Night of the Shorts A showcase event for the MA in Scriptwriting course at Bath Spa University. “Being a writer is a very peculiar sort of a job: it’s always you versus a blank sheet of paper (or a blank screen) and quite often the blank piece of paper wins.” Neil Gaiman MA Scriptwriting students are exposing their sea legs for a night of short film, theatre and radio. Come along to see a wide range of new work created by this group of writers before they cast off on their writing careers. FREE: BOOKING REQUIRED

Jazz Night: Tom Millar The quartet plays Tom’s original music, inspired by places and people that are important to him. Alex Munk’s soaring guitar sound complements Tom’s piano playing perfectly, and both are able to stretch out over the rhythm section’s emphatic grooves. Formed while studying at the Royal Academy of Music, it features some of the most indemand young jazz musicians in London, all of whom are also successful bandleaders themselves: Misha Mullov-Abbado on bass, Alex Munk on guitar and Dave Storey on drums. Singer Alice Zawadzki features on two tracks on the album. ‘Ambitious young band...exploring sophisticated original material’ Time Out, London FULL PRICE £7 | CONC £5 | BSU STUDENTS £3

But when a photograph surfaces showing something in Loch Ness, she must embark on a very personal research project. Ladies and Gentlemen Presented by Lea Anderson and The Cholmondeleys Lea Anderson’s beguiling and jocular soirée of magic, music and dance returns in 2017. Inspired by Music Hall, ‘Ladies and Gentlemen’ is a witty visual spectacle in which choreography (Lea Anderson), music (Steve Blake) and design (Tim Spooner) conjure the all but forgotten stage show of six has-been performers. Besieged by ever shifting, inscrutable and enigmatic props, Man, Woman, the Twins, Pet and the Other One present misremembered routines and hazily recalled punchlines in a tightly knit choreography of objects, sound and music. The result is an eccentric, surreal and often hilarious theatrical experience where regret and failure meet.
Jazz Night: Emily Saunders ESB Internationally renowned and critically acclaimed vocalist Emily Saunders with her superb band ESB will take the stage by storm. Emily brings her powerful mix of Latin-infused grooves, infectious melodies, amazing vocal prowess, rapid technical skill and splashes of spoken word all with a delivery that keep an audience spellbound. This will be only the third date of her new album “Broken” launch tour. Woyzeck
by Georg Büchner Translated by John MacKendrick Directed by Matt Ball Mistreated by the army, abused by doctors and cheated on by your lover, how would you react? Driven mad by love, living off peas, and rushing through life trying to scrape enough together to support a child, Woyzeck is a tragedy of poverty. Written in 1836, Woyzeck is considered the first modern drama, putting an ordinary person at the centre of the drama. A rank and file soldier, caught in the poverty trap, trying to do their best, but unable to find a way out. FULL PRICE £12 | CONC £10 | BSU STUDENTS £6

Vierne – Messe Solenelle Bath Spa University Choir Concert The Messe Solennelle by Louis Vierne is one of the composer’s most enduring works, alongside his six organ symphonies and is an unforgettably potent yet charming addition to the choral repertory. Laced with unmistakably French harmonies, beguiling, melodic chromaticism and powerfully dramatic refrains, the work is a seldom performed masterpiece. The Bath Spa University Choir will also be singing music by Ben Parry, Whitacre Nystdet, Casals and Chesnokov.
“It’s okay, I’m dealing with it” The Hiccup Project Brighton-based company The Hiccup Project present their brilliantly funny comedic dance-theatre follow-up to the award-winning ‘MayWe-Go-Round?’ Cristina and Chess have both experienced smashing their two front teeth. It affected them and it got them thinking. In a culture preoccupied with perfect smiles, keeping a stiff upper lip and for everything to always be ‘fine’: how do we deal with difficult things? What happens if we don’t want to deal with them? Sometimes we laugh, sometimes we cry and sometimes we try our best to distract ourselves. But don’t worry: it’s okay, we’re dealing with it. A performance by Bath Spa University’s Indonesian Gamelan orchestra, featuring tuned gongs, metallophones and other percussion instruments.
Virgin Territory Charlotte Vincent takes a bold and uncompromising look at our hyper-sexualised culture and the impact it is having on girls and young women growing up today. We all want to be ‘liked’ and ‘followed’, but what effect does constantly performing for the camera have on our lives? With real-life testimonies, this multi-layered film installation features stunning cinematography, bold performances by children and adults and asks vital questions about responsibility and being an ‘audience’ as we witness children playing in an adult online world.

The Night of the Iguana
Dance Probe – Antonia Grove Dance
by Tennessee Williams
Antonia Grove, Artistic Director of Probe, presents her brand new solo Now You See It; a powerful work of dance theatre packed full of evocative imagery and featuring a searing central performance by Antonia herself. Written, choreographed and performed by Antonia, Now You See It brings to vivid life the internal universe of a woman contemplating her past and reconsidering her strategies for survival. It is a dialogue between wonder and reason, reality and imagination, small ideas and mammoth consequences, Now You See It marries straight talking dance with story-telling, anecdotes and a little bit of magic.
Deep in the sultry coastal jungle of 1940’s Mexico, a dilapidated hotel houses despair, desire, and redemption in this haunting and deeply moving play by one of America’s greatest playwrights. A defrocked priest with a tormented spirit searches for sanctuary from his personal demons. He is joined by a sensuous, earthy widow, a lustful young girl, and a penniless artist, all of which try to save his desperate soul. Amongst all of this the world’s oldest living poet, struggles to complete his final work. This engrossing story tells of dying dreams, frustrated sexuality, and lost-souls shaped and changed by the turgid, tropical heat that surrounds them. FULL PRICE £12 | CONC £10 | BSU STUDENTS £6
