It’s SEABL Round 10 time and we welcome back to the Geelong Arena Agnes Emma-Nnopu. A rising of Geelong and the Bellarine Agnes has made the move to the COE and in her 5 games this season is averaging 2.8 points. Agnes has recently been selected in the Australian U17 Sapphires to compete at the FIBA Under-17 World Cup to be held in Minsk, Belarus from July 21-29. Join us in welcoming back Agnes and wishing her the best of luck for the upcoming World Cup. From a club point of view, we have begun preparations for our 40th Anniversary Dinner. Our events committee of Beth Davis, Jennifer Freind and Julia O’Keeffe has recently produced and outstanding Business Luncheon and will no doubt create a gala dinner that truly reflects the clubs amazing history, the stories of the generations and allows everyone to come together as one big family. The event will be held on the revised date of August 24, with details to be released shortly. However you can register your interest in the event on our website right now so you don’t miss out on the official release of information. Finally with the School Holiday’s fast approaching we have released the details of all of our holiday camps, clinics and game days. We will again host the regular SUPERCAMPS, with DeMarcus Gatlin, John Davis leading the way. Chelsea Poppens and Daniela Wallen with dazzle the girls with our Girls on the Ball camp and kids have the chance to be trained by super coach David Herbert, in Hoopin’ with Herbie. On top of these great training opportunities, we also have mascot night and Superhero Night coming up through the holiday period to ensure the kids have a great night out.
Thanks again for you continued support, strap yourself in, we have 6 straight weeks of supercat action coming your way. #40YearsStrong #SeeRed #GetLoud #SupercatsFamily Regards, Dean Anglin CEO
WOMEN’S PREVIEW Having scrapped home in their final game before the mid-season break against Frankston, the 8th placed Lady Supercats will be looking to get the second half of the season off on the right foot when they face Australia’s young guns from the Basketball Australia Centre of Excellence, a team that has rotated 18 players through their team in just 13 games, the BA COE have struggled with consistency. With the final 8 games of the season containing 5 games against teams above them on the ladder, the Lady Supercats need to ensure they win tonight to ensure they stay in touch with the lead group, but four games against two of the top 3 teams, including two against the undefeated Bendigo Braves will test our girls and determine one way or the other if they are capable of defending their title.
MEN’S PREVIEW If you ask Coach Leon O’Neill about the season so far he would clearly admit we have performed below expectations, a proud program with 40 years of history is sitting outside the eight at the mid-season break. But with 6 of our final 9 games at home and a trip to Mt Gambier who have been injury ravaged this season our boys remain confident of making the finals and then challenging for the title. “The new inclusions to this year’s team John Davis, Michael Luxford and Matty Johns have fitted in really well with the existing group of players and our chemistry remains one of our greatest strengths” O’Neill said to Supercats Media. For the first time in history the Supercats will face a Basketball Australia COE team that sits above them on the ladder. Our boys will need to be 100% ready to go tonight as the COE have so far recorded wins against Ballarat and Dandenong, two teams that sit above us on the ladder and beat Frankston convincingly who we lost to in our last game.
WHAT THE SEABL EXPERTS ARE SAYING ABOUT GEELONG AT THE MID-SEASON BREAK Damian Arsenis – The Pick and Roll Women’s Top Four Pre-Season: Launceston, Geelong, Diamond Valley, Kilsyth. Mid-Season update: I still think that Kilsyth have the depth and talent to take it right up to Bendigo but after seeing Geelong and Diamond Valley in action, I’m no longer convinced they have the teams to challenge for the title let alone a place in the top four. Bruce Mitchell – Southern FM Men’s Top Four Pre-Season: Nunawading, Bendigo, Mt. Gambier, Geelong. Mid-Season update: Nunawading, Kilsyth, Hobart, Ballarat. Only Nunawading remains with Bendigo, Mt Gambier, Geelong now replaced. This change is based upon team depth, stability and injuries after having seen almost all teams play. Mark Quinn- Basketball Australia Men’s Top Four Pre-Season: Nunawading, Kilsyth, Geelong, Ballarat. Mid-Season update: Nunawading, Kilsyth, Ballarat, Dandenong- The Rangers, after a slow start have been playing well and will only get better once Anthony Drmic returns from his season break in USA. Jordan McCallum- CrunchTimeShots Men’s Top Four Pre-Season: Mt. Gambier, Nunawading, Kilsyth, Geelong. Mid-Season update: Kilsyth, Ballarat, Hobart, Nunawading. Four strong teams that I had in my top six in the preseason. Mt Gambier and Geelong have started slower than expected but their remaining fixtures are okay which should see them make a move up the ladder. Women’s Top Four Pre-Season: Kilsyth, Diamond Valley, Launceston, Geelong. Mid-Season: Bendigo, Kilsyth, Dandenong, Nunawading. Kilsyth were the obvious choice in the pre-season but then it was difficult to nail down exactly who would be where amongst a large group of teams.

STAR KEY TO PUSH FOR FINALS BERTH GEELONG Supercats import Demarcus Gatlin will be given more licence to take games into his hands as the SEABL outfit presses for a spot in finals. Coach Leon O’Neill said Gatlin, who averages 17.3 points and 7.2 rebounds a game, had been too selfless at times in the Supercats’ 6-5 win-loss season. “We speak about knowing what a good shot is and what’s a must-take shot for the team,” O’Neill said. “Even if it’s maybe not the best shot for him, he just sometimes has to take them. He’s getting better at that. “He’s never been that type of player; in every team he’s been in he’s been a team-first guy and getting him to see he needs to be a little bit selfish at times is something that we continue to work on. Him doing that then takes pressure off other people. “His numbers aren’t what they were last year but playing alongside John Davis this year instead of Eric Gaff is a very different proposition for him.” Gatlin’s 17.3 points a game is only down slightly on last season’s 19.6 average, but the Supercats are better equipped in attack with new import Davis returning 20.7 points a game. While Davis, Gatlin and captain Nathan Herbert (17.9 points a game) form a dangerous three-pronged attack, O’Neill said his side’s poor defence was the reason why the Supercats sat outside the top eight. “In games we lose, we still manage to put up 85, 86 points, but when we get it wrong on defence we give up 100,” he said. “We’re getting to where we need to be, we’re pretty close, I think, but we’re running out of games — we need to be very good and very good in a hurry.” With nine games left, the Supercats can start their run towards finals with a win over Basketball Australia’s Centre of Excellence at The Arena tomorrow night. A win there would see them jump into the top eight ahead of a crucial double header against Frankston — who the Supercats lost to earlier this month — and top side Kilsyth. “Would I like to swap spots with a team further up the ladder? Absolutely,” O'Neill said. “But we’re not too far away from where we want to be.”
