Welcome to the Discovery Centre The Discovery Centre is now three years old and 2013 was another busy year, as a whopping 312527 books, magazines, CDs and DVDs - just from Basingstoke - were borrowed. If you laid these items out on the floor they could make a path running all the way from Basingstoke to Fareham! You’ll see another broad range of events lined up in this guide, but if there’s anything you’d like to see us put on, do get in touch. The team and I all look forward to seeing you soon. The Battle of the Sexes Poetry Recital

On the eve of St. Valentine’s Day, local actors Brenda Palmer and Bryn Strudwick team up to present a pot-pourri of poetry and prose to celebrate the ageold bitter-sweet relationship between the women from Venus and the men from Mars.

Want a better vocabulary, memory, analytic ability and verbal versatility? Learn how to solve cryptic crosswords and why it’s so good for your brain, from a crossword-loving memory researcher. Bring along the cryptic crossword from your favourite newspaper/magazine and by the end of the workshop you’ll be solving it yourself. Two hours of enlightening fun.

LEGO Animation Workshop Tue 18 Feb, £6 9am, 11.30am & 2.30pm

Back by popular demand! Make a short film with others using characters and sets made entirely from LEGO. Cameras, lighting equipment and laptops will be used to produce a short film available to download soon after the workshop. Workshops last two hours and are most enjoyed by ages 5-12.

Creepy Crawlies Meet the Mini-Beasts! Introduce your children to the real stars of I’m a Celebrity… with live insects and mini-beasts. Starring Giant Stick Insects, a Chile Rose Tarantula, Giant Millipede, Giant Land Snails and more, children will love this creepy-crawly experience led by a retired Zoo-Keeper. Children will discover lots of information about these creatures and their camouflage, how they protect themselves and how they hunt for food. Sessions last 45 minutes.

Gardens of the National Trust with Nick Lightfoot Thu 27 Feb, 2pm, £3

The National Trust has the finest collection of gardens in the United Kingdom. Nick Lightfoot, Gardens & Countryside Manager from the National Trust, will present a travelogue around the country stopping off at some of the most beautiful and interesting gardens along the way. The different types and periods, characters, stories involved and why the gardens were acquired in the first place will be explained in this insightful afternoon talk.

Britain Had Talent with Oliver Double Sat 8 Mar, 2pm, £3

Oliver Double, author of Britain Had Talent: A History of Variety Theatre, will tell you about the comedians, singers, dancers, acrobats, magicians, ventriloquists and other speciality acts who made variety what it was, and show you items from his collection of variety artefacts. Oliver started his career as a lecturer at Liverpool John Moores University in 1997, before arriving at the University of Kent in 1999, where he is currently Head of Drama. Before working in universities, Oliver was a professional stand-up comedian on the national comedy circuit (‘Delightful’ -The Guardian), a member of Red Grape Cabaret, and used to run the Last Laugh, Sheffield’s longest running comedy club. You may have heard Oliver on such programmes as Fry’s English Delight (Radio 4), Little Howard’s Big Question (BBC1) and 100 Greatest Stand-Ups (C4).

Hampshire County Cricket 150 Not Out 150 years ago this Summer Hampshire County Cricket Club played their first official match. Join author and Hampshire CCC expert Dave Allen talk about his latest book, 150 Not Out, where he covers the history of the club and how they have developed. Essential for all local sports fans.

Educating Basingstoke: a local history Barbara Applin of the Basingstoke Archaeological & Historical Society will highlight many of Basingstoke’s schools and colleges over the years. Using school records, newspaper reports and photographs to describe how they were built and used, together with recorded interviews from staff and students, the afternoon will be a meeting place for both nostalgia and local history.

Everyday First Aid with The British Red Cross Suitable for ages 18+, this course is for anyone wanting a flexible and informal first aid session, making skills simple to do and easy to remember. Using relevant, real-life scenarios and everyday household objects.

Jack the Ripper with Rupert Matthews Mon 31 Mar, 2pm, £3

Rupert returns after his sold out talk on local ghost last season. What was it like to live through Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror? In this entertaining talk, historian Rupert explains how the police came very close to catching Jack the Ripper, missing him by less than 10 seconds on one occasion, and speculates on why the horrific trail of murders stopped so suddenly.

How to Read a Graveyard with Peter Stanford How to Read a Graveyard: Journeys in the Company of the Dead takes readers to a pagan necropolis in ancient Rome, a Neolithic barrow, medieval English churchyards, the war graves of Northern France and a modern ecocemetery. It is a personal and reflective, but never gloomy, travelogue with a difference. Peter Stanford is a writer, journalist and broadcaster. His books include biographies of the Labour Cabinet minister and penal reformer, Lord Longford; the Poet Laureate, C Day-Lewis; Bronwen Astor; and Cardinal Basil Hume. His books have been translated into eleven languages. Peter writes for the Daily and Sunday Telegraphs, the Independent and the Observer. with Judith Needham

Judith can make almost anything from Willow. Play dens, giant teddy bears and christmas decorations are all typical creations for her. Having had her work featured in the Daily Telegraph, Country Living magazine and Surrey Life

magazine, she turns her attention to teaching in the new year with three creative workshops. What could be better than learning a new skill, creating something beautiful and relaxing all at once? Book early to avoid disappointment.

Willow Hearts Perfect Valentine’s Gift? Just in time for Valentine’s Day, Judith will show you how to use willow and other natural materials to make a heart to decorate your home or give as a gift. Men welcome! Suitable for adults, romantics and ages 14+. The workshop lasts two hours.

Five groups meet at the Discovery Centre: Tuesday Group, Thursday Group, Men’s Reading Group, Hearing Impaired Group and Visually Impaired Group. Setting up a group of your own is surprisingly easy. Ask a member of the team for more information on your next visit.

Start your own group If you’ve ever wished there was a group that read the same books as you, played the same games or had the same hobbies, perhaps you could start one yourself. Basingstoke Discovery Centre can help you to set up a group in the centre by helping to advertise it and giving advice.
