WELCOME

Welcome. W

hether you are shopping, sightseeing or just out for a quick bite to eat, there is little doubt that Bath is a stylish destination that offers something for everyone all year round. However, we do try to make an extra effort at Christmas and this year is no exception as we see the Holburne Museum create another spectacular light display in its grounds and we welcome the return of an Ice Rink at Royal Victoria Park.

a live broadcast along with some very special, surprise guests in the city centre. The switch on coincides with The One Show’s Rickshaw Challenge for BBC Children in Need and a team of Rickshaw riders, led by Matt Baker, will arrive in the city on the evening, along with Pudsey Bear. Last year we had over 5,000 people in the centre for the switch on and we are anticipating equally high numbers this year. We are immensely grateful to the newly transformed Waitrose Food & Home in Bath for sponsoring the Christmas lights switch on; without their added support it would simply not be possible to create such an amazing display and event. I would also like to thank the many other shops, bars and restaurants that have agreed to remain open late on this very special evening. Please come, enjoy the atmosphere and celebrate the start of Christmas in the city with us.

One of Bath’s Christmas highlights is the annual switch on of the Christmas Lights and over the past few years we have been lucky enough to have royalty and Hollywood film stars step up to do the honours. This year, we are delighted to be kicking off Christmas live on the BBC, with a televised switch on of Bath’s Christmas Lights taking place on Tuesday 13th November.

Christmas in Bath would not be complete without the return of the Bath Christmas Market which runs this year from Thursday 22nd November to Sunday 9th December. Situated beneath the magnificent Bath Abbey, there really is no better way to get in the Christmas spirit than enjoying a glass of mulled wine while picking up some gifts from the Christmas Market. This year’s market will be the biggest yet, with 140 stallholders selling a delightful array of handcrafted and seasonal gifts.

BBC One Show presenters Matt Baker and Alex Jones will beam the streets of the Bath to the nation and hold

to make getting into the city centre as easy as possible for everyone. That includes late evening departures on the three Park & Ride services from the city (9.30pm) for Christmas, with Sunday services now standard. Using any of the Park & Rides it takes just 10 minutes to get to the centre of Bath. With so many options for getting about cheaply and conveniently, there’s every reason to visit Bath again and again this festive season. (see www.firstgroup.com/bathparkandride for full service details) Whatever your reason for visiting Bath this Christmas, don’t forget to download the Official Bath App - it’s free and a handy, interactive guide to what’s on, where and when in Bath.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Councillor Cherry Beath, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: “This year’s Christmas Lights Switch On Ceremony has put Bath on the map like never before – with a live BBC broadcast on The One Show. CHRISTMAS IN BATH

Shopping in the City ofBath Bath has a great mix of shopping centres, independent markets and local businesses making it a fantastic city to find your Christmas gifts this year.

Southgate

Little Southgate

Having undergone extensive redevelopment Southgate is now a real asset to Bath; boasting over 60 stores and eateries, and benefiting from wide streets with Georgian style architecture that blends in harmoniously with the rest of the city.

Concealed just of the main route of ‘big’ Southgate, this mini-arcade is packed full of exciting boutiques and independents where you can find something a little different. As well as the quirkier ends of fashion there’s some great inspiration for stocking fillers with plenty of accessories and toys to wade through.

Milsom Street

Southgate will be your first port of call for brand name clothing, where you will find everything from H&M and Topshop to Fat Face and Debenhams.

Packed full of designer fashion, Milsom Street is great for picking up something a little more chic. As well as big name labels there are jewellers if you’re looking for something extra special, home-ware stores for the more practical presents and a department store for those in need of some inspiration.

And that’s not all, there’s also a range of electrical goods stores and restaurants with other more specialist shops dotted around too.

City Centre

Meanwhile, pop into Milsom Place for more designer names and some of the city’s best restaurants, ideal for unwinding in after a hard day’s shopping.

Running through the heart of the city, Stall Street and Union Street provide the main shopping stretch in the city centre and are bursting with recognizable high street stores. These in turn are complimented by an assortment of independents that occupy the copious alleys and corridors in the area.

While in the area be sure to take advantage of Broad Street, Green Street and Queen Street, where you’ll uncover further shops and boutiques as well as some great ingredients for rustling up a mouthwatering Christmas dinner.

Wander a couple minutes outside the heart of the shopping route and Pulteney Bridge provides yet more choice for shoppers as well as quaint cafes overlooking the weir.

Kingsmead Square Pop to Kingsmead Square when you need a break from lugging the bags around. The square boasts a plethora of quality restaurants and takeaways providing visitors with a fantastic range of cuisine including burritos,

Thai and Chinese food, a noodle bar, and an award-winning fish and chip shop. Meanwhile, positioned just off the square, Monmouth Street and Chapel Row have an abundance of shops and business that shouldn’t be overlooked.

Walcot Street & London Road Bath’s very own artisan quarter has a broad selection of independent shops and boutiques where you can find anything from a bargain piece of furniture or classy antique to a period costume or shiny new bike. Two really vibrant areas of the city, Walcot Street and London Road both have an eclectic mix of old and new and should be your first stop in the city if you’re looking for a truly unique present.

Also Try… Don’t forget to explore the lanes around the Royal Cresent and have a browse through the fabulous antique shops and galleries. Just outside the city centre, Widcombe also has some great ideas for quirky presents and bespoke home ware items as well as also boasting some great places to grab a drink and a bite to eat, away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.

CHRISTMAS IN BATH

Bath Christmas Market Bath Christmas Market is the biggest and most beautiful Christmas Shopping event in the South West. Quite rightly, the main attraction of this sparkling event is the shopping, and with over 130 stalls offering a tantalising array of gifts and Christmas essentials, it’s the perfect place to get your Christmas shopping well underway. Located in the heart of the city’s thriving shopping centre, alongside popular high street names and designer brands, the Christmas Market’s unique, and locally handmade products offer a bit of added festive sparkle to an already wonderful Christmas shopping destination. Visitors to the market can get well underway with crossing off their gift lists – with stalls selling toys, crafts, clothing, accessories, homeware and jewellery – they’ll be spoilt for choice, with lots of ideas for even the hardest to buy for family or friends. The market’s food stalls are really tempting – visitors can sample cheeses, pickles, sausages and more – a taster of the imminent festivities. Tasters of liqueurs, wines and local ciders are available, and

there is plenty of opportunity to stock up on spices, chocolates and puddings – all essential luxuries at this time of year.

• 10 megapixels • 2.5” LCD screen • 3x optical zoom

Don’t forget to take time out to enjoy the festivities – the enchanting sound of carols and the tantalising aroma of roasting nuts and spices are the perfect inspiration when choosing those perfect gifts. Take a stroll through the city centre and you will find even more than you expect – with new stalls by the Carousel and more at Milsom Place in Milsom Street, you may find that you struggle to see everything you want to in the time you have. Don’t worry, though - with the event now running for 18 days, to the 9th December, you have plenty of time to come back, time and again. FASHION

Ready, set, glam! Winter is an excuse to revamp your wardrobe with warm fluffy coats, chunky boots and essential accessories. The shops are now fully stocked with their winter threads so we’ve been out to see what’s hot this season. In 2013 the return of close fitting three-quarter length coats will be perfect for both formal occasions as well as the more casual outings you’ve got planned for the New Year. Dark blues, speckled greys and of course classic black are all trending on the catwalk as are warmer, richer shades such as red, gold, orange and green. Playful variations on the classic faux-fur coat designs has resulted in multi-coloured jackets making a surprise appearance in many collections, often enhanced by simple stripe or polka dot patterns. You will also notice coats without a collar creeping into the shop windows; certainly a classy look but one that will require a wraparound scarf if the temperatures drop. While decorative, flimsy scarves may look the part, chunky, fur-lined and over-sized scarves

combine style with warmth. ‘Never Ending’ scarves are particularly warm and highly adaptable as they can be worn loose over a jumper, tucked into a coat or draped over the head as a make-shift hood. In terms of head-wear fluffy trapper hats (pictured below) are proving popular with the fellers, but for the women the oversized, slouch design will not only look great but is less likely to interfere with your hair on a night out. If you’ve got any swanky parties lined up then short-sleeved dresses complemented with a fitted cardigan or jacket are preferred to dresses with a long sleeve, while chunky wedges replace the thinner stilettos that have proved popular throughout 2012. However, if you’re just popping to the shops then either jeans or patterned tights with a plain skirt will work well with knee high flat boots.

And for the men...

Kick off the New Year with a smart new look that incorporates military jackets, lace-up boots and plaid shirts The thin canvas slip-on shoes of summer will need to be replaced with something a little sturdier now that the cold is setting in, so it’s hardly surprising that sleek leather lace-ups are already making their way into the shops, as are the chunkier boots which proved popular this time last year. Military fashion is once again a hit this season with the high streets already stocking up on chunky buttoned coats falling to the knee, fitted jackets tailored to the waist and military-style shirts and blazers. Indeed, blazers will feature heavily for 2013, from the aforementioned military cut to the more relaxed traditional fitting jackets. For something a little different why not invest in a tweed number and offset it with a thick chequered shirt, perfect for the cold weekend evenings.

DIY CHRISTMAS

Christmas is what you make of it! Give your door a makeover with a bespoke Christmas wreath; they’re simple to make and can be customized to fit in with the rest of your home’s décor.

Making a wreath

1. Bend a coat hanger into a rough circular shape and either leave the hook attached for easy hanging or snip it off.

2. Get an old newspaper and crumple a couple of double pages into sausage shapes, then wrap them around your circle. Secure with sticky tape.

3. Start adorning your wreath base with your chosen materials and if you’ve left the hook on, glue some ribbon around it for a decorative finish.

Floral and Frosty

Glitter ‘n’ Glitz

Traditional

For a traditional looking wreath stick to a green, red and gold colour scheme. Using lightweight floral wire or hot glue attach pinecones, baubles and greenery to the wreath base and finish off with a big red bow.

If you’re having a swanky get together this Christmas then a classy gold wreath will fit the bill. Lines of decorative beads and shimmering ribbons are easy to wrap around your wreath base and will look neater than if stuck on individually.

Berry Christmas

Thread a piece of cotton or cloth covered floral stem wire through an assortment of plastic fruit and wrap around your wreath base. Try colour co-ordinating your fruits and build up a collection of vibrant wreaths to be hung on the bedroom doors.

Take apart a fake festive flower arrangement and attach to your wreath base. Leaves with a shimmery frost effect, mistletoe and pinecones will look great when offset by plastic fruit painted silver, and wiry branches.

Crafty Christmas Christmas is a time for giving and there’s no better way to teach your child this valuable lesson than to have them make their very own Christmas card, which they can then give to their friends and family.

landscape which can be adorned with stencils and cut out shapes. The traditional Christmas shapes such as Christmas trees, candles, snowmen and candy canes are easy for the kids to follow with the scissors.

All you’ll need to create a basic card is a range of coloured paper and card, glue and a pair of scissors. Thereafter you can get adventurous with some colourful cuttings of fabric, small beads and rhinestones, ribbons, translucent papers and anything else that you think might work with your design.

For their festive greeting why not get them to cut out letters from a piece of patterned fabric and glue it to the top of the card. This will add some texture to their masterpiece and is a great way to cover up any mistakes that may have crept in.

Once you’re all kitted out, keep any small objects such as beads out of reach of younger children, but otherwise let them enjoy the creative process and make the card that they want to make.

If you are making your own envelope to accompany the card then remember that it needs to be slightly larger than the card itself, so for instance a 170mm square envelope would hold a

RESTAURANTS Coffee Break

Christmas Dinner

If you just need a pit stop from your Christmas shopping then pop into one of Bath’s many coffee shops or cafes for a cuppa and a slice of cake. There is a fabulous mix of independents in the city all unique in their own right and perfect for sitting down and watching the world go by.

Everyone enjoys a feast on Christmas Day but the responsibility of preparing it is not always as welcome. Why not forget about all the preparation this year and book a table somewhere that everyone can enjoy together. Bath has plenty of pubs and restaurants available for bookings on Christmas Day and Boxing Day and there’s a diverse range of menus out there too.

Feeling Hungry? With so much going on at this time of year there’s always an excuse for a quick drink or a bite to eat. Fortunately in Bath there’s a diverse mix of restaurants, cafes and bars to choose from so you shouldn’t have any trouble finding the right environment for your outing.

Office Meal If you’ve been tasked with choosing the venue for your office meal start looking now as places will be getting booked up far in advance. Ensure that the venue knows the nature of your party as well as the exact number of guests attending so that they can make the necessary preparations. As well as confirming any specific dietary requirements you should also gauge a rough budget that your colleagues will be willing to pay for their meal; this will help narrow down your choices.

Friendly Catch-up

Romantic Supper

It’s not all turkey and stuffing at Christmas; with countless types of cuisine available there’s something for every occasion so if you’re planning on a grabbing a bite to eat with friends try something new. Indian, Thai, Italian, Chinese or Mexican, the list is endless.

If you’re treating your other half to a special evening then choose somewhere with a relaxing atmosphere and mood lighting. If you’re going the extra mile and splashing out on their favourite bottle of wine make sure you’ve checked the menu before booking so you’re sure they’ll find what they want.

RETRO CHRISTMAS

Vintage Christmas. Vintage and retro style gifts have become increasingly popular in the last couple of years but if you’re clever you can find some truly unique items without the designer price tags. Here in Bath there are plenty of independent shops and boutiques with reasonably priced vintage items for sale, it’s just a matter of finding them.

Bath are a haven for old knickknacks and quirky pieces and there’s plenty of great vintage clothing shops around too with outfits from the 30s right through to the present day.

Take a stroll up Walcot Street and you’re sure to find something weird and wonderful whether it’s a unique gift in its own right or something you can use as part of a homemade present.

If you hunt hard enough you could pick up an authentic sailor’s hat or a military jacket; perfect for any fancy dress parties you might be attending come New Year’s Eve. To really get into the vintage spirit pick up some classic Christmas items such as a wooden sleigh, some cosy knitwear or a traditional stocking for the fireplace.

While on Walcot Street keep an eye out for Father Christmas who has been given a new and exciting image for 2012 by Bath Aqua Glass. He’ll be wondering around Bath and various Christmas markets across the country proudly showing of his brand new Aqua Blue suit.

Buying vintage this Christmas could not only save you money but it will show that you’ve put real effort into your shopping, so get rummaging before someone else snaps up that one-off item you’ve got in mind.

The general public are welcome to have their photos taken with him for a small donation to a chosen charity. But it’s not just Walcot Street that’s going vintage this Christmas; the stalls throughout

New Home at Christmas?

If this is your first Christmas in a new home then make this year extra special by transforming it into a cosy winter wonderland for you and the family. Sort through your decorations and get rid of anything that’s looking a little outdated or has suffered a lot of wear-and-tear over the years. If you decide that there’s nothing salvageable then start from scratch, choose three or four colour schemes to use in your house and get shopping. The main reception rooms in your home; the dining room, living room and lounge can either be colour co-ordinated or given separate colour schemes depending on the layout of your home. If your house is open plan then keeping your decorations consistent throughout will work best but otherwise have fun with

mixing and matching colours in each room. For instance, try out a frosty theme in one room, with light blues, shimmering silver and snowy white, and accent your decorations with fairy lights. If you have a banister leading to the upper floors then weave tinsel in and out of the vertical newel posts and place a personalised wreath on each of the bedrooms doors. Mood lighting is perfect for this time of year so fire up the fireplace and dot some scented candles around the home; cinnamon and cloves is a popular choice for the season.

As well as the traditional wreaths, beads and tinsel decorations you can also invest in some festive cushions and throws which will make your new lounge more homey and comfortable when you nestle up with a favourite Christmas film. Once you’re happy with the interior move outside and tidy up the garden, place a small potted Christmas tree at the front door and adorn with twinkling lights. Your new home will be inviting from the outside and comfortable and relaxing on the inside – perfect for any guests you have staying over this year.

EVENTS

What’s happening inBath?

Bath comes alive at Christmas and with so much going on in and around the city you’ll be spoilt for choice. We’ve selected some of the highlights from the Christmas calendar.

Bath Christmas Market 22 November – 9 December The centrepiece of Bath at Christmas is the picturesque Bath Christmas Market – the biggest and most beautiful Christmas Market in the south west, which magically transforms the square and streets surrounding Bath Abbey and the famous Roman Baths into a Christmas shopper’s haven. The 18 day market is a real treasure trove with over 140 traditional wooden chalets, each offering locally made, handcrafted and unusual gifts, decorations and food items. This year, the market is spreading its festive joy, with additional stalls in Milsom Place, Milsom Street, and in Bath Street next to a Victorian carousel, in the heart of the city’s thriving shopping centre. www.bathchristmasmarket.co.uk

Thermae Bath Spa Take a break from checking off all those tricky presents and take a moment for calm and relaxation before the frantic festive season kicks in. Bath is proud to boast the only UK spa with naturally heated thermal waters. Relax under the stars in their rooftop pool after a day pounding the pavements, and sooth your weary body in the warm water as the steam rises over the twinkling cityscape – a great Christmas treat to yourself and the perfect way to prepare for the upcoming celebrations. www.thermaebathspa.co.uk

New to Bath this Christmas, this open air, real ice rink is located in Victoria Park, within easy walking distance of the Christmas market and the city’s main shopping areas. It’s a wonderful addition to the city’s winter festivities – so why not send the children off with Dad or Granny and Grandpa to enjoy a skate while you get down to some serious Christmas shopping? www.bathonice.co.uk
