THERE’S A NEW air of excitement around the LSU football program that hasn’t quite been there since the Tigers’ historic 2019 season. That’s not to say that anyone in Baton Rouge is expecting a rerun of that magical year. But any time a new coach takes over, a wave of confi dence and optimism naturally follows. Especially when that coach comes with a resume like Brian Kelly’s.
The Tigers’ new coach brings with him a wealth of knowledgeable and experienced assistants, who we chatted with this summer to help paint a picture of what LSU might look like come fall on page A41. “I think we’re sneaky good,” offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock tells 225. “We’ve got some talented players on this roster. (LSU), to me, is an incredible destination job.”
Both new coordinators inherit a stocked cupboard of talent, headlined by another dynamic quarterback battle between Myles Brennan and Jayden Daniels, which we cover on page A51. No matter who winds up winning the job, they’ll be working in part with running back Noah Cain, who tells us on page A58 why he decided to return home to Baton Rouge after a three-year stint at Penn State. Speaking of the Capital City, LSU is hosting Southern University for the first time in football history in a Red Stick showdown. We spoke with representatives from both schools on page A26 to hear what it will be like for the cross-town schools to face off and what fans can expect from the Human Jukebox’s first performance in Tiger Stadium. From food to fashion to even more football, there’s plenty between these pages to get you ready for the fall.So bust out your lucky jerseys, dust off those tailgating tools, and get ready to spend Saturdays with 102,000 of your closest friends. Because there’s a new, exciting era beginning at LSU.

Changing of the guard
While that mark puts him a dozen wins ahead of Alabama’s Nick Saban (272), Kelly is already speaking the language of LSU fans when asked about his goals for this program. “I want to beat Nick Saban,” Kelly said in a press conference earlier this spring. “Who doesn’t want to beat Nick Saban? I’ve always felt that you never run from a job, you run to a job. I never ran from Notre Dame. I ran to an opportunity, and I just felt like this was a great opportunity.”That’smusic to my ears. In this year’s annual edition of Tiger Pride, we’re taking a deep dive into what the first year of the Brian Kelly era will bring to Baton Rouge, from a flurry of new faces to a fully revamped coaching staff and everything in between.

HAVE YOU HEARD of The Griddy? You may have noticed the trending dance taking over TikTok, athletes doing it as a victory celebration during sporting events or spotted videos of celebrities like singer Ciara Wilson and WWE wrestler Kofi Kingston hitting The Griddy online. Before going viral on social media in 2021, this worldwide dance sensation was originally started in 2017 by New Orleans native Allen “Lah Griddy” Davis. He was a freshman at Landry Walker Col lege and Career Preparatory High School when he started doing the dance and was filmed by a friend on Snapchat. The following day, he woke up to screen re cordings of his dance being shared and saw people trying to do it themselves. He then named the hoppy, light heel-tap ping dance after himself: “The Griddy.”
The dance is now more than a social media trend. It made its way to video games and mainstream music. It’s featured in the video game Fortnite, so players can purchase the dance move to use in the game. Lil Wayne mentioned it in the song “Anti-Hero,” and Quavo from the hip-hop trio Migos mentioned it in Gucci Mane’s song “First Impression.” “Ciara and Russell Wilson, people I used to watch on TV, are hitting my dance,” Davis says. “ESPN mentions my dance every month. I just want my recognition.”Andso,he plans to continue sharing The Griddy dance with the world. He sells Griddy merchandise online and dreams of eventually opening his own store with Griddy-themed apparel, traveling the world to perform his music and dance—and someday having a Griddy statue at LSU. Find Griddy merch and more at getgriddy.live.

“I just thought it’d be a regular dance,” Davis says. “I never expected it to go this far.”When Davis was in high school, he trained for football with Bengals wide receiver and former LSU player Ja’Marr Chase. Chase then introduced the dance to LSU football players, and they eventually started doing it at NFL games as a celebratory dance move. In weeks, The Griddy spread like wildfire. Davis’ dance was on TV and phone screens everywhere.Athletesfrom football, basketball, baseball, soccer and wrestling have been filmed doing the Louisiana-made dance after touchdowns, scores and wins. Some athletes include Alex Bregman of the Astros, Lebron James from the Lakers, Ziaire Williams from the Grizzlies and former LSU Tiger and Rams wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. “My dance is really for champions,” DavisSincesays.the dance went viral, people have created their own variations and versions of The Griddy. The original dance includes small steps, with pressure on your heels and your toes pointed up. Lightly hop from heel to heel while mov ing in a forward motion. After a few hops, put your hands in the shape of lowercase Bs (for Big Billionaire), look through your hands and swing your arms behind you. (You can watch videos of Davis doing the dance on his Instagram at @lahgriddy.)

The moment the LSU Veterinary Medicine students approach his habitat, Mike locks eyes and strides toward them. He emits loud chuffs—a tiger’s vocal sign of trust. He briefly presses his head against the window, as if trying to break the barrier that separates them. Being a caretaker for Mike is a twoyear, 365-day-a-year commitment.
While completing the required phases of veterinarian school—lectures, labs, externships and caring for patients in the hospital—the students work as a team to ensure Mike gets his needs metIneveryday.themorning, Talbot and Guillory check his demeanor and what he ate the night Afterward, before.the duo cleans Mike’s habitat before releasing him back intoAtit.night, they evaluate his overall mood and health, then feed him. It’s a coveted job and a once-in-alifetimeTalbotexperience.andGuillory always had interest in the position, even before attending the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine. Talbot is a Baton Rouge native and grew up visiting the LSU mascot with her family. She remembers discovering in high school that vet students take care of the tiger. “That’s when I decided that I wanted to go to LSU and I wanted to take care of Mike,” Talbot recalls. Guillory also knew about this position while she was an undergrad at Louisiana Tech University, where she was on the care team for the school’s bulldog mascot Techie. “I’m really big into community service and giving back to the community,” Guillory says. When she enrolled at LSU, she thought caring for Mike would be a really cool way to be able to give back. Talbot and Guillory applied for the position this past January. The vet students submitted an initial application, sending their resumes and cover letters. From there, they were interviewed by Mike the Tiger’s main veterinarian, Dr. David Baker. Vet students are required to apply for the position in pairs (although there is no guarantee that they will be placed as partners for the position). Talbot and Guillory, luckily, got selected as a pair. “You apply with somebody you work well with,” Talbot says. “This is a very teamwork-heavy job. We have been together every morning, every night, since February 1, doing this job.”During their early days on the job, they met with the previous caretakers every morning and night to learn about their daily duties and develop a bond with Mike. By May, Talbot and Guillory started completing these tasks on their own. They say their bond with him is strong, even though there’s always a barrier that protects them from ever having direct physical contact with the 400-pound tiger. “He is a wild animal,” Guillory says. “That’s very important to note. When we’re talking about our bond with him, we always have that in the back of our mind. But it is important to build that relationship with him so that he trusts us, and that we can always ensure that he is getting the best care and he is as happy as can be.” lsu.edu

The portraits were a clever, high-low design move that enabled Jubans to fortify its Tiger Nation commitment while avoiding well-trod imagery. Absent are cartoonish Mikes and purple and gold. In their place is a vibe that’s partVictorian explorer and part-Mad Men. Tigers—and peacocks—comprise colorful jungle wallpaper on one wall in this boozy backroom. A large screen TV ensures you won’t miss a big game. Despite the artworks’ digital production, Xdesign has no plans to reproduce or sell them, Territo says. As for the subjects, Territo says their response has also been positive. “Most of the people pictured have either seen their piece first-hand, or it has been shared with them via text,” he says. “The feedback has been very positive.” jubans.com
But, surprise! The works weren’t painted at all. They were digitally rendered by Xdesign lead designer Simone Broussard. “People one-hundred percent think they are actual paintings,” Territo says. “(Simone) spent hours creating each one, perfectly pairing the posture and environment of each painting with that person. No detail was overlooked, down to the cigar in Joe Burrow’s hand.”

A FAVORITE SPOT at the recently refreshed Jubans is the moody Tigre Room, a library-ish parlor off the restaurant’s sprawling Atrium Bar. Situated behind a sliding trick wall, it’s become a sought-after space for sipping a cocktail or enjoying a meal. And one of the biggest reasons why is its artwork. At first glance, the Tigre Room’s seven paintings seem like the stodgy heroic portraiture you spy on a museum field trip. But peer closer, and there go the bells of recognition. Yep, that’s Shaquille O’Neal, Joe Burrow, Tyrann Mathieu, Andrew Whitworth, Leonard Fournette, Alex Bregman and D-D Breaux staring back at you in periodResponsedress.to the paintings has been big, says Hunter Territo, president of Xdesign, which led Jubans’ rebranding. Aside from the restaurant’s menu, the Tigre Room artwork is Jubans’ most photographed and shared element on social me dia, Territo says. “Guests constantly ask who painted them,” he says. “We’ve even had a couple guests reach out about wanting to purchase one of them, and also creating a custom one for someone they know.”

“A LOT OF people go for it because it’s unique—how many times do you eat a purple dessert?” asks Kay Vong, owner of Sweet Society, a Mid City dessert shop that features ube soft serve. Though ube, which means tuber in Tagalog, has long been a staple of Filipino desserts, its popularity has exploded in the U.S. over the past few years. The purple yam has a distinct, nutty flavor profile, and its violet hue makes ube desserts immediately photogenic. At Sweet Society, ube is a staple ingredient in ice cream—often swirled together with milk ice cream and paired with taiyaki cake. It also marries nicely with the shop’s Pineapple Dole Whip soft serve—swirled together for a purple- and gold-hued frozen treat. Boba ParTea, a boba shop and bakery on O’Neal Lane, makes ube-flavored macarons and customizable cakes. The pretty purple color of ube, combined with the moist texture of ube cakes, makes the demand high—especially in the“Everyonefall. wants an ube cake with mango,” says owner Van Nguyen, “because yellow and purple go so well with football season.” Both Vong and Ngyuen have noticed the growing popularity of ube, crediting it to the vibrant hue and the distinct, sweet, deep flavor. At both Boba ParTea and Sweet Society, ube dishes attract people familiar with the desserts as well as newcomers to ube, who might be further encouraged to try more desserts using Southeast Asian ingredients. “We try to use more Asian flavors (in the bakery), and ube is one of the most popular Asian flavors,” Nguyen says. “We are hoping to come out with more ube-flavored desserts soon. These would include ube cheesecake and halo-halo, another cold Filipino dessert that makes use of ube and evaporated milk.” Of Sweet Society’s four ever-changing flavors, ube is almost always on rotation. “It’s our day one. It was in our very first set of flavors we introduced,” Vong says. “The few times I have removed it from the rotation, we did get a little feedback about customers being upset that ube was not available.” And if you are looking to experiment with ube in your own dishes—or try other ube treats—Vong recommends exploring local Asian markets. “The Asian grocery stores are probably the best bet to get ube snacks or pastries,” she says.

Where to eat when the Tigers play away By Maggie Heyn Richardson THIS FALL, the Tiger faithful will hit the road to watch LSU take on some of its biggest rivals. The 2022 football season includes away games at Auburn’s Jordan-Hare stadium, Texas A&M’s Kyle Field and the University of Florida’s Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, aka The Swamp. Fans will miss what is arguably college football’s greatest tailgate scene back home. But while on the road, there are plenty of regional flavors to savor. Here are a few to try.

Totally on brand, a popular concession at Razorback Stadium is smoked sausage, which you can sample while enduring way too much “wooo pig sooey.” When the game’s over, try Fayetteville faves like the casual and affordable Catfish Hole, known for fried seafood, frog legs and hush puppies with honey butter dipping sauce. Another popular spot is Hugo’s in historic Fayetteville, a basement bar and bistro open since 1977 with sandwiches, salads, burgers and sweet and savory crepes. The Grasshopper crepes are filled with mint ice cream and topped with fudge sauce. College Station, TX The Tiger Nation heads to College Station this year for a Thanksgiving weekend face-off against the Aggies. At Kyle Field, sample beef jerky and the all-beef Aggie Dog, all manner of nachos, and fare from Walk-On’s. After the game, head to Dixie Chicken, a rustic 12th man hangout serving cold beer and belt-expanding bar food. For something more refined, ease into white-tableclothed comfort at Republic Steakhouse and its bigger-is-better menu of bone-in and bone-off cuts, steakhouse sides and even chicken fried filet mignon. Only in Texas.

The passion and of LSU football Tiger Pride MARK YOUR CALENDARS, football fans. Sept. 10 will go down in Baton Rouge history as the first time the Southern University Jaguars and the Human Jukebox will battle the LSU Tigers at Tiger Stadium. If you’ve lived in Baton Rouge long enough, this is probably one of your wildest dreams. After years of whispers, theories and chatter, Southern and LSU are finally joining forces for the ultimate Baton Rouge college football showdown. The long-awaited game is scheduled for kickoff at 6:30 p.m. at Tiger Stadium. Though they wear different colors, the two historic universities, just 15 minutes apart, have many similarities. They both have a proud and devoted fanbase, a booming tailgating culture, award-winning bands and are the alma mater for many notable players from the NFL. Some former Southern Jaguars that went to the NFL include Los Angeles Rams Isiah Robertson and Kansas City Chiefs Robert Holmes. Former LSU Tigers can also be spotted in NFL teams all over the country, like Joe Burrow with the Cincinnati Bengals, Jamal Adams with the Seattle Seahawks and Tyrann Matthieu with the New Orleans Saints. “This will be historic,” says Roman Banks, athletic director at Southern. “In lieu of what’s going on in our country, we’re bringing people together. This will engage all races in the city. Just to join hands in the city of Baton Rouge is going to be admirable andConversationsinspirational.”about an LSU versus Southern game have circulated for years.“We’ve been working hard to make this game happen,” Banks says. “We’ve been trying for several years. By fate, the time is now.” Cue up the sports anthem “We Ready” by Archie Eversole, because football fans and band alums and supporter alike are eager for the highly anticipated game.

Outside of the football game, the music performances are enough reason to attend the flagship school face-off. It’s not every day you get to see The Human Jukebox, a worldrenowned band that has worked alongside superstars like Beyoncé and Lizzo, play on LSU’s turf. “I am looking forward to the atmosphere in Tiger Stadium,” says Ingram Scott, the parent of a Human Jukebox student. “Having our son playing in the Southern Human Jukebox that day will be the cherry on top.”No matter what team you’re sup porting, the game is a once-in-a-life time experience that many Baton Rougeans would love to see happen“Hopefullyagain. this will be the beginning of a series,” Scott says. “They should at least play every three to four years. It will give the players and support staff a chance to build relationships.”strongersubr. edu and lsusports.net

LORI: I was a member of the only national champion cheerleading team at LSU, which was pretty exciting. Kentucky won every year. Kentucky dominates the cheer scene, to this day. But when we went, we hit a perfect routine, so it came down to us and Kentucky. And everybody thought Kentucky had it, so when they announced us as the winners, we were like, ‘Yes!’ And, honestly, I don’t even think that we were the most talented, but we were the most determined.
LORI: I think we just all bleed purple and gold. I think it was just all of our paths. And it makes me laugh, because they always say that boys marry women like their moms.
LAUREN: Probably pregame, doing it before every football game. Every year they would do pretty much the same thing, but they would kind of twist it up with different stunts and different basket tosses and stuff. But it’s just the same pregame dance that has been passed on generation to generation. All five of us know the same dance.

LAUREN: I felt like I instantly bonded in the family. Being a part of a family of LSU cheerleaders, we can instantly relate to one another. We just have something in common and something to share and talk about, and it’s fun to see the different traditions that have been passed on throughout the generations. We have that one special thing in common, and so we can relate to each other a lot better.
JENSEN: My freshman year, we beat Georgia at home, and we stormed the field. All the student section came onto the field. It was crazy. That was probably my favorite memory on the team. Also, when I was going into my junior year at LSU, during cheer camp in the summer, our coaches asked all of the LSU cheer alumni to send letters to our current team, just wishing them well and giving advice, and everyone got a random letter from an alumna. But when I opened mine, I had four letters, and I was like, ‘This is weird, because everyone else only had one’. So, Miss Toni, Miss Lori, Lauren and Abby had all written me letters, giving me advice and telling me about their time at LSU and that was super special, because I don’t know that there’s ever been a tradition like this, so it was really special to just share those words.

T HE KINCHEN FAMILY name carries some formidable weight around Baton Rouge, boasting some of the highest clout one can attain in this town: a long, decorated legacy in LSU football. And, while the spotlight has traditionally shone on the Kinchen men wearing the purple and gold on the field, there is yet another Kinchen legacy that’s carried on just off the sidelines: a parallel lineage of Kinchen women cheering on theSo,Tigers. toshine a light on this side of the Kinchen legacy, 225 sat down with three generations of Kinchen women—whose tenures on the LSU cheer team date all the way from the late 1950s to the present.Wetalk about their time on the team, their memories, and their thoughts on the Kinchen family legacy. And it’ll come as no surprise that their veins carry just as much purple and gold as their helmeted counterparts. What’s one of your favorite memories? TONI: It had to be just standing on the ground at the bottom of the stadium when everyone was yelling. I mean, that wasn’t 100,000 people like it is now, be cause they didn’t have the top row at all. But it was just the tumultuous roar of all the people in the stadium. It makes my hair stand up on my head right now.
ABBY: It’s certainly unique. I do think that being an LSU cheerleader is certainly a sought-after position by many people, and few attain it. And, being born and raised in Louisiana, I realize what the weight of having that title is for you know, young girls who look up to the cheerleaders and everything. So I think it’s just a special opportunity to have that position in general, and then to have it continue in a family is even more unique. It’s cool to have those same bonds and memories, even though none of us were ever on the same team, but just having similar experiences and opportunities.
The Kinchen family has been cheering on the Tigers for multiple generations only freshmen on the nationals team, so that whole experience was really fun. We competed right around the end of January, and LSU goes on Christmas break from early December through January, so if you’re on the nationals team, you kind of have to stay behind and practice throughout that time. But it was a lot of fun, good bonding with the people on the team, and we got to go compete in Orlando.

What should we expect from LSU football this fall?
INSIDE: One year of NIL / New leadership
ODDSMAKERS ARE COMPLETELY torn on what to make of Brian Kelly’s first season in Baton Rouge. It is understandable, considering the last time we saw LSU, a receiver was playing quarterback, there were only 39 players available, and the offensive line coach was the head coach. Since then, LSU spent nine figures to pluck Kelly from Notre Dame, who then turned over nearly half of the roster and hired 48 (!) new staff members.

The Hogs have been better than LSU the past two seasons. That needs to change. Immediately. But a road conference game against a team that thinks they’re your rival a week after Bama is a tough spot.
Nov. 26 at Texas A&M The Aggies bring a beautiful stadium, a championship head coach and the highest-rated recruiting class ever. For the Tigers to maintain their dominance in this series, they’ll have to beat their former QB Max Johnson. That’s a challenge these Tigers should embrace.
Oct. 1 at Auburn Bryan Harsin was nearly fired after one season. Bo Nix is now the QB at Oregon. Still, winning at Jordan Hare is never easy.
Matt Moscona is the awardwinning host of After Further Review, heard weekdays on ESPN Radio in Baton Rouge, New Orleans and Alexandria. Sept. 4 vs. Florida State (in New Orleans) Kelly’s Irish opened with the Seminoles last year. The familiarity will help. So will the Domefield advantage.
Oct. 8 vs. Tennessee In year one under Josh Heupel, the Vols were seventh nationally at 39 points per game. This will be the first real test for Matt House’s new defense. Oct. 15 at Florida Billy Napier’s Gators are nearly as big a mystery as the Tigers. One thing is for certain: Florida won’t be in line for another historic upset, since they won’t be a double-digit favorite. Oct. 22 vs. Ole Miss LSU was embarrassed in Oxford last year. If the players circle one game this season, the Rebels would be a good bet. Oct. 29 (Open date) Nov. 5 vs. Alabama Brian Kelly told a podcast this summer that he wanted to beat Nick Saban. Be careful what you wish for. You might just get the chance. Every. Single. Year.

They’ll have to answer some major questions and navigate a typically treacherous SEC slate to end up on the higher end of those projections. Here’s how things could play out.

LSU’s partnership with personal injury attorney Gordon McKernan has been the headline NIL deal thus far. McKernan, who is a well-known figure around the Capital City, featured five LSU football players— Kayshon Boutte, Gregory Brooks, Miles Frazier, Malik Nabers and Kyren Lacy—in a Super Bowl LVI commercial earlier this year, as well as individual social media posts highlighting each athlete.
LSU HAS CREATIVELY concocted a handful of marketing monikers for itself over the past few years. DBU. WRU. NFLSU. The newest one to take off is NILSU, hinting at the rapid rise of Name, Image and Likeness deals that are becoming more and more common and accessible to student athletes across the country. In short, these NIL deals give college athletes “the ability to use their own name, image or likeness for personal gain in ways permitted within institutional and state legislation.”NILsponsorships are only about a year old, but LSU has fully embraced the changing landscape by helping its student-athletes navigate through the entire NIL process. The university has teamed up with Altius Sports Partners to provide individual consulting, strategic planning, compliance support and education.
The benefits can already be seen, as a multitude of LSU athletes across a variety of sports have landed sponsorships in the past year. We’ve seen everything from wide receiver Jack Bech releasing his own clothing line to quarterback Myles Brennan dancing around Walk-On’s. Here is a list of just some of the NIL deals LSU football players have landed in the past few months—and plenty more will surely follow this fall.

In the running-back room specif ically, Denbrock gave praise to John Emery Jr., saying, “I don’t think there’s anything that he can’t do,” in the offense, while also naming Noah Cain, Armoni Goodwin and Josh Williams as some promising, versatile backs. Denbrock will have a decision to make at quarterback, as it seems to be a three-man race going down to the wire, but regardless of who winds up taking the first-team snaps, the Tigers know they have an embarrassment of riches to work with on the outside.
“(The wide receivers) are really fun to watch,” Denbrock says. “That group is as talented and deep as any on this team. There are a number of guys in that room that I feel like when called Mike Denbrock new-look LSU How a complete overhaul of the coaching staff might reshape the Tigers
Denbrock and Kelly’s relationship goes way back, so this hire made a lot of sense on paper. The duo worked together at Grand Valley State back in the 90s and recon nected again for six seasons when Kelly was hired at Notre Dame in 2010. Denbrock, who helped lead Cincinnati to its ever College Football Playoff appearance last year, now heads to Baton Rouge as the pair attempts to recreate the successes they’ve had at their previous stops.“(LSU), to me, is an incredible destination job,” Denbrock tells 225. “It’s a program that I’ve watched from where I was in the coaching profession for many, many years. I was always a little bit in awe of the great things that have gone on here and the great players that have come through here. When the opportunity presented itself for me to become part of the program, it was something that was just too good to pass up on.” Despite the Tigers’ middling record the past couple of seasons, Denbrock certainly isn’t inheriting an empty cupboard.Butinorder to maximize on the talent at his disposal, the 58-yearold playcaller says it all starts up front.“Number one: We’re going to establish the run and establish the line of scrimmage with a style of play that is physical and is intense,” he says. “We’re going to play hard, and we’re going to go about our business in a way that would make the LSU community really proud of how hard we play. It starts there with setting the tone across the entire offense. And then I think on top of that, we want to be a team that stretches the field vertically. We want to create explosive plays and be an explosive offense. (We want to) attack defenses, and play the game offensively on our terms, and not be dictated to by what the defense is doing against us.”
WITH BRIAN KELLY’S arrival at LSU comes a new wave of excitement and optimism for the future of the football program.Hisresume speaks for itself, as he’s turned every school he’s coached into a proven winner. But how did he do it? What does a Brian Kelly-coached team look like on the field? We spoke with both new coordinators, as well as a handful of impact players ahead of the Tigers’ 2022 season to help paint the picture of what LSU fans can expect to see on Saturday nights.

THE OFFENSE UNDER MIKE DENBROCK
The Tigers averaged 254.5 passing yards and 114 rushing yards per game last season, compared to Denbrock’s offense at Cincinnati, which posted 241.2 passing and 173 rushing yards per“It’sgame.pretty simple,” wide receiver Jack Bech tells 225. “We’re trying to get the ball in the playmakers hands and let us do what we do best. We obviously have some really awesome concepts and different ways of getting different players into different situations. But it all just comes down to getting the ball in the playmakers hands.”
The saying is essentially an effort to establish a mentality for the style of defense House wants to implement at LSU—athletic, disruptive and a master ful grasp of the basics of football. “Number one: (We’re going to) be fundamentally sound,” House tells 225. “We’re going to be great tacklers. We’re going to strain to run to the football. We’re going to have the attack mentality and we’re going to play with great passion and energy.” House arrives at LSU after spending two seasons coaching line backers for the Kansas City Chiefs.Hehelped assemble a strong defense that won the Super Bowl in 2020 and received high praise from one former Tiger who was a member of that title-winning team. “I’m excited for coach House and all of Tiger Nation!,” former LSU star Tyrann Mathieu tweeted after the hire was announced. “This man loves football and teaching! One of the best I’ve been around. This Tiger defense will be well coached from day one! Let’s all buy in!!! FOREVER LSU!” House has a long coaching history which started at Michigan State in 2001 and has sent him to multiple stops at both the college and professional ranks. He’s coached the defensive line, lineback ers, and defensive backs and has also called defenses in the SEC, giving him a wellrounded background as he takes over LSU’s“Coachunit.House can coach anybody in any position, and all he tries to do is push your game to the next level,” says senior defensive end Ali Gaye. “He wants a lot out of us, and he challenges us to be the very best that we can be. His energy is just different. Even in the meeting room he’s so energetic, and that just gets everybody motivated and ready to go. It’s high intensity out there, and there are guys having the meanest mindset when we’re on the Positionally, field.”there is still a lot to be ironed out, particularly when it comes to the depth at linebacker and cornerback.ButHouse knows he has a loaded defensive line at his disposal, led by guys like Gaye, BJ Ojulari and rising sophomore star Maason Smith. “I really feel that we will be a very great defense,” Smith tells 225 “Everything that Coach House has done to this point has been a positive progression for our defense. I think the scheme that we run is good, and I think he holds us accountable. He’s just preaching competition. He doesn’t want anybody on the field who doesn’t know what they’re doing, so he preached (about) getting in the playbook and studying film and taking notes during film. He’s treating it like a league environment, because he just came from it, so his mind is still wired to the NFL. He’s teaching guys how to do it the right way before they even go to the league.”
And according to those players, Denbrock’s new system has felt like a relatively seamless transition of the offense. Concept-wise, it likely won’t look a whole lot different than the LSU attacks of recent years.

Honestly, I don’t know that I could have pointed to it with any speci ficity beyond the general West Africa region until a couple years ago.
It feels fitting that The Gambia is known as “The Smiling Coast.”

Flash forward 10 years later, and it would turn out to be one of the best decisions Gaye ever made.
“Soccer really helped me a lot with my footwork and how I’m able to move the way I move, even though I’m twice the size I was a few years ago,” Gaye tells 225. “I still love soccer to this day. It’s not as big here in the States, but I try to keep the love in me and play whenever I can.”
Those moments are likely few and far between now for Gaye, who has spent the past 10 years having to not only learn the game of football but also adapt to life in America.Hisfather, Omar, first arrived in the U.S. in 2007, but the rest of the family wouldn’t be able to follow until four years later when his mother, Afsatou Jallow, applied for asylum.Gaye, along with his parents and two siblings, settled in Lynnwood, Washington—a small suburb right outside Seattle that had a supportive Gambian community alreadyEnglishestablished.wasGaye’s second language, so while he was able to enroll in school and make new friends, some assignments and interactions came with an added layer of challenges. “It was definitely the biggest change in my life,” says Gaye, who now speaks four languages in total, including his parents’ dialects of Wolof and Fulani. “I was going from my hometown, where I spoke one language and coming here and having to learn a new language. Throughout my time here I had to learn and adapt and adjust to how different everything is from what I was used to. And I’m still adjusting. Every day I learn a new thing about being here, so I’m still in that learning process even though I’ve been here for a little Gaye naturally turned to athletics as an outlet when he arrived in America, initially taking up basketball his first year in middle By his eighth grade year, Gaye had begun to grow into his formidable frame and decided to join the football team. He didn’t know a ton about the game, but he was searching for new ways to stay active and involved in sports however he could.“Atthe school, soccer wasn’t really a program that was there,” Gaye says. “I had to find other ways to get active and get involved in sports. It was just me putting myself out there and trying new things.”

But Gaye didn’t always have this sizeable stature. He was “a lot shorter and a lot smaller” growing up, making him an agile, athletic soccer player.Heoccasionally played in the mid field but mostly featured as a defender, where he would—unknowingly— begin to lay his foundation for American football.

On paper, Gaye seemed to be picking up his newfound football fondness pretty quickly. His soccer background gave him nimble footwork, his basketball skills helped him develop better balance and quick hands, and an early high school growth spurt saw him add half a foot and half a hundred pounds to his body. Gaye would go on to become an All-Wesco 3A/2A South honoree three times in four seasons at Edmonds-Woodway High School, and he earned a three-star status according to most recruiting sites. He signed on to play football at the University of Washington in 2017, but he was ruled ineligible shortly after due to an insufficient SAT score. So Gaye once again had to leave the place he called home and relocate to a new environment, this time at Arizona Western in Yuma, Arizona. and LSU football Tiger

(I was) just learning the technique, trying to be a student of the game, and just trying to improve my mentality as much as possible towards the game.” While Gaye continued to grow in the sport, it didn’t take long for the football gods to throw yet another twist into his already winding journey. Just four days after its 2018 season finale, Arizona Western announced it would be discontinuing its football program. Gaye would once again be looking for a new home. Tom Minnick, who was the Matadors’ head coach while Gaye was there, took a new job at Garden City Community College in Kansas and convinced his budding pupil to follow suit. There, Gaye would continue to improve his game under a familiar coaching staff and wound up posting 44 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, one pass breakup and two blocked kicks. His performance earned him a spot on the 2019 All-Jayhawk League First Team, and 247Sports.com ranked him as the No. 2 strongside defensive end in Junior College in his class. Gaye turned the heads of a number of big-time college football programs, including Ed Orgeron and LSU, who would ultimately win his signature. “Ali was raw when he came here,” Orgeron said after Gaye’s first game for the Tigers, where he racked up three tackles, three pass breakups, 11 quarterback pressures and an additional nine hurries with one sack. “I think he is going to be a high pick, first-, second-, third-round pick. He’s going to play in the NFL. Hopefully he stays for two years. “Don’t get too good,” Orgeron finished with a smirk. Gaye didn’t listen.
EARNING HIS STRIPES Part of Orgeron’s wish did come true—Gaye stayed at LSU for two seasons and is now entering his third year as a Tiger, capitalizing on the additional year of eligibility granted from the COVID-19 pandemic. And as Orgeron’s aforementioned words indicate, Gaye didn’t take long to make his mark in Baton Rouge. He started all 10 games his first year at LSU, leading the team and ranking No. 6 in the SEC with 9.5 tackles for loss. He tallied a total of 32 tackles, two sacks, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery, while also either leading the team or being tied for the team lead with six pass breakups and five quarterback hurries. “I always try to be an energetic player,” says Gaye, who would go on to earn second-team All-SEC honors for his showing in 2020. “My mental ity and the way I perceive the game (has changed) ever since I came here. Another thing that’s improved is my technique and really being under coaches who know the game, who have studied the game and who are knowledgeable about the game.” Those improvements were on full display early in 2021 as well, where Gaye started the season with 19 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks while battling injury and playing in four of the first six games of the year. He would eventually be ruled out for the remainder of the season after re-aggravating an upper body injury against Kentucky—yet another hurdle attempting to stand in Gaye’s way. Despite some decent NFL draft outlooks, Gaye announced in January that he would return to LSU for one final run in the purple and gold. Along with the benefits an additional year of college will bring to both himself and LSU, Gaye’s decision to stay feels like a poetic ending to his amateur career. He had to leave Africa to seek asylum in Washington. He had to leave Washington to move to Arizona to begin his college football career.Hehad to leave Arizona for Kansas when his school shuttered its football program.Andhe had to leave Kansas to take a chance on Baton Rouge, Louisiana—4,916 miles from where his journey started. “This is home,” Gaye says. “Leaving would have been too soon. I felt like it was more meaningful for me to stay. Spending an extra year with these guys and the coaches in Baton Rouge, it’s been a humbling experience for me. I’ve been here for two years and I’ve been welcomed with open arms. So I didn’t want to leave early, because I haven’t scratched the surface of being an LSU Tiger.”

AFTER WITNESSING THE mesmerizing play of LSU’s Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Joe Burrow in 2019, Tiger fans have endured two frustrating seasons of injuries and inexperience at the game’s most important position. Myles Brennan started off the 2020 campaign strong, throwing for over 1,100 yards and 11 touchdowns in three games, before suffering a sea son-ending injury. The Tigers started two true freshmen the rest of the year. The injury bug bit Brennan again in 2021, when he suffered an off-thefield injury before LSU’s training camp. The Tigers utilized sophomore Max Johnson and freshman Garrett Nussmeier.Brennan returns to LSU for his sixth year, hoping to stay healthy and win back the quarterback job he briefly held two seasons ago. This year, however, Brennan faces a much more improved and experienced quarterback room. Along with Nussmeier and top recruit Walker Howard, a new challenger for the role of Tiger signal caller has emerged this offseason: Jayden Daniels. A three-year starter at Arizona State, Daniels arrives in Baton Rouge brandishing an impressive set of dual-threat quarterback skills. Last season, Daniels completed over 65% of his passes for more than 2,300 yards and 10 touchdowns, while rushing for more than 700 yards and six scores. While Brennan showcased his impressive arm strength and accuracy at the beginning of the 2020 season, most Tiger fans would not be fooled into thinking he’s fleet of foot. Brennan is a prototypical pocket passer, standing tall in the pocket, dissecting the defense with an array of strongDanielsthrows.ismade for the chaos of a play breaking down, making split-second decisions, thriving as the pocket collapses, and nimbly extending plays with his feet, either to

As a freshman at Arizona State, he won the starting job and never relinquished the reins for three years. “A quarterback competition is always good because it keeps every one on their toes, and you’re always going to get the best out of everybody each and every day,” Daniels says. A self-described “reserved kid,” Daniels exudes a subdued confi dence, evident by the command he exhibits on the field. “At the end of the day, I want to win,” Daniels says. “I don’t like to lose. That’s why I came here, because I know LSU fans don’t like to lose. They have high expectations set for the season. We want to do everything we can to accomplish them.”

The past two seasons, LSU has been forced to start multiple quarterbacks because of injury and youth. Regardless of who wins the starting job for the Tigers this fall, coach Kelly and Denbrock already have the upper hand on the most important aspect of the quarterback room: depth.
Toss in the two younger, inexperi enced LSU quarterbacks, and for the first time in several years, LSU has an intriguing quarterback battle for head coach Brian Kelly and offensive coor dinator Mike Denbrock to oversee. “Our offensive system is based off of how much the quarterback can han dle,” Denbrock explains. “We operate our best and at the highest level when the quarterback can kind of take the keys to the Ferrari and run with it. Whoever demonstrates throughout the course of fall camp that they can handle the job, not only physically but mentally, can give our offense that type of leadership. That type of competi tiveness that everybody looks for from a really good quarterback is going be key to us having success.”

Denbrock has four quarterbacks with varying levels of experience and a diversity of styles at his disposal and one major decision about who to hand the keys to this season. In Denbrock’s previous job as offensive coordinator at Cincinnati, he oversaw the development of quarterback Desmond Ridder, who emerged as one of the top dual-threat quarterbacks in the country the past two seasons. On the surface, Daniels’ skillset would appear to better fit the Ridder mold, but Denbrock and Kelly are in the enviable position of having multi ple choices at quarterback to incor porate into their offensive system.

Matt House, defensive coordinator The Tigers’ new defensive coordinator may not have been the flashiest name in the eyes of LSU fans, but anyone who comes with the amount of experience as House does—as well as a ringing endorsement from local legend Tyrann Mathieu—warrants some excitement. House has coached every position on the defensive side of the ball, both in the NFL and the SEC.
Frank Wilson, associate head coach/ running backs coach A familiar face is back in Baton Rouge. Wilson, who coached for the Tigers from 2010-2015, returns to his home-state school for a second stint after a pair of head coaching gigs at UTSA and McNeese State. The New Orleans native was one of the first hires of the Brian Kelly era, and he’ll be a pivotal piece to LSU’s in-state recruiting efforts.
Brian Kelly, head coach This is certainly stating the obvious, but no new arrival is bigger to LSU than Kelly’s. He brings with him one of the most impressive resumes in college football, lacking only a national championship. It’ll be fascinating to watch how he pieces together his program in pursuit of that prized possession.
Mike Denbrock, offensive coordinator Denbrock comes to Baton Rouge to reunite with Kelly after working with him from 2010-2016 at Notre Dame. LSU’s new playcaller most recently helped lead Cincinnati to its first ever College Football Playoff, and he’ll inherit a full cupboard of talent as he looks to repeat that same success in purple and gold.

Harold Perkins, linebacker Perkins will likely be the first member of this 2022 class to see the field for the Tigers. He leaves high school as the No. 9 recruit in the country, and 247sports.com has him rated the 16th best prospect LSU has ever landed. Perkins is originally from New Orleans but played high school ball at Cypress Park in Cypress, Texas, where he also featured as a running back. Will Campbell, offensive tackle It’s not often that true freshmen can crack the starting lineup on the offensive line, but Campbell will surely make a name for himself in Baton Rouge in due time. He was unanimously rated as one of the nation’s best offensive tackle prospects and already boasts an SEC frame, standing at 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds.
Quency Wiggins, defensive end Wiggins has already made waves in Baton Rouge, having helped lead Madison Prep to its first-ever football state championship in 2020. The 6-foot-5, 280-pounder will now head to LSU as one of the nation’s top defensive linemen and another top-100 ranked prospect in this 2022 signing class.
Walker Howard, quarterback Remember the name Walker Howard. He may not win the starting job his first year on campus, but he has all the makings to be the next great LSU quarterback. He led St. Thomas Moore (Lafayette) to back-to-back Division II state titles in 2019 and 2020, throwing for 3,430 yards and 42 touchdowns in his junior season. His dad, Jamie, was a signal-caller for the Tigers from 1992-95 and still ranks in the Top 10 in school history for passing yards (6,158), passing TDs (34), and total offense (6,010).

Joe Foucha and Greg Brooks Jr., defensive backs Foucha and Brooks both leave Arkansas to return to their home-state Tigers for their senior seasons. The defensive-back duo comes to LSU with a combined 64 starts under their belts, including 343 tackles, 8 sacks and 9 interceptions. Thanks in part in Foucha and Brooks, the Razorbacks gave up 24.0 points, 371.4 total yards and 215.1 pass yards per game last—all numbers better than the Tigers.
Jayden Daniels, quarterback It’s not an LSU preseason until there’s a quarterback controversy. Myles Brennan announced in late 2021 that he was returning to LSU for his senior season, and three months later Daniels decided to leave Arizona State to come to Baton Rouge, meaning the two will duke it out for the starting role. Daniels has thrown for more than 6,000 yards and 32 touchdowns as a Sun Devil, adding 1,288 rushing yards and 16 more touchdowns on the ground. Miles Frazier, offensive lineman More help on the offensive line is never going to be a bad thing, especially when it’s a linemen as talented as Frazier. The former Florida International standout chose LSU over schools like Ohio State, Florida State and Texas A&M, and could be an immediate contributor for the Tigers. Frazier, who checks in at 6-foot-5 and 304 pounds, played 648 snaps as a redshirt freshman for FIU.
“With Armoni being a speedster, Tre being a speedster, John having great all-around ability within the game, I can add a great piece to the puzzle to help the room get better,” Cain says. Cain believes his greatest strength as a running back to be his vision and feet, using those tools to make defenders miss and break tackles. As he gets ready for his first season donning an LSU uniform, he’s counting down the days until he gets the chance to take the field in Tiger Stadium. “I can’t even describe it,” Cain admits. “I can’t even picture it. I can’t wait for that moment to happen. I’m working every day towards it. I know when it happens, I’m going to be really excited, having chills walking down that hill. I’m excited to be able to put that purple and gold on. It’s going to be an incredible feeling.”

“LSU presented itself to me as an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, especially with the tradition they have at running back, let alone LSU being my dream school.”
THE NEW ERA of LSU football this fall includes more than just fresh faces on the coaching staff. With the advent of new transfer portal rules in college football, players face less obstacles switching teams during their career, and a slew of play ers from around the country are joining head coach Brian Kelly for his maiden voyage at the helm of the Tigers. One of Kelly’s biggest pickups this offseason is Baton Rouge native Noah Cain. The former Penn State running back returns home after spending three seasons with the Nittany Lions. “LSU presented itself to me as an opportunity I couldn’t pass up, especially with the tradition they have at running back, let alone LSU being my dream school,” Cain says. “It was a perfect situation to come into.”

Born in Baton Rouge, Cain moved to Dallas with his mother in 2006, but split time between the two cities to visit his father, who lives in Louisiana’s capital. Cain began his high school career in Texas before transferring to IMG Academy, the football powerhouse in Florida.Asafreshman at Penn State in 2019, Cain set the school freshman touchdown record with eight scores. His sophomore campaign was cut short when he was injured on the first drive of the season opener. Last season, Cain rushed for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns and caught 19 passes for over 110 yards. “I’m an all-around back, who can catch, block and run, who can contribute in all different phases of the game and can really have a positive impact on my team,” Cain says. Cain joins a group of LSU running backs without a clear, established bell cow.Senior John Emery Jr. is the presumptive leader to grab the bulk of the carries, but missed the entire 2021 season because of academic issues, and has yet to live up to the lofty expectations he arrived with out of high school. Sophomore Armoni Goodwin and junior Tre Bradford have shown flashes of potential, but they have yet to fully break out during their time in purple and gold. Having enjoyed success and faced adversity at his previous stop, Cain believes he will be able to complement his new running back teammates.

Your mouth matters. Most people will admit that they don’t take care of their teeth as well as they should. There are plenty of excuses why, but ultimately, your overall health is closely tied to your teeth. Your mouth is a primary entryway to the body, and poor oral health can have negative consequences for the entire body. Toothaches, gums that bleed, and stinky breath are all indicators of poor oral health. Bacteria from the mouth can easily get into the bloodstream and cause infection and inflammation wherever it spreads. A private, nonprofit Federally Qualified Health Center, CareSouth Medical and Dental provides comprehensive medical, dental and behavioral health services at its main location in Baton Rouge and in satellite clinics in Donaldsonville and Plaquemine. CareSouth Dentistry offers general dental services for the whole family to keep teeth and gums looking and feeling healthy. Having dental services within the walls of its clinics means patients receive continuity of care all under one roof. Here, CareSouth shares a few ways the health of your mouth, teeth and gums can affect your general health.
Simple steps to improve your health through daily oral hygiene: • Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time. Use a softbristled brush and fluoride toothpaste.
• Avoid tobacco use.
• Replace your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if bristles are splayed or worn.
Our vision of ourselves, how we are seen by others, and even our employment are influenced by our oral appearance. It’s okay if your teeth have seen better days— the dentists at CareSouth don’t judge ... they understand. Their concern is giving you back your smile.
• Community leaders participated in CareSouth’s National HIV Testing Day event. • Annual Juneteenth celebration gave the community free food, music by singer-guitarist Kenny Neal and the Neal Family, and COVID-19 vaccinations administered by CareSouth.
