New hospital a beacon of hope and healing

rightly standing six stories tall just off Interstate 10 between Essen and Bluebonnet, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital opened its doors October 5, serving as a beacon of hope and healing for children throughout Louisiana and the Gulf South region. Our new, state-of-the-art hospital and attached medical office building will help us to reach our goals of leading the state in quality, research and patient care. With a regional network of experienced, highly trained physicians, nurses, providers and team members, the hospital will extend the ministry of lifesaving pediatric health care to Louisiana’s children and beyond for years to come.

With the help of nearly 60,000 donors making gifts ranging from $1 to $1.5 million, we were able to exceed our initial fundraising goal. We now turn our attention to raising support for life-changing programs such as intensive care, surgery, emergency/trauma, child life, pediatric development and therapy center, and hematology/oncology. The best is yet to come,

BRYC to celebrate a decade of persistence

he Baton Rouge Youth Coalition prepares highachieving, under-resourced high school students to enter and excel in college, combatting the unacceptable reality that 14 percent of lowerincome students in the U.S. secure bachelor’s degrees. Of BRYC’s 76-person Class of 2019, 89% matriculated to four-year colleges, while 8% transitioned to two-year colleges and 3% to technical schools. They secured $16 million in scholarships, some remaining local and in-state and others venturing to Stanford, University of Southern California, Northeastern University, Boston College, Emory, Georgia Tech, and beyond. In 2019-2020 BRYC will celebrate its 10-year anniversary and drive a campaign to ensure our next decade. At the center of that campaign is the word

PERSISTENCE, underscoring that BRYC is about longterm success. Our 373 alumni, who represent nearly 60 colleges and live, work, and study in more than 20 states, remain in college at a rate of 86 percent. BRYC too has persisted—from a fledgling engine-that-could to a well-oiled operation of 18 staff members and 130 volunteers serving 250 youth across nine school districts. Ages nine and 10 are when nonprofits are likeliest to fold. BRYC is charging through its decade milestone, stronger than ever, preparing for continued expansion. Warmly,

Each fall, the Walk/Run to Remember raises awareness and funds to assist those affected by Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Corporate sponsorships, table hosts, and team captain opportunities are available. A direct mail Annual Giving campaign is held every November. VO LU N T E E R I N G/G I V I N G VOLUNTEERS COMPLEMENT THE staff by helping in the office with phones, office work, and the resource library, assisting with health fair booths, facilitating support groups, serving on committees, helping at the Walk/Run to Remember and other events, as well as entertaining or assisting at Charlie’s Place Respite and Activity Centers in Baton Rouge or Gonzales. Interested volunteers should attend an Alzheimer’s Services informational session to learn where they can contribute their time.

FOR 65 YEARS, McMains Children’s Developmental Center has served children with disabilities and developmental delays. We aim to give these children the tools they need to reach their highest level of independence and create a brighter future for our community. We work toward this goal by providing speech, occupational, physical and educational therapeutic interventions as well as social work and case management, pro bono orthopedic clinic with local physicians, psychological services, assistive technology therapy, and family programs (summer art camp, a canoe trip, adaptive bike program and more) to all children, regardless of the family’s ability to pay in full.

Additionally, in our 11-parish service area, 1 in 7 of the population are food insecure, which means they do not know where their next meal will come from, or if it will even come at all. Our goal is to reduce the number of food insecure individuals and households throughout our community by collecting, purchasing and distributing food through our 115-plus agencies, which directly feed those facing hunger.

FUNDRAISING/EVENTS CULINARY ARTS FOR Healing Hearts is Grief Recovery Center’s signature fundraiser. Guests enjoy savory dishes prepared by local restaurants, caterers and chefs. OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Grief Recovery Center is a 501(c)3 non-profit counseling agency. The mission of the Grief Recovery Center is to compassionately assist those experiencing grief, trauma, and loss through counseling, support, and education.

Our non-profit agency relies on funding from local grants, fees for services, and donations from individuals and businesses to assist our clients in moving beyond the pain of grief. FUNDRAISING/EVENTS WE HOST SEVERAL major fundraisers each year, including Hollydays, a popular shopping market with delectable foods and exciting entertainment, which is held each October. This fundraiser is themed “Shopping for a Cause” and included special events for the entire family. We also created the original River Road Recipes cookbook, the number one bestselling community cookbook series in the country with nearly 2 million copies in print. Touch a Truck is another unique, interactive event that allows children to see, touch and explore their favorite big trucks and heavy equipment, as well as meet the individuals who protect, serve and build Baton Rouge. This year, we will host our first Women’s Leadership Conference on March 13, 2020. Our keynote speaker is Laila Ali and the day will be filled with training opportunities for personal, professional and civic growth.

Because we have a family member with a disability, we understand the importance of supporting others facing similar experiences. The three core services of FHFGBR are parent-to-parent support, education/training, and referrals to

services both in-house and in the community. These services are accomplished through support calls, networking and workshops. Disability-related supports and referrals are available to anyone at any time. Understanding the importance of awareness and acceptance of individuals with disabilities in the community helps us achieve our ultimate goal of inclusion.

FUNDRAISING/EVENTS DONATIONS TO OUR organization support programs that we offer to families free of charge throughout eight parishes. This includes workshops and webinars for families, professionals and self-advocates. THE NATURE CONSERVANCY works around the world to protect important lands and waters so that nature and people can thrive. For the Louisiana chapter, this means constructing oyster reefs in Calcasieu Lake, restoring critical wetlands in the Atchafalaya River Basin, restoring and managing longleaf pine forests, and much more across the state.

Our many projects reflect the rich variety of natural systems that support people, plants, and animals throughout Louisiana. We want to conserve Louisiana’s freshwater, forests, and coasts, not just for their own sake, but for their ability to enrich our lives and fulfill our needs.

OUR VISITOR CENTER at Cypress Island is staffed by dedicated volunteers who welcome visitors to the 10,000acre preserve. Our Cypress Island Preserve features one of the largest waterbird rookeries in North America, and plenty of people flock to it as well.
