Little donkey goes to school! Written by Laurence Fey Illustrated by Polly Dunbar
Every morning Desmond the donkey watched the children going to school. Every morning he said to his mum, “I wish I could go to school too!” But his mum said, “You’re a donkey, my darling. Donkeys don’t go to school!” 3
Desmond was happy being a donkey. He loved trotting around the fields, eating whenever he wanted and braying as loudly as he could! He loved it when the children stopped to say hello to him on their way to school. He liked them stroking the fur between his ears. But he so wished he could follow them to school.
4
5
One day, while his mum and dad were racing each other across the field, Desmond pushed his head through the fence.
He looked to the left and he looked to the right. Then he trotted up to the school. 6
7
Desmond climbed the school steps and knocked on the door with his hoof.
Knock knock knock!
“Come in! said the teacher.
8
9
10
Desmond went in. “Oh! A little donkey!” said the teacher. She didn’t seem at all surprised. “What can we do for you, sweetheart?”
11
Desmond gave a big smile. He put two hooves on the desk and looked into the teacher’s eyes. He said, “I know that school is for children. But I would love to go on the slide and play hide-and-seek and run around with my friends. Please, Miss, say yes…”
12
13
“Hmmmm…” said the teacher. “Do your parents know you are here? They don’t? Just as I thought! Well, I’ll take you back to your field and ask your parents what they think.
If they agree, I might let you come to school… But only once a week. How would that be?”
14
15
Desmond trotted happily back to his field. The teacher had a long talk with Desmond’s parents as she chewed on a blade of grass.
16
Desmond promised not to leave the field again without telling his parents and they agreed to let him go to school once a week.
17
The following week, Desmond arrived at school looking very smart. “This is Desmond,” said the teacher. “Let’s put his photo above his coat peg and find him a special overall for painting.” Soon Desmond had everything he needed.
18
19
Everyone enjoyed having Desmond at school. The children and the teacher loved him and even the cook made a special lunch that day with lots of vegetables.
Desmond was very happy to eat his food at the table under the trees. 20
He laughed loudly on the slide and played catch with his friends in the playground.
21
But the next week, there was another surprise.
knock, knock, knock!
Sandeep the sheep, Kia the calf, Drake the duck and Ruben the Rabbit all came knocking at the school door. “We want to come to school too! Please, Miss, say yes!” THE END

HOW DO WE
GROW?
Do we grow if we eat a lot?
LET’S GO AND SEE WHAT THE ANSWER COULD BE!
25
26
She is not a baby anymore! She is quite big!
This is Lily. She is 5 years old and 1.10m tall.
27
Lily measured 50cm at birth. Do you know how tall you were when you were born?
But how big was she when she was born?
LET’S GO AND FIND OUT HOW CHILDREN GROW!
Lily is quite tall now so she may grow to be over 1.65m when she is an adult.
Will she be tall when she grows up?
At the ends of each bone there are soft parts, called cartilage. It is the cartilage that grows. Then it hardens, turning into an extra bit of bone.
2.
But if bones are hard, how can they grow?
There are bones inside our body, under the skin and muscles. Bones are hard and they help us stand up straight. As our bones grow, our whole body gets bigger. In the picture, Lily’s bones have been drawn in.
1.
28
Is it only bones that grow?
Yes, we do! Everything we eat is broken into tiny pieces inside our tummy. These pieces all do different jobs. Some of them make our bones grow.
4.
So do we grow when we eat?
How does the cartilage grow?
Our body uses the food we eat to make cartilage grow. It is important to eat different kinds of food so that our body gets everything it needs to grow strong and healthy.
3.
NOW I UNDERSTAND! WE HAVE TO EAT A BIT OF EVERYTHING TO GROW WELL. OUR BODY GETS WHAT IT NEEDS FROM THE FOOD WE EAT SO THAT IT CAN MAKE EXTRA BONE, MUSCLES AND SKIN.

29
No. Our whole body grows at the same time. The food we eat makes our skin and muscles grow too.

SamSam is watching TV. SuperDuper is on. He is SamSam’s favourite hero.
The smallest of the big heroes
Go, SuperDuper!
SamSam can’t sleep
1
“Crunch… crunch…” SamSam is chomping through his third packet of biscuits.
“SamSam!” says SamMummy. “Stop stuffing yourself with biscuits and turn that TV off. It’s time for bed!”
Yummy… l love these!
3
2
Watching telly has made SamSam very excited. He is full of energy.
30
4
Look out! Yessss! You are the best!
He also ate too many biscuits. He brushes his teeth really hard…
5
But SamSam is wide awake. He wriggles around, turns over and over and sighs…
Then he jumps into bed. SamMummy kisses him good night and… Click! Lights out!
l can’t sleep!

6
SuperDuper says, “I will help you to get to sleep.” He gives SamSam a tiny stone that glows in the dark.
Suddenly, there is a bright light and SuperDuper appears in the room…
9
8
“Keep this moon stone in your hand and you will fall asleep,” says SuperDuper. Soon SamSam is fast asleep.
10
The next morning, SamSam wakes up and sees the little stone in his hand… “So I was not dreaming,” he says. “SuperDuper really did come and visit!”

Orcas
Orcas, also called killer whales, are the strongest animals living in the sea. Nothing scares them‌ not even sharks!
32
Where do they live?
In all the oceans of the world.
What do they eat?
Fish, birds, seals and even whales.
Interesting fact
Orcas are mammals like dolphins and other whales. They have to come up to the surface to breathe air. 33
Orcas live in a family group and they all hunt together. Today they are hunting seals.
The orcas arrive at a beach where seals are resting. They wait in the water, just under the surface. 34
Soon a seal makes its way into the water. An orca swims quickly towards it.
The orca moves so fast that it comes right up onto the sand.
It catches the seal in its mouth and drags it out to sea.
35
Then it whacks the seal with its tail and knocks it out.
© Bayard Presse – Youpi – August 1999. Text: E. Chanut. Illustrations: R. Orr.
The young orcas eat the seal, while the adults carry on hunting.
36
Then the orcas swim away. They play by jumping out of the water and splashing the surface with their tails. Orcas are not scared of anything. No other animals are strong enough to catch them.

Today is the first day back at school for all little witches and wizards. Zouk and her mum arrive on their broomsticks.
37
Zouk gives her mum a witch’s kiss and… Zoom… in she goes. “Hello, Mr Fishbone,” says Zouk to the head teacher.
“Put your broomstick in the rack. The bell is about to ring,” says Mr Fishbone.
DRRRIIIING! Zouk has to hurry. She does not want to be late. It is time for Mrs Gorgonzola’s magic spell lesson. She says, “Today we are going to learn a spell to make it rain.”
Say after me: Abracadabra cadee! Let it wet and soggy be!
38
Aaatishooo! Please, Miss, could we say the sunshine spell? I’m getting a cold!
Zouk’s favourite lesson is with Miss Casserole, the magic potion teacher. Miss Casserole says, “Today we are going to learn to make a potion for falling in love.”
those drops! Pumpkin tops, mouldy mops, stir
Miss Casserole dips her magic wand in the potion and says, “Two drops and you are in love! Who wants to be in love?” She flicks the potion at the children but they all run away.

Just then the door opens and Mr Fishbone comes in to see what is going on… Splat! Some drops of potion fall on him.
He immediately falls in love with Miss Casserole. He kneels at her feet and says, “My dear Casserole, my heart you stole! Marry me and make me whole!”
40
All the children go to the wedding. Zouk is the bridesmaid.
Miss Casserole and Mr Fishbone look very happy together and everyone claps and cheers!

Miss Casserole likes Mr Fishbone so she says, “I will marry you, Mr Fishbone! It will be bliss!” Then she gives him a kiss. “Hooray!” says Zouk. “Hoooray!” shout the children.
