_lsjvtl It feels like ages ago that the Christmas lights were switched on, but finally Christmas is almost here. It’s easy to get so caught up in trying to create the perfect Christmas Day, that sometimes we forget to take the time to sit back and relax and enjoy the holiday. For many of us, the Christmas break might only be a couple of days, so it’s important to really make the most of it. Of course we want to get presents that our loved ones will love, and enjoy a delicious dinner, but all the preparations shouldn’t be at the expense of spending quality time with

EDITORIAL Lynne Fernquest friends and family. After all, isn’t that what Christmas really should be about? This is the final Weekend magazine of 2013, and is a special bumper issue containing two week’s worth of television listings, so make sure you don’t put it out with the recycling until after the new year! I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, and a very Happy New Year.

Happy healthy holidays

Zita Alves from Zest Bootcamp offers ten top tips to survive the festive season without piling on pounds Christmas time means mulled wine, mince pies, chocolate and days spent up on the sofa watching movies, which can play havoc with the waistline. But as Zita Alves, from Zest Bootcamp in Bath, explains you don’t go completely off the rails and undo all the hard work you’ve done this year. Zita says: “Christmas is a time when people often go way overboard with their eating habits, chocolate for breakfast, lunch and dinner,. and these bad habits make us lethargic and can set us back months in our fitness goals. “These are just a few handy tips that can help keep you on the straight and narrow.”

Hell in high heels A party outfit is rarely complete without a gorgeous pair of high heels. But although our favourite footwear might look stunning, regular tottering around in six-inch heels could be causing you more damage than you realise. Matt Shepherd from Physio Impulse in Bath has put together a guide to the five most common high-heel related afflictions and five top tips to manage them. He said: “These tips should help overcome those day-to-day niggles, but should symptoms persist it is always advisable to seek the help of a Chartered Physiotherapist to fully assess your problem. In clinic, we find that excessive use of heels can lead to some pretty debilitating issues, but as with most things in life, moderation is the key. Varying shoes from flats to heels and maintaining a regular stretching and strengthening routine will ensure that you can enjoy your Christmas party, while towering over your male colleagues!”

Chalet retreat extends city stay until 2014

A

pop-up bar and restaurant in the centre of Bath has proved such a success that it is extending its stay. The Après-Ski Bar at the Abbey Hotel was originally going to be open for the duration of the Christmas market, but it has been such a hit that the Alpine chalet will now be open until January 1. As well as mulled wine and festive cocktails, the bar also serves warming winter dishes and homemade cakes. and treats like Stollen and cinnamon buns, to revive weary shoppers. The culinary brains behind the outfit are local catering firm Barker and Green, run by Katie Barker and Judith Green, who are based in Ammerdown near Radstock. Proprietor of the Abbey Hotel, Ian Taylor, said: “I came across Barker &

Green at a party. They were catering, and I loved the food. “When we were planning the Après-Ski Bar I knew we couldn’t do it all in the hotel and I thought Judith and Katie would be perfect for the job.” Both Judith and Katie are experienced cooks. Previously Judith worked with a sporting agency, which saw her travelling around the world catering in many unusual locations, while Katie has lived and worked in ski resorts making her perfectly placed to devise authentic après-ski style menus. Every day the pair cook up hearty stews and soups to be served during the day, and Judith said: “We really wanted the food to match the style of the chalet. “When we were first told about the chalet I couldn’t really picture what it would look like. I thought it might have

more of a functional feel, but it doesn’t at all. “Party planners You are So invited have done a wonderful job and created a brilliant atmosphere. “So far people seem to be really enjoying it and we have had lovely feedback. “Katie has a real feel for this style of food which is very helpful.” All the food is freshly made, and while

the stews and soups are made at the company’s base, many of the cakes are baked in the chalet. “I am used to working in tiny galley kitchens,” said Judith. “So I can bake in here quite happily. “We are making more and more from scratch in the chalet and the wonderful smells come through and fill it, which is really lovely.”

Elegant festive canapés Whether you are looking for posh finger food for an elegant soirée, or a pre-dinner nibble on Christmas Day, this canapé recipe, created by Paul Merrett for Cono Sur Vineyards and Winery, is sure to wow your guests. It may look technical but is actually extremely simple to put together and tastes amazing. The honeycomb may seem a little ‘scientific’ but it can be done well in advance of the big day. You could buy the honeycomb of course, but if you give it a go you can spend the whole party bragging about your molecular gastronomic talents! This recipe will make more than you need, so dip the remainder in melted dark chocolate for an extra treat. Makes at least 20 canapés: ’ – ’ –

22 THE WEEKEND

Honeycomb

To make the honeycomb: ■ Place the sugar, glucose, honey and the water into a large saucepan – this is important because your honeycomb will puff up and swell as it cooks. ■ Place a sugar thermometer into the pan and slowly bring the contents of the pan to 150 degrees. ■ Turn the heat off and add the bicarbonate of soda and whisk briefly just until the mixture begins to puff up – it will start to look like honeycomb at this stage. It will quadruple in size. ■ Tip the very hot mixture very gently and carefully onto a tray lined with silicon paper and leave to cool. ■ Store the honeycomb in an airtight container in a cool dry place until

www.bathchronicle.co.uk

required. To assemble the canapé ■ Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick frying pan and gently fry the granary bread discs so that they are golden brown and lightly crunchy ■ Dice the cold, cooked beetroot – about ½ cm cubes ■ Spoon a generous dollop of goats curd onto each disc so that it covers about 2/3 of the disc ■ Place a small dollop of the diced beetroot on top of the goat’s curd ■ Smash some honeycomb to the size of coarse breadcrumbs and sprinkle over the canapés ■ Drizzle over some honey and serve Wine match

kh z v|{ The Walk From the old heart of Winsley, this week’s walk drops downhill via Turleigh to Avoncliff. There are fine views of the Avon Valley along the way, as well as the opportunity to explore Avoncliff with its handsome aqueduct and the ever-popular Cross Guns Inn. A scenic stretch of the Kennet & Avon Canal brings the walk through to Murhill, a scattered hillside settlement, before a stiff climb back uphill to quiet lanes that head out towards Conkwell Grange, a noted equestrian centre. Field paths then head back to Winsley, where the Seven Starts will provide welcome rest and refreshment. This is a lovely walk that could recharge the batteries before the onslaught of Christmas, or maybe a walk to be savoured after the big day itself to burn off some of those excess seasonal calories!

The Wiltshire Music Centre moves many steps closer to commissioning the internationally acclaimed British light artist, Bruce Munro, for the installation of an iconic piece of public art in the Centre’s foyer. Entitled Rhythm and Blues, and consisting of 360 helical fibre-optic light stems and reflecting mirrors suspended above the heads of the audience as they enter the centre, this bespoke, site-specific light sculpture will transform the entrance to the building into a sea of shimmering light, bringing extra magic to the Centre. Unlike his well-known installations for the Holburne Museum in Bath (Field of Light, 2011) and Salisbury Cathedral (Light Shower and Water-Towers, 2010 / 2011), this will be a permanent public sculpture – one of Bruce’s few

permanent pieces on display in the South West – available for the residents of Bradford on Avon, audiences and artists to enjoy, and providing a significant additional attraction for tourists and visitors to Bradford on Avon. During his visit earlier in the year, Bruce was so inspired by the building and the music that he agreed to design, create and install the foyer light sculpture at cost. And following generous donations from centre supporters and the recent receipt of a grant of £4,000 from the Bradford on Avon Area Board, Wiltshire Music Centre is that much closer to unveiling Rhythm and Blues to the public for the autumn winter 2014 concert season in September of next year.

Netball gal glamour Team Bath’s Superleague netballers took some time away from their training to glam it up for their pre-season photoshoot in the heart of Bath. The reigning Superleague champions will be aiming to make it six titles from just nine seasons when they get their campaign underway at the University of Bath Sports Training Village on January, 31. Training for the new season is already well underway and the squad – an exciting combination of youth and experience – took time away from the courts and Team Bath Gym for the glitzy photoshoot. The photoshoot took place at Milsom Place, and each player was treated to a styling from some of the top stylists from the Artizan salons in Bath. Head coach Jess Thirlby said it was a fun and rather glamorous opportunity for the team to get away from the netball courts. “It’s important for team morale to get away from the netball courts sometimes and it was great to see the team camaraderie on the day,” she said. “I’d like to thank Milsom Place for hosting us and Artizan for making the players look even better,” she added. “If we play as well as we looked we’ll be in for another good season.” For full details of Team Bath’s 2014 Superleague fixtures and information about how you can buy tickets, please go to www.teambath.com/sport/netball. Going for gold in 2014

S

o determined is Michael Jamieson to banish the memory of a painful 2013, that doctors at Bath’s Royal United Hospital were forced to restart his heart last month. The troubling episode was one the 25-year-old Scot was able to pass off as “cool” to his 46,000 Twitter followers, but there remains a fire in his belly that will burn at least until he is stood on the top step of the podium in his home city next summer. The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games present a golden opportunity for Jamieson, who is now based at the University of Bath’s national centre of excellence. He shot to the British public’s attention with a brilliant 200m breaststroke silver

medal at the London Olympics, but his hopes of bettering that achievement at this year’s World Championships were ruined by a bicep tendon injury. He eventually finished fifth in Barcelona and the scars took some time to heal. “It was just so disappointing,” Jamieson admitted. “So many athletes fall into that post-Olympic lull and I was determined that wouldn’t happen. “But I didn’t have the level of fitness to be able to challenge in Barcelona and it was taken out of my hands. “Injuries are part and parcel of sport, but it is easier to say that than accept it. “I did have a chip on my shoulder about it for a couple of weeks afterwards, but I need to use it as a

motivation. “I feel as though I have made peace with the injury now and what better incentive than the chance to end this season at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.” Jamieson will be given a taste of what to expect next July, when he competes for the Euro Allstars against Team USA in the two-day Duel in the Pool spectacular, which starts tomorrow. It will be held at the Scottish city’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre, which was reopened this year following a £14m redevelopment in readiness for the Games. “Having such home-crowd support was a big plus in London and I’m looking forward to what will be a great atmosphere,” said Jamieson.

ç

“I think Becky Adlington’s double gold in Beijing 2008 gave swimming a real spark with the public in this country and, if you look at the viewing figures for last season, it was one of the most popular homeland sports. “With there being a home Commonwealth Games this year, we really want to build on that momentum.” Jamieson was given the all-clear to compete at last weekend’s European Short-Course Championships in Denmark following his heart scare last month. It came on the back of an impressive run of medal-winning performances during the autumn’s World Cup series and as a result of “pushing a bit too hard” in the pool at the university’s Sports Training Village. He said his heart had gone into an irregular beat after reaching a rate of 203 beats per minute and later hailed staff at the RUH and English Institute of Sport as “amazing”. Jamieson insists that swimming is good for you, however, and as an ambassador for British Swimming sponsors British Gas is part of a drive to get half-a-million people to take the plunge by 2015. “There are so many benefits of being in the water rather than on land,” he said. “It’s low-impact so there are less stresses and strains on your joints, and

swimming with an improved technique can give you a real body workout. “You also see improvements really quickly if you get into it.”

Magical Moomin world premiere opens in Bath

T

his Christmas, the egg theatre presents the world premiere production of a brand-new stage adaptation of Tove Jansson’s Moominland Midwinter by acclaimed writer Hattie

Naylor. Suitable for audiences aged six years and over, the family show is running at the egg theatre until Sunday, January 12. Everyone knows that Moomins hibernate during the winter months. Throughout time, like their ancestors before them, they have slept from November to spring. But this year, Moomintroll has woken up early. While the rest of his family slumber, he decides to visit his favourite summer haunts, only to find that winter has changed everything. Determined to discover the truth about this most mysterious of seasons, Moomintroll is forced to make some very grown-up decisions when he

ventures where no Moomin has gone before. Heart-warming, humorous and spellbinding, this wondrous Christmas fantasy – co-directed by the egg theatre’s Associate Director Lee Lyford and Alison Duddle from Horse + Bamboo Theatre Company – features beautiful puppets created by Horse + Bamboo and a specially written soundtrack by Laurence Kaye. At the start of Tove Jansson’s centenary year, this will be the first time ever that The Moomins have been brought to life on stage in the UK. Tove Jansson’s Moomin stories are loved all over the world, crossing barriers of language, age and culture. The books have been translated into 43 different languages, animated and adapted for film and television. The enormous worldwide popularity of The Moomins has been attributed to Jansson’s ability to masterfully combine both children’s and adults’ world views, charming both audiences equally.

The role of Moomintroll is played by Seamas H Carey, who returns to the egg theatre after performing in last year’s Christmas show, Heidi A Goat’s Tale. Actor and multi-instrumentalist, Seamus has also worked with Kneehigh Theatre Company and the Eden Project. Morag Cross appears as Too-Ticky, Adam Fuller plays the roles of Squirrel and Snork Maiden, Zoe Hunter appears as Little My, the role of The Hemulen will be played by Horse + Bamboo Theatre’s master puppeteer Mark Whittaker. Bristol-based dramatist Hattie Naylor has won national and international awards for her plays. She adapted Ben Hur for an epic Main House stage production at the Theatre Royal Bath in 2010.

Her previous work at the egg theatre includes the world premiere production of The French Detective and the Blue Dog, Alice through the Looking Glass and The Nutcracker. ■ To win a family ticket for four people to watch Moominland Midwinter at the egg theatre on Tuesday, January 7 at 7pm just answer the following question: Who wrote the original Moominland Midwinter book? Put your answer on a postcard with your name and telephone number and send it to Moominland Midwinter Competition, The Bath Chronicle, Westpoint, James Street West, Bath BA1 2DA. The first correct answer out of the hat on Monday morning will get the tickets.

Seasonal Dickens drama After selling out in the Ustinov Studio in January 2013, Clive Francis returns to Bath to reprise his acclaimed performance of one of the most famous stories ever told -A Christmas Carol. One of Bath’s favourite actors, Clive Francis, reprises his RSC performance as the misanthropic Ebenezer Scrooge, just in time for Twelfth Night. This unique one-man adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic story was inspired by Dickens’ first reading and performance of A Christmas Carol on December 3, 1853 at Birmingham Town Hall. Clive Francis re-enacts this festive masterpiece with words penned by Dickens, playing every notable character in the story in a haunting, moving and brilliantly entertaining performance. ath Philharmonia is offering another great Christmas treat for children and parents this year, with another special performance of Howard Blake’s film classic The Snowman with live orchestral accompaniment. After the overwhelming response to last year’s seasonal performance of The Snowman, Bath Philharmonia is revisiting this Christmas classic on Monday, December 23 at 4pm at the Forum in Bath. The concert, lasting only an hour in total, will also include a plethora of Christmas favourites including Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, White Christmas, loads of songs, a fancy dress parade, audience participation, and a visit from Father Christmas. Music director of Bath Phil, Jason Thornton, said: “This is one of my favourite concerts of the year – it is totally

relaxed and The Forum is full of people of all ages from two to 92. “After all these years, it’s amazing to see the response to The Snowman from young and old alike. “It’s such a great way for people to experience the orchestra for the first time – I can’t wait.” The Snowman was originally a children’s picture book without words by English author Raymond Briggs, first published in 1978. The Snowman was adapted as a 26-minute animated film by Dianne Jackson for the fledgling British public-service Channel 4. It was first telecast on December 26 1982 and was an immediate success. The film story is told through pictures, action and music, scored by Howard Blake. It is wordless like the book, except for the song Walking in the Air.

r with city orchestra In addition to the orchestral score, performed in the film by the Sinfonia of London, Blake composed the music and lyrics of the song, performed by a St Paul’s Cathedral choirboy Peter Auty. The film ranks in 71st place on the 100 Greatest British Television Programmes, a year 2000 list drawn up by the British Film Institute, based on a vote by industry professionals. It was voted number 4 in UKTV Gold’s Greatest TV Christmas Moments. Bath Philharmonia is one of the leading professional orchestras in the South West. Its players are some of the finest and most experienced orchestral musicians in Britain. One of the two largest professional organisations of its type in the region, the orchestra gives 25 to 30 performances annually, with a roster of international soloists at a range of prestigious venues. Bath Phil’s artistic team is led by music

director Jason Thornton, with principal guest conductor Peter Donohoe and associate conductor Gavin Carr. Art at the Heart

Three very different exhibitions can currently be seen at the Royal United Hospital in Bath, which can be viewed for free until January 15. Participants from the four Bath Art Trails in Bath, The Widcombe Arts Trail, Newbridge Arts Trail, Larkhall Open Studio Art Trail and Bear Flat Artists Trail have come together to showcase a selection of two dimensional works in an exhibition at the Royal United Hospital Bath, as part of the Art at the Heart programme of events. The works, which include paintings, photographs and a wide variety of prints, displays the wide diversity and talent that abides in the city of Bath and that is often only on show at the art trails during the month of May. Unlike the well-known face of Bath, the Georgian buildings admired the world over, Faces explores the faces of the people who give the city life, and who keep it running; the people who live and work here. The three artists, Malcolm Ashman, Ben Hughes and R Scott Fraser observe and paint true-toform portraits of real people, as it is the people that make the city what it is today. The final show is Eurovisions: Landscapes from Bath to Portugal in which fine artists Marco Cazzulini and Mark Sands have taken inspiration from the botanical gardens in Bath, and central Portugal, successfully capturing an essence of place and time. ■ Pictured left, clockwise from top, Puppeteer, by Jessica Palmer, Amanda, by R Scott Fraser and Dovecote, by Marco Cazzulini

City author’s debut delight

If you have ever sat in one of Bath’s many cafes and seen a woman feverishly tapping away on her laptop for several hours on end, it might well have been Sarah Hilary, working on either her first or second novel. After beavering away writing novels over many years – she made her first attempt when she was just 10 years old – Sarah, 47, finally hit the jackpot with her crime novel Someone Else’s Skin which suddenly had publishers falling over themselves to get their hands on it. Eventually it went to a closed auction and now, even before the book is published in Britain in February, publishing rights have already been sold to countries all across Europe, as well as to Penguin in America. Sarah has already written her second novel featuring her police officers Detective Inspector Marnie Rome and her sidekick DS Noah Jake. “My agent said I should write the second novel before the first one comes out, or I just wouldn’t have time to do it. And she was right.” Sarah, husband David and daughter Milly had wanted to live in Bath for years. “Earlier this year everything fell into place and we finally found the place we wanted in Bath. “But I found it was just too quiet at home and I found I worked much better with the white noise of a cafe surrounding. “In a cafe environment you just have to get on with your writing.”

44 THE WEEKEND

’ When she came to live in Lower Weston earlier this year, Sarah made her second home in the Chelsea Cafe in Chelsea Road and then extended her writing activities to The Bear’s Paw at Bear Flat and Colonna & Small just off Queen Square in the city centre and many other friendly establishments. Although Someone Else’s Skin is her first novel, Sarah has been writing short stories for years, winning some of the UK’s top awards. But she found

www.bathchronicle.co.uk

that it really was just too difficult to get a book deal for short stories. So Sarah decided to turn to crime – in a literary sense. She had cut her reading teeth as a small girl on Sherlock Holmes stories, before graduating to writers like Patricia Highsmith. So, when she and friends talked of her writing a full-length book, a crime novel became a serious option. In her novel, Rome – who is a rising star in the police ranks – and her partner are sent to interview a resident in a women’s shelter but on arrival finds one of the women’s husbands lying stabbed on the floor. As Rome and Jake investigate what has happened, events begin to spiral and the violence escalates. Everyone is keeping secrets, some for survival and some, they suspect, to disguise who they really are. Split into two parts, the narrative twists in the middle as Sarah deftly plays on the characters’ and the readers’ perceptions and judgements towards domestic abuse. Sarah says she is not interested in brutal violence simply for the sake of it, although she won’t shy away from violence if it is part of the story. She is treading a well-trodden path in Bath, which seems to have become a breeding ground for top-quality crime writers. Peter Lovesey lived in Bath when he started writing and he has been joined by people like Mo Hayder, Tim Weaver and Morag Joss. Koypz{vwoly Phuzmvyk

Retirement dreaming? Wake up to the benefits of renting at ‘The Hawthorns’ FINDING a practical solution which matches the quality of your retirement living dream may be easier said than done – and renting may not automatically spring to the top of your list of possible solutions. However, increasing numbers of UK retirees are discovering what their counterparts in America and Australia found out a few years back – that renting your retirement home offers many advantages over continued property ownership. Even more are discovering how you can continue to benefit from both! Hawthorns Retirement has brought its highly successful American formula for retirement living to the UK at Eastbourne, Clevedon and Braintree. These developments, in a nutshell, offer you continued independent living, none of the worries of home ownership and total flexibility to change your lifestyle at a month’s notice should circumstances dictate. And all this is achieved by renting your retirement home at The Hawthorns.

Call 01275 790060 46 THE WEEKEND

Your monthly rental includes all your many monthly expenses including all your meals and snacks, utility bills, housekeeping, maintenance – even a free mini-bus to take you to the shops and back. If you sit down and calculate what you are spending on all those items living in your own home, the rental fees appears very reasonable indeed. As well as the financial argument, life at The Hawthorns offers the added benefits of security, companionship and the flexibility of handing in just one month’s notice of your decision to leave. Whilst many residents fund this idyllic retirement lifestyle from the proceeds of the sale of their home, many others opt to rent out their own property and fund their new-found lifestyle from the rental income, maintaining their property as part of their estate. Maybe you should wake up to the benefits of renting!

Special screening that will be out of this world

There will be a special showing of the new children’s film Moon Man based on the much-loved book by Tomi Ungerer at the Little Theatre Cinema in Bath later this month. Moon Man is the lively and offbeat animated feature , hich tells the story of the man on the moon who comes to Earth on the tail of a passing comet. Directed by Stephan Schesch and Sarah Clara Weber, the film showcases the stunning artwork of Ungerer’s original book and offers a change of pace from Disney/Pixar films. If only Moon Man knew just how much children loved him! But he’s not even remotely aware and he’s just sitting on the moon, bored stiff, in his lonely silver sphere ... One night, a shooting star appears, whizzing through outer space towards the moon. Moon Man seizes his chance, grabs the speeding comet by the tail and hitches a ride to earth. This ‘attack from outer space’ sets the alarm bells ringing in the presidential headquarters. The president himself is absolutely furious.

He has only just conquered the last speck of earth, defeated all his enemies ... And now, of all times, his dominion is being attacked by aliens from another planet. The only traces they find of the intruder are silvery footprints near the edge of the crater’s impact. While escaping the president and his soldiers, Moon Man will set off on a long journey, where he will marvel at the many wonders the earth has to offer and realise how much children love and need him. Tomi Ungerer, talking about the adaptation of his work for the big

www.bathchronicle.co.uk

screen, says of writer/director Stephan Schesch: “He gave the Moonman, my alter-ego of sorts, a new dimension. And there my thanks go as well to Cartoon Saloon, the Irish studio whose talents fructified the production. “I consider myself truly privileged for having met such creative minds who respected both my life and my work.” Moon Man will be released in selected Irish cinemas on December 27 with a UK release the next day. through Picturehouse cinemas when it plays in Bath. All the participating cinemas will be screening Moon Man with special themed activities alongside the film.
