Mountain experience in the southernmost holiday resort in Germany

The southernmost holiday resort in Germany, Oberstdorf, is situated in an idyllic location in a valley basin at 815 m above sea level. Oberstdorf can be experienced at all altitudes. The internationally renowned winter sports resort is home to one of the world’s five biggest ski jumping hills and is a venue for ski sport events which are famous throughout the world. In the summer, a varied network of hiking trails extends over 200 kilometres and three altitudes. Taking a deep breath here is healthy, as Oberstdorf bears the titles “Climatic health resort – premium class” and “Kneipp health resort”.

Guests visiting the Erdinger Arena feel like ski jumpers. Here, visitors will find one of the world’s most beautiful and modern ski-jumping stadiums. Getting up to the ski jumping tower, from which the ski jumpers do their first jump in the Four Hills Tournament in December, is effortless thanks to an inclined lift. Then you continue with the lift to the jumping tower for the panorama platform, which offers a wonderful view of Oberstdorf and the surrounding mountain scenery.

With the Nebelhorn and Fellhorn mountain railways you can reach an altitude of more than 2,000 m above sea level. The panoramic view of 400 summits from the Nebelhorn is breath-taking. A wheelchairfriendly panoramic trail takes you past an impressive lookout point. On the summit, it is primarily the sun terraces with wide entrances and wonderful lookout points, which make the mountain experience so unique. The hiking region around Oberstdorf is regarded as the largest on the northern edge of the Alps. A variety of suggestions for hikes are summarised in a wheelchair hiking map and lead through side valleys and the vast meadows around Oberstdorf. The map can be obtained from the Hotel Viktoria in Rubi and from the tourist information offices. Alternatively, special e-bikes can be hired, allowing holidaymakers with different ability levels to enjoy cycling together. The rest points located in charming surroundings invite visitors to experience new culinary delights.

In the ruins of Altenstein Castle, which was once owned by the noble family Stein zu Altenstein, adults and children alike can immerse themselves in the Middle Ages at various interactive stations. Life and everyday activities in a medieval castle come to life in the Altenstein Castle Information Centre, which is accessible for wheelchair users. An adventure app (www.burgenwinkel-abenteuer.de) helps with this. You can follow in the footsteps of the Celts in the Archaeological Museum in Bad Königshofen, which is accessible at ground level. The adjoining Border Crossers Museum resurrects the time of the zonal border to the GDR.

The Abt-Degen-Steig (Abbot Degen Climb) is located on the southern slopes of the Hassberge hills. A trip into the history of wine follows the trail of the Silvaner pioneer. Close-by, the Sandstein-Kreuzweg (Sandstone Stations of the Cross) with depictions of scenes and figures is located. This is what a visit to one of the five largest private car museums in Germany promises: the Fichtelberg Car Museum presents rare items which are more than a century old. The history of the Bavarian Forest comes to life in the Finsterau Open-Air Museum. The exhibition area, restaurant and café, activities and tours through the historical buildings are designed to be accessible. A tour through the lower level is made possible by ramps and platforms. This will give you an impression of everyday working life in the Bavarian Forest 200 years ago. A highlight for hikers is the nearby, cross-border hiking area “Paths Through Nature and Time”. Several kilometres of carefully-marked hiking trails lead through the impressive forest wilderness of the Bavarian Forest National Park.

The Lusen National Park Centre with an exhibition and information in the HansEisenmann-Haus is the first port of call for all visitors to the national park. In the area around the centre, a circular trail, which is suitable for wheelchair users and has touchable wooden guide signs for visually impaired people, takes you through the flora of the national park. In the outdoor area for animals, visitors can go along permanent trails with a slight incline to find out about 35 species living in the forests, their habitats and their way of life. The tree top path offers a magnificent view from its 40 m high platform. It can be accessed via a lift.

A trip up one of the most beautiful panoramic mountains in the Alps is a must: up the Wendelstein. Anyone who does not ride up by the cog railway from Brannenberg can take the Wendelstein cable car from Osterhofen near Bayrischzell. A ramp makes it easier to get into the cable car, where the trip is an experience in itself. When you reach the top, you will be met by spectacular views as far as Munich and far into the Alps.

In the “Steigerwald tree top path”, south of Würzburg, the trees are within reach of the visitors on the path. Over a length of 1,150 m, the forest habitat can be discovered from a completely different perspective. Information boards along the route raise awareness of the integrated forestry. The entire path is easily navigable on foot and by wheelchair. Longer inclines of max. 6% are repeatedly broken up by flat sections.

The lift takes you 40 m up into the lofty heights of the “skywalk allgäu” in Scheidegg with its magnificent view of Lake Constance, the Alps and the Alpine foothills.
