The students. So many of them are engaged in the broader community, and they take advantage of all Bates, Lewiston, and Maine have to offer. What do you love about Bates now?
I love the sense of community and shared experience, both with current students and with alumni. There is a timelessness to what Bates is all about that allows connection across generations of alumni. Although I have been out of Bates for quite a while now, the campus still feels like home. How did Bates prepare you for life after college? Bates and the Bates Economics
department in particular, gave me a great head start on my career by teaching me to think analytically and to organize and effectively express my ideas. The thesis experience was an especially invaluable capstone experience that I am forever grateful for.

THE POWER OF PHILANTHROPY • With gift pledges of $19 million, Bates will create six new endowed professorships and launch the college’s new digital and computational studies program. • The Class of 2016 includes 11 Fulbright winners, two Watson Fellows, two Davis Project for Peace recipients, and a Princeton in Asia Fellow. • Thirty-three Bates students co-authored research with faculty last year. • Alumni, parents, and friends set a Bates record by giving $28.2 million to the college in 2015–16, including $6.52 million to the Bates Fund and $13 million for the endowment.

NAMED SCHOLARS PRO GRAM Gifts of $5,000 or more Named Scholars Program donors may create a scholarship in their name or the name of a loved one through a gift of $5,000 or more, designated to Named Scholars. This renewable support provides students in need with financial support each year. • Provide scholarship assistance to a student with demonstrated financial need within a year of your gift.
• Receive a profile of your scholarship recipient with details about his or her Bates experience. • Get to know your student through correspondence and the annual Mount David Summit event held on campus in the spring.

The Bates Beacons program allows you to divide your Bates Fund gift into affordable monthly increments through recurring, automatic deductions from your credit card or checking account. What’s more, you can continue to direct your leadership-level giving to the Bates programs that mean the most to you. MATCHING GIFTS Many companies offer matching-gift programs to encourage employees to support their colleges and universities. Most companies match dollar-for-dollar, but some will double or triple an employee’s gift. Check with your organization’s Human Resources department about its matching-gift policy. GIFTS OF SECURITIES Gifts of long-term appreciated securities and mutual fund shares may be deducted on your tax statement at fair market value on the date of the transfer to the college.
