The Association of Fundraising ProRolfe McCollister, Jr. fessionals’ Greater Baton Rouge Chapter hosted a luncheon Nov. 6 at the Renaissance Hotel to celebrate and honor local philanthropists. inRegister magazine, which features charitable events and philanthropic leaders throughout the year, was proud to again be a presenting sponsor for this event. The 2018 honorees are featured on page 6. We salute them and all of those individuals and companies in the Capital Region who give generously to help others and build a stronger community. GIVING GUIDE | 2018-2019
n less than one year, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital will open its doors to something amazing. Since early 2016 when we broke ground on our freestanding children’s hospital, incredible work has progressed on both our hospital and medical office building. In addition to the tremendous progress on the iconic structures, Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health has trained and added some of the best and brightest pediatric specialists to its team. These doctors are skilled in treating complex conditions including asthma and lung diseases, diabetes, cancer and blood borne illnesses, brain and neurodevelopmental conditions, bone and muscular disease, heart and vascular conditions, gastrointestinal conditions, and illnesses associated with compromised or weakened immune systems. With this hospital we can not only continue to focus our resources on children who need it most, we can broaden our team of specialists; further support our pediatric residency program and academic training for future Louisiana physicians; and provide access to highly specialized medical equipment. But most importantly, we can serve as an icon of hope and healing for Louisiana. We are excited to draw near to our ribbon cutting and look forward to an amazing celebration the weeks and months leading up to our doors opening. Join us as we build something amazing. letsbuildamazing.com

INTRODUCTION
2018 AFP Award Recipients
2017 NPD
A celebration of philanthropy PHILANTHROPY IS “the love of humankind,” and National Philanthropy Day® is the day that thousands of people around the world come together to both put that word into action and recognize the change that word has brought to our communities. NPD is a celebration of philanthropy—giving, volunteering and charitable engagement—that highlights the accomplishments, large and small, that philanthropy—and all those involved in the philanthropic process—brings to our society. Every year since 1986 when President Ronald Reagan first proclaimed Nov. 15 as National Philanthropy Day®, communities have celebrated by hosting events to recognize the activities of donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders and corporations engaged in philanthropy. While many people show interest in giving or getting involved, they often need a reminder about nonprofit needs and need to be inspired by stories of success. NPD spurs action by providing ways for people to connect with causes and each other—so they can be inspired by what others are doing and create their own ideas for philanthropic engagement. The Association of Fundraising Professionals is founder of the NPD movement, and we work with organizations that support philanthropy and charitable engagement. Since its inception in 1960, AFP has been helping nonprofits and charities and supporting fundraising efforts around the world that have generated more than $1 trillion. The Greater Baton Rouge Chapter of AFP has been in existence since 1989. Through the commitment of the AFP members, the chapter is flourishing today with more than 130 members serving in nonprofit development fields. The chapter celebrated its 28th National Philanthropy Day on Nov. 6. We honored those philanthropic individuals, businesses, foundations and families who have made an impact in our community. This year’s honorees are listed at right. The Greater Baton Rouge Chapter of AFP meets the second Tuesday of each month at Juban’s Restaurant. A mentoring session includes various topics and facilitators from 11 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. The luncheon program begins at 11:45 a.m. For more information, contact Chapter Administrator Tammy Abshire, CFRE, at (337) 501-5696 or at afpbatonrouge@gmail.com, or visit our website at afpbatonrouge.afpnet.org. 6

IN COLLEGE, Rick Jackson worked at the local YMCA, where it seemed they were constantly struggling for financial support. It was then that he began to understand nonprofit programs. “So many nonprofits provide incredibly valuable services to our communities and area children with little-to-no funding,” he says. “This is how my journey into helping the nonprofit world began.” Today Rick works for the LSU School of Social Work and at Red Stick Mental Health. His jobs afford him the opportunity to continue to serve the community—developing continuing education programs, seeing individuals and couples, and facilitating an LGBTQ Teen Therapy group. He previously worked for the Baton Rouge Crisis Center and was introduced to Youth Oasis and Diversity House. “I stay connected with both agencies, and I’m excited that BRCIC is taking their 48 years of experience in crisis and suicidology and opening a national training center,” Rick notes. Youth Oasis helps children who are runaways, abandoned, homeless and at-risk LGBTQ (youth 16-21). They always need financial support, items for children and the apartments, and people for their new mentorship program.

ACCORDING TO THE Centers for Disease Control, approximately 1 in 5 children in Louisiana has a mental, behavioral or developmental disability. As a nonprofit, outpatient, pediatric therapy clinic, McMains Children’s Developmental Center provides these children with the tools they need to reach their highest level of independence. GOALS OUR LOCAL SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL has served our community for 153 years. As always, our primary goals are to identify and respond to the needs of the poor and homeless. Every day, we seek and find the forgotten, the suffering and deprived. We achieve our goals through person-to-person contact, mass feeding, sheltering, prescription medicine services, and other programs, encompassing every form of aid that

alleviates suffering and promotes dignity and integrity. Our philosophy is to give a hand-up, not a hand-out, so that those served have the opportunity to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. This year, we expanded our Sweet Dreams Shelter capacity for homeless families from 36 to 82 beds. Your support of our efforts is more important than ever before!

CRIME STOPPERS IS a nonprofit organization formed in this community in 1982 to address the No. 1 concern, “Crime.” The program is based on the simple principle that for every crime committed someone other than the criminal has information that will solve it. There are two main problems which deter many citizens from calling the police: fear of retaliation and apathy. Baton Rouge Crime Stoppers solves both of these in that the program offers two important ingredients: anonymity and cash rewards. We are the only organization that can pay cash rewards anonymously. No court, no names, no ID.
FUNDRAISING/ EVENTS THERE ARE NO tax dollars; the Greater Baton Rouge Crime Stoppers organization is supported by several fundraising events: • Annual Crime Stoppers Law Enforcement Appreciation Awards Banquet, in which we recognize outstanding law enforcement officers or agents in their efforts in making our community a safer place for everyone. • Annual Crime Stoppers Golf Tournament—all funds go to paying of cash rewards and operational cost to the organization. THE GREATER BATON Rouge Crime Stoppers organization has paid out over $2,087,000 in cash rewards, all anonymously.
MISSION STATEMENT To develop Crime Stoppers as an effective crime solving and crime prevention organization with the primary objectives of this tri-partite organization (the community, the media, and law enforcement) being “Working together to prevent and solve crime.”

GIVE. DONATE. VOLUNTEER. THERE IS TREMENDOUS POWER IN GIVING. Your Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank is committed to the mission of feeding the hungry by providing food and educational outreach through faith-based and other community partners. In the 11 parishes we serve, more than 133,000 people (15.3% of the population) are food insecure. Food insecurity means that an individual does not know where or when they will find their next meal. Food-insecure households may not always be food insecure, but it may reflect a household’s need to decide between basic needs, such as housing or paying bills, and purchasing nutritionally adequate foods. You can make a difference in their lives by simply giving food, donating funds, or volunteering your time in service to others. Join us soon to learn more because Together We’re Fighting Hunger.

THE NATURE CONSERVANCY works around the world to protect important lands and waters for nature and people. For the Louisiana Chapter, this means rebuilding oyster reefs in Calcasieu Lake, protecting the critical habitat of the Atchafalaya basin, restoring longleaf pine forests, and much more across the state. Our many projects reflect the rich variety of land and water systems that support both people and nature. We want to conserve Louisiana’s freshwater, forests, and coasts, not just for their own sake, but for their ability to enrich our lives and fulfill our needs.
OUR DONORS AND partners are often invited to participate in field trips and volunteer events at our beautiful preserves throughout the state. There are opportunities to go on guided tours with our amazing ecologists, to explore the lands and waters, and to participate in activities like planting trees and bagging oyster shells for reef restoration. Many of our preserves—like Abita Creek, Cypress Island and Grand Isle—are open for the public to explore!

SINCE OPENING IN 1968, Woman’s has evolved to become so much more than a place focused only on delivering babies. The organization has made it a priority to address profound problems in the community that affect women and babies, including infant prematurity, care for sexual assault survivors, HIV/AIDS transmission prevention, access to cancer screenings and treatment, and much more. Woman’s community programs help to stop health care challenges from escalating into even larger long-term problems. Without continued support, these programs could be reduced in scope or eliminated due to Medicaid reductions and other financial challenges.
THE FOUNDATION FOR Woman’s holds several special fundraising events throughout the year. Take a swing against cancer at the Woman’s Victory Open, an all-female golf tournament, or bring home a piece of art from BUST Breast Cancer, a bra art fashion show.

Provide access to care in Baton Rouge—for many patients, getting to and from treatment is the greatest barrier in
beating the disease. Each year, an estimated 125,000 cancer patients need transportation services to keep their treatment appointments. That’s why “access to care” is an important initiative for the American Cancer Society of Baton Rouge, and much of the work that we do invests in it.
