ay hello to my little friend!” Sorry, I couldn’t resist. Just like Al Pacino’s Scarface character pulling out his secret weapon, I’m officially introducing you all to mine! Meet the gorgeous and talented Kristy Kurjan. First of all, I am so lucky to be able to call her one of my dearest friends, and secondly, I am passing the Baylife Editor helm to Kristy’s very qualified shoulders. The magazine is growing at such a rapid pace that as hard as I paddle, I just can’t keep up. So, the winds of change are here, and the timing is just right to navigate through the uncharted seas together. I’m not abandoning the ship since it’s still all-hands-on deck, but this transition simply frees me up to work on the new ventures that Baylife will be launching in 2019! I can’t wait to share them with you! I honestly believe that people come into your life for a reason. I met Kristy at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club almost five years ago, when she was a new mom to identical twin boys. I instantly gravitated to her bubbly personality. She is truly beautiful, inside and out, and brings her remarkable resume to Baylife. Before becoming an awesome wife and mom, Kristy learned from the best by working at Glamour Magazine in New York and The Oprah Winfrey Show in Chicago. She also spent a summer in Paris, which is why we snagged her up as our Style Editor for the last few years. She puts her family first as a dedicated mom, but her imaginative side still yearns to create. So, teaming up with BayLife has been a great outlet for her and us. In the past five years she found time to write and publish three award-winning children’s books and added a wonderful baby girl named Clementine to her family. This fall, her twins Brooks and Alex are starting kindergarten, and Clementine is at preschool, freeing up a little of Kristy’s time. The timing could not be better. Here at BayLife we just happened to move into bigger headquarters with a large office sitting empty! It’s almost like I planned it. With Kristy’s name on the office door as Managing Editor, it’s beyond exciting to predict our sparkling future with her

Another dynamic individual that joined our Baylife crew is Interior Designer Shane Inman. The coincidental common thread is that Shane, just like Kristy, did some conquering of the big cities too. Shane is a Traverse City native who was destined to make a name for himself in Chicago and Manhattan. With his goals achieved, he was beckoned to return to put down roots. Like Frank Sinatra, he did it his way. Like a meteorite hurtling to earth from space, he didn’t come back calmly or quietly. He jumped headfirst into an almost impossible task, gambling to transform an ugly duckling house into a beautiful sellable swan. After five months in the making, the fixer-upper is finally complete and Shane is launching ‘Flipping Homes’ as a new arm of his Inman Design Company. It’s pretty bloody mind-blowing. Shane came into our world like a whirlwind and we are thrilled he chose to partner up with us. In the pages of this issue we share his story and his sacred secrets, so you can do it too. In this short time, we have become great friends with Shane, and have awe and respect for his work ethic. Much like myself (a blessing and a curse), he is a workaholic, zealous, and enthusiastic. He is a thinker and a doer. Together we are planning and plotting to hone in on that unchained electricity and expand upon it. It’s an exciting adventure! Stay tuned! I would also like to say a big Thank You to all of our amazing advertisers, readers, friends, and acquaintances who reached out to share their compliments and kudos in praise of our new change in format. Thank you for noticing! It took a lot of preparation and a lot of trust that it was the right thing to do. For that certainty, I thank my awesome husband, co-publisher, and partner in crime, Tom Gorsline. His vast publication knowledge and experience is truly immeasurable. I constantly admire his wise advice, risktaking attitude, and his drive to Go Big or Go Home. Without change, nothing changes. Autumn brings natural change. Our kids go back to school. They are taller, older and bigger. The weather grows cooler and as the leaves prepare for their last spectacular show before falling to the ground, they change too. I get to work with all different kinds of people! At times we’re working through very emotional and life-changing decisions, and my biggest goal is to help my friends and clients be comfortable and informed. Things aren’t always peachy, but it’s the challenge and the opportunity to help people through these scenarios that I most enjoy. Are you a native? If not where are you from, and what was your journey to Traverse City? Angela, our two dogs Brody and Buster, and I vacationed many times to the North from Kalamazoo (Go Broncos!), and eventually decided that we loved it so much here, we had to go for it, in 2012. I missed the hospitality work I was doing in years past, and the TC area meant I could find this enjoyment again. What three words best describe you? Curious – Competitive - Balanced Are there any words of wisdom you live by? “Treat others as you wish to be treated” - cliché, I know, but so useful. I really enjoy meeting new people and put this practice to use every day. What’s something you have achieved on your bucket list? Sailing our boat from Holland to Traverse City a couple summers back was an adventure far beyond my skills at the time - bucket list worthy. But, it’s given me a great taste of how enjoyable the open water can be, so now I’ve added it to the bucket list! The Chicago to Mackinac race is at the top of that list now. Tell us something no one knows about you? I love to find and cook good food, and find a new local wine or beer, some people know this. I love learning about new farms and products made in our area, and new ways to cook something I haven’t done before. I enjoy the eating part too. What’s your perfect Up North Day? Getting on the water or in the woods with Miss Emerson, our 4-year-old daughter. She absolutely loves a good adventure, and it’s so much fun to watch her explore. With our little baby boy arriving this November, I can’t wait to double the fun!

Erica Mohr: “I am deeply concerned about the disconnect between our building administrators and our leadership. Our building administrators are our connection to our teachers and ultimately OUR kids. If we have such a deep disconnect, then how do we move forward? How do we make TCAPS a top district in Michigan and a top district in the nation? In my opinion, we need positive change. We need to create an environment of trust where everyone treats others with dignity and respect. This is what we try to teach our children every day.” Deyar Jamil:“I believe that a new Board with a strategic vision for the future of TCAPS can bring about the positive change we need. Together, we can work to include the perspectives of teachers, principals, staff, parents, and community members when making major decisions. The best ideas will come from including more respected minds at the table. I would like to see the Board of Trustees ask all relevant questions of the executive team and require supporting documentation for any decisions to be made. A strategic plan that includes input from respected individuals and groups will help TCAPS make better decisions for the future, and I hope to help bring about that change.” Cathy Meyer-Looze: “I have great passion for public education, our community and helping to prepare students to be successful in a safe, engaging, and relevant school environment. I know the TCAPS district well. I served as an elementary principal, middle school principal, and high school assistant principal as well as the Professional Development Director for the district. I have great respect and admiration for our leaders, teachers, support staff, students and their families. I believe we 22

are good, but I also believe we can be better. Serving on TCAPS board of education is really the next level of work for me, and it would be an honor to serve our community of learners to be the best we can be for the children and families of Traverse City.” Patricia Henkel: “I can make a difference to help pave the way toward positive, collaborative and creative changes! I have four kids, two at Central High School, one at East Middle School and one at Old Mission Elementary. My children have had a wonderful experience in TCAPS with exceptional teachers and principals. However, I have been surprised to learn TCAPS is only slightly above average in the state of Michigan. TCAPS should lead the state in student achievement and teacher effectiveness. I am running as team with Team5TCAPS members, because although we are independent thinkers with diverse backgrounds and views, we share these core values and are deeply committed to raising the bar in student achievement at all levels—and creating a culture of collaboration, trust, collegiality.” Rhonda Busch: “My decision may not have been easy, but it was a simple one. I will have the opportunity to give back to an institution that has given me so much. As a TCAPS teacher, I worked diligently to a create a strong, safe environment with a laser focus on my instructional decisions and each student’s learning. My relationships with the students, administrators and the parent community were developed in a culture of collaboration, cooperation and trust. My 25 years of classroom experience has prepared me to take a lead in discussions surrounding the future of our district. Spanish Takeover Adios to Copper Falls and say Hola to Robby’s. The place is springing back to life, Spanish style with spices and sizzle. It will be a welcome return to the corner that has sadly sat empty for months. New energy and new flavors will be firing up the grills amid Mexican & Spanish cuisine. It’s nice to know that these are seasoned professionals taking on the task. Owners, Rosalba Montes (Robby) and Mike Leko launched the successful Robby’s Taqueria TC Mexicana at 830 East Front St. a few years ago. The favorites from their
existing menu will carry over, but they are looking forward to the opportunity to expand their menu (and our waistlines), with tapas, paella, and other Spanish dishes, plus a heavy focus on Mexican seafood dishes. The new digs can accommodate larger groups, and private parties too. We don’t yet know if they plan to close every day just like in Spain, for Siesta! 1796 South Garfield Rd.

Shane is a Traverse City native, who quite frankly is in a category all his own. One we like to call FLAWSOME (adj. a person who knows their “flaws” and knows they’re awesome regardless). He is fearless, with over 25 years of experience in design. He doesn’t just do “out of the box.” He is a tour de force in design partnered with an extroverted personality. He is also a workaholic and an impeccable perfectionist. Maybe even a little obsessive, but in a good way. His bragging rights also include Forbes Magazine, The Today Show, Pottery Barn, and the coveted New York Times. If you already know Shane, there are two things I can guarantee: 1. You’ll never
forget meeting him. 2. His progressive designs make him a leading trendsetter. His supersized goals challenged him to head to the big cities of Chicago and New York. It was a true test of talent and not for the faint of heart. He flourished in these towns with his name in lights and a Rolodex full of powerful clients. When Shane began to review his bucket list, he saw all check marks. He thought, what comes next? “I had accomplished all my dreams at 45, and I wanted to move back home, plant down some roots and settle down,” says Shane. Settling down may be a bit of an understatement. Shane’s first summer back in Traverse City has been all work and no play for five solid months. His project’s big reveal is dramatic, premiering an Inman Design Company ultra-chic remodeled home. It catapults a new umbrella of his company “Flipping Homes” into the forefront. However, he didn’t jump into this endeavor alone. He got by with a little help from his friends and past clients, Kara and Craig MacMillian.

“We have maintained our friendship through the years. Shane called one day, and we were talking about life and the need to shake things up,” explains Kara. “He mentioned moving back to Traverse City to pursue ‘flip’ houses. I knew that this ® was going to be a perfect match.”

Shane had the time and industry expertise, and the MacMillians had the resources. “I would be able to help when I could, and Shane would act as the project manager,” recalls Kara. “I talked it over with Craig, and he was supportive, as he always is, and excited to for this opportunity. We were able to iron out the details and turn all of our passions into a reality.” Another couple that has been part of the transformation is Erica and Brian Mohr, who own Calybr Homes. Erica had hired Shane in 2013 to help design their dream home, which would make its big debut in the coveted Home Builders Parade of Homes. “He expertly guided us to
take big bold risks. Our house was one of the first to have modern black windows, oversized double islands in the kitchen, and all shades of grey on the walls,” says Erica. “He even suggested painting the ceiling in the dining room a dark grey. It was out of the box and scary. But it all came out amazing.” Their house became a finished contemporary classic, fresh and innovative, and won numerous Parade of Homes awards for Calybr Homes (with a little help from Shane!). As they say, teamwork makes the dream work. These fab friends, armed with real-life skills as smart investors, devised a plan to make the HIP FLIP House happen. Kara and Craig invested in purchasing the before house. Erica and Brian, working as Calybr Homes, became the General Contractor to oversee the project. Shane’s job was to draw up the blueprints to redesign and remodel, adding the wow factor.

Shane’s planned additions included a master en-suite bathroom, and a bright laundry room in the basement. That was the easy part, since Shane’s vast talent and experience are undeniable. But this house redesign was one of many firsts for Shane. Working on an understated moderate home with a tight budget challenged him to use all of his expert skills. He was all-hands-on-deck, living and working at the Flip House in all stages of construction. One bedroom became his office and the other his actual bedroom. He rolled up his sleeves and was doing an enormous amount of the labor himself. “I YouTube’d directions for anything I didn’t already know. I had a hand in almost everything except drywall and carpet,” he smiles. Thankfully, when he needed to call in the big guns (the list of professional tradesmen that make the magic happen), everybody still loved Shane! His fifteen years of relationships were loyal and trusted. He easily picked up where he had left off. “I’m back!” he said, and along came plumbers, electricians, tile guys, carpet installers, landscapers, and more. It takes a big dedicated workforce to flip a house. They don’t show all that on TV!

Although transforming a property from drab to dynamic is personally rewarding – the sole purpose for taking on such an enormous feat is purely financial. The 2-Step Interior Design Process: Decrease the distance between your dreams and reality by realizing that you are not going to be able to do everything.

As the days of summer wane, we turn a little more inward. We seek spaces in our homes that we can feel the warmth of the sun and enjoy the outdoor scenery from our favorite nooks and crannies.
built in drawer to store your reading materials, perhaps a favorite blanket. Having a small surface to set your cup of tea or wine is almost a must. This could be a simple little tea table.
A window seat, a banquette for morning coffee, our favorite chair placed by an easterly or westerly window pending whether you are a morning or early evening person. Cozy is the theme. Even the four legged family members will often gravitate to these spots.
Take a look around your home. Is there a corner or window that is calling to be sat in? Could be your new favorite nook or cranny!
It is amazing how a room can be transformed when careful planning and design is applied to the right corner of the home. A place that calls to have something added (no more fake fig trees please). By adding the quiet space to sit gives the space not only a more finished feel, but also adds a use to that square footage. We so often focus on how to arrange seating so you are always part of the group, participating in the activities and conversation, but if you are like me, some of your favorite spaces are for quiet reflection, reading, puzzle doing. It’s a part of the room, but the focus is not on the center but to be more sidelined. The basics in designing these spaces are simple. A window is preferred. How else to capture the sunshine or simple daylight? I love a bench with a

Wonder World T
he famous Martha Stewart is a one-woman sensation, gifted with unbelievable talents, to create anything with flawless panache. She was Pinterest before Pinterest was even a thing! And yet, with all that wallop, she is still no match for our hometown Creative Genius, Ms. Izzy Semrau. Izzy is a true anomaly. She embodies all of Martha’s captivating capabilities: design, craft, cook, grow, garden, and elaborately entertain with style and grace. Above all, her eye for interior design is staggering and featured throughout her eclectic home. Izzy devised every detail herself, merging old with new, reclaiming, repurposing, and conceiving one-of-a-kind creations. Much like the lady herself, Izzy’s home is edgy, curious, charming, and truly fascinating. Welcome to Izzy’s world. In 2010 Izzy and Mike, her husband of 53 years, were living in Park City, Utah. Mike had fallen ill due to the high altitude, making a move necessary. As Izzy recalls, “We finally chose Traverse City because we realized it had everything we needed: culture, transportation, and medical.” Settling in, they chose an original 1930 historic farmhouse situated on a lush twelve acres on Old Mission Peninsula, which included private waterfront on crystal blue East Bay. They decided to initiate an extensive re-construction project custom to their needs and wants. FALL 2018 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

“The house really just happened and thank goodness I had a husband that let me do whatever I wanted,” laughs Izzy. The finished home is Izzy’s pride and joy, and it’s a spectacular showcase to behold. It’s filled to the brim with treasured moments spent with family and friends and is especially beloved as Mike sadly passed away in March of 2017. The construction took over a year and a half and they lived in the house on and off. “I cooked on a two-burner hot plate and washed dishes in the laundry sink,” she recalls. During the long process, Izzy bonded with the myriad of subs and contractors. “Every Friday I cooked a big pot of something for them. I felt it was about all of us. It’s not about the house going through the change, it’s about the people going through it with you. They were all just so proud, and that makes my heart pound with joy,” smiles Izzy. The original farmhouse section was gutted all the way to the studs. Workmen peeled away generations of years and layers, magically revealing walls of sturdy shiplap. It was farmhouse barn wood chic, years before the trend hit the mainstream. She chose to leave them raw and bare. “Texture on walls, to me, is so important. It adds dimension,” she explains. 54

The long-standing narrow stairs lead up to the loft. Antique mirrors that Izzy picked up at antique stores embellish the walls as you climb. Ahead lies an enchanting bedroom with a gorgeous view of the bay. “It had to be redesigned. There wasn’t a loft, but now it’s my favorite room,” she tells us. Another redesign was the dining room. “It was a summer porch, but a useless room, so we decided to add all new windows,” says Izzy. From the dining room, a bar connects the kitchen. The bar is constructed of old bowling alley flooring Izzy picked up at

Odom Reusable Building Materials in Grawn, MI. “I don’t design; I see things and I think, Could I could use that somehow?” That’s how her unusual living room wall was conceived: painted Victorian-era tin tiles. “It was all outside at the back of Odom’s, and it was full of lead paint from old ceilings. We pounded it all off and Mike glazed it.” It once again gave her walls the texture she loves. The walls in the dining room are wildly creative. They are actually the back of the wood floor strips they removed. “We had all this left and when we flipped it over and

it looked like that, we put it on the walls,” laughs Izzy. “We pulled it up because I like continuity on the floor, it makes the flow consistent.” She chose Oak Wood stained a dark grey throughout the home, and it’s an understated contrast to the bold colors on the walls and décor. As Izzy recalls stories of how things came together, your mind wanders to thoughts of, “I wish I had thought of that, and what a great idea!” She values objects and elements we’ve seen and maybe thrown out. Instead, she artfully places them on shelves, on walls, makes a table or a light fixture. Each room is literally a feast for the eyes, being imaginative, resourceful, and oh so creative. Where Izzy doesn’t skimp on makeshift design is in her beloved kitchen. It could be the envy of any top chef. It is commercial grade with industrial steel countertops, a butler’s pantry, a pull-out pantry and a Wolf stove. Izzy adores cooking and is well renowned for her sophisticated dinner parties seated at her original farmhouse table, long before Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware caught on. And just like Martha, Izzy is at home in the garden. “I wanted some land and water. I think I was a former farmer. My parents were farmers and I love dirt. I think it’s osmosis,” Izzy laughs. She grows a plethora of veggies, fruits, and herbs in her garden. A high hanging sign claims her space, saying “Izzy’s Garden.” Izzy says, “I love nature! I talk to the flowers and the trees and give thanks.” In the middle of the driveway stands a playful frog with a welcome wave, and nearby in the yard sits a bright red caboose. Every house has a caboose, right? The caboose has a history all its own. It was part of the Grand Trunk Railway in Port Huron. The home’s original owner transported it onto the property with cranes, Izzy explains. “It was a horrible yellow and a mess. I took on the job of making it look better.” Who would have thought? From the exterior this exquisite house looks reasonably conservative.
On the interior, Izzy Semrau singlehandedly crafted a multi-faceted, vivacious world that’s fresh and innovative and breaks all the rules of design. She mixed styles: industrial amongst Victorian, bohemian next to modern, vintage farmhouse amid contemporary, and more. All live in harmony under one big roof. It’s true that you can never judge a book by its cover.
