EDITOR'S LETTER I guess I can say that my generation grew up on George Michael and Celine Dion cassette tapes, celebrity cutout scrap books, question based personal journals passed around for friends to fill in, Russian books by Tolstoy and Dostoyevsky read on rooftops in the summer, platform shoes and denim overalls. However, I cannot say that the generation of snapchatters, hashtaggers, Pokemon hunters and self proclaimed influencers is not MINE.
I do admit to, though, scrolling through Facebook and Instagram before my morning coffee to post an occasional selfie from some pompous Beverly Hills after party using my favorite Valencia filter. In the afternoon I get a few snaps from my parents who live across the globe – it is the after work time there. They go and catch up on a comedy play at the Riga National theater or enjoy their weekends by grilling that island-style dorado with some fancy white wine at the summer cottage house. They share their life moments with me through social media and I am sure they also do not feel like the cyber life is something that did not touch on their generation either. Most people, including an 86-year old grandma and a 6-year-old kid, have the skills to create and upload content online. Modern web accessibility allows the talents of all generations to be exposed to our saturated ears and eyes, but BASIC has scouted that special talent that will move you and inspire.

The fall edition of the BASIC Generation Issue opens up the doors to the insights of some of the most amusing artists, singers, designers, actors and photographers from all over the globe. Like 10-year old Norwegian song bird, Angelina Jordan, who I found from my mom. Talking to BASIC, Angelina unveils her secret reason why she is always singing barefoot on stage. Find her on YouTube and you will get severe goose bumps from her deeply touching, and everything but childish, voice. My first introduction to the Harlems happened through tedious scouting on Instagram. No wonder they became an instant Internet sensation. While some kids cannot wait to get away from their parental love in the company of their peers, Benny and Jaxyn (father and daughter) are showing off their glamorous teamwork. We want to make a statement that at BASIC we are all about promoting true role models and inspirational talent, thus, the Harle's are on the cover of this issue. And lastly, as a female publisher, I would always give an extra nudge of support to female leadership. We chose the most bad-ass runway looks from
Fall Fashion 2016 collections throughout the fashion capitals of the world and compiled a visual list of the Top Careers in Fashion, alongside a Special Spy Report from the streets of Paris, Milan, London and New York. I encourage women of all ages, races and shapes to continuously upraise their career goals and ambitions. JEAN GRITSFELDT Ukraine's elite fashion designer, Jean Gritsfeldt, has done it again. Circus of Life, Gritsfeldt's FW 2016/17 collection debuted at the National Circus of Ukraine during Ukrainian Fashion Week, pushing boundaries that speak to the chilling storms and the winter sky that inspired the collection. The fall line presented an array of
embroidered outerwear, including knitted sweatshirts, leather trench coats, sequined jackets and blazers. The pieces were influential as Gritsfeldt once again displayed haute couture with his unique texture combinations. 19

DUNYAH Sleek, black and futuristic design captivates the world of men’s fashion in Mustafa Wafa’s latest line for DUNYAH. The edgy, readyto-wear brand designer created the line from a vision that had come to him in 2003, when he was broke, homeless and down on his luck. “In order to even survive during those times I would travel back and forth from Washington DC to New York with two of my surrogate brothers and bring back articles of clothing to hustle.” Wafa stated. 20

Fast forward to 2016 and the successful designer presents us with a new collection he calls “a mixture of street and high end wear.” DUNYAH gives the city man a wearable line which incorporates high-end, handpicked fabrics and threads that tie in the garment look of classic and modern aesthetics. Someone that’s cool, sleek and classy with a little bit of edge. An individual who is not afraid to make a statement or be just be himself.

NICHOLAS K If Rey from Star Wars needed a designer, one would call upon brother and sister duo Nicholas and Christopher Kunz behind the inspirational Nicholas K. Their Fall 2016 Runway Show had us dreaming of being an effortless urban nomad draped in layers of silk, slinky sashes and leather bandanas fastened around our heads. Inspired by the futuristic, self-sufficient desert community Arcosanti,

Nicholas K stuck with neutral colors of camel, cream, black and merlot. Rousing looks cruising the catwalk included a dark, date colored crushed velvet dress with a low cut V that was slit up-to-there, a monochromatic steel colored outfit of slouchy drop crotch pants, a layered trench coat and thick leather waist belts. If this is the future, we can’t wait.

Meet Lithuanian based fashion illustrator and painter Akvile Lesauskaite. This talented fashion artist has been gaining quite the following on social media and in the world of fashion lately for her unique lipstick based artwork. What sets Lesauskaite apart from the rest is her hand painted one-of-a-kind contemporary fashion illustrations using tubes of lipsticks and lip

pencils. The artist began her creative journey when she attended the Vilnius Academy of Arts and Erasmus studies Academia Di Belle Arti Di Brera in Milan, Italy. Upon graduation, she began showcasing her personal art exhibitions at events all over Vilnius, Lithuania and Milan. Her contemporary artwork and portraits depict lifestyle portraits and stylish imagery of today's fashion industry. Inspired by today's “It” girl and top fashion designers such as Aquazzura, Valentino, and Alexander Wang, it is a trend you can see in her popular portraits, such as her famed “Shoe Studying”. Working in international fashion she gets to attend top fashion weeks which fuel her inspiration for her art pieces. Some of her most popular portraits include Lanvin landscapes, Paris Girl, Southern Ruffles and Shoe Studying. To look at her work, it is hard to believe her stunning creations are created by using lipstick. She uses various lipstick tones from corals and reds, to deep burgundies and fills it in with watercolors and markers. Lesauskaite discovered the genius idea of using lipstick in her work after experimenting with different paints, as she realized lipsticks would not fade, show intense color and dry well. Lipsticks have since become the basis for her paintings. Her future goals include wanting to create larger canvases and limited edition prints. We are eagerly awaiting to see how she uses this unique and artistic medium next.

PARIS Straying from his feminine trademark, Saab added a flare of fierceness to his collection from Paris fashion week. Flowy silhouettes embellished with dark lace and intricate embroidery strutted down the catwalk. By mid-show black magic took over the clothes as black and crimson lace, cascading fringe, Victorian blouses and dresses flowing like waterfalls bewitched the runway. Long, sexy fringe hugged the curves of many of the models and a black fur coat even enchanted us. What stole our hearts was an opulent red dress with long, layered sleeves, red leather belt and black studded choker necklace. This show left us mesmerized.

LONDON It’s a man’s man’s man’s world…but it wouldn’t mean nothin’ without Gareth Pugh’s statement on the modernized woman this past Paris Fashion week. Stealing from the working mans closet, Pugh’s line takes an almost 80’s take on the cinched suit jackets, belted coats, capes and perfectly tailored looks showing a woman can be powerful and make a head or two turn in the mean time. His new spin on the power suit revealed our favorite look in a camel trench with matching corn dolly hat adorned with white stars. The most outlandish part of the show was when the models wore Hannibal Lecter-esque masks that Pugh said reflects the “visual codes of raw female ambition.” Apparently, we are man-eaters…watch out world!

MILAN Take a trip into Italian art and renaissance themes with Alessandro Michele’s new creative direction for Gucci’s line at Milan fashion week. 60s style mini dresses drenched in abstract graphics and mixed textures walked the runway. Platform sandals with aquamarine and canary yellow tights made a splash. Highlighting streamlined silhouettes Michele revived the baroque style with exaggerated pieces reminiscent of French couture. A long, vibrant red fur coat draped over the shoulders of a menswear inspired suit and caught our eye. The quirky look was finished with silver rimmed glasses and black hat…have you seen Carmen San Diego?

MILAN Put on your sailor hat, fasten your sky-high laced up boots and grab your large cross-body handbag…it’s time to travel and roar to the world “I am woman!” Miuccia Prada wanted you to know that everything in her line is symbolic. From the trinkets worn as accessories to cinched white corsets to golden anchors decorating shoes, every intricate layer of her unique line screamed a woman who has traveled and experienced life. The line covered all four seasons and if we read into the symbolism Prada asks us to we see a woman whose clothes have shaped her identity throughout time. Prada stated backstage at her show that her clothes are “like a collage of what is happy or painful, of whether you are feeling beautiful or horrible, when you have love or no love. I thought of it as like someone who has all the clothes she’s ever had on the floor in front of her in the morning and she must choose how she’s going to assemble herself.” Standout looks included a deep navy velvet textured dress with golden embroidery, pirate-like light brown leather lace up boots and like any worldly Prada woman, a white sailor hat. The message is clear: wear who you are and don’t apologize.

NEW YORK With the athleisure trend on the rise, Rihanna’s new line as creative director for Puma is one to keep your eye on. Inspired by Japanese street culture with gothic undertones these clothes will make you feel edgy and confident. With an emphasis on sporty silhouettes and fabrics such a jersey and velvet - you can be comfortable and utterly sexy simultaneously. The simplicity of the colors – staying with black, grey, and white – and minimalistic makeup only highlighted the “glamorous goth” shoes of this line. Our favorite look was a laceup thigh-high sneaker boot, black poncho and puma choker reminiscent of a 90s punk rocker. Lastly, did we mention the gothic jungle full of trees and the metallic catwalk that Rihanna created for her models to walk? Game changer.

NEW YORK Ralph Lauren “dares you to be yourself,” with his new ready to wear fall/winter collection from New York fashion week. Inspired by the sophisticated yet effortless woman, his line opens with super soft beige tones luxuriously mixed into fabrics of cashmere, flannel and plaids. Seemingly inspired by British style its no wonder Sienna Miller was front and center at the star-studded event. Where his line truly popped was the shift into cool rocker territory. Every look felt like watching a mysterious celeb from the seventies in London. Royal blue, pleated velvets, frock coats and little black dresses swept the runway. But we can’t get our minds off the golden finale that screamed modern romanticism. A black long sleeved crop top, matching black belt and boots seem something from today’s magazines, but when you add a long luxurious skirt glimmering in gold you’re far from average. We are sure the red carpet will be overflowing with these looks.

NEW YORK Did we fall down the rabbit hole or get sucked into a black hole that landed us in a world of dark magic and fashion noir? Possibly, or it’s the inventive direction of Marc Jacob’s new line from New York fashion week. Amongst a stark white backdrop, models walked in tweeds, leather skirts, deconstructed varsity sweaters and silks all touched with a bit of fur. The makeup was gothic emphasizing black lips and smoky baby doll eyes that had us dreaming of a world where a Clockwork Orange intertwined with the Queen of Hearts. While dark, this world still preserved its sweetness amongst the flowing, full skirts and silk dresses. Kendall Jenner’s look stole the show in a gloomy tweed skirt and coat lined with raven feathers. The show finished with Lady Gaga walking…need we say more? Sign us up for this haunted world.

This incredibly talented, good-natured Louisiana native lives every day of his life with cerebral palsy. By his own words, he looks upon the diagnosis as just a challenge, one that has never deterred him from doing what he loves best, performing and helping others to lead positive, outstanding lives in spite of anything they might be up against. RJ tours colleges and does public speaking engagements where he talks openly about the challenges he faced growing up. He uses much of his time in the spotlight to encourage people to be brave and face their fears. His courage and candor about his illness have long been an inspiration to many never detracting from the artist that he is.
Who’s Driving Doug is your first starring role on the big screen, fill us in on the film… It was an amazing opportunity shooting that film. It was very different being the lead in this project and I definitely had a lot of fun doing it. There’s more responsibility and weight in doing a film project but I think it worked out well for what it is. We all cared about the film and what we were
doing. Our cast and crew were a lot of fun. That’s all you can hope for when you’re working on a role. Doug is an interesting character too; he’s a smart, outgoing kid who is trapped in his shell. As the movie plays out he starts to come out of that shell and learn who he is and what he can do. Big screen or little screen, where are you most comfortable? Anywhere that I can fit; I just enjoy working. Working with a good crew and a good cast of people who care about the project is where I feel most comfortable. Can you tell us more about how you got involved with the 2016 Paralympics? I was doing some work in London at the time and I met a few people, including Channel 4 and Scope, and from there the relationship just continued to grow which allowed me this amazing opportunity. I’m really excited to be able to do this, it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity that Channel 4 has given me. I can’t wait to see how Rio goes and to see the amazing strength of each athlete competing for the gold! And lastly, who is your favorite go-to fashion designer for events? I like Moods of Norway; they make colorful and comfortable suits. I also love wearing Vivienne Westwood. Honestly any designer that makes comfortable clothes that fit my lifestyle is my go-to.

As effortless as it may seem, deciding on which art pieces to post is really an exacting process. I am lucky enough to be flooded with beautiful images, from personal submissions, galleries and what I find on Instagram. Yet, I really need to connect to each thing I post, and that can take many hours, be it a hidden message or a butterfly - it's really about what moves me in that moment. How they turn out to be symbiotic with my personal style posts is really an intrinsic figure of my emotion.

Where do you get the inspiration for your pieces? I love looking at fashion editorials and ad campaigns for inspiration, especially vintage ones and particularly from the 90s at the moment. I always tend to reference pop culture and things that are "now", but merge it with things of the past. For example, updating the Disney Princesses with a modernized look, yet still staying true to the essence of the characters and their color schemes. If you can achieve that perfect balance of nostalgia and modernity, you have a winning formula. 122

INTERVIEW when I performed there. The love I get from people all around the world is an incredible feeling and to be able to help and provide for people in need through my music is wonderful. Your talent is truly exceptional and seems to come with such an ease when you perform. In a few words, how do you feel when you’re performing? I feel at home when I'm on stage and the feeling or "energy" I get on stage is an amazing feeling.
You’ve been into classic artists for
most of your young life. Was there anyone who influenced you to listen to artists like Billy Holiday and the jazz genre or did you discover the greats through YouTube? I started with listening to Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" every time I went to YouTube and then I started watching the “Related Videos”. Through that I got introduced to Jazz artists such as Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and I fell in love with their songs. My grandmother, who is also an artist, has also been a big inspiration. Having accomplished so much at such a young age, what has been your favorite moment so far? There have been many amazing moments so far. I'm glad I have raised over 16 Million Euros in Germany for children in need who struggle with health problems. It was also very fun to meet PSY in South Korea
What one piece of advice would you give to other young, talented individuals who dream of performing? Do what you really love to do and don't let anybody else decide something for you that you may not feel right about. Spend more time with people that give you good and positive energy. The other stuff will fall in place if you are dedicated to your art. Now an author, your book that was released in Norway explains why you perform barefoot, can you share with us the special meaning behind this? Yes! I was 6 years old when I was in Asia with my mother. On a street corner I saw a little girl who weighed people on a bathroom scale for a small fee, whatever change people had to give. I was shocked that the little girl didn't have any shoes on and she looked very sad. I approached the girl and talked to her and she spoke of her dreams to become a doctor someday but since her parents passed away she doubted that she would ever be able to go to school. I was very sad to hear this, so I took off my shoes and gave them to her and told her that she must not lose hope and to pursue her dream. So, to honor her, I sing barefoot every time I'm on stage. 131

hat is one thing that people would be surprised to know about you? I think people would be surprised to know that I love country music. What inspired your passion for music and who has been there supporting you from the beginning? Michael Jackson, Donny Hathaway, Ray Charles, R Kelly, Brian McKnight, Boys II Men, Bojangles and Gregory Hines inspired my passion for music and entertaining. My Mom has supported me from the beginning and my family. My Mom left her career to support my dreams. Where do you see yourself five years from now? Hopefully I'll still be doing what I'm doing now and more. I would also love to do some directing and producing.
Share with us your proudest moment in your career so far. One of the proudest moments was back when I was on my “In My Feelings� tour and the crowd sang back every word. Last but certainly not least, looking years into the future - what legacy do you want to leave behind? How would you want Trevor Jackson to be remembered? I just want to be remembered as a man who followed God, stayed true to himself and spent every day of his life helping inspire others to do the same.

INTERVIEW: You have become a strong example of a positive male role model and father figure. How did this drive to uplift those around you come about? Who was your inspiration in your youth, your hero? The more I believe in me the more I help others around me to believe in themselves. the more I learn the more I teach. Being that I didn't have many positive male role models that I knew personally growing up, I quickly had to find the father in me, I had to self-motivate myself and believe in me more than anyone else could. I had to let go of excuses and thoughts of why I couldn't become somebody and listen to the tiny voice in my mind of why I could. The older I grow, the bigger that voice becomes. Watching my mother battle and conquer breast cancer when she was only nineteen years old taught me so much about strength and perseverance when you are against all odds. She was given four months to live and had me, I was four at the time, to raise and look after. I remember every single day of her fight with cancer and in the end she won. My mother is a survivor and hero, not only a hero to me but to anyone who knows her. My grandmother tried to confront her former husband, a crack addict, about stolen rent money and was choked and had her neck almost broken by him. She had to go to work, where she educated HIV Aids victims, the next morning. She never complained - she put on the most beautiful white Anne Klein suit draped in pearls and got through

the day without anyone noticing anything from the awful night before. These strong women in my life are definitely my greatest heroes. My daughter teaches me to say yes to love a little more every single day, she's one of my hero's as well. Your daughter is lovely! What are your goals as a parent for her and in what ways do you aspire to help her on her journey to achieve success in life? I want my daughter to be comfortable in her own skin. Go through her journey with wisdom, knowledge and optimism. I only want to nourish her invisible wings as they continue to grow. One of the lessons she's learning is to never make excuses. Excuses do not equal success, make the greatest decisions you can no matter what circumstances are. You are bringing a beautiful message of peace to the world. Currently the U.S. is aching for more of the words you are speaking. We are in the throes of vast political divide and just recently, more hatred and racial tumult has flared up once again. What words do you offer on the state of the nation to inspire others? The only cure for fear, hurt, pain, hate and racism is the medicine of love. I'm sending comforting energy and light to any soul that may be grieving or experiencing heartache of any kind right now during these trying times. As long as you’re blinking it’s not over - as longer as you’re breathing you are safe. God loves you and so do I. As a beauty editor, I’m very excited to have you share some of your shampoo making secrets and formulas. I understand you make everything yourself. Are these items that anyone can make at home? I try not to put anything in my hair that I can't put into my body. Using homemade ingredients for my hair has helped me maintain it a great deal. I'm currently working on a project that will help people on their journey to growing healthy, lengthy, extraordinary hair as well.

Tell us about your upcoming plans and projects for the future, where is your creative vision taking you next? I'm excited about every project I'm working on! A book that I've been working on for a year is coming very soon, hair care products are on their way and I'm almost finished with a music project along with some other fun surprises that I think the public will really enjoy. I'm even more excited about the projects my daughter is working on, seeing her dreams come true in so many ways at such a young age is so fulfilling. Like I always tell her, the skies the limit when you are an unlimited artist, thinker, dreamer and believer.

With beauty standards changing almost every year. What is your understanding of true beauty? And what are your comments on women racing for the latest beauty tricks and technologies? I believe true beauty really comes from within. By being confident, knowing who you are and accepting it. Beauty comes in so many forms, by how kind someone is, or how passionate, or by one’s character and soul. Unfortunately, our society focuses much more on external beauty. Strong character and a good heart is much more powerful. We all spend so much energy and time on improving or changing our external appearance. As a woman and model myself, I always love to try new skincare products, l love to wear makeup and I like to wear nice clothes, but that doesn't define me. Personally, I don't think there's anything wrong with enjoying these things, I do believe a woman should take care of herself and age gracefully, as as long as she knows that it doesn't really define her true beauty. What are the most unusual beauty treatments or tricks you have tried or experienced? Growing up, and even still now, I have used velaterapia. A process in which you burn your hair to rid it of split ends. I have also had a facial with human placenta tissue, which makes your skin super soft. What are your top three beauty routines? Besides drinking a ton of water and sleeping at least 8 hours a day, I always make sure I wash my face and remove all make up. I also deep cleanse my skin before I go to bed, which is very important! I also like to apply different serums under my day cream and night cream. Tell us, who are your most inspiring beauty icons and why? Being in the modeling business most of my life, I have always been surrounded by beautiful & talented women. The ones that inspired me the most are the ones who appreciate their own inner beauty and never use their external beauty as a weapon or a method of control in order to get what they want. A particular model that always inspired me is Christie Brinkley, she is beautiful inside and out, forever ageless!

We took some time to sit down with the fashionable Alexander to learn more.

You recently tweeted, “I want 2 date, like, everyone I see”, but tell us about your dream leading lady. I'm lucky that I get to work with the ladies I do! They're insanely special inside and out. I definitely look for a sense of humor and someone that can just make fun of themselves.
As someone who essentially started their career on social media, how would you describe your online voice? I like to keep it completely candid. I think my relationship with my followers is really cool. We can talk to each other like friends. It's great. As far as my voice goes, I try to speak out about things I feel passionate about. You’re filming three films right now – an Indie, a comedy and a drama. As a young actor, how do you transition within such an array of genres? That's what I love about acting. I love getting to delve into a ton of different characters. Getting to know your character is one of the funnest parts of the process.
Many of your Instagram posts are very fashionable and Esquire named you one of the best dressed at the Billboard awards. Who do you consider your fashion inspiration? A lot of people! Austin Butler for one and Tom Odell for another. I love layering stuff, so I'm always looking for things to put on top of each other. I've also really been getting into homemade stuff lately. I've been getting patches and sewing them onto my jackets. What inspired your venture into the YouTube video medium from film? I've been making short films since I was in elementary school. I appeared in the movie Red Wing, directed by Will Wallace in 2013 and YouTube came shortly after. When I started my channel, I was so excited because it gave me another place to act. Most fashionable fall accessory for 2016? Sunglasses. I've been buying so many new pairs lately. I think having a good pair of sunglasses completes the look. And lastly, everyone needs to take a break from time to time. How do you spend a day off? I sleep, haha! I feel like I never have time to sleep with my schedule. I will usually lay in bed and read when I can. I love going to the beach and surfing. That's definitely a good way for me to relax. 157

LOS ANGELES CELEBRITY FASHION DESIGNER, MARINA TOYBINA, has learned to tap the power of the red carpet and stage as perhaps one of her most powerful weapons in her arsenal. Celebrities such as Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry, Britney Spears, Usher and Justin Bieber have gravitated toward Toybina to uncover and fulfill the demand for an assemblage of new looks which support their clients to build their personal brands on what is a highly competitive stage. With a wide array of costume designs for a broad range of mediums such as Performance / Television, Music Videos, Concert Tours and Films and Primetime Television under her belt, Marina has certainly made her mark in the world of fashion. Here’s what the four time Emmy Award winning designer has to say about many facets of her career. Everyone has to start somewhere. What was your first job? My very first job, non-paid of course, was creating one of-a-kind designs for stylists to use in editorials and for
Where does your artistic influence come from and when did you start making clothing? My influences are endless. I draw inspiration from many different aspects of life: travel, history, architecture, literature, people and of course, my own experiences. I am on a constant search of self-discovery and evolution, which, in turn, affects my growth as a designer. I was around 15 years old when I first started crafting my own designs and experimenting with different textiles, embellishments and forms of draping. Almost 20 years later, I'm still experimenting and evolving. The process never stops or sleeps. Having worked on tour with musicians such as Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Katy Perry and Ariana Grande - what is the course of action of costuming a tour? Tours are not easy and often very challenging. The process varies from artist to artist and rarely will I experience the same construction or creative formula costuming an entire tour. The work is always broken down in several stages: sketching original designs, approval/feedback by artist and/or creative director, reworking the sketching until all designs are up to perfection, sourcing out materials and construction shops, multiple fittings followed by dress rehearsals and then, of course, it’s show time. What was the most memorable Performance/ Television costume design challenge of your career thus far? Being the costume designer for So You Think You Can Dance is probably the most rewarding and, equally as challenging, experience of my career. For the duration of the show, extreme

hard work, dedication and passion goes into each and every costume. The show is very fast paced, constantly changing gears of inspiration and the creative expectation is always rising. I take a lot of pride in all of my work and will always make sure that my team and I deliver our creations to its full potential; and that type of work ethic, in my opinion, is what produces the most memorable experiences. If given the opportunity, what artist/musician are you interested in costuming a tour for in the near future? It would be a dream to collaborate with artists like Bjork, Lady Gaga and Grace Jones. If speaking theatrics, I am ready to expand my work into Broadway, film and Cirque Du Soleil.

Discuss the experience of designing for a group of tour dancers, having to accommodate incredibly active performers? What specifically are the kind of things you have to pay attention to or do differently when designing for such active performers? Proper materials, pattern making, precise cut of the garment, technical sewing and, of course, logic are the key ingredients to any stage worthy costumes. Movement requires special attention. Dancers must always feel as if the textiles used to create their costumes are an extension of their skin. The costumes have to breathe, move and adjust with the technicality of the choreography, have enough durability and life span to survive any unpredicted malfunction, as well as fully correlate with the visual aesthetic of the show. I always make sure that my costumes create a healthy balance between complexity of construction and stage appeal. You applied 2000 custom chain-andbead embellishments to a piece for Carrie Underwood’s 2016 ‘The Storyteller’ tour. What do you think beads and other tiny details add to the costume? Details and extra embellishments tell an extended story on a costume. The extra work that goes into polishing a specific look or style is what makes the costume unique and unlike any other. What has been the biggest success of your career thus far? It has been a privilege to have my work recognized by my esteemed colleagues by awarding my team and I with four consecutive Emmy wins for outstanding costumes. How do you want people to remember the characters/musicians and their style? Everyone has their own perception and opinion once they are exposed to the visuals of an artist’s catered style, look and/or stage presence. I do hope that over the past decade, my work was able to create its own aesthetic, to where the artists and projects that I've had the pleasure of collaborating with will be remembered in a very daring, unique, artistically fulfilled and special light.

THE BLONDE BEA UTY, Lauren Bennet, who rose to fame by her appearance in LMFAO’s ‘Party Rock Anthem’ is celebrating her own milestone of breaking out solo and reaching millions with her new single ‘Hurricane’.
Having left the all-female group Paradiso Girls to explore her own endeavors, these days Bennett’s songs are less about the party life and more about things that truly matter. ‘Hurricane’, which deals with mental illness, is an anthem to those who may be struggling themselves and offers deep lyrics, passionate vocals and a piano melody that pulls at one’s emotions.
BASIC sat down for a rapid-fire interview with the stunning multitalented up-and-comer. Hurricane deals with mental illness and vulnerability, how do you practice self-care to stay positive and centered? I have to make a conscious effort to keep myself in check, I think it’s so easy to get caught up in your own negative thoughts, especially when it doesn't all go to plan! There are also three rules I follow: I read and study self-help books. I try to do one thing every day that contributes to my goals and I accept that life isn't always perfect. Describe your summer plans in three words. Music, Sunshine, Good times. Tried to make a little rhyme for you… Haha, once a songwriter… What is your top tip for your amazing physique? Don't eat late! Having gotten your start with LMFAO and "Party Rock Anthem", what is your personal party anthem? Me and my friend always put on the song 'Love Rollercoaster' by the Ohio Players and dance like idiots to each other. That song brings much joy to my life, haha. What's one BASIC accessory you never leave the house without? I wear a gold ring on every finger every day and I don't take them off.
