Common phrases such as “no pain, no gain” and “feel the burn” have us believing that it is completely normal, and somewhat expected, to experience pain and discomfort when exercising. While slight pain and discomfort during and slightly after exercising is normal and often a good sign, you should not be experiencing extreme muscle soreness or joint pain or any type of pain that lasts for hours or even days.
Experiencing extreme muscle soreness after workout sessions can be avoided. Learn more about how pain and exercise are related, how to relieve sore muscles after workout sessions, and discover some things you can do to prevent muscle and joint pain.
To determine if sore muscles after exercising is a good sign or a bad sign, you must consider two factors: severity of the pain and how long the soreness lasts.
Minor muscle soreness while working out is a good sign. It indicates that the muscles in your body are getting stronger. This “good pain” should be extremely minor and it should only occur while you are working out and for a very brief period after you have finished exercising. If the pain interferes with your regular daily activities or it lasts for several hours or even days, it is no longer considered “good pain” and is instead considered “bad pain”. At no time, during, or after workout sessions, should you experience any type of extreme muscle soreness. In addition to muscle soreness, you should also not experience any type of joint pain or discomfort.
Pain, either of the muscles or the joints, that occurs after your exercise is often caused by inflammation. There are several reasons why the muscles and joints in the body become inflamed after exercising. Some of the reasons why you may be experiencing moderate to extreme muscle soreness and joint pain after exercise include:
*Overtraining
*Not properly warming up before exercising
*Performing exercises or movements that your body is unprepared to do
*Failing to allow the body proper time to heal before working out again
*Not working out regularly – prolonged periods in between workout sessions can cause the muscles in the body to weaken. When you do exercise again, the muscles will need to build up strength which results in you experiencing pain and discomfort.
*Underlying health problems or conditions such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis
To avoid extreme muscle soreness and joint pain you have to think of exercising as a process and not a single activity. When you think of it as a process, you are encouraged to look beyond the activities and movements and instead focus on what you are doing before, during, and after your exercise session. By focusing on what you are doing before, during, and after, you can make sure you are doing specific things that help to prevent muscle soreness and joint pain.
Some of the things that you can do before, during, and after exercise to help you avoid extreme muscle soreness and joint pain include:
*Staying properly hydrated – with proper hydration your body will be able to fight off inflammation. Proper hydration will also help your muscles get the essential nutrients they need to properly heal after exercising.
*Carefully plan out your exercise routine – try to mix up your exercise routine. For example, one day work on core strengthening and the next day work on arms or legs. By mixing up your routine, you give the muscles in your body time to rest and heal. This can help you to avoid feeling any soreness or pain.
*Properly warm-up before exercising – immediately jumping in and performing strenuous or vigorous exercises can be stressful to the body. Warming up reduces the amount of stress your body experiences by preparing the muscles and joints for exercise.
*Alternate between intense and light workouts – after an intense workout, your body needs time to rest and heal. That doesn’t mean you should avoid all exercise. Instead, do a lighter workout next such as yoga or stretching.
*Massage the muscles after a workout – gently massage the muscles either by hand or with a foam roller after a workout
*Maintain a proper diet that is rich in vitamins and minerals
*Get the proper amount of sleep
*Focus on practicing good technique while exercising – if you aren’t properly performing a specific move or activity you could strain the muscles which will result in pain and discomfort
*Take a turmeric supplement to help the body naturally fight against inflammation
Sometimes no matter how hard you try to avoid muscle soreness and joint pain after exercising, it still happens. If you happen to experience moderate to extreme muscle soreness or joint pain after working out, you can try the following things:
*Rest – if you experience extreme muscle soreness or joint pain it signals that you have overworked the body. Cut back on the intensity of your workout until the pain and discomfort have gone away.
*Apply ice - the cold from the ice reduces inflammation and helps reduce pain and discomfort
*Take an Epson salt bath – Epson salt helps encourage the muscles in the body to relax
*Take a natural supplement that has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant qualities
Taking a natural turmeric supplement daily can help you find relief for joint pain especially if it occurs after exercising. A turmeric supplement, like Nuvothera’s SuperMicronized Turmeric Curcumin, provides you with relief from muscle soreness and joint pain by working as a natural anti-inflammatory. It all started with a simple patio addition. Chad Bridwell of Kemah, Texas worked devoutly for local home builders in the Clear Lake area.
One day he was approached by a client he was building a home for who asked if he had any recommendations for local companies that specialized in patio additions. From that one inquiry, the seed was planted and Chad’s ambitions took root.
Chad grew up in Spring, Texas raised by his mama, granny, and aunt. His grandfather was a strong-willed and determined entrepreneur dabbling in everything from bee-keeping to HVAC work. He never imagined he would end up in construction, but his grandfather was his role model. He knew one day he would want to run a company just like his Papa - but what and where, he was unsure.
In 2001, tragedy struck our nation when the twin towers were demolished along with thousands of American lives. Chad felt the urge, like several hundred souls in our nation, to take a stand and join our forces to help protect American families and the soil they call home. By 17, he was making his way to bootcamp to serve for the United States Navy. Quickly, Chad was overseas aboard the USS Bataan – one of the “Big 5” wasp-class amphibious assault ships. Five years later, Chad felt it was time to take the opportunity to leave his military career behind and join his one-year-old son back home
obstacles and found himself in a career working for a Houston area home builder. He thrived in this environment and quickly started moving up the ranks to project manager and lead positions. It was the perfect time to welcome his beautiful baby girl into the world.
Chad continued to expand his construction knowledge and absorb anything and everything going on around him. Production times were up, and costs were at a low. He was astounding in his position, but he knew deep down that he still wanted more growth for himself.
That one inquiry over a decade ago ignited Chad’s entrepreneurial flame. He knew this was his chance to really set goals and challenge himself. The road to small-business owning is not for the faint of heart. It has its moments of despair, of questioning, of obstacles that seem impossible to overcome, but Chad faced it with resilience, and continues to look opposition right in the eyes to greet it with tenacity, perseverance, and unwavering empathy.
After a decade of owning and operating Outside Oasis and building patios, pergolas, fire features and more, Chad decided that 2022 was the year to reignite that flame and once more challenge himself. Outside Oasis was thriving in the Clear Lake area since 2011, but he felt that the community needed something more from him and the outdoor living business. The lightbulb once
By August of 2022, the League City area had their own outdoor living showroom and design center - a place where clients would feel secure and at ease with their backyard investments. Chad’s vision was to create a space where homeowners can visualize what their backyard ideas could look like and he certainly delivered!
The showroom features 4 different patio builds with accommodating masonry and lighting features, an outdoor fireplace and firepit, and hardscaping options, with an outdoor kitchen model forthcoming. The store has also partnered with paving, tiling, and concrete vendors to bring clientele designing options that they can put their eye on. In addition to construction, the showroom is immersed with locally sourced patio décor and furniture for those wanting to go beyond constructing their dream backyards.
While Chad surrounds himself in his work, he finds free time to kick back and relax. Whether it’s grabbing a few pounds of crawfish at his favorite seafood joint, taking his two children to leap through the Galveston waves, or relaxing at home with his fur baby by his side catching up on his favorite Netflix shows, Chad finds time to take a break from the stresses of business ownership. Chad and his teammates at Outside Oasis welcome all who want to spice up their outdoor living space and look forward to continue working with the Clear Lake area.

We're moving into the time of year when some big fish are caught. There's already been a number of big black bass taken from lakes around Texas, especially O. H. Ivie. With that said, just recently, a large, speckled, trout was landed in west Galveston Bay, and there's been some reports of other big fish caught down the coast. Which brings me to the question, "Can the current Texas Speckled Trout Record ever be broken?"
According to Texas Catch Records, the state record trout is 15.60 pounds and 37.25 inches, caught by Carl Rowland fly fishing. The fish was
measured and weighed in the boat, on the water, was photographed and released. Until then, the record was held by the late Jim Wallace, who caught a the fish on conventional tackle, using a Corky lure. Wallace took the fish into a local marina where it was weighted on certified scales in front of other anglers not fishing with him as witnesses. Wallace's fish weighed 13.69 pounds.
Now, lets say your fishing a bay, and on that day you land a speckled trout measuring 34 inches. You then take the fish in to be weighted on a certified scale and it ends up weighing 14 pounds. A great fish but not a record. How would you feel?
I presented this scenario to Capt. Mike Williams who has pursued trophy trout for a number of years. He replied, "Highly disappointed."
I would agree, considering the fish was weighted on a certified scale in front of other witnesses besides those who fished with you. Williams believes the current record speckled trout should be listed in the Texas Saltwater Fly Fishing Records only, not in the conventional (rod and reel) records for the state. I agree with Williams 100 percent.
Rowland's record catch on a fly will be tough to beat. Wallace's record fish on rod and reel can be beat. In my mind, Wallace's fish is the state record trout on documentation alone. I wish Texas Parks and Wildlife would amend the record book and place Wallace's fish back on top in the Saltwater Rod and Reel category. Not just for the record to be broken, but the late Jim Wallace deserves the title as Current Speckled Trout Record Holder on Rod and Reel.
Two aerospace firms in the process of building facilities at the Houston Spaceport – Axiom Space and Collins Aerospace – are busy also working on contracts awarded by NASA to develop new spacesuits. Axiom, which is in the process of building its headquarters at the Spaceport, and Collins, which is building a manufacturing facility there, along with a startup incubator, will compete for orders under the Exploration Extravehicular Activity Services (xEVAS) contract which has a maximum value of $3.5 billion through 2034.
The spacesuits will be for crews on the International Space Station, Artemis journeys and future missions to Mars. Collins said its new suits, which were designed by astronauts, are lighter and more adaptable and will allow for increased activities.
“With these awards, NASA and our partners will develop advanced, reliable spacesuits that allow humans to explore the cosmos unlike ever before,” NASA’s Johnson Space Center Director Vanessa Wyche said. “By partnering with industry, we are efficiently advancing the necessary technology to keep Americans on a path of successful discovery on the International Space Station and as we set our sights on exploring the lunar surface.”
Both Axiom and Collins plan to have their suits ready by 2025, and the contract will last until 2034. But first, the companies must develop a suit and have it certified by NASA for either use on the ISS or the Artemis III mission, after a required real-world test either on the ground or in space.
“We are immensely pleased that NASA recognizes the value Axiom Space is providing across a range of human spaceflight activities, from our recent private astronaut mission to the ISS to the design and development of Axiom Station, and now to providing this critical system and associated services for astronauts in LEO [low Earth Orbit] and beyond,” Axiom Space President and CEO Michael Suffredini said.
Collins is a subsidiary of Raytheon Technologies headquartered in Charlotte, N.C., that is one of the world's largest suppliers of aerospace and defense products. It will be responsible for the design, development, qualification, certification, and production of its station spacesuits and support equipment to meet NASA’s key requirements. In the past, Collins has worked on both the Space Shuttle and ISS EVA suits that have served NASA well for almost 40 years but are starting to show their age. Collins also brings ILC Dover to the team to work on the xEVAS contract. ILC Dover contributed to making the suits worn by Apollo astronauts on the Moon.
“Collins was there when the first man walked on the moon, and we’ll be there when humankind goes back,” Collins Mission Systems President Phil Jasper said.
The Houston Spaceport is located 20 miles south of Downtown Houston at Ellington Airport and describes itself as the world’s first truly urban commercial spaceport. The Houston Airport System is building the spaceport in phases collaborating with private sector tenants. Houston is home to 500 companies and institutions involved in aircraft or space vehicle manufacturing, research and technology, making the city an ideal site for aerospace and aviation companies to build or expand operations.
Have you ever played a trivia game? It used to be on cards that you would ask one another. Recently we played a trivia game that involved multi-media. For bonus points the game played song lyrics and you had to guess the musician and song title.
The first song came on and I knew it instantly because I was a city boy who grew up in south Detroit in the 1980’s. This song was our theme song! Do you know it yet? Maybe you were a small-town girl and didn’t get out much until you took the midnight train? Wherever you were and whether or not you were alive in the 1980’s you probably have heard at some time the song by the rock band, Journey, called, “Don’t Stop Believin’.”
Every one of us is on a journey because life just that – a journey. The big challenge is that the journey can cause you to stop believin’ in so many things. The big question is where is your journey going? Yes, you can aimlessly walk through life, but do you know the number one question of people who are in their 20’s or their 80’s ask? In my experience as a pastor, many people in these two very different age groups ask the very same question - “What’s my purpose in life?”
There is one person who has lived this journey of life who knew his purpose and knew how to live his purpose. He was a small-town boy from Nazareth who journeyed throughout the land of Israel all the way to the big city of Jerusalem. He fulfilled his purpose by carrying his cross down the boulevard all the way to Calvary. There he gave his life while soldiers rolled dice and others sung the blues. It was there that he fulfilled his purpose. You know it from John 3:16. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, Jesus, that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life.”
If you are not sure where your journey is leading you, if you are in your 20’s or 80’s or any other decade and struggling with purpose, if you need to be reminded, just follow the one man who knew how to live His purpose. If you have never done this, try it and see if you start believin’. If you are a believer, keep trying it, and don’t stop believin’. Living Word Church is on a journey this spring to His cross, and through His grave and into a new church home and community center. We would love for you to join us in the journey and grow in your understanding of who Jesus is, what is your purpose is and how you can live it out.

SUVs has overtaken American roadways, they come in all sizes and price points. A few subcompact types have come and gone – like the Scion xB and Nissan Cube, but there are a couple of completely redesigned models that may pique your interest in the 20K price category.
Finally, the Nissan Brand has shown that it is still alive and well with its redesigned entry called Kicks, a diminutive, fun, and viable runabout that may be perfect for the new Bay Area family.
The Kicks has symmetrical, modern styling with defined front fenders, signature Nisan grille and short rear overhang. We particularly like the swept back headlights and unique styling elements incorporated into the front facia.
The rear has a high, bustle-back hatch with
wrap around taillights that complete the attractive design.
The interior has a lot of hard plastic surfaces, but its soft touch areas and cleaver arrangement seem to minimize what would otherwise be a turn-off. We love the infotainment system and its easy-to-use controls. It’s also great for those who aren’t as computer savvy as others. Rear seat legroom is minimal, but with the back folded down, storage is greatly enhanced.
Kicks is powered by 1.6-liter gasoline engine that motivates the front wheels; all-wheel drive is not on the menu. You can get your Kicks starting at $20,290.
The 2023 Kia Soul may not be an SUV by definition but this hatchback design is similar to the Nissan Kicks in that 4-wheel drive is not available and neither is it a true off-roader.
When the Soul first hit the market in 2008, its weird design caught the attention of many and became an instant success. Although most of the quirkiness has melded into the current version, its utility remains. The boxy shape, upright rear hatch and refreshed look have helped keep its mass appeal.
The interior is just as unique as the exterior with a center dash pod that holds the easy-touse infotainment system. Front speakers with integrated air vents are sculpted into the unique door handles with an escutcheon panel. Cloth seating is comfortable and supportive.
Under the hood is a 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter, 4-cylinder engine that gets 30-MPG. The CVT transmission drives the front wheels, and the agile suspension gives it a sporty, fun feel.
You can get a little Soul beginning at $19,890. We think it’s a great introduction to motoring.
