More than just breath-taking sceneries and vibrant cities

Bavaria is more diverse than any other German state, exemplified by its many interesting inhabitants, all of which have exciting stories to tell. There are the Local traditionalists – villagers who reflect the typical lifestyle of rural Bavaria, creating the traditional Bavarian village of our imagination. Bavarians who are Refining tradition show how the young generation is re-interpreting products and production methods, while still remaining true to their roots. Young and wild, the Bavarian Free spirits are closely attached to their homeland, they are forging new paths and combining ancient customs with the latest trends and a clear sense of individuality. Local dishes and delicacies along with the beer and wine culture are all celebrated under the heading Purely a matter of taste. The places to be are another key part of the Bavarian story,

Bavaria – traditionally different Lüftlmaler, Goaßlschnalzen, Rauhnächte: ever heard of these? No? Then it is time you came to Bavaria! Traditions are not just practised here; they are also shared with visitors. After all, there is a lot of creativity at play here. And that may well be the secret behind the Bavarian customs, which are very much alive: each generation

interprets them slightly differently, without losing sight of their origins. This is what makes Bavaria so different with respect to its traditions. You can find exciting stories to inspire your journey to Bavaria at: www.bavaria.by/traditionally-different

with celebrations such as Almabtriebe (cattle drives), Krampusläufe (Krampus runs) or Kirchweihen (parish fairs) all helping to shape its quintessential image. Bavaria offers a whole host of special City attractions too: Some of these, such as the Viktualienmarkt in Munich or the Bieramt in Nuremberg, have unique histories dating back centuries. The wonderful Cultural landscapes of Bavaria are totally unmistakable. Places like the Partnachklamm gorge in Upper Bavaria or the Nördlinger Ries crater have influenced their surroundings and the people who live there. Bavaria is wonderfully diverse in its cities and its countryside, in its traditions and its way of life. Experience Bavaria in all its richness!

The historical kiln hall of the Freiherr von Poschinger Glassworks paves the way to centuries-old glass-making traditions. All visitors may try their hand at glass-blowing during the tours through the wheelchair-friendly factory.

Never-ending forests, sublime mountains which are at least 1000m high, old glass craftsmanship and air so good it is really worth taking a deep breath - these qualities are what makes a holiday in the region at the foot of the Großer Arber so very unique. The ARBERLAND is defined by Bavarian culture and unspoilt nature. The distinctive character of the region is shaped by extraordinary phenomena: impressive waterfalls, moors, lakes embedded in cirques in the ice age, and the primeval forest. In the ARBERLAND, visitors will be treated to an incomparable long-distance view of the Bohemian Forest and the Bavarian Forest.

The “Culinary display window – delicacies from the region” is an excellent place for discovering regional culinary specialities from the ARBERLAND and sampling delicious little treats yourself in the delicacies snack bar.

From the highest mountain of the Bavarian Forest, the Großer Arber, visitors can enjoy a view of the whole of the Bavarian and the Bohemian Forest. Access to the Arber mountain railway and the panorama lift is also easy for people with wheelchairs, prams or walking frames. This enables the whole family to experience the joy of getting to the top. National park experience

People and the forest

Hiking through nature and time

The Lusen National Park Centre with an exhibition and information in the HansEisenmann-Haus is the first port of call for all visitors to the national park. In the area around the centre, a circular trail, which is suitable for wheelchair users and has touchable wooden guide signs for visually impaired people, takes you through the flora of the national park. In the outdoor area for animals, visitors can go along permanent trails with a slight incline to find out about 35 species living in the forests, their habitats and their way of life. The tree top path offers a magnificent view from its 40 m high platform. It can be accessed via a lift.

Wild nature has found a home again in the heart of Europe: the forest in the national park can develop freely and unaffected by external influences and shows the transience, creativity and autonomy of nature. Nevertheless, in the first German national park, the National Park Bavarian Forest, and its holiday region, you can experience nature at first hand, perceive it with all your senses and immerse yourself in it in a relaxed way: convenient board walks, plants for smelling and tasting, and outdoor areas for animals which can be viewed easily from every observing distance are just a few examples of how the wild forest can be experienced by anyone here.

Bavarian Forest National Park www.nationalparkbayerischer-wald.de

People’s lives in the Bohemian Forest right on the border to the Czech Republic have been characterised by meagre conditions since time immemorial. The Frauenau Glass Museum and the Falkenstein National Park Centre provide insights into the relationship between people and the forest, which has always been more than just a supplier of the raw material wood. Here, the Stone Age cave is completely accessible for wheelchair users and prams. It invites you to take a journey through prehistoric times, when wild horses, reindeer and aurochs, rather than people, shaped the landscape. Frauenau Glass Museum www.glasmuseumfrauenau.de

The history of the Bavarian Forest comes to life in the Finsterau Open-Air Museum. The exhibition area, restaurant and café, activities and tours through the historical buildings are designed to be accessible. A tour through the lower level is made possible by ramps and platforms. This will give you an impression of everyday working life in the Bavarian Forest 200 years ago. A highlight for hikers is the nearby, cross-border hiking area “Paths Through Nature and Time”. Several kilometres of carefully-marked hiking trails lead through the impressive forest wilderness of the Bavarian Forest National Park.

Never-ending forests, crystal clear streams - pure unadulterated nature which can develop into a unique wilderness in the Bavarian Forest National Park. In the Nationalpark FerienLand Bayerischer Wald you will discover a breath-taking scenery and a beautiful location where Germany meets Austria and the Czech Republic, including excursion possibilities without any borders.

The Ilz valley impresses visitors with its wealth of nature, consisting of sparse alluvial forests, meadows and imposing rocks. The route along the Ilz, the last big white water river in eastern Bavaria, does not have any inclines, can be navigated easily with a wheelchair and is an absolute must for all nature lovers. The Celtic Village of Gabreta provides insight into life in the past and lets you experience history hands-on. A mobile swimming pool lift makes it easy for you to get into the swimming pools. Literature enthusiasts should definitely visit the “Stifter and the Forest” Museum on the Rosenberg Estate. Cosmopolitanism and pride, trends and traditions, the maypole and modernity: many contrasts cancel each other out under Munich’s blue and white sky. In the streets and parks, a distinctive lifestyle takes centre stage: a city full of contrasts that wants to tempt you to engage with life to the full – with beer gardens and the Blue Rider movement in the Lenbachhaus, the Oktoberfest and the Opera House. Whether as a sun worshipper in front of the Glyptothek or as an observer of the surfers in the Eisbach, whether you enjoy attending the Christmas market, the city foundation festival or a football game in the Allianz Arena: in this metropolis on the River Isar, you can experience everything from culture and culinary treats to nature.

A visit to the GOP Varieté Theatre in Maximilianstrasse entices visitors into a fascinating world between avant-garde and tradition. Impressive artistry in an atmospheric ambience and culinary delights guarantee that you will have a very special experience. There is also an almost 300 m long, paved nature discovery trail through the forest. It is recommended that every disabled visitor brings a companion with them. Parking spaces are available right by the entrance (on request).

Life-size replicas of, for example, a tyrannosaurus rex, an allosaurus and a mammoth await young and old visitors in the open-air dinosaur museum in the heart of the Altmühl valley in Bavaria. The entire facility is accessible for wheelchair users. 230 million years of evolution can be discovered on a two kilometre circular trail.

In the “Steigerwald tree top path”, south of Würzburg, the trees are within reach of the visitors on the path. Over a length of 1,150 m, the forest habitat can be discovered from a completely different perspective. Information boards along the route raise awareness of the integrated forestry. The entire path is easily navigable on foot and by wheelchair. Longer inclines of max. 6% are repeatedly broken up by flat sections.

Wheelchair users get free access to the gardens. The private estate is located east of the Romantic Road.

In a farm holiday in Bavaria, guests immerse themselves in actively practised agriculture. On www. bauernhof-urlaub.com under “Accommodation”, there is information on barrier-free providers. For example, the Meisterbauerhof (www.meisterbauer. de) invites guests seeking relaxation into its wheelchair-friendly holiday home for an authentic nature adventure holiday in the Berchtesgaden region.

Be at one with nature – you can do this when camping in Bavaria. You can find information about camping with a disability at www. camping-in-bayern.de. One example of this is the spacious “Via Claudia Camping” campsite by the emerald green Lake Lechsee (www.camping-lechbruck.de). The site has disabled toilets.

One such example is the Biohotel Eggensberger**** (www.eggensberger.de) by Lake Hopfensee near Füssen in the Allgäu: access to the public areas, such as the restaurant, the spa area and the physiotherapy centre, is on ground level, and the rooms can be reached by the lift. In the indoor pool, there is a disabled WC. Bayerischer Hotel- und Gaststättenverband DEHOGA Bayern e. V. Tel.: +49 (0)89 287600 www.dehoga-bayern.de

The inclusion of guests with restricted mobility is particularly important to DEHOGA Bayern, the trade association of the Bavarian hotel and catering industry. Whether you are staying by a lake, in a metropolis or in a small town – many Bavarian hotels and restaurants have already adapted to the requirements of their guests with respect to their accessibility.

Youth hostels for all Castle atmosphere, metropolis room or mountain panorama – the Bavarian youth hostels provide inexpensive accommodation options for any age in excellent locations. You can find detailed information on the services for disabled people in the youth hostels at www. reisen-fuer-alle.jugendherbergen-bayern.de.

Nuremberg Youth Hostel (www.nuernberg.jugendherberge.de) in the historic castle complex can, for example, be reached via a ground level entrance and two lifts. Two disabled toilets and two rooms equipped for wheelchair users are available.
