Technologies for Tomorrow >

Our third goal is to take advantage of the future growth of semiconductors and to expand this division. Moreover, as a fourth step we will utilize our core competencies from these technologies for the set-up of new work areas with additional earnings potential.

Dr.-Ing. Stefan Rinck Chief Executive Officer

Dr.-Ing. Stefan Rinck comments: “SINGULUS is involved in two megatrends of mankind: entertainment and renewable energies. Our two foremost goals are to remain market leader for production systems for dual-layer Blu-ray discs as well as for upcoming disc formats and to establish ourselves as a development partner for future solar cell generations.

We develop technologies for people… With our two business segments Optical Disc and Solar we offer technologies increasing our quality of life and ensuring a sustainable supply of energy. The machines, which we develop and construct, enable progress benefiting our and subsequent generations. Our Blu-ray machines form the basis for a visual experience and entertainment at the highest level. In this market we are the No. 1 – and ready for the next generation of Optical Discs.

... and enable the solar technology for the future. With our second pillar we are establishing ourselves as a supplier of machines and development partner of the photovoltaics industry for the next generation of highly efficient solar cells. Our technologies ensure the supply of energy in the future on the basis of renewable energies. In our third work area, Nano Deposition, we provide machines for MRAM wafers, the potential storage medium of the future. What makes us unique is our know-how in vacuum coating, in automation and our ability to combine several process steps into integrated production lines. Due to the combination of these features we are able to continuously expand our technologic advantage and to develop new work areas.

Optical Disc Automation

HDTV and 3D-enabled TVs are increasingly found in households – a trend, that due to the larger amounts of data for HD and 3D movies, is only possible with Blu-ray. The market for the high definition format grows with double-digit rates globally – a growth which SINGULUS participates in with its high-performance production system BLULINE II, the global benchmark for Blu-ray disc production. SINGULUS is the only provider for production machines for dual-layer Blu-ray discs with a capacity of 50 GBytes. The company was successful in automating all key production steps and integrating them in a single manufacturing process. Hence, this made the commercial mass production of Blu-ray discs cost-effective. The enthusiasm for the picture and sound quality of Blu-ray continues: blockbusters such as Harry Potter, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and the planned Avatar 2 in 3D suggest new sales records. To strengthen its position as market leader SINGULUS invests in machine formats for rewriteable Blu-rays as well as next generation Optical Discs and development production equipment for Blu-ray formats with a storage capacity of 100 GByte and more.

Solar Integration

The know-how in vacuum coating, in the automation and process integration acquired in the area of optical storage media is utilized by SINGULUS‘ engineers to develop new and efficient solar production equipment. Here, we are establishing ourselves as a supplier of machines but increasingly also as a development partner of high-performance cells. SINGULUS is expanding its activities in this segment and cooperates with leading solar cell manufacturers worldwide to develop new processes, which improve the efficiency of solar cells and at the same time reduce costs. Owing to such innovative leaps, the production of solar cells becomes ever more cost-efficient. The cells become more efficient and economic, so that grid parity – the competitiveness of solar energy – will be achieved in some countries shortly. In particular in the emerging markets, in the earth’s so called sun belt, this will result in a boost in demand. With machine concepts and innovative processes SINGULUS enables the further development of the solar technology and therefore the sustainable supply of energy for subsequent generations.

Nano Coating

In the Nano Deposition division SINGULUS TECHNOLOGIES already presented a machine for the vacuum coating of so-called MRAM (magnetoresistive random access memory) wafer and thin-film write/read heads in 2002. In contrast to today’s traditional DRAM (dynamic random access memory) technology MRAM memory does not lose the saved information without electricity and works very energy-efficiently. For tablet PCs, mobile phone and other mobile data devices MRAM is a technologic revolution and is regarded as the memory technology of the future. SINGULUS expects this semiconductor technology to have a market break-through and to trigger new investments in the MRAM production technology. The first semi-conductor companies have announced the set-up of MRAM production facilities. As one of the few suppliers for production equipment for MRAM wafer SINGULUS has an enormous know-how advantage and therefore an excellent starting position for this growth market.

Tomorrow Expansion

SINGULUS possesses proven know-how in the manufacturing of machines for the vacuum coating of different materials. This technology is successfully applied in both main segments Optical Disc and Solar and forms the basis for the extensive expansion of the Nano Deposition division. SINGULUS intends to extend this know-how for the development of vacuum coating machines to new application areas in the future. Therefore, the company analyzes sectors and work areas for their growth potential. New product developments leveraging existing know-how and opening new market segments in the next couple of years are in the focus. Furthermore, selective acquisitions for the expansion of the product and service portfolio are being considered in the course of this expansion strategy.
