It also reminds me of a few other things. First, how much people are completely rejuvenated with just a hint of some rays of sunshine. (I am sure you have noticed how it’s been hard to stay in a sunny mood this winter?) And also, how we must treasure the gift of life in general all around us and live a little simpler, appreciating what we have. My grandmother was literally the MacGyver of her day. Born during the First World War, she didn’t waste a thing! She was living green, recycling, repurposing and upcycling before it was hip. She even dried out used tea leaves! So while we celebrate Spring, the rebirth of nature when everything wakes up, we acknowledge the huge part that nature plays in our moods, our routines and our family’s well-being. The days get a little longer, temperatures get a little warmer and life is wonderful. With the sun on our face, we also want to focus on having an attitude of gratitude. (Hello, we live everyone else’s dream of the Baylife, remember?) That’s why this issue is mostly about making do with what we have, and breathing new life into beautiful old things. Even our stunning cover and editor pic showcases the talents of semipro photographer, Jim Sorbie. Astonishingly, he isn’t by trade a commercial photographer. (You certainly would never know it—we think he could quit his day job.) He captured the shots on the way to his other love of Sailing, unwrapping his sailboat in Northport from a long winter in storage and breaking it out for Spring!

You won’t see a sprawling lakeside home in this issue either, even though we love to feature them as they inspire and motivate us to dream big and small. Instead, you will be truly charmed by the quaintness and elegance of what an Old House can become and has to offer any one of us, downtown living in the historic streets that carved the way for coolness more than 100 years ago. You will feel the love and pure passion that Laura and Chris Oblinger have for their warm and inviting home. In keeping with that theme, we also expanded Ask Angela for this issue, and there you will find some exquisite pictures of Angela and Mike Goodall’s home that’s a real labor of love. Karen Brennan tops our list of making do, for sure. The fascinating items that she creates with her Deer Creek Junk are truly amazing. Even my grandma would be impressed by her repurposing skills. She’s also self-taught on the power tools that she expertly uses to fabricate her home décor, one-of-kind beauties. Like sprinkling seeds in a garden, there are little specks of Spring everywhere you look in these pages. They’ll put a hop in your step and shake out the cobwebs after what has been a long hibernation for us all. secret recipe: LENTIL SALAD A favorite of many who dine at the historic firehouse, no matter the season, the lentil salad is not only delicious, but healthy, too. The lentils add body and protein, and make this a hearty salad. To start, gather the following ingredients: 1 cup of lentils (french or beluga lentils are ideal) 1/4 cup of finely diced carrots 1/4 cup of finely diced celery 1/2 cup of red vinegar (maybe a dash more) 2 cups of spicy greens (arugula, mustard greens, etc.) 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil 2 medium-sized beets Ricotta salata (a firm sheep’s milk Italian cheese) The first step is to roast the beets (covered) in 350 oven for 35-45 minutes, or until they are tender. Cool, peel and dice them up, then lightly dress them with lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper. Set aside.

Next, make a sachet with the following ingredients:
“One of my favorite quotes about cooking comes from French Chef Marie-Antoine Carême: “When we no longer have good cooking in the world, we will have no literature, nor high and sharp intelligence, nor friendly gatherings, no social harmony.” It strikes a chord, yes?
2 bay leaves 2 cloves of garlic 5 whole peppercorns 3 sprigs of fresh thyme Cook the lentils with sachet in about 1 1/2 quarts of water for about 10 minutes. Add diced vegetables and vinegar, and cook for an additional 10-15 min, until lentils are tender. Drain water, and cool lentils and vegetables on a sheet tray. To make the vinaigrette, combine dijon, vinegar, herbs, and slowly add in the olive oil while mixing. 1 1/2 tablespoons of Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon red vinegar 1/4 cup olive oil 1 tablespoon fresh chives 1 tablespoon fresh parsley Once the beets and lentils have cooled, dress the lentils with dijon vinaigrette, salt and pepper, then spoon them onto a bed of spicy greens (such as arugula or mustard greens). Pepe Nero is a dream come true for Sicilian native Chef Giorgio Lo Greco, who has been cooking since the age of seven! He presents real European cuisine, secret family recipes handed down generation to generation. Giorgio learned them hands-on in his Grandma’s kitchen, and later at his uncle’s famed restaurant in Sicily! Everything on the menu is freshly prepared and made to order, including delicious pastas, salads and stews. The sauces are bursting with flavor, and entrées like Veal Scallopini with mushrooms are mouthwateringly delicious. The pasta choices are heavenly with Wild Mushroom Agnolotti, Linguine with Clams, and my daughter’s personal favorite (pictured) Rigatoni with Peas and Meat Sauce. (Really, she licked the plate!) Giorgio masterfully creates these enticing flavors that will keep you coming back for more. Giorgio’s most famed dish of all is the most simple: the Linguine Alla Carrettiera with garlic drizzled extra virgin olive oil and Italian parsley. Giorgio swears by it. Last but not least comes scrumptious Cannoli!! Made with the best ricotta cheese ever, it’s creamy and smooth and Giorgio’s own recipe boasts a hint of lemon. It’s worth a trip to Pepe Nero just for a cannoli and Italian Espresso. When sitting under the old stone arches of the Meracato, it’s just like you’re at a European café oozing with character where people watching is fun. The amazingly attentive staff also includes Giorgio’s wife, Monica, who greets you warmly with a big smile and a Ciao! She can often be found floating elegantly from table to table, making sure your visit is the best it can be. They make a terrific team, pursuing this, their American Dream! The Other Pinot While most wine drinkers are familiar with the famed Pinot Noir varietal, with the help of Myles from the famed wine movie Sideways, most are not as familiar with the white varietal Pinot Blanc. Considered to be a genetic mutation from the Pinot Noir grape, Pinot Blanc is typically produced in France, Germany, Italy, Hungary and in the United States. Usually fermented dry the wine can hold hints of mineral with a bright lasting finish, and hints of tropical fruit. Typically a great food wine. Most of the Pinot Blanc produced in the U.S. comes from California but wouldn’t you know, we have some representation coming out of Northern Michigan. Verterra Winery of Leelanau County produces one of my favorite Pinot Blanc’s from the region. This is a very limited production wine with the 2012 vintage only producing roughly 500 cases. The Verterra Pinot Blanc boasts aromas of ripe apple, mineral and banana with a hint of sugar on the palate with green apple acidity. Palette Bistro perfectly delights all the senses – Sight, Sound & Smell Daniel Faylor welcomed us in on our visit to the restaurant. “To create a truly memorable restaurant experience, it’s all about great food, great service and the great atmosphere. Sight, Sound and Smell,” he passionately conveyed. We couldn’t agree more, and Palette Bistro has it all. It’s almost deceiving if you see the little cozy building from the Bay Street front. From that vantage point, you might think it’s a small, comfy place with just a few tables. Step inside and you realize that the restaurant completely opens up all the way back. You will delight in discovering a two-story breathtaking view of Little Traverse Bay, available from any one of the romantically candle-lit and intimate wooden tables. In the warmer months, you can spill out onto the deck
upstairs, creating the ultimate outdoor dining experience. This may be a secret of the already loyal Palette Bistro lovers, but now it’s out. Sorry! In a stark classic contrast to the brown, wooden barn-inspired floors, the walls spill color; glorious paintings adorn the walls on both levels from real starving artists. The other noticeable rarity that sets Palette Bistro apart is a roaring brick oven just to the right side of the bar. It’s part of their open kitchen atmosphere and very inviting. The delicious aromas overflow, meandering throughout the entire restaurant and setting the proper tone for your taste buds. In fact, Chef Jeremy Pomeroy tells us that half of the dishes on the menu come out the oven. The menu incorporates Mediterranean-inspired techniques. “I love to take classical flavors and reconstruct it, putting my own twist on it,” Jeremy, who was born and raised in the UP, tells us. He gets plenty of practice with this, as the menu is shaken up as the seasons evolve. Food lovers will find this fabulous. Every tasty dining experience can be a unique one—there’s no boredom setting in here. How many times do you go out to eat and already know the menu inside and out before arrival? A little surprise and spontaneity is what any great date night should be about. As we said, there are small plates. With the large plate entrees, some decisions to ponder are dishes like Moroccan BBQ Chicken Breast with mint-feta-corn bread pudding and green tea braised kale; Seafood Paella with shrimp, scallops, mussels, Spanish chorizo and peas; or Bistro Tender Medallions with pan roasted beef shoulder tenders, kale-rutabaga-bleu cheese mash and a red wine-mushroom demi-glace. Need a tissue? Perfect Pizzas come bubbling out of the oven, too, and the menu even generously accommodates vegetarians with a no meat zone section just for them! Happy Hours and Date 30

“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder” and “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure”—you know these old sayings. So when we say Karen Brennan has a soft spot for Junk, well, it’s all relative! Here’s the dictionary meaning of JUNK: anything that is regarded as worthless, meaningless or contemptible. That seems a little harsh. Thank goodness Karen is literally Junk’s Salvation. Her Deer Creek Junk business repurposes, recycles and beautifies Special Junk. “I think of Junk affectionately,” Karen says. Karen creatively breathes renewed life into tired and forgotten items, making something new to love. She is truly inspired by the craftsmanship and detail from the past life of vintage and artistic beauty. Her creations are extraordinary. If you know your way around a Pinterest board, you are vividly aware of how influential this movement has become with a new generation of crafters. Karen’s working workshop and store is located in East Jordan, and already she has changed some of her inventory and original ideas to accommodate the trend. People and interior designers shop just for her unique, one-of-a-kind Home décor items—creative lighting, wall décor, benches, headboards, shelving and more. But these days, there’s a “new normal” client, looking solely for the raw materials that Karen stocks to satisfy his or her Pinterest creative cravings; let’s call them the Pin-Junkies! A true original, Karen was doing this long before Shabby was Chic and Pinterest’s creator was even a thought (cofounder Ben Silbermann was born in 1982). She grew up downstate in Williamston on the family’s hobby farm. “My dad would take me to the farm auctions with him. I’d pick up interesting things and started to appreciate old things,” recalls Karen of the beginnings of her lifelong passion for classic objects and frequenting flea markets for fun finds. She didn’t put this passion into practice for a while though. “I graduated from Michigan Tech as a mechanical engineer and did that for 20 years,” she MARCH/APRIL 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH

said. It really wasn’t until her dad had sadly passed and she returned home to empty all those barns full of what others would see as Doohickeys, Scrap and Trash, that she realized she had a Treasure Trove of antiques and architectural salvage ready to be molded into magic! This is when she Repurposed her career. That was 10 years ago. The pole barn on her Deer Creek property (hence, her company’s name) slowly became full of rare, uniquely put together items that people were custom-ordering from Petoskey to Traverse City, and she would host barn sales. Along the way, she sharpened her tool belt resume. “I’m self-taught, but my father-in-law helped me a lot. I’m not a trained carpenter, but I think it adds a subtle difference that things aren’t perfect,” Karen says. She proficiently uses a cut-off saw, table saw, hand drill and a drill press! That’s way beyond a glue gun, people! But that’s in there, too, when Karen adds the finishing touches along with painting and distressing. It all contributes to the individual style that has allowed her to carve out a unique niche in home décor. Up until this point, her passion had been more of a mental and emotional outlet, not necessarily a financial one (like most artists, unfortunately). But now that her kids were grown and in college, she felt that she could expand. A year ago, Karen moved all her junk out of her pole barn and down the road a mile to where she bought the old ambulance station building that now houses her Deer Creek Junk Universe, 1600 square feet of Good Junk that’s open for business all year. Karen had an amazing summer in the new space, and she nearly sold out of all the eclectic creations she had made. Since then, Karen has been collecting up her Junk and working those power tools, getting ready for when East Jordan wakes up again. She is excited to host some workshops and her Junkapalooza event again. Deer Creek Junk is also known for garden pieces, so take a spring drive out and see Karen in action. You’ll be amazed at how the old and ordinary can be transformed into the new and whimsical. NOVEMBER SKY AT SLEEPING BEAR DUNES
TOM HAXBY Just in time for award-winning photographer Tom Haxby’s exhibit at the City Opera House, March 4–30, we get to introduce him to our readers. The exhibit will feature fine-art landscape photos from Michigan. You tell us all the time, “We love the photography in your magazine.” We specifically wanted a representation of a Northern Michigan spring, so that’s what we chose from Tom’s beautiful portfolio. “My grandfather inspired interest in photography by buying me my first 35mm camera, which was a Minolta SR-T-MC in 1970,” says Tom. As a local photographer who lives in Kingsley, Tom has been recognized nationally by the North American Nature Photography Association in their annual competition with photos that have placed in the top 250 for each of the last two years. Several of his photos have been published in statewide magazines, even gracing their covers. His photos have also been published in books, calendars and numerous other publications. Tom is also a member of the Traverse Area Camera Club, where he has achieved the Master photographer level. His dream is to hopefully make photography his prime occupation one day. HOME SWEET OLD HOME I love old houses, so much that I own two of them. My husband and I first moved back to Northern Michigan in 1995. We spent almost two years looking at what seemed like a million homes. (Thank you, Sam Abood, for being so patient with us!) But when we found our home, we knew it when we saw it. It had everything everyone looking at old homes loves: hardwood floors, large trim details, the original plaster walls, open stairway in the foyer. We fell in love immediately and moved in 30 days later.

What we didn’t know much about at that time was the mechanical systems and overall big ticket items that no previous homeowner had addressed. Of course, the kitchen was the first room to remodel!

It was an eye-opener to say the least, and we really joked about buying the “money pit.” Of course, the project took much longer than anticipated and cost more than we had budgeted. It was not enough to dissuade us, as we have tackled the roof (removing three layers of asphalt shingles and one layer of cedar shake), both bathrooms and every bedroom. The finished attic space became the master bedroom, and the original bedroom area turned into our media room. The work continued outside where we built a
new garage, added a pergola and patio to our outdoor living, reworked the porches … and the list goes on. But to this day, it is still the charm and character of our old homes that makes us feel warm and comfortable. In every project we tackled, one thing remained consistent: We kept the integrity of the home intact and repurposed as many of the existing materials as possible. We are lucky to live in an area that has neighborhoods full of “charming” old homes, and I am happy to be part of a time when the return to downtown living has become mainstream. Each of these homes comes with a story and the opportunity for many new ones to be made when just the right owner decides to move in. MARCH/APRIL 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH

We were thrilled when Laura and Chris Oblinger excitedly agreed to open up their home, allowing us a peek inside. You may recognize Laura. She is such a huge part of our business community as chief operating officer of The Traverse Area Chamber of Commerce. Husband Chris is a talented Hair Stylist who spent years out on the West Coast in California and now shares his expertise in Traverse City at Salon West. Their favorite room is the front living room, it’s the room they resort to for family game nights and for the longest time didn’t even have a TV. “This is it,” were the exact words that Laura recalls they blurted out. The couple had been house hunting in 2001, and they had barely set foot inside the historic 1895 Victorian home when they just knew. It was “love at first sight. They had just glanced at the living room, but when it’s right, you just feel it. They did. The Victorian fulfilled all the “must-haves” on their list: in town, old home and lots of character to boot. They had looked at many others, but this one lured them in just from the curb appeal alone. They were hooked! Little did they know at the time that curb appeal would lead to a spontaneous combustion of overwhelming friendship and community on their front porch for years to come. Embarking on this adventure was already a momentous occasion for couple. This was the first home they would purchase together, and they were enjoying the excitement of being on this lofty quest to find the perfect place to make their home. It was the beginning of building a life with hopes and dreams.

“We have to have this house.” Laura recalls saying, and it was obviously meant to be. In a few short days, their little piece of heaven all fell into place. Being in the Historic District and the heart of the community was important to the couple, but the other bonus was This Old House had already been renovated. The major addition was the back den, which was the original garage. Any other remodel additions were just basic updates with windows, heating and cooling and landscaping. Everything else was more or less original and in good shape. All that the couple needed to do was the fun cosmetic stuff. They embraced this task wholeheartedly, and today their home oozes charm, it’s elegant and cozy. Simply put, they call their home their Oasis. And their home is full of Grace, with the gift of their beautiful daughter named Grace who magically transformed their home and their lives like only children can entirely, eight years ago. Our house is our oasis, we love it. The pinnacle conversation starter over Wine & Cheese is always the adorned Wall of Memories; this beckons a smile, a belly laugh, giggle or an “aww.” The wall sits in the dining room off the kitchen and is entirely filled with cherished framed photographs that are large and small, black and white and color. This wall is their homage to their family heritage—where they have been, from whom they came, meaningful memories and loved ones here and passed on. It was actually one of the first things they did when they moved in, and not just anything makes that coveted wall, Laura tells me. It just instantly gives you a knowing glimpse that these people love life. Their favorite room is the front living room. This is the room they resort to for family game nights, and for the longest time, they didn’t even have a TV. Many of the rooms in their house took on their own unique theme as they decorated. The back den transports you inside a little log cabin. This is no accident. The sign above reads “Pierport Beach,” and it’s fash-
ioned after Chris’ family’s cottage on Bear Lake where lazy summers have been spent fishing for more than 45 years. It’s actually the reason that Chris finally moved here. An Ohio native, at 18 he followed his sister to LA and lived amongst the stars as a very successful Vidal Sassoon-trained hairdresser for years. Laura was born and raised in Traverse City. After meeting Chris and falling head over heels, the two were married at the family cottage on Pierport Beach. With such sentimental memories recreated here, there’s no explanation needed for why the back den is also called the Snuggle Room!
When spring has sprung and the outdoors beckon, the Oblinger’s answer the call with style. On their side porch, they added a cabana area complete with a swing and, of course, a dedicated area for summer evening campfires. But the Front Porch is where the neighborhood party always starts, usually not planned and completely spontaneous. As Laura says, “There is no other porch it happens on.” The tell-tale sign that they are ready for fun is simply two chairs and two glasses of Chardonnay, accompanied by the couple’s smiling faces and beautiful daughter Grace playing outside.
Both Chris and Laura love to cook, so there’s always something hot going on in the kitchen! It’s not big by any standards, but in this kitchen it’s the good times, good food and the quality that count, not the size! Not many original old homes do have huge kitchens, and this is where compromise works, the fun still flows through the breakfast nook and overflows onto the rustic dining room table. Facing the table is a door that leads to their other calming oasis.
So for the Oblinger Family that found their fairy tale much because of a place named Bear Lake, let’s say This Old House is just like the “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” house— not too big, not too small, but JUST RIGHT. Have a happily ever after, and thank you so much for welcoming us inside.

The City Opera House 106 EAST FRONT ST The Richardsonian Victorian building was built in 1891 by a consortium of businessmen at the urging of and with financial support from Traverse City’s founding father, Perry Hannah. It was designed by architect E.R. Prall of Pontiac, Michigan to accommodate 1,200 patrons. It opened in February of 1892 with the play “Avenged.” In 1945 it became fully shuttered for nearly four decades. In the 1970’s the City Opera House Heritage Association was established and in 1980, William and Gretchen Votruba gifted it to the city. A renovation of $5.6 million was put into place and the Opera House was reopened to the public in 2004. Today it is joyously alive with the arts, and is embraced as the beating heart of the community. Dew Drops of Early Spring No other time is as greatly anticipated than that of spring. In it’s very essence, spring is about rebirth, hope, and reconciliation with Mother Nature. For what seems like a year now, we have battled a season of gripping cold temperatures, with almost daily snowfall that has shattered seasonal averages across the Northern Michigan region. As I write this, another four inches of snow is falling outside, and spring feels like a pinprick of light at the end of a long, dark, ice cave tunnel. But, as sure as the sun will rise again tomorrow, so too will spring’s warmth transform our hearts and blush our cheeks. If you’re searching for the wonderment to be found in the details of nature, a casual stroll along a city street in the youth of spring reveals life and beauty that rivals any in the wild. 64
