Travels With My Camera With Stuart Boyd

Discovering beautiful and unusual things is where photographer Stuart Boyd’s inspiration comes from. His passion is photographing landscapes, nature and wildlife, particularly the simplicity of form, pattern and colour within them; he also has a passion for the abstract in nature. His style of photography has been described as ‘casual’, but he prefers ‘eclectic’.

Family Chess Coaching With Basingstoke Chess Club Get some top tips from Basingstoke Chess Club and learn to command the chess board in this fun workshop for children, young adults and their families. Radio Playwriting One-day Workshop This workshop is for anyone who wants to develop their writing for radio skills – you may have tried writing a piece for radio or have work in progress. Jane Austen’s Guide to Writing With author Rebecca Smith A light-hearted and practical look at Austen’s methods and timeless style for readers and writers with author Rebecca Smith.

For Readers and Writers Sat 14 June / 10am / £4 Jane Austen’s advice to young writers and observations on her craft are as pertinent today as two hundred years ago. This will be a light-hearted session for readers and writers with Rebecca Smith, novelist, University of Southampton lecturer and former Writer in Residence at Jane Austen’s House Museum. The focus will be on Jane Austen’s methods and devices and the way that she went about creating some of the best loved characters of all time. Rebecca will be talking about Jane Austen’s life and habits and the writing of those six wonderful novels.

Inside Film Classification with the BBFC A look inside the fascinating world of age ratings Are you interested in how decisions are made for age rating films? What makes the difference between a 12A and 15 scene, and what material needs to be cut? This masterclass session will reveal the history of the British Board of Classification and how modern guidelines are interpreted when

classifying films. Heidi Renton from the British Board of Film Classification will discuss the legal and ethical considerations and illustrate her presentation with video clips. There will also be an opportunity for a Q&A session. www.bbfc.co.uk

Myths and Mysteries of the First World War Rupert Matthews returns after his popular talks on local ghosts and Jack the Ripper. From the Angel of Mons to the sealed cargo on the torpedoed liner Lusitania, from the secret evidence in the Nurse Edith Cavell trial to the haunted U-boat, the First World War was a hotbed of mysteries and myths. This talk will take us back to original sources to unearth government records kept secret for decades to discover what really went on.

Willow Sculptures One-day Workshop Willow is a fabulous material for sculpture. It lends itself particularly well to birds but you can try animals or human forms. You bring the ideas and local willow artist Judith Needham will teach you the techniques you need. The Making of War Horse First World War Centenary Tasked with keeping battle scenes authentic, Andy Robertshaw was the military consultant for the film War Horse, working with director Steven Spielberg to create the “don’t-miss Spielberg classic that reaches true perfection”. Andy is ready to reveal his behind-thescenes stories, military insight and unique on-set photographs during this unique presentation marking 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. Whilst working as Curator/Manager of The Royal Logistic Corps Museum in Deepcut, Andy is also a regular on Channel 4’s Time Team and featured in the BBC’s Two Men in a Trench series. He also appears in War Horse as a British Officer. Look out for other WWI events this season

Nature Photography With Keith Polwin Nature provides many diverse and wonderful subjects for photography and they may be captured purely as a record or pictorially depending on the intent of the photographer.

Keith Polwin will show photos of all sorts of nature subjects, including birds, insects, flowers, amphibians and mammals, mainly taken in the UK, with a few from abroad taken on photographic holidays.

Nick Ross Crimewatch For over 20 years BBC stalwart Nick presented Crimewatch and became hugely knowledgeable on the subject of crime. Hear him talk about his career in journalism and how his sometimes controversial views set conventional thinking on its head and challenged everything we take for granted, showing why he believes the criminal justice system has little effect on crime rates, how policing has been hijacked to serve the needs of lawyers, and how ‘facts’ about crime are continually manipulated to serve the needs of politicians and the media. A fascinating event with one of the best radio and television presenters. Nick’s latest book, Crime: How to solve it - and why so much of what we’re told is wrong will be available to buy on the night.

A Debt of Honour Commonwealth War Graves Commission This documentary-film screening illustrates how the war cemeteries and memorials came to be established in some 150 countries throughout the world and how, through its work, the Commission records and honours those who died. 300 Years of Weather in the South The weather is never out of the news for long. Floods in Boscastle or droughts in the Southeast; we are often a nation of contrasts. In this illustrated talk weatherman Ian Currie will highlight some of the extreme weather experienced in the South of England over the last 300 years. This includes a blizzard burying trains from London to Devon, a 12-foot snowdrift in Oxford Street and tornadoes in Guildford.

Landscape Photography With Nigel Norris We are lucky to live on an island with a wide range of wonderful scenery. As someone with a passion for photography, this provides Nigel Norris with endless opportunities to try and capture the landscape that surrounds us. Tracing Army Ancestors Family History Workshop Want to find out more about a soldier in your family? This workshop will reveal the many types of record which throw light on the careers of soldier ancestors, including those at The National Archives, in Hampshire Archives and Local Studies, and in regimental archives. This Summer’s exciting new theme is Mythical Maze! The Summer Reading Challenge is a national scheme to support children’s reading across the Summer holidays. Aimed at 4 to 11 year olds, the challenge is for children to read any six books over the Summer, have a quick chat to the team here about their choices and collect stickers to mark their progress. Visitors can follow signs to Festival Place and will find the Discovery Centre opposite Nationwide, near the Church Street entrance.
