PRELIMINARY FINAL SEABL WOMEN – 7:00PM
TODAY’S GAME IS SPONSORED BY
FROM THE FRONT OFFICE The big question today is will we be standing at the end of the night… three Supercats teams take to the court and all three face elimination if they don’t perform. We kick off the day with our BigV Division One girls in action against Keilor, this is game 2 of their Semi-Final series and all things going to plan we will be back at the Arena on Sunday at 2pm for a chance to play in the 2017 Grand Final Series. The second game to start is our Men’s Preliminary Final clash with Nunawading over the other side of Melbourne. Missing DeMarcus Gatlin our men will have to find another gear to ensure a meeting with Mt Gambier and a shot at our first Championship since 2010. Then finally our SEABL women. For those at the Geelong Arena tonight you are in for a treat, our girls have played outstanding basketball all year, the young breed of Supercats are fearless and will take it up to SEABL newcomers Sydney Uni. But don’t expect it to be a one way street, despite this fact that our girls kept Sydney to just 35 points last time we met, last weekend they had 6 players in double figures beating Nunawading by 10, 85-75. As this is the final HOME GAME PROGRAM for 2017 I would like to take the opportunity to thank a number of people and businesses. Firstly to Chris Burrell, our former Chairman and Managing Director of Luina Bio, Fuse Advisory and Zuccero. Chris has been an amazing supporter of the Supercats and Basketball Geelong for many years and later this year will conclude his maximum six year tenure on the Basketball Geelong Commission. Chris is not a headline grabber and prefers to work in the back ground to ensure the business is better for his and his businesses involvement and we could not be more thankful for his continued support. To our other sponsors, new and old we thank you. Without you we do not have an elite basketball program and that point is never lost on us. To the Supercats Production Team, led by Julia O’Keefe and technically by Greg Edge of Total Events, we would not produce the high calibre of game nights we do without them. To Wes, Brunger (Mark), John, Lachie, Luke, Steve, Nat, Mitch, Stuart and all the other staff that have helped to make this an amazing year, THANK YOU. Special thanks to our front of house team, especially Owen & Caroline McNicol who have manned the doors at every game this year. We are all thankful for your commitment to the club. Again our game nights would not be the spectacle they are without your help. To the Score table (especially David & Robyn) and Stats team, and the many other volunteers. We are all better for your involvement and we hope that you get as much enjoyment out of the games as the effort you are putting into making them better. To the staff of Basketball Geelong, firstly Aaron Lothian who’s primary role is Sponsorship Manager but never hesitates when he is asked to set up signage, ice baths, history walls, foyer barriers, or print tickets, make members packs… pretty much anything that is not specified in his job description. Thank you. To Sarah Monck, Lukas Bentley and Deb Scannell… A change of focus this year has these three sharing duties in the Supercats Shop during the week and on game nights which has streamlined the communication and workload for all. To Mark Giles, Sam Ryan, Harriot Toogood from the Geelong Arena, to Scott Parker, Bill Busbridge and the afore mentioned Greg Edge of Total Events… without your continued efforts and commitment to the club our game nights and the venue would not be the best in the league. But with you they are. To the players and coaches. You continue to amaze us all. For our men to be in their 20th straight finals series and our women to finish equal 1st given the year they have just experienced is nothing short of remarkable. We thank you for all the effort you put into the sport you love and like with all others involved in the game, we hope it gives you as much joy to play as it does for us watching you excel. Good luck to all tonight, let’s go win some championships. Finally to the fans, hopefully our journey does not end tonight. We would love to hear you yelling and screaming for two more weeks. You are the most loyal and dedicated people in the sport and our players love having you as part of the team. Enjoy the final night in the Geelong Arena for 2017. #SeeRed #SupercatsFamily Regards, Dean Anglin CEO
CLUB NEWS MY RUSSIAN EXPERIENCE SEABL men: Supercats’ star import DeMarcus Gatlin suffers finals-ending injury DAMIEN RACTLIFFE, Geelong Advertiser August 17, 2017
THE SUPERCATS title claims have been dealt a cruel blow with star import DeMarcus Gatlin set to have surgery today on a fractured foot, ruling him out for the rest of the campaign. Gatlin, who has averaged 19.6 points a game and earned himself a spot in the All-SEABL second team of the year, injured his foot in last weekend’s elimination final victory over Sandrigham. Scans have revealed a Jones fracture in his fifth metatarsal which would normally rule him out for four to five weeks. “It seems like a fairly routine procedure for him now — he’s just got to have a pin put in it and then it’s got to heal, but that will rule him out for the rest of the season,” Supercats chief executive Dean Anglin said. “The surgeon said that if the finals started in four weeks’ time, he’d be playing finals. Four or five weeks, he’d be back in, so if it happened three weeks ago, he’d probably be back in for the All-SEABL final if we made it. “At the end of the day, he did it playing the game; he knows these things happen, injuries are something you’ve got to overcome. “He’ll be out (of hospital) on Friday and I’ve got no doubt he’ll be at the game on Saturday. “He’ll be as much part of the team as Nic Owusu has been all year sitting on the bench; he’ll be providing advice and options for the coaching staff and that’ll be his job now for the next few weeks.” Gatlin isn’t exactly sure how the injury occurred, but it’s believed he landed awkwardly in a lay-up. “Even DeMarcus doesn’t actually know,” Anglin said. “He thinks it happened (when) he went for a lay-up; as he went for the lay-up, somebody stood on the heel of his shoe and his shoe came off, and then as he landed, he thinks he landed on his foot, so it was fairly innocuous. “None of us even saw it and we can’t find the vision of it to see what actually happened. “He went back on the court for a little bit but the physios brought him off.” While Anglin downplayed the loss of Gatlin to the men’s side, the guard is sure to leave a void. Last time the Supercats played Nunawading, in a 20-point win, Gatlin nailed a match-high 27 points. It will be incumbent on veterans Nathan Herbert and Jamie Medved to fill the scoring hole left by Gatlin. “He’s a scoring machine, there’s no doubt about it, but at the end of the day there’s a lot of scoring on that team,” Anglin said. “We’re just going to need more production out of Jamie Medved, Kris Blicavs and Kristian Rocci. “The positive for us is we selected 11 players at the start of the year and we’ve only played with 10, with Nic Owusu not making it on the court — the nine players we’ve got left are all very high-quality players. “We still think we’re a shot. We think we match up very well against Nunawading.” The Supercats face Nunawading away from home on Saturday night for a spot in the conference final against Mt Gambier.
