NICOLAS JEBRAN 32

basic-magazine.com

Jebran utilizes sexy silhouettes and precise placement of detail for the calculated feminine beauty.

DESIGNERS: SPRING/SUMMER 2017 COLLECTIONS NICOLAS JEBRAN LOOKBOOK // WORDS BY TARA CICCONE

If the name Nicolas Jebran is not completely familiar to you, I can assure you that his designs are ones you've fawned over recently. The Lebanese fashion designer has taken his talents from his home country's 1999 fashion reality show competition to mainstream media; showing us all that dreams do, indeed, come true. With hard work, innovative vision and unique designs, Jebran has established himself as a go-to for celebrities looking to make a statement. Dressing the likes of fashion icons such as Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Rita Ora and Kylie Jenner; his pieces consistently demand to be seen. We spoke with Jebran in regards to reports of Vogue’s stance on Eastern European designers staying power and we inquired to his thoughts on Arabic design houses and the political climate of our world. Jebran simply stated, “Our ability, as Arabic designers, to combine modern, classy, and trendy puts us in a great place. I'm usually not into politics, but political stability has its influence on every citizen whether local or international, so of course it affects our work, our market and our interpretation of things. Let’s not forget that fashion is a reflection of what we carry inside, whether chaotic or peaceful.”

BASIC believes Nicolas Jebran's newest Spring/Summer 2017 line is no different, telling the story of a woman demanding to be noticed, in the most elegant way. Sultry silhouettes, precise placements of designs and exquisite use of color give his looks that oh so coveted 'wow factor' seldom achieved so organically. “I tend to combine classical with modern,” Jebran told BASIC. “I design dresses inspired by myths, fairytales and different eras. I tend to create my own world of beauty in my designs and transform my collections into a beautiful reflection of my inspiration.” His latest collection mirrors a magical, romantic energy. Neutrals are accompanied by rich gemstone hues coexisting eloquently with cascading loose ruffles, high necks, and high-low hems. The prints, worldly and whimsical, compliment the shape of each piece. No corners were cut when it came to details, the belting on numerous pieces, such as on one of our favorite looks (a black mesh with gold brocade overlay, deep V-neckline, high-low hem, and ornate ruffle) incorporated two gold pearl-like 'loops' for the end of the belt. Jebran's design cross over into their own distinct category of wearable art.

DESIGNERS: SPRING/SUMMER 2017 COLLECTIONS BRYAN HEARNS LOOKBOOK // WORDS BY COURTNEY WILKINS

BRYAN HEARNS Designer Bryan Hearns Blends Sexuality and Street Style No stranger to exposing cut outs, detailed high-slits or form-fitting dresses Bryan Hearns’ edgy designs have led him to the forefront of fashion. The Los Angeles based designer uses the detailing of chain hardware to separate his new collection from the rest. We spoke with Hearns who stated, “The detailing and use of hardware is very much a part of my design aesthetic. Particularly in this collection more so than the others, I love featuring the raw look and feel of industrial hardware in my designs. I love the hard look of piercings from bondage fashion and wanted to make that feel more feminine and soft mixing them and including them with traditional fabrics and silhouettes.” When asked about the overall inspiration behind his S/S 2017 collection, Hearns told BASIC he was very inspired by his move to Los Angeles and the diverse group of friends that surround him. That and a fateful trip to a hardware store that sparked his interest in the elements utilized in the line. Hearns’ Collection 8, Spectrum of Color, pays homage to his street style design aesthetic. He said that it wasn’t the trends of today, per se, that inspired the collection, but that he is “definitely cautious of what people are wearing on the red carpet and on the street.“ The use of textured fabrics, paired with untied classic Cortez Nikes, emphasizes the sporty chic trend. Hearns’ love for sheer and eyelet fabrics created the perfect duo for racy bralettes and miniskirts. Elevating contemporary style pieces into custom creations. With an accent of layered jewelry, trimmings, and chain bondage, the significance of detail was evident. “Designer clothing is all about the details, for me it’s important because it’s that attention to detail that sets my designs apart.” He added. Hues of red, canary yellow, greens, and royal blue used throughout the line shows he was truly influenced by the color spectrum. Collection 8 is a true testament to Hearns’ chain takeover, in remembrance of the streets that raised him. Hearns’ risque looks grace many of today’s hottest stars including: Madonna, Kylie Jenner, Tyra Banks, Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey and Victoria Justice. “I like my designs to reflect the person who wears them; the Bryan Hearns girl is all about owning her sexuality and taking risk.”

DESIGNERS: SPRING/SUMMER 2017 COLLECTIONS DILARA FINDIKOGLU LOOKBOOK // WORDS BY SONAM NAIDU

DILARA FINDIKOGLU

Solacing the voice of women yesterday, today and tomorrow through feminist fashion. Twisted and mangled in glitzy effervescent PVC thigh-high boots, erogenous corseted bustiers and precious satin ensembles scribbled under gothic block lettering, the punk muses of Dilara Findikoglu’s SS17 collection open heartedly saluted female authority. Hues of pretty pinks embodied the runway, portraying the histrionic illustration of women empowerment. Neck breaking peculiarities dating back to the 1800’s honored the rudiments of decorative biker diligence in celebration of the female form. With an unremitting desire to manifest a ballsy

and phenomenal femininity by spotlighting the flashback stages of women portrayal. Commencing with the performing arts of the Shakespearean era – depiction was solely based in the hands of the opposite sex. Women were completely stripped of the opportunity of their own limelight and men were quick to replace and stand in disguise of women. The Turkish designer also shed light on the argumentative period of women comprised of Middle Eastern background – men were highly favored then and women were of course given

epitome of feminist fashion, the former Central Saint Martin’s grad didn’t fall short of exhibiting a brilliant theatrics story encompassed with a hard-hitting message, pleasant goosebumps and lavish fashion. Transitioning the depth of her passion and out of this world aesthetic, Findikoglu served her distinct purpose of synchronizing sportswear, crisp suiting

the back end of the stick. In a single showcase, Dara Findikoglu impaired the controversy of genders and tastefully amalgamated a harmonious blend of dazzling embroidery, infamous black and white harlequin print, substantial doses of leather and lace, tattoo prints and metallic-python textures to solace the voice of women yesterday, today and tomorrow.

DESIGNERS: SPRING/SUMMER 2017 COLLECTIONS IEVA MEZULE LOOKBOOK // WORDS BY TARA CICCONE

IEVA MEZULE Ieva Mezule's collection transports us into an Alice In Wonderland, post-apocalyptic world where utopia is not out of reach. A reset of man, communicated through the larger than life pieces, a monochromatic color palette, and celestial designs; you feel something mystical though you're not quite sure what it is. Mezule's creative process is one taken by a true artist, someone who designs to communicate a message rather than for kicks. She mentions that fashion, to her,

NICOPANDA

Nicopanda celebrates the complexity and diversity of the human race

Labels and restrictions create an existence lived out through the confines of an internal prison; creativity in the fashion world is boundless, transcendent, and kaleidoscopic. Self-proclaimed hotshots who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk are a joke, and Nicopanda is a brand that has taken off the precarious cloak and created a vibrant and rich fashion world of their own. Celebrating the complexity and diversity of the human race, Nicopanda has stepped out of neatly fixated boxes and welcomes the idiosyncratic and obscure with their off-kilter style that is receptive to all. Giving power to the fearless and independent thinkers through bold imprints of empowering words throughout their ‘Passport’ line, Nicopanda stands out from the crowd, loves every inch of you and isn’t slightly afraid to get down with representing equality for all.

RESORT 2017 Unified in a mundane color story and amalgamated through skillfully belted billowed or structured silhouettes – Chanel’s SS17 resort collective connoisseurs obliged to honor a phenomenon that was blissfully crafted and tranquilly wearable. Acknowledging the philosophy of attainability and challenging the physics of normality, the chic enthusiasts spell-bounded in the beguiling radiance of a timeless staple - the cropped waist coat. The coat was recycled repeatedly and paired impeccably with full skirts from “debutante” dresses or flared calf grazers. Certainly, glorified was the esthetic youth of Chanel’s nonchalant, uber-cool muses as they “casually” strolled out in effortless styling of t-shirts, beyond casual footwear and swanky headwear consisting of the classic fedora and hatbands.

RESORT 2017 The unprecedented space invaders of Louis Vuitton’s SS17 resort ocean front, triumphed the shoreline by salvaging the pioneering abundance of Sporty Spices’ casual pride possessions. Cascading the breezy coast, the refreshing transformation of high-low cocktails incorporated structured bodices, knee-high slits and exotic splatters of color-blocking – magnificent yellows, tangerines and cobalt blues. The prodigy of over accentuating every Martian’s silhouette, the simplicity of exposing much skin and the sleek arm candy of a boom-box radio, rehashes athletic wear into a fresh era of Posh’s androgynous sophistication.

RESORT 2017 Exercising the print on pattern “more is more” aesthetic, captivating the extraordinary ultra- groovy “psychedelic” glam and celebrating the vivacious culture from nostalgic history, Jeremy Scott’s Moschino SS17 resort funk fest was theatrically and literally LIT. From the commencement of the carefree pant suits harmonized in black and yellow zebra patterns to mesmerizing Indian mirror-infused wardrobe classifications, it all lured us back to the uber Californian, iconic ‘Cher’era. And the brilliant Hinduism reference of the goddess ‘Lakmi’ who made her vivid debut on an imaginative cocktail cape dress was tastefully underplayed with brilliant blue platforms and an over-stated scarlet red umbrella hat. The colors were astonishingly breath-taking and the progression of animal ornamentations and classic retro daisy nod grew wilder and unrulier as the hippies wandered in their playful, exotic jungle.

Josh Levi is a Model Citzen by Jessica Golich

These days, Josh Levi is what many would call a renaissance man who wears a tower of artistic hats that contribute to the collective maturation of his artistry. It takes a keen focus and a purposeful attitude to push aside the glitz and glam and focus on what matters most; digging within and finding what ignites your own fire. Lighting up television screens worldwide throughout his role as Darius Merriweather on Friday Night Lights and transforming into a singer on The X Factor USA, Levi has dipped and dabbled while morphing into a superstar leaving a lasting impression on hearts and minds around the globe. The Houston raised 18-year-old is now a member of Island Records newest pop sensation supergroup, Citizen Four, who have just released their blazing hot new track, “Testify”. BASIC caught up with the young man with the old soul to discuss his creative magic, Citizen Four’s latest works, what’s in store for the second half of 2017 and more. What is your perception of the power behind how the music industry has addressed the political world through lyricism and artistic expression at this time? This power is my favorite thing about music. I actually think I've grown to make this power be the incentive of my love and dedication to music. At this point in society, culture, and politics, we need every voice to be used and to be expressed and all stories to be told and all perspectives to be explained. For someone like me, it's the only chance I get at telling my story of my position in society--which deserves to be heard.

In the midst of writing your lyrics, do you keep in mind the level of vulnerability in which you approach the process? I am definitely cautious of how much I want to unfold and how much of my reality I’d like to expose but at the same time I consciously balance how my voice isn't only for me or about me. I must help other people with my power and do that at all costs. If you could sit under the table and listen to any two human beings have a conversation to draw inspiration, who would you choose? Beyonce and Michael Jackson.

Talk to us a bit about what is in store for the second half of 2017 with Citizen Four. And what’s a message you’d like BASIC to relay to your fans? Citizen Four will be releasing a ton of music this year and following our current single, "Testify", with consecutive singles throughout the year. The one thing I always want fans to know is to spread their wings no matter the space or environment--despite surrounding people's judgement or fear. Be the best you can be even if it means people can't handle it--you shouldn't hold yourself back.

FANTASMABy Mandi Pimental

-

icolas Obery, a French master of digital art and sculpture, invited BASIC into his clouded world of imagery. Having worked side by side with luxury brands for 15 years, he has since branched off to create his own works. Works that will make you take notice of Obery’s own upside-down entertainment industry darkened by a veil of mystery. Obery balances the nuances of real and fantasy by “researching the subject’s life and story and changing the usual imagery one has of said person to create a different reality.” Altering famous faces and brands such as Absolut Vodka, Karl Lagerfeld, Elvis Presley and more, Obery breathes life into his unique projects with a primarily dark palette, shadow play and a strategic use of light.

As greyscale, black and white take a powerful front seat, as seen on his controversial “Fetish” piece and his aquatic dessert mashup, “Fresh Fish”, BASIC asked Obery on the inspiration behind his somber choice. Obery stated that “being a fan of black and white photography and not getting to work with black and white much in advertising”, led him to a love of creating the obsidian-esque works. Take note of an artist that strives to rival masters such as Salvador Dali and Giuseppe Arcimboldo. Except that his canvas is digital and his main goal lies in recreating a parallel, surreal world by reinterpreting and reproducing mythical elements and characters. As endearing as he is talented, Obery left us with the ritual in which he gets into the zone. “Sitting in my office surrounded by books and superhero toys.” Catch Nicolas Obrey as he continues to exhibit, experiment with new techniques and collaborate with photographers and visual artists throughout 2017. Star Wars fans rejoice. New York based designer, Blank William has created his latest collection The New Order Stormtroopers and it is a definitive showcase of Star Wars meets the wild. Created out of glossy chrome and various textured additions in a palette of black and white you’ll find a rhino, hippopotamus and elephant ready to charge. Each sculpted soldier is armored and distinctively polished with gold trim pronouncing the animalistic facial features. BASIC magazine sat down with Blank William to dive deeper into his exhibit.

91

How do you wish the public to view a Blank William project? I would like for my work to be considered contemporary art. We know the inspiration that led to the New Order Stormtroopers pieces, and as a Star Wars fan, I can appreciate the nod. What was the inspiration behind the similarly sculpted figures of the Stampede: White project? Stampede was based on popular Nike shoes. The Roshe Run, Air Force Ones, and the Air Jordans. I took it from a shape and detail perspective, not pushing too far to recreate a shoe. Blending an animal head with a shoe can very easily push into kitsch. I felt the treads and general proportion of each shoe was enough to communicate my idea. The deer is the roshe, the ram, the Air Force Ones, and the bull - of course - is the Jordans.

And what about the more understated Kingdom Figures? Kingdom Figures was meant as a collection for a chess set. The star pieces are the Tortoise and the Hare from Aesop's fable. The two animals have very contrasting movements which is reflected in the pieces they represent - the King and Queen. The back of the Tortoise has the cross reflected in the King chess piece. The other animals are all North American forest creatures. The squirrel in my mind moves like a bishop as well as having the cut detail worked perfectly to simulate a squirrels two teeth. The Frogs movements is like a knight hopping around the board. The owls fly straight, much like rooks, and the snails have the most limited movements. For the shapes, I wanted a somewhat humanoid form defined by strong fluid lines and surfaces. As for the board, I wanted to create an abstract piece of earth ripped from the ground.

Lastly, what can we expect to see from the Blank William studio in the 2017/2018 season? I'm working on a piece right now that expresses my views on what's going on in the politics of our country right now. Of course, everyone has their views on the president and I do think he makes an easy target. My thoughts, however, revolve around my stance on our system being broken and that the GOP is a big cause of it. I can go on into great depth on my feelings here, but that’s another time and another interview.

imminent "I”. It is important to stop grasping things by their names. Contemplate the feeling and let it reveal itself.” Genuine to its authenticity, the elusive Ukrainian fashion brand provides visually stimulating and original pieces. Anti-trend - a smoky, soul seducing product crawls out of the designer as if his mood speaks. The collection reveals hard textures like plastic and leather in dark mutually exclusive colors such as rust, brown and black. Each piece is molded into unexpected, yet recognizable shapes (a tire, a gas mask), offering the line dimension while also retaining artistic cohesion.

2017 Met Gala to Showcase Comme des Garçons’ Rei Kawakubo Fascination with Interstitiality Image Left Credits: Rei Kawakubo (Japanese, born 1942) for Comme des Garçons (Japanese, founded 1969), “Blue Witch,” spring/summer 2016 Courtesy of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, © Paolo Roversi

The annual celebration will be co-chaired by Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Anna Wintour, with Kawakubo serving as Honorary Chair. Fashion editors, designers and celebrities wearing elaborate and unique ensembles will reunite for fashion’s biggest night: The annual Met Gala in support of the Costume Institute. Established in 1946, after the Museum of Costume Art merged with The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the annual extravaganza is regarded as one of the most exclusive social events in New York. Traditionally taking place on the first Monday in May, this year the Metropolitan Museum of Art will debut the Costume Institute’s spring 2017 exhibition “Rei Kawakubo/ Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between.” “In blurring the art/fashion divide, Kawakubo asks us to think differently about clothing,” expressed Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Met. “Curator Andrew Bolton will explore work that often looks like sculpture in an exhibition that will challenge our ideas about fashion’s role in contemporary culture.” The 2017 dinner and fundraising benefit will take place on May 1 and be co-chaired by Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, with Kawakubo serving as Honorary Chair. The showcase marks the first monograph exhibition at the museum to focus on a living designer since its Yves Saint Laurent exhibit in 1983. With

“I have always pursued a new way of thinking about design...by denying established values, conventions, and what is generally accepted as the norm,” added Rei Kawakubo. “And the modes of expression that have always been most important to me are fusion...imbalance... unfinished... elimination...and absence of intent.” The showcase will be open to the public from May 4 through September 4 and examine the work of the Japanese fashion designer and her fascination with interstitiality – or the space between boundaries. The collection will feature approximately 120 examples of Kawakubo’s womenswear designs for Comme des Garçons, dating from her first Paris runway show in 1981 to her most recent collection. The show is organized by contrasting themes like East/West, male/female, and past/present to examine the designer’s revolutionary experiments in interstitiality. Last year’s exhibition, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” which explored the role of technology in fashion from the 20th-century to the present, featured more than 170 looks and attracted more than 350,000 visitors. “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” will be featured on the Museum’s website, www. metmuseum.org/ReiKawakubo, as well as on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter via #MetKawakubo, #CostumeInstitute, and #MetGala. Don’t miss all the excitement!

this new exhibition, as is tradition, guests are encouraged to base their attire on the exhibit’s theme and interpret it in their own way.

Kerri’d Away by Liz Calvario

Kerri Medders is on an adventure of a lifetime, living out her dreams as a singer/songwriter in sunny Los Angeles. Fueled by writing and creating music, the 17-year-old Houston, Texas native moved to California to pursue her aspirations; and is just getting started on what promises to be a blossoming career.

With a strong and rapidly growing social media presence, this rising star is using her voice to inspire teens to stand up for what they believe in and be themselves, a trait BASIC respects in young talent. Currently working on her sophomore EP, “Lot 17,” Medders’ new music is about self-discovery and is much more personal than her previous endeavors. Her latest single, “Who R You,” is about struggling with identity and finding a place in this social-media obsessed world, as well as making your own decisions without being influenced by what society has labeled as “cool.” Aside from crafting music, you can catch Medders on screen acting in series that include “Mystery Girls,” Disney XD’s “Gamer's Guide to Pretty Much Everything” and ABC’s “Speechless.” BASIC caught up with the winsome warbler to talk music, style and an idealist perfect existence. Let’s explore “Lot 17”. My music is a reinvention of myself so it’s always changing. It’s my time to explore. For “Lot 17” some topics that I was dealing with while writing these songs were ‘moving on from situations that were never going to happen’ and ‘struggling to keep who I am as a person,’ which heavily translate into the EP. My producers Luke Francis and Brandon Woodward are the best and always have cool creative ideas to try out.

Photographer // Nate Taylor

Hair/Make-up // Nico Doniele

You’ve said in the past that there is pressure on “what you need to be” as an aspiring musician and being in the spotlight, have you felt pressured to grow up too fast or change your look to “fit in?” I don’t feel too pressured to grow up. The thing that gets me is when people shut me out after they hear my age. They don’t take me seriously just because they think I’m too young, before they even get a chance to talk with me. I feel like my generation is becoming so aware of the world at such a young age and we really do have power and purpose in our actions. In the past I’ve thought about changing parts of my appearance to please

Stylist // Samantha Burkhart

people, but now I’m so in love with what I’m creating as an artist that no one could ever change me. In this day and age, what do you believe is the best way to express yourself? And what does that look like for you? There’s only one rule I hold myself to and it’s “Be yourself and get lost in the music.” That saves me. We all find ways to express ourselves and for me that’s through my music. I’m so invested and want my feelings to resonate so deeply with my audience so that we’re literally going through all these journeys and memories together. When I’m performing, I cannot keep still. Your look gives us a sexy, bohemian vibe. Tell us about your style icons… Right now I’m really into 70’s vibes. I’m really digging how other creatives like Dua Lipa are bringing out hints of styles from different eras to create their own unique look and feel. I always look to Marilyn Monroe for style inspiration because, I mean, it’s Marilyn Monroe. In a world that feels like we are living in a constant battle between good vs. evil, describe your ideal world. A world where everyone gets along and we just create music all day together. No phones or social media to worry about, just people expressing themselves with their instruments and songs. And of course, bringing a little of that 70’s fashion, rock n roll and disco back. Leave us with what’s next for Kerri Medders? On April 17th, I released my EP “Lot 17”. My mind is going a million miles a minute every minute, so who knows what can happen next! I’m always creating and working on something new. Right now, my focused goal is Coachella 2018.

with Helly Cee Helly Cee is making her mark in the modeling world with her exotic look and fierce mindset. I had the privileged opportunity to speak with Helly in person during her intense makeup session for her BASIC photo shoot and I must say that she is a true beauty, so kind and fun to chat with. There is an unstoppable attitude from within that makes her beauty radiate. Born Helen Chimon, Helly Cee is a Canadian model of Assyrian decent who knew that she wanted to model from a very young age. As a young girl in Canada, she was approached by many scouts while out with her family. She explained to me that her father was very apprehensive and strict and did not want her to be a child model, however she wouldn’t let her parent’s apprehension stop her and after attending high school (and after getting signed by a Canadian agency at the age of sixteen), she juggled both her modeling jobs and her academia. Since that time, she has gone on to sign with two agencies: one in London, Ontario and the other in Toronto, Ontario, determined to make her dreams a reality. After graduating from high school she really felt the need to move to either Los Angeles or New York in order to move on to bigger and better opportunities, though her parents, yet again, intervened and urged her to get a college degree in order to have a backup plan. Helly went to college and graduated with honors as a Pharmacy Tech. Around this time, she was receiving many offers to model in Los Angeles.

but loves Los Angeles and has no plans of stopping. Tyra Banks and Adriana Lima are counted as her model inspirations - both for their beauty and confidence. Helly’s growing number of followers on Instagram get a glimpse into her life behind the scenes and we touched on if she felt a responsibility to manage staying true to herself and the Helly Cee brand she’s creating. She mentioned that it can be a tricky balance and one that is not easy to navigate but that she always stays mindful. She knows many young girls find modeling glamorous and might assume it is something that comes easy when the reality is that it consists of hard work and discipline. She’s a girl who does not get deterred easily and that is crucial. During her savored pockets of downtime, she enjoys her family (who have since moved to California), music and time with her friends. Helly eventually wants to launch an eco-friendly clothing line. Therefore, she is embracing the LA lifestyle – both in work and style. Helly has also had the opportunity to cultivate good relationships with people within the industry and is expected to appear in a few small roles in upcoming

She took hold of the opportunities, booked a one-way flight to LA and has never looked back. She let me know the truth of the job and how tough it can be and the competition can be hard but after talking to her she stands firm on one belief: “Do what makes you happy and never give up” Helly said. She also added, “No one can do it for you and that is part of the beautiful journey.” Helly misses home at times

Words by: Megan J. Phillips Of Sur Le Mur Art by: Alex Ross Wonder Woman is the epitome of strength, grace, wisdom, and beauty. She is the iconic feminist and superheroine whom has endured the test of time. Today, she is more relevant than ever, in this political climate, as she continues to symbolize truth, honor, and the power of the female spirit. If only we had a Wonder Woman to save us in reality. We do have a glimmer of hope, as little girls around the world twirl, in their backyards, hoping to save the world just like Wonder Woman, unknowingly manifesting the breaking of barriers and the proverbial glass ceiling.

BASIC spoke with Ma on what guides him, inspires him and the passion that drove him to partner with some of the largest automotive companies in the world. With such a diverse portfolio of artistic creations, can you speak on what guides your creative process? Art imitates life. Art is deep in everyone's inner heart. Most of my artistic creations come from my feelings of life and my daily experience. When you have experiences, things flow naturally out of you. Better yet, my art can have a positive impact on others by working from my heart. Let’s talk about your partnership with BVLGARI. The subtle brushstrokes of Chinese calligraphy make for a sophisticated timepiece. Is there a specific meaning behind the chosen designs / phrases, or were they designed to be random? It's a random design. I think a good art piece goes beyond boundaries. BVLGARI is from Rome which is translated to 'Luo Ma' in Chinese. I always wanted to combine Chinese horses and Western horses. It was an interesting idea to harmonize them together. Traditional Chinese Calligraphy has only black and white color, and the traditional Chinese painting colors are very beautiful. I used these special colors to write Chinese calligraphy, blending the two. It really fit together.

From impressive and grand scale projects such as your furniture and sculptural work, to the delicate nature of your porcelain paintings and crossover projects, how do you choose where you’ll utilize your talents and energy each year? I like interesting things. I'd like to try anything. So, most of my art works are created by accident. In my opinion, nothing is impossible and everything can crossover. I would love to do works that can be retained and handed down to the next generation. What led you to your role as the art director for high end automotive companies such as Ferrari and Porsche? Are you an automotive enthusiast? Yes, I am an automotive enthusiast. I am an artist for Ferrari, Ducati and Lamborghini. I also love speed. Speed can bring about special feelings. Speed lets me feel enthusiastic and energetic. What's more, art is always related to a sensation. Your work has been presented in many exhibitions worldwide. Is there one that stands out to you as a highlight in your career thus far? I held many exhibitions and it's hard to choose just one. If I have to choose, I think it would be my 'Ink·Brush·Heart' in Venice Biennale.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

LIANGJIAN SHI (JOHNA SHI)

Words by // Sonam Naidu

E

nriching the dawn of space-age Twiggy and the hypnosis of infinite repetition through the revolutionary mash up of sporadic stripes, irregular profiles and a balanced color story, Liangjian Shi – Johna Si sincerely dedicated herself to the splendor of her ‘Circle’ showcase. Born and raised in Xinjiang, Urumqi, China, the former BFA fashion design graduate from Parsons Paris flabbergasted guests at Saks Fifth Avenue for her foremost yet superbly fascinating thesis collection – a six look exhibit, paying all glory to the various shapes and volume fashioned from the simplicity of the endless sphere. Enthusiastically branding her imprint and remarkably sauntering her way into playing the game right – BASIC notes that the contemporary womenswear designer’s primary creations utilize the brilliance of her solo authenticity and the dominance of slashing and slaying the strategic stratagems of a single shape. Muses, disguised as Martians from outer space, seized the catwalk in diversified unity of MOD enthused PVC collars, pieces concealed voluptuous silhouettes and subtle feminine elements were integrated through exquisite pleats and prominent ruffles. Her honorable sweet treat for the peepers, and a BASIC favorite, were the stunning luxury shoes (next spread) manufactured and originated in Italy that strengthened every look, flaunted by her uber fresh connoisseurs triumphing over the runway. Although, the rightful luminosity which sincerely amplified Johna’s credibility as a first-hand designer was the prodigy brainwave skillfully concealed within each attire piece and her quirky, impressive shoes. Through the depth and appeal of her iconic first collection, prosperous kudo’s to Johna Shi on her immaculate creative vision and victoriously intersecting the beginning, middle and end of a circle.

Shoe Polytechnique Sponsorship Award is a collaboration between Parsons The New School For Design and Politecnico Calzaturiero in Italy. Winners receive the reward of having their own designed shoes made in Italy, as a pivotal component of our Thesis work.

During the collaborating process, the designers and shoe makers work closely together in order to achieve the design and concept. On the first stage, the Italian team came to New York and brought prototypes to communicate with the designers. On the second stage, designers traveled to Italy to work with the team and gain knowledge of luxury shoe making process. Finally the six pairs of shoes arrived in New York as part of our Thesis Collection. It was such an honor to have won this competition, the experience was amazing, and I'm so proud of the final results.
