Chirp’s Super Summer Fun Guide Find it on page 11

Super-Duper Summer Summer is my favourite season of all. I love crawling into my sleeping bag on a camp-out or jumping into a cool, blue pool. And I love listening to crickets chirp on warm August evenings. What do you like best about summer? If you love hitting the beach, turn to page 6 for a Look and Learn all about sand, waves and beach animals. Then turn to page 11 for Chirp’s Super Summer Fun Guide. It’s jammed with crafts, games and recipes to fill your summer days. Have a super summer, everyone!

Be careful not to touch Jellyfish. They sting their prey before they eat it, but their stings can hurt people, too. Hermit crabs move into shells that other creatures leave behind.

Most sea stars have five arms with a tiny eye on the end of each arm.

2013-05-10 3:47 PM

Seagulls fly over beaches looking for tasty treats, like fish, clams and crabs.

It’s fun to look at sea animals, but remember not to touch them or take them away from the beach.

As the wind blows over an ocean or lake, it pushes the water, making waves. Plants and algae (say: AL-Jee) that grow in the water are called seaweed.

Some sea creatures live in hard seashells, which protect their soft bodies from enemies.

ChirpSum13- 06-07 L&L.indd 7

The next time you visit a beach, look closely at the sand. Pounding waves grind rocks, coral and seashells into teeny, tiny pieces, making sand. What colour are the tiny rock pieces? Are they different sizes or all the same?

Written and illustrated by Rebecca Bender

Every morning, as the summer Sun rose over Ribbit Pond, all the frogs raced to get a good lily pad for the day. One lily pad was every frog’s favourite. It got the perfect amount of sunshine and tons of bug traffic. YUM!

ChirpSum13- 24-27 Fiction.indd 24

Sunny was never fast enough to get any lily pad, let alone the best one. Jumping and swimming were not his specialty. His legs were too scrawny. That’s why Sunny spent his days with the leeches in the slimy, boggy water. YUCK!

2013-05-10 4:03 PM

Few frogs ever noticed Sunny there and no one ever offered to share a lily pad. On a morning like any other, Sunny slogged over to mope in his usual soggy spot. But when he got there, he found a big branch blocking his way. The branch had fallen and was sticking out of the mud, right in Sunny’s spot. Sunny poked it. He pushed it. He leaned on it with all his weight. But the branch didn’t budge. “Great. Now I have to share my spot with a stick-in-the-mud!”

Sunny gazed at the sky. A large blackbird flew down and landed on the stick. The stick bent over and nearly touched the mud with its leaves. When the bird flew off, the stick bounced back with a SPPRROOOUUUUNNGGGG! Sunny hopped with excitement. He had an idea! 25

ChirpSum13- 24-27 Fiction.indd 25

2013-05-10 4:03 PM

Sunny got to work right away. He didn’t even stop for a bug break. By evening he was tired, but his invention was ready. The next morning, the Sun peeked over the horizon and sparkled on Ribbit Pond once again. As the frogs started their race, Sunny hopped over to his invention and climbed on. 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! He released the trigger and… “YAAAHHHOOOOOOOO!”

Sunny soared through the air like a bird! He landed on the best lily pad in Ribbit Pond. Except he wasn’t the first to arrive. Sunny had landed on Big Frog, the biggest bullfrog in the pond. Sunny looked down at Big Frog in fright. Big Frog looked up at Sunny.

26

ChirpSum13- 24-27 Fiction.indd 26

2013-05-10 4:03 PM

“Woooaaa,” said Big Frog. “That’s the biggest leap I’ve ever seen! How did you do that? Say, while you’re up there sitting on my head, see if you can grab a horsefly. I can never reach them.” Horseflies were Sunny’s favourite. They were the juiciest flies of all. Sunny snatched a horsefly with his sticky tongue and passed it down to Big Frog. Sunny and Big Frog worked together and caught way more flies than they ever could by themselves.

From then on, the frogs of Ribbit Pond shared their lily pads, and no one had to spend time in the slimy, boggy water with the leeches. Except when they wanted to leap and soar across the water with the FROG LAUNCH-O-MATIC.
