Low back pain can have many causes, but for a lot of people it’s simple aging and wear and tear. You can end up with lower back pain due to arthritis of the spine, herniated discs or a back injury from repetitive use. Your back pain can be exacerbated by your lifestyle. Three things that can make back pain much worse include smoking, having bad posture, and being overweight or obese.

HOW DOES POSTURE AFFECT BACK PAIN?

If you work at a desk all day, your posture is the most important thing you can pay attention to. Position your monitor level with your line of sight when looking straight ahead, position your keyboard so your arm forms a right angle at the elbow, and get an ergonomic chair to help you sit straight with both feet on the floor.

DOES YOUR MATTRESS MAKE A DIFFERENCE?

A bad mattress can allow your hips to sink too far or not far enough, causing your spine to get stuck in a bad position. Try a new mattress and use a body pillow between your knees for better spine posture at night.

Let’s just pretend you might want to be a runner...

WHERE DO YOU GO FROM HERE? GO AHEAD AND ENTER A 5K EVENT

Even if the date is six months away - commit to it. Did you notice we said “5K event” and not “5K race”? Most of the 5Ks in town are really fun benefit-oriented events. They are more about the fun and party than about how fast you can go. It gives you a goal. It keeps you on track.

UNDERSTAND THAT YOU ARE NOT THE SLOWEST ONE OUT THERE! Well, maybe you are, but who cares? It’s surprising to a lot of beginning runners how productive walking and running can be.

And for that person who is the slowest one out there - YOU ARE OUT THERE! Unlike the 99 of 100 people you probably know.

ACCEPT THAT IT AIN’T ALL THAT GREAT WHEN YOU START But it gets better. Much better. That’s what getting fit is all about: asking your body to get stronger each time you ask it to do a little more. Six weeks is the magic number. Commit to yourself for 6 weeks. If it ends up that running is not for you at least you gave it your best. But 6 weeks is usually the turning point for making a real difference in fitness.

JOIN A GROUP. OR RUN WITH A COMMITTED FRIEND There is accountability when someone is expecting you to be there. You are there for each other. When you say “Group runs are not for me,” are you saying “group runs scare me because I am afraid I am not fast enough?”

If the answer is “Yes, I am intimidated” - go to a group run at least ONE day and see for yourself.

VARIETY, VARIETY, VARIETY It’s important to keep it fresh. Run different routes. Run fast and also slow. Baton Rouge has some wonderful places to walk and run. Go downtown around the Capitol. Head down the levee.

Loop the lakes. Goodwood Park is a wonderful half mile, safe loop. Vary the paces. Run fast from light pole to light pole. Then easy the next two poles. Find some hills. Use those to build leg strength and get that heart rate up. Run up the hill, and walk back down.
