THIs BATH HAS IT ALL MAPPED week OUT ... at W Julia Gash, head designer founder of British to w e r s and eco-ethical brand

Here’s what our team has found (and loved!) this week...

The prestigious Bath Society of Artists Summer Open exhibition launched at the weekend at Victoria Art Gallery on Bridge Street. Now in its 111th year, the popular exhibition showcases the best of the region’s artistic talent and attracts over 13 thousand visitors. Open until June 4 (www.victoriagal. org.uk)

The Vale House Kitchen cookery school in Timsbury, Bath has released its new timetable of events for spring summer. Expect cookery, foraging, shooting, butchery and fly fishing courses taught by high-calibre tutors such as Tim Maddams (former River Cottage chef ) and Chris Westgate (an experienced forager who supplies The Ethicurean & Pig Hotel). valehousekitchen.co.uk

The English premiere of Piaf! The Show – which has already taken Europe by storm – will be staged in Bath during the Bath Music Festival in May. The show, starring Anne Carrere, has toured the world with a superb four-piece band. Charles Dumont, the composer of Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien, Mon Dieu and dozens of Edith Piaf ’s songs, said that it is “the best show ever made about the life of Edith Piaf ”.

Talented, has created a unique and striking illustration of Bath which have been printed onto tote bags. Julia’s creation, which includes sketches of iconic heritage buildings and landmarks such as Pulteney Bridge, the Roman Baths and the Royal Crescent, used signature colours of red, blue and black further infuse the Bath design with a sense of patriotic pride and passion. Julia’s Bath Cityscape captures the imagination of tourists and students who fall in love with the city and natives who are naturally proud of their hometown. Under £15, KC Change on Abbey Street

ice ’n’ easy Chippenham-based Marshfield Farm Ice Cream has a brand new look and has extended its range (yay!) The packaging now has a beautifully contemporary design and identity which will be rolled out across its portfolio of 30 different ice cream and sorbet flavours - from the tropical tasting Mango Madness to the award-winning Salted Caramel. Every flavour of Marshfield Farm ice cream is produced using fresh, organic milk from their own herd of 250 Friesian cows, milked just meters away from the ice creamery and only natural ingredients are used across the entire range, which are locally sourced wherever possible. “We are really pleased with the look and feel of the new packaging,” says Will Hawking who owns Marshfield Farm with his wife Dawn. “It has a clean, modern design and reinforces the important role of our herd in producing the ice cream. This presents a considerable opportunity for retailers as many people are taking a greater interest in authenticity, provenance and quality.”

The legendary elegance of the Indian queens, the so-called Maharani, is the inspiration for the new Thomas Sabo Maharani line – including these Milky Aqua Quartz Drops. £235, Fabulous, SouthGate

They were shoulder-grazing and mismatched on the new season catwalks at the likes of Celine and JW Anderson, but any length of drop-earrings are hot for spring summer ’16. We love this style of earring in the Limpet Shell shade – one of the 10 hues in Pantone’s semi-annual colour report for the fashion industry, which is compiled by a group of colour experts around the world.

Good golly Miss Holly!

She’s gone from Inbetweeners siren to Dad’s Army blonde bombshell, and now Emily Atack is making her stage debut starring as Holy Golightly in the UK tour of Breakfast at Tiffany’s. She tells Lisa Evans about how having a deep shy streak has affected her life, what it was like working with national treasures Catherine Zeta-Jones, Bill Nighy and Michael Gambon, and how she feels about taking on a role that Audrey Hepburn made so iconic.

W

hen I sit down to talk with effervescent, bubbly actress Emily Atack, the last thing I expect her to say is that she’s shy, but The Inbetweeners star who has just appeared as a home-front blonde bombshell in the cinematic reboot of Dad’s Army, admits that she has always been an extremely self-conscious person. “I have a very deep shy streak, but I think I’m able to mask it quite well,â€? she says. “I’ve always been self-conscious and worried whether people liked me or not. I’m not sure where it stemmed from, but I still have nerves when I’m in front of crowds – but good nerves, it’s more like adrenaline now.â€? Despite this surprising admission of introversion, Emily has always known - even in childhood that she wanted to ‘feel the fear’ and perform for a living. “I used to sign autographs when I was in play group,â€? laughs the actress. “I would make the other kids play make-believe that I was the celebrity and they were the fans. I was such a nightmare.â€? Performing is in Emily’s DNA; her mother is the actress, singer and comedian Kate Robbins, and her father, Keith Atack, had hits with his band Child in the ‘70s and went on to become Bonnie Tyler’s guitarist. She shines on screen, but Emily blames her nerves for never having treaded the theatrical boards before. Taking a leap of faith into the unknown, the actress is about to embark on her stage debut in the starring role of Holly Golightly (the character made famous by Audrey Hepburn) in the musical adaptation of the movie classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Âł, KDG WR EXLOG XS P\ FRQÂżGHQFH WR JHW WR WKLV point where I got on stage,â€? says Emily who’ll be touring the UK with the production. “For me, it’s all about gaining experience. had a plan, I just roll with whatever feels right at the time, and this role feels like a fantastic opportunity for me.â€? My family will be coming to the city to see me perform too, so it’s a great excuse for a nice family gathering in Bath.â€? The opportunity to star in the play came about when Emmerdale’s Verity Rushworth, who was previously sharing the role of Holly Golightly with multi award-winning singer Pixie Lott, stepped down from the production after announcing that she’s pregnant. d to be “My agent called and said that Verity had recast,â€? says Emily who will be playing the lead role in May and June before Pixie steps in to lighted star as Holly in the West End. “I was delighted to be offered the part and I just clicked with rical the role immediately and loved the theatrical atmosphere.â€? Jeremy’s joy Stand-up comedian and Radio 4 regular Jeremy Hardy has just hit the road to tour the country. Ahead of his date at Komedia Bath next week, we sat down with him to talk lottery wins, Britishness and his dislike of anything remotely cheery

W

ith more than three decades of stand-up performances under his belt, Jeremy Hardy reckons that, without a lottery win, he has another three decades ahead of him. Not that he minds. Which is good news, as he’s just embarked on a major nationwide tour. The comedian, whose show, Jeremy Hardy Speaks to the Nation, has run for 10 series on Radio 4, makes for entertaining and acerbic company when we meet with him ahead of his stop-off at Komedia Bath next week. “Audiences don’t have to laugh – they just have to turn up and pay, says Jeremy with an appealingly downbeat attitude. “I’m not demanding money from them on Just Giving so I can take a two-week holiday to Barbados in aid of Indigestion Awareness. I just want them to come to the show. Let’s face it, what else are they going to do that night? “[I don’t have time] for this awful vogue for false cheeriness in comedians, adds Jeremy, hitting his miserablist stride now. “That’s all a bit CBeebies. I don’t go with this perkiness that’s around at the moment. I appeal to people’s chipper sense of resignation and stoical determination to keep going. I should have been around in the Second World War. I was born after my time. For all his grumbling, though, Jeremy still loves stand-up. He proceeds to explain what he enjoys so much about performing live. “I really like the fact that it’s not edited or recorded, he says. “It can’t be turned into anything else. I don’t want to produce DVDs. I like the fact that my live stuff is there and then it’s gone, to be forever misquoted by the people who were there. I also love the fact that it can never be repeated. Each night is a unique experience, a complete one-off. The comedian, who is also a regular on The News Quiz and I’m Sorry I Haven’t a Clue on Radio 4 – appearances that led Alan Bennett to remark recently that he likes Jeremy – also relishes the fact that his act is never set in stone. “The great thing about doing a live show is that it keeps evolving, says Jeremy. “I keep changing and developing it. It won’t be the same at the end of the tour as it was at the beginning. Stand-up is not like other art-forms. When you’ve done a painting and sold it to someone, you can’t keep going round to their house and adding bits. That

would be a bit strange. It would also be burglary, not to say criminal damage.â€? So what might we expect from his new show which he’ll be bringing to Bath on May 6? “I talk about class, race, identity, Britishness, food, death and health,â€? he reveals. “There are only seven or eight things I ever talk about!â€? One thing you can be absolutely sure of is that Jeremy will be discussing politics. The subject is as vital to him as breathing. “It would be very hard for me to do a set without mentioning anything about the news,â€? says the comedian. “But I feel it’s not forced coming from me. Politics is part of who I am. “I actually think it’s weird for comedians not to be political. I think, ‘Why are you standing on stage and not talking about what’s happening in the world?’ When comedians do stuff about their Ă€DWPDWH RU IRRWEDOO RU WKHLU PXP DQG GDG LWÂśV ÂżQH But I think increasingly audiences think, ‘Why are you talking about that?’ “My material always has to be entertaining – and appropriate,â€? he adds. “I don’t want to be shrill or belittle serious things by doing jokes about them. When horrible things happen, I’m not going to feed off them like a carrion crow. I don’t want to see the world as fodder for my comedy.â€? He would also hate his act to be seen as didactic. “Of course, I hope the show resonates and that people think about things in the coming days,â€? he says. “But I don’t want people to bring along a

24

notebook so they can jot down the salient points. I want them to be entertained! Âł$ ORW RI WKH WKLQJV WKDW , ÂżQG IXQQ\ DUH QRW political,â€? he adds. “People imagine I spend my evenings reading huge treatises about the economy, but actually I love Morecambe and Wise.â€? For all that, the comedian will not be ignoring one area of current affairs that has been grabbing the headlines lately: migration. “There has been this ridiculous idea that you can freeze the demographics of this country – ‘yes, that’s exactly the mixture we’ve always wanted,â€? he says. “That’s it. It’s now going to stay like that forever’. “People say it’s a small country, but I travel a lot and it’s clearly not. If you’re trying to get from one side of Britain to the other on a Sunday, it’s absolutely enormous. Everywhere you look, there are empty spaces and dilapidated buildings. What’s interesting is that there has been this huge change in people’s attitude to migration recently, which I hope will be ongoing. I’m hoping things will be more positive now.â€? Finally, we can’t part without discussing the election of Jeremy’s old friend, Jeremy Corbyn, as the new Labour leader. The comedian echoes the surprise – and delight – felt by many about Corbyn’s sudden rise. “I’ve known Jeremy for 25 years and never for a second did I imagine that he would become leader of the Labour Party – the very idea would have been dismissed as nonsense,â€? he says. “But now it’s happened, there are a lot of jubilant people around. Even some non-Labour people seem pleased because Jeremy is clearly someone who means what he says and isn’t well-drilled in the art of self-preservation. +HÂśV EHFRPH D YHU\ SRSXODU ÂżJXUH , WKLQN ZHÂśUH LQ for a jolly time. Of course, there was an enormous backlash against him in the media. But I hope people will just accept that he’s leader now and not try to derail him. Âł7KLV LV WKH ÂżUVW WLPH ,ÂśYH IHOW VR SRVLWLYH DERXW anything in a long time,â€? he adds, unable to resist one last gag. “It could be a bloody nightmare for satirists, though. I’ll have to re-train.â€? So what would he re-train as? “I’ll have to lecture on Comedy at the University of Mirth.â€? See Jeremy Hardy at Komedia Bath on May 6. For tickets visit www.komedia.co.uk

Audiences don’t have to laugh – they just have to turn up and pay... I just want them to come to the show. Let’s face it, what else are they going to do that night?

Alison Heather Sutton is a Transformational Life Coach, working in Bath. She aims to help people understand how life works and how to get more out of it; to feel secure and at peace; and to discover how joyful life is when our thoughts are not taken too seriously. She once believed the source of her wellbeing came from her next Gucci handbag. She now specialises in helping people see through similar myths and to notice that they already have innate mental and emotional wellbeing, they just think they don’t.

ARE YOU RECEIVING ME?

I

used to be one of those people that when I was offered help I would VD\ QR HYHQ LI , UHDOO\ QHHGHG LW and as for asking for it – that would never happen. Somehow there was this sense of pride that meant if I accepted help then I was not coping. I’d always felt that I ought to be able to do things for myself, and, if I couldn’t, that meant I was weak in some way. All the feelings of uncertainty – fear, shame and worry about whether I can trust another not to think badly of me – would come up.

And in that moment I wasn’t allowing someone else to give and myself to receive. And, more to the point, I wasn’t allowing my vulnerability to be seen. For many years I confused vulnerability with weakness and maintained a mask of strength when really inside I wanted someone to tell me to go sit down while WKH\ Âż[HG ÂłLW´ ZKDWHYHU ÂłLW´ ZDV DW the time. Most people love to help, for some it is a way of showing love and building trust. you knew that not accepting an offer of help was keeping people at arm’s length in your attempt to protect yourself would you still say no? Dr Brown’s research states that we try to ward off feelings of disappointment with a shield of cynicism, disarm shame by numbing ourselves against joy, and circumvent grief by shutting off our willingness to love. SPRING CLEANING

S

with Zita Alves

o exciting to see the buds on the trees really starting to burst out now the days are longer. Many of you may have already started to spring clean your homes but have you considered doing the same to your body? Juicing is a popular way to give your system a real cleanse and help it with a superboost of nutrients that it can absorb into the cells to energise you. Be sure to focus on vegetable juices maybe with the odd piece of fruit in otherwise they may contain too much sugar. Beetroot, carrot, apple and ginger is a great choice, or if you want something lighter how about cucumber, celery, pear and lime? If you haven’t yet been to Beyond The Kale in Green Park you should pop by for one of their tasty juices. Also, a great way to help a sluggish lympahtic system is to skin-brush daily, ideally before you have a shower or Bath. Always use long strokes and work towards your heart. Exercise is of course a fantastic way to clean the body and most often the mind too. The skin is our largest organ, so sweating out impurities is key to keeping us healthy.

Juice boost I made this super simple sugar-free “lemonadeâ€? recently (purely because I bought a lovely Spanish lemon so thought I’d see what happened if I put it in my blender. I peeled some of the skin off and added water and ice cubes. Luckily it turned out pretty well – super refreshing and very alkalising on the body which is great to ďŹ ght disease which thrives in an acidic body.

Work out of the week: Burpees! If you want to elevate your heart rate and get the blood pumping quickly then the burpee will do it and with a few variations we can make it suitable for anyone no matter what your ďŹ tness level. The regular version is four- part movement: 1. Hands on the oor

2. Jump the feet out behind you into a plank type position 3. Jump the feet back in with bent knees 4. Jump up and reach the hands above the head You can make it more challenging by adding in a press up when you are in the plank position, and you can make it

easier by putting your hands on a low step, or by stepping the legs in and out (rather than jumping). Start with 10 burpees and build up to 100! Alternatively, set your timer and see how many you can do in 30 seconds, then rest for 30 seconds and then repeat several times.

If you have a medical condition or injury, consult your doctor before performing any of these exercises

Blanc canvaS You can’t walk through Queen Square, Bath, without noticing the ever so stylish Brassiere Blanc restaurant at the foot of The Francis Hotel. Here, Raymond Blanc, the chef patron of the restaurant, tells us why he thinks it’s so important to use fresh, local produce, why his hearty French cooking is so inspired by his famous ‘Maman’, and why Bath will always be a place he admires

O

n a recent trip to France to visit his elderly mother, Raymond Blanc was woken by a noise in the garden. “It was 6am, I opened the shutters and who did I see? Maman Blanc,â€? the chef recalls. “That little woman had already hoed about 10 square metres of earth, and she was going fast. I said: ‘Maman, can you stop? You’ll break your back!’ My sons call her Mother Teresa on speed,â€? adds the father-of-two, who grew up in Besançon in eastern France. “She’s still working 10 times faster than me.â€? Raymond’s father was also a keen gardener, and while his school friends were playing football, Raymond and his four siblings would be digging soil and harvesting food for his mother to cook, bottle or pickle to store for the cold winter months. “It gave me an understanding of seasonality, of heritage,â€? says Raymond. “For me, it was the strongest part of my philosophy, and it still is today.â€? His culinary big break came when, after moving to England in 1972 to work as a waiter, the eatery’s chef fell ill, and he ended up being required to take over in the kitchen. By 1984, the two-Michelin starred chef had opened hotel and restaurant Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire. FRENCH ONION SOUP

Method: Preheat the oven to 170C/Gas 3.5. Line two 900g loaf tins with baking parchment, leaving an overhang of paper. In a food mixer on a medium speed, whisk together the sugar, eggs, marzipan and vanilla puree for four minutes. Continue mixing and pour in the sunflower oil in a steady stream. Mix together the flour, bicarbonate of soda, baking powder, salt and spices and sift. Fold into the wet mixture. Fold in the sultanas and carrot, then pour the mixture into your lined tins. Bake for 45 minutes. Remove the cakes from the oven, take them out of the moulds and leave to cool on a cooling rack. To make the icing, briskly beat the cream cheese, butter and icing sugar together. Once the cakes are completely cool, use a palette knife to spread the icing on top of each loaf and finish by scattering over a few whole toasted pecan nuts or walnuts.

Serves 4-6 people Ingredients: For the soup: 2tbsp plain flour 60g unsalted butter 1kg Rose de Roscoff onions or white onions, cut into 3mm slices 2tsp sea salt 2 pinches freshly ground black pepper 200ml dry white wine, boiled for 30 seconds 1.5L cold water (or brown chicken stock, if you prefer a richer soup) 1tsp caster sugar (optional) For the croutons: 12 x 1cm-slices of baguette 150g Comté cheese (ideally two-yearold), grated Method: Preheat the oven to 170C/Gas 3.5. For the soup, put the flour into a baking tin and toast in the oven for 30 minutes. On a high heat, in saucepan, melt the butter. Add the onions and soften for five minutes, stirring frequently. Season. Continue cooking for 20-30 minutes to achieve an even, rich brown colour. Stir in the toasted flour, gradually stir in the white wine, and one-third of the cold water and whisk to prevent lumps forming. Bring to the boil, add the remaining water and simmer for five minutes. Taste and correct the seasoning, adding the sugar if required. To make the croutons, heat your grill on a high setting. Arrange the baguette slices on a baking tray and toast on one side until lightly golden. To serve, divide the soup between serving bowls, top with croutons, toasted side up, and sprinkle over the grated Comté.

MONO MADNESS

Just as we shake up our wardrobe at this time of year, following the same approach indoors can brighten our homes. We speak with Kay Hutcheson – head of buying at House of Bath – about how best to brush off winter chills and add instant cheer to rooms so they’re smart for spring. Antique cut crystal vases, £24, Article Bath, Bartlett Street

Maximise the light in a room by painting everything white and grabbing some white furniture which will make a space feel fresh and airy. Don’t fear black accents either: monochrome works brilliantly all year round. If you’re not crazy about the harshness of the hues, opt for a softer cream to take the edge off.

WORK: I’m the co-founder of Spotty Herberts, a shop which sells local brand unisex clothes for children aged 0-10. I’m thoroughly enjoying being a shopgirl, learning every day. We enjoy sourcing products for the shop – discovering new suppliers, makers and designers. As our wish list grows longer we are understanding quantities and timings and, most importantly, recognising pieces that will work well for our customers in Bath. BATH: :KHQ , ¿UVW FDPH WR %DWK IRU DQ interview for my degree course, I knew I would stay, it felt like home already. After years of coming and going and living abroad it’s good to be back. PLAY: Our families live many miles away, so whenever we’re not working we nip off for a weekend to catch up with everyone. My husband’s family are in South Wales and we often combine a visit with a trip down Gower for Welsh cakes and hot chocolate on the beach. Friends: They’d describe me as honest, strong and kind (I asked them!) heroes: I admire: Mary Portas, a lovely lady and a retail guru; Paul Smith for his beautiful shop interiors and his love of Mail Art; and Robert Rauschenberg, forever inspirational. LOVES: I love my husband for working hard for our family and cooking amazing roast chicken; and our two children for being “spotty Herberts” and of course my folks for doing such a great job! HATES: Thoughtless service and bad manners. WEAKNESSES: I’m self-critical and
