Beyeler Collection’s main focus is on Classic Modernism. Inaugurated in 1997 and set in an idyllic park, the museum was designed by the worldrenowned architect Renzo Piano. The Fondation Beyeler, the most-visited art museum in Switzerland, owes its special appeal to its harmonious combination of exceptional art, picturesque nature and fascinating architecture. Every year, it shows up to four temporary exhibitions including projects in public spaces and just as many new presentations of the permanent collection. EXPERIENCING ART. This museum is different: Liveliness, laughter, astonishment, discovery at a location that sets the senses in motion and where art comes to the beholder. A museum that awakens pleasure in experiencing art, playfulness and contemplation in children and adults alike. Museum Tinguely, built directly on the Rhine by the Ticino-based architect Mario Botta, is home to the biggest collection of works by Jean Tinguely (1925 – 1991), one of the most innovative and most important Swiss artists of the 20th century. The permanent exhibition shows a comprehensive overview of his creativity that spans four decades. Special exhibitions regularly take place which, departing from Tinguely’s works, present a broad spectrum of artists and themes of the 20th and 21st century: In this context, forerunners such as Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters, contemporaries such as Arman, Niki de Saint Phalle, Yves Klein are presented just the same as current trends. Museum Tinguely was opened in 1996 on the Kleinbasel (little Basel) side of the city and is surrounded by the Solitudepark. The museum is a cultural commitment of the company Roche. www.tinguely.ch Ben Vautier. Is everything art? 21.10.2015 – 22.01.2016 Maria Netter.
