recycling,” explains Baton Rouge Coca-Cola President Darian Chustz. Two years ago, the company’s leadership committed to environmental sustainability during the planning of their new building. They followed through by using recycled materials during construction and incorporating energy conservation initiatives wherever possible. The effort to be sustainable began with the building’s foundation. White concrete, which reflects solar energy and keeps surface temperatures cool, was mixed on site to reduce vehicle emissions. Asphalt was recycled from a local highway project. Foundation components like reinforcing steel, anchor bolts, metal studs and gypsum board all contain recycled content, with the building’s steel columns accounting for the largest amount of

recycled material onsite. (See graphic.) The ceiling, flooring and even the toilets and toilet room accessories are made of recycled matter. And an on-site recycling center is available for reclaiming plastic, cardboard, aluminum and shrink-wrap. To control indoor air quality and increase energy efficiency, elements like the carpet and wall paint contain very low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), exhaust fans keep workspace air clean, and electric lighting is controlled or reduced.
