MYTHS AND MYSTERIES OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR Mon 23 June / 2pm / £3 Rupert Matthews returns after his popular talks on local ghosts and Jack the Ripper. From the Angel of Mons to the sealed cargo on the torpedoed liner Lusitania, from the secret evidence in the Nurse Edith Cavell trial to the haunted U-boat, the First World War was a hotbed of mysteries and myths. This talk will take us back to original sources to unearth government records kept secret for decades to discover what really went on.
THE MAKING OF WAR HORSE Thu 3 July / 7pm / £5 Tasked with keeping battle scenes authentic, Andy Robertshaw was the military consultant for the film War Horse, working with director Steven Spielberg to create the “don’t-miss Spielberg classic that reaches true perfection”. Andy is ready to reveal his behind-the-scenes stories, military insight and unique on-set photographs during this unique presentation marking 100 years since the outbreak of the First World War. Whilst working as Curator/Manager of The Royal Logistic Corps Museum in Deepcut, Andy is also a regular on Channel 4’s Time Team and featured in the BBC’s Two Men in a Trench series. He also appears in War Horse as a British Officer.
RESEARCHING WAR MEMORIALS Sat 9 August / 10am-12noon / £10 War memorials can be researched from various angles: military, social, and family history, and as artistic objects. Find out more about how war memorials were funded and created, and how to research the names on them using archives from Hampshire Archives and Local Studies.You will have the chance to see copies of sample documents for First and Second World War memorials.

A DEBT OF HONOUR Thu 28 August / 2pm / FREE This documentary-film screening illustrates how the war cemeteries and memorials came to be established in some 150 countries throughout the world and how, through its work, the Commission records and honours those who died.
TRACING ARMY ANCESTORS Sat 27 September / 10am-12noon £10 Want to find out more about a soldier in your family? This workshop will reveal the many types of record which throw light on the careers of soldier ancestors, including those at The National Archives, in Hampshire Archives and Local Studies, and in regimental archives. It is aimed at beginners and those who may have done a little research.You will have the chance to see copies of sample documents from the 19th and 20th centuries.
WOMEN AND THE GREAT WAR Thu 16 October / 2pm / £5 Join author and costume historian Lucy Adlington for this inspiring insight into the lives and aspirations of women in the First World War, as revealed through their clothes.
