Helping others strengthens our community and our world

4 2019 AFP Award Recipients

EACH NOVEMBER, COMMUNITIES across the country celebrate philanthropy (literally, the “love of mankind”) and recognize the many acts of compassion and charity Rolfe McCollister, Jr. that happen every day among us. For our part, we have assembled this special Giving Guide to introduce you to organizations that are making a difference in our community by providing hope and healing to those who need it most. The end of the year is a time when many companies and individuals traditionally make donation decisions and also plan for the year ahead. We hope this publication will be helpful to you as you close your year and plan your own philanthropy for 2020. The 28 nonprofits featured in these pages share their mission, funding, projects and events—and hopefully will inspire readers to donate or volunteer their time and talents as well. The Greater Baton Rouge chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals celebrated its 29th National Philanthropy Day this year and is hosting a special luncheon on Nov. 12 at the Renaissance Hotel to honor the outstanding philanthropists in our community. inRegister magazine is proud to again serve as a presenting sponsor for this event. The 2019 honorees are featured on page 4. We salute them and all those in the Capital Region who work every day to build a stronger community. All of us at Business Report, 225, inRegister, and 10/12 Industry Report appreciate the generosity of readers like you and the amazing nonprofits and charities in this guide. We also want to thank our sponsors this year— East Baton Rouge Parish Library, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital, and Baton Rouge Youth Coalition. I encourage you to browse this Giving Guide and connect with the causes that speak to your heart.

FROM THE SPONSORS

Library helps nonprofits with fundraising tools

T

he East Baton Rouge Parish Library offers a variety of resources for nonprofit organizations at the Grants Center. Did you know that 90% of domestic foundations don’t have a website? Foundation Directory Online, only available at the River Center Branch Library, gives you access to these hard-tofind funders, plus the most effective tools to organize and manage your foundation fundraising process. Our Grants Librarian can assist you with your search, whether you are a grant seeker, grant-maker, or just curious about the grants process. For an appointment, call (225) 389-4964. We also host free programs periodically for grant seekers. The Library also offers a variety of free tools that can help nonprofit organizations assess and strengthen their business model, perform needs assessments, research

funding opportunities, locate community partners, and provide skills training and workforce development for staff. These resources are available free 24/7 in the Digital Library. A consultation via Small Business Services (SmallBusiness@ebrpl.com) will help your group create an effective strategy, whether it’s enhancing your own skills as a grant seeker, writing a business plan, getting reliable and relevant local statistics, or finding out about potential corporate funders. All you need is your Library card!

New hospital a beacon of hope and healing

B

rightly standing six stories tall just off Interstate 10 between Essen and Bluebonnet, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital opened its doors October 5, serving as a beacon of hope and healing for children throughout Louisiana and the Gulf South region. Our new, state-of-the-art hospital and attached medical office building will help us to reach our goals of leading the state in quality, research and patient care. With a regional network of experienced, highly trained physicians, nurses, providers and team members, the hospital will extend the ministry of lifesaving pediatric health care to Louisiana’s children and beyond for years to come.

With the help of nearly 60,000 donors making gifts ranging from $1 to $1.5 million, we were able to exceed our initial fundraising goal. We now turn our attention to raising support for life-changing programs such as intensive care, surgery, emergency/trauma, child life, pediatric development and therapy center, and hematology/oncology. The best is yet to come,

TREY DUNBAR, MD President Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health

BRYC to celebrate a decade of persistence

T

he Baton Rouge Youth Coalition prepares highachieving, under-resourced high school students to enter and excel in college, combatting the unacceptable reality that 14 percent of lowerincome students in the U.S. secure bachelor’s degrees. Of BRYC’s 76-person Class of 2019, 89% matriculated to four-year colleges, while 8% transitioned to two-year colleges and 3% to technical schools. They secured $16 million in scholarships, some remaining local and in-state and others venturing to Stanford, University of Southern California, Northeastern University, Boston College, Emory, Georgia Tech, and beyond. In 2019-2020 BRYC will celebrate its 10-year anniversary and drive a campaign to ensure our next decade. At the center of that campaign is the word

PERSISTENCE, underscoring that BRYC is about longterm success. Our 373 alumni, who represent nearly 60 colleges and live, work, and study in more than 20 states, remain in college at a rate of 86 percent. BRYC too has persisted—from a fledgling engine-that-could to a well-oiled operation of 18 staff members and 130 volunteers serving 250 youth across nine school districts. Ages nine and 10 are when nonprofits are likeliest to fold. BRYC is charging through its decade milestone, stronger than ever, preparing for continued expansion. Warmly,

LUCAS SPIELFOGEL BRYC Executive Director

Food insecurity means that an individual does not know where or when they will find their next meal. Food insecure households may not always be food insecure, but it may reflect a household’s need to decide between basic needs - such as housing, paying bills and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods. of compassion & hope”

W

hen you see someone on a street corner with a sign that says, “Homeless- Need Help,” your first instinct may be to hand them a cash donation, but we do not recommend that approach. Many people are homeless because they have lost a job, become disabled, and have no family or friends to turn to, but some are homeless because of mental illness or problems with addiction. What they all need is a safe place to stay, people who care, and a chance to get back on their feet. That’s the purpose of the St. Vincent de Paul “Hope Card” - to tell those who are in a situation of homelessness about the services we provide. GOALS GIRL SCOUTS IS the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. Each year more than 12,000 girls in our council participate in programming that offers them chances to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success. Your philanthropy goes to several critical needs—training and resources for volunteers on whom the Girl Scout model relies, the maintenance and improvement of our camp properties, and financial aid for girls to ensure that cost is never a barrier to participation in Girl Scouting.

OUR SINGULAR GOAL is to provide adaptive bikes to children and young adults with special needs such as Spina Bifida, Cerebral Palsy, Battens Disease, Charge Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Autism, etc. These bikes change lives and we will continue to provide them because we have learned that they promote inclusion and build confidence.

FUNDRAISING/ EVENTS WHAT STARTED 12 years ago as a “Bikes for Christmas” project quickly turned into a yearround endeavor. More than 320 bikes have been delivered since 2008, and that is possible because of the individual donors and corporations who have realized they can be the change for these families of children with special needs. We are fortunate to have amazing donors who have hosted softball tournaments, tennis tournaments, school fundraisers, honor rides and donor matching to benefit MFF.

ESTABLISHED IN 1992, FHFGBR is a familydriven resource center for individuals with disabilities and their families. Because we have a family member with a disability, we understand the importance of supporting others facing similar experiences. services both in-house and in the community. These services are accomplished through support calls, networking and workshops. Disability-related supports and referrals are available to anyone at any time. Understanding the importance of awareness and acceptance of individuals with disabilities in the community helps us achieve our ultimate goal of inclusion.

FUNDRAISING/EVENTS DONATIONS TO OUR organization support programs that we offer to families free of charge throughout eight parishes. This includes workshops and webinars for families, professionals and self-advocates. Our Active for Autism 5K Run, Fun Walk & Family Fun Fest supports our unique program, the Resource Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (RCASD). Sponsorship opportunities are available. We will host a Gala event on October 22, 2020 at the City Club of Baton Rouge. Building Families, One Child at a Time... At St. Elizabeth Foundation, our focus is helping to build families and to assist birth mothers. We understand that there is stress on both sides, whether deciding how to handle an unplanned pregnancy or deciding to adopt. We know that the process is not alway easy, but that’s where we come in. THE NATURE CONSERVANCY works around the world to protect important lands and waters so that nature and people can thrive. For the Louisiana chapter, this means constructing oyster reefs in Calcasieu Lake, restoring critical wetlands in the Atchafalaya River Basin, restoring and managing longleaf pine forests, and much more across the state.

Our many projects reflect the rich variety of natural systems that support people, plants, and animals throughout Louisiana. We want to conserve Louisiana’s freshwater, forests, and coasts, not just for their own sake, but for their ability to enrich our lives and fulfill our needs.

FUNDRAISING/EVENTS OUR DONORS AND partners are often invited to participate in field trips and volunteer events at our beautiful preserves throughout the state. There are opportunities to go on guided tours with our conservation staff, to explore Louisiana’s natural treasures, and participate in activities like planting trees and bagging oyster shells for reef restoration. Many of our preserves—Abita Creek, Cypress Island and Grand Isle—are open for the public to explore!

OUR VISITOR CENTER at Cypress Island is staffed by dedicated volunteers who welcome visitors to the 10,000acre preserve. Our Cypress Island Preserve features one of the largest waterbird rookeries in North America, and plenty of people flock to it as well. The preserve is located near Breaux Bridge in St. Martin Parish. For more information on this and other ways to get involved, check our website and follow us on Facebook. INDIVIDUAL, FOUNDATION, AND corporate donations are welcomed and crucial for developing ongoing and future conservation projects. Donors receive four copies of Nature Conservancy, our magazine, each year. You can donate online, set up a monthly gift, or join our Legacy Club by naming The Nature Conservancy in your estate plans. Donations support a huge range of research, restoration, and natural land management throughout the state. We couldn’t do it without you!
