Happy Holidays from my little family to yours: Your Publishers Teri and Tom Gorsline and our daughter Teaghan.

he season of Love, Light and Sparkles is upon us. How the heck did it get here so quickly? My goal is to embrace the season with open arms and to just for a short while Stop the OverGlorification of the word BUSY. Have you read that quote on the mighty Pinterest? I am always too bloody busy. Even my daughter Teaghan asks me, when I have denied her attention, which breaks my heart, “Why are you always so BUSY, Mommy!” I am making way for a NEW BUSY: Laughter, Fun, Quality time spent with Family near and far, and intimate get-togethers with Real Friends. Wish me luck because in December we also work on the Jan/Feb issue. The publishing world comes complete with deadlines. Your clue that they are stressful? This word begins with “Dead”! But I read somewhere, “If you Believe you can, you’re halfway there!” So what are you and your family looking forward to most this holiday season—keeping old traditions and making some new ones? Well, inside the pages of this issue we highlight the tradition of people doing good. We feature the wonderful Mt. Holiday Ski Resort: The doors literally stay open because of the community that supports it. No other place encompasses the spirit of Family Togetherness and Winter Fun like Mt. Holiday. We ourselves were personally reminded of the happy place atmosphere when we were thrown into the fold with Teaghan’s first-ever ski lesson last December. And when we attended their fundraiser Soirée Under the Stars just a few weeks ago, we realized these are a bunch of passionate, fun people! We shook up the Style this time, too. The locations aren’t as pretty. (One is a kitchen; we couldn’t make that look pretty!) BUT, it’s about the people and what they represent as we once again are mindful of giving back. Maggie Kent is the director of the Toys for Tots program, making sure every needy child gets a toy! Her shoot took place in the Great Wolf Lodge where the big

kickoff happens Nov. 22. We then headed to a Goodwill kitchen, finding Brandon Seng, their food director. We also met another do-gooder of a different sort, Santa Bob! He makes kids smile and keeps magic alive in their hearts—that’s BIG! He lives locally, and was the Downtown Santa until a health scare had him reevaluate his life. He made a bucket list, followed his dream and was persistent, and now he is a Santa at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom! Sparkle and Shine was also another big inspiration. To get you into the decorating mood, meet Kristin and Chris Lutz and their dazzling house. Kristin is an Interior designer, and she gave us the tour of her stunning home. She is a self-confessed Girlie Girl, and the house zealously reflects it in chandeliers, sunburst mirrors and shiny objects galore, all with impeccable style I have to add. We were so impressed by her style that we asked her to contribute to our Home Scoop in this issue. All the lighting ideas are from inside her home; the feature and scoop were captured beautifully by photographer Jason Hulet. And with Jolly also a theme throughout the pages, we took a short trip up the peninsula to the Jolly Pumpkin. They know how to get their Jolly on. Barbara and Paul Olson warmly welcomed us, and we shamelessly accepted wine and food to make sure in our research that you would love it. And you will, for sure! I will end my little note with news I am so proud to share. We featured the story of Paperworks Studio last Holiday issue. Right after our story published, their funding ended and the program was left in limbo. Happily, as we begin the season of Miracles, news came that our very own community’s Utopia Foundation will help Paperworks return to changing people’s lives one card at time. I literally choked up when I heard the news. I BELIEVE in Miracles. Stay Sparkly and Shine Bright this Holiday Season.

“Santa’s Coming! I Know Him! I Know Him!”

DISNEY SANTA: SANTA BOB (Bob Schmidt) He will shortly be on his way back for a second year as Santa at the Magic Kingdom. A few years ago after being persuaded by his brother to attend Santa School, he found his calling. Santa School, a three-day boot camp in Midland where the best of the best from all over the world are trained. “It was a real Life changer” he says. The first year was lean, but by his third he scored the downtown Traverse City Santa House. Things were looking “jingly” to return for the next year when his life took an unexpected change of plan. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was eventually removed and benign. (Thank goodness.) But Santa Bob said it led him to take stock of his mortality.

Disney Santa: How did that happen? My wife Amy and I are snowbirds, and we visited Hollywood Studios where our son works. I observed the Santa in action and thought, I can do that! I made a bucket list to include being a Disney Santa. I was persistent until I finally got a sit-down interview, something I’ve never done in my life as a Union Pipefitter. I landed the job on the spot, and I was offered the official weekday meet and greet Santa! I even asked the interviewer to pinch me because my dream had come true. “You didn’t ask what it pays,” she said to me. I replied, “You mean I get paid for this?”

What does a Disney Santa do? I am asked for my autograph, and I reply, “It costs something. You want to know what? A hug!” I appear weekdays from Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve at Candy Cane Square. Santa Claus is the only meet-and-greet character allowed to have people sit on his lap!

Any Downside to this dream? My commitment to Mickey Mouse means I can’t appear in Traverse City, but most disappointing is I’m not with my two young grandchildren during the holidays. But I do feel very fortunate to be living my dream!

“For lamb I look for inspiration from Mediterranean cuisines. The flavors of southern France, Italy, Greece, Morocco and the Middle East lend themselves to the earthy, grassy flavors of lamb.”

2 cups Provencal Green Olives, pitted Drained patted dry

1 Tblsp Parsley Chopped

1/4 cup Piquillo Peppers Roasted Peeled

1/2 cup Olive Oil

1 small Shallot Chopped

2 tsp Lemon Juice Salt to taste

2 cloves Garlic, fresh Peeled chopped Combine all ingredients and carefully pulse in food processor until blended but still chunky Marinated Feta 1lb Feta Cheese 1/2 cup Olive Oil 1 tsp Fennel Seed 1 tsp Coriander Seed 1 each Lemons

1/4 tsp Crushed Red Pepper Flakes 2 each Fresh Rosemary Sprigs 4 each Fresh Thyme Sprigs 2 each Bay Leaves

1/2 tsp Cracked Black Pepper

1. In a dry pan toast spices over medium heat until fragrant, do not brown 2. Toss in fresh herbs and bay leaves and toast slightly until aromatic 3. Combine with olive oil and lemon peel 4. Add feta once oil has cooled slightly 5. Refrigerate overnight for best flavor, will store for weeks in oil

Michelle Konstanzer is the Food & Beverage Director, and she considers the T-Bar to be a hidden gem of the neighborhood. The place of course resembles a ski lodge, because it’s located in one, so its decor (no surprise) is vintage ski. Coming in from the cold, the atmosphere is warm and inviting with a blazing fire and windows viewing the ski hill. It’s a snug little place to relax and unwind with your drinks of choice and a yummy menu to contemplate. Michelle personally has pride in this menu! One special is her award-winning Amazingness White Chicken Chili, made from scratch! Its humble beginnings boast making a hearty meal in a Crock-Pot for her kids, as she worked nights. It’s won the TC Downtown Chili cook-off several years in a row, and last year they sold out of all 55 gallons! The Jolly Pumpkin is an enigmatic place to spend a cozy and memorable evening as a couple or a fun evening with friends. hat is the Jolly Pumpkin? It’s a Jolly Place times three! A brewery, distillery and fabulous restaurant that also uniquely boasts a sad and fascinating history. Allegedly, it’s haunted! Cue the freaky oohs and aahs. The huge building is also home to the Mission Table Restaurant. If you’re an oldie but goodie you may remember the place known in its former glory years as The Bowers Harbor Inn. Built in the 1800s, in the 1920s it was a lumber baron’s palatial estate where his betrayed and distraught wife (Genevieve) died and her vengeful ghost supposedly still lingers the halls. We should have at least piqued your interest in a visit with folklore and mystery, but we promise that once you go Jolly, you never go Back. If you’re an ale head and love your designer brewskis, pull up a stool! Their micro amber nectars are lovingly brewed by Ron Jeffries, the

man behind the name Jolly Pumpkin. His Artesian Ales are Rock Star famous and have been voted as the Best Belgian Beer by The New York Times and beyond. If spirits move you, they also have a small batch distillery. End your love affair with Jack, Jim, Johnnie or Jose, and have a fling with local. It’s the only Tasting Room offering all Three Adult Beverages: Beer, Spirits and Wine! It’s a great compromise for “Winey” Husbands who won’t drink a glass! The restaurant is housed in what was actually the original house’s barn, and it still emulates the rustic feel. When you enter through the huge, heavy wooden door, you’re greeted with an immediate ambiance that is a little dark and mysterious, reminiscent of an ancient European pub. a long inviting bar beckons (Cheers). High above are endless mug club mugs that grace the ceiling, dangling like bats in a coveted cave. (Local celebrity Carter Oosterhouse’s number is 00.) There are cozy booths and high-top tables. An upstairs seating area frames the entire space, offering windows with an outside view and a peek down to the interior below; big wooden beams and barn wood trim create a maze of wood. The gleaming fire flickers and the giant Moose Head keeps lookout, along with wacky and wild light fixtures to captivate your attention. Husband and wife team Barbara and Paul Olson are the Managing GMs. For years they vacationed in the area and envisioned retiring here. After being away on the East Coast forging successful careers, the stars aligned for them to move here with their two kids and call it home. We have wonderful partners who truly appreciate us, Barbara says of owners Jon Carlson and Greg Lobdell who bought the property in 2006.

Paul is the executive chef and oversees both the Jolly Pumpkin and the Mission Table (which is formal dining open April through October). Paul works closely with local farmers for fresh fare, and his cooking style is to let the ingredients speak for themselves. He mentors NMC culinary students too and is part of the culinary board there. The passionate pupils can always be found hands-on learning in the bustling kitchen, whipping up signature dishes like the artesian wood-fired oven Pizzas they serve complete with amber ale baked in the fresh dough! (I’m sure they sample that ale?) Oh My Golly and will the food make your Eyes and Belly Jolly! Don’t be fooled by the pub ambiance. There’s no mediocre pub grub here! Ditch those beer goggles. The New Normal to pair with your designer ales includes gourmet fare, endless choices with a twist and culinary surprises! Your taste buds are tickled and in for a treat just being seated! They place a little bowl of heaven in front of you—their own season blend chips with a yummy dip! You’ll devour them and beg for more! This is just a taste of what’s ahead to tempt your palate. You also have to ponder on amazing appetizer choices like Slow Smoked Pulled Pork Nachos, Truffled French Fries or Fried Goat Cheese. Sassy salads include Rocket Arugula Salad or Toasted Cous Cous Veggie Salad. Entrées cooked over a wood-fired grill are Farmhouse Ale Marinated Hanger Steak and Hickory Smoked Baby Back Ribs. Their sandwiches should have a fancier name. No mere bits of bread slapped with a filling, these are delicious, delectable and oh so delightful! There’s a Bison Sloppy Joe, Charlie Parker’s Reuben and Cheesy BLT, to name a few, and all come with fries! (That’s a big deal as many places charge extra!) Desserts are made on the premises by pastry chef Corrine Slosnerick. And if your date night is a family affair, they have an awesome kids menu too. My daughter craves the pizza, and she’s a picky eater! So make a date to be Jolly, snuggle by the fire, feast on some crazy good food, drink hand-crafted ales and keep a watchful eye for Genevieve, the looming Ghost. Oh what the heck, maybe even join the Mug Club, but don’t even think about swiping Carter’s.

Magic Mountain

Making memories for generations It’s hard to believe that Mt. Holiday, one of the most beloved family recreational spots in Traverse City, began with a Prison Labor program, but in 1949 the state-owned land was just that! A group of local businessmen obtained permission to construct a ski run, and wards of the state literally helped clear the way for generations to come. In 1985, it was purchased by Warren and Sue Brosch. After Warren’s death in 1999, Sue placed the area up for sale. With fear that the cherished Mountain would be developed and lost forever, a team of passionate volunteers formed the non-profit corporation Mt. Holiday Inc. to raise the funds to buy it, setting the lofty goal of $1.5 million.

Tom Hall, Denny Hoxsie and Dave Kipley were the instrumental leaders in this huge task that literally began with a grassroots drive to raise the money. Tin cans sat on top of business counters all throughout the community, and the community rose to the occasion. Today, Mt. Holiday still exists on donations and revenue alone with no federal funding. It is one of only a handful of true nonprofit ski resorts left. And because of this, there is a sense of community, ownership and pride—there’s a genuine love for this Mt. Holiday Place. Another challenge they faced was being dependent on Mother Nature alone, who is unpredictable at best. Mt. Holiday started out as a 90-day operation, with the place up and running midDecember to March. It would actually sit empty for the rest of the year. But since it is perched right in the middle of the Mt. Holiday Development packed with families craving recreation, it made sense to plan for expansion, updates and more seasons of outdoor use. Over the years, they have raised money to install a new kitchen, revamp the lodge, add mountain biking trails, and more. These vast improvements made it possible for the bar and restaurant to open year-round. And just last year, the board made the commitment to install a rip-roaring zip line. The goal was two part, provide year-round revenue and enhance the community with another fun pastime. While they now can boast being open all year, the 90-day season that will soon begin after that first big snow is as magical as Disney’s Magic Kingdom. The entire place shimmers with the pure Excitement of Snow Much Fun! “It’s not a place where parents bring their Kids. It’s Kids that bring their parents!” says Michelle Konstanzer, the food and beverage manager. Families are everywhere, moms, dads, grandparents, toddlers, tweens and lots of teens. There’s a wonderful sense of family spirit in this safe haven to play for the day. You’ll see everyone from rosy-cheeked and bundled-up tykes experiencing their first day on mini skis to stylin’ snowboarding pro teens on the rails catching Big Air to impress their peers.

Our own daughter Teaghan the day of her first ski lesson, we loved Paul her instructor and so did she. The Mountain that’s snow much fun! The tubing mountain is perfect for little ones.

The families all know each other and watch out over everyone, too, so it always feels just like a big extended family reunion. Even the staff treats the kids as their own, because what’s so unique about this little mountain is the children in the community have literally grown up on it. “Year to year we see them grow up and then they even want to work here,” says Michelle. And once they’re grown and married with their own kiddos, they return to recreate the childhood memories they treasure. It’s more than a place to just ski; it’s a winter home away from home creating many people’s Happy Place! The awesome staff is what really makes the experience rare and eventful. In the winter they employ around 140. Theresa Galante has been the executive director for four years, and before that she sat on the board. It’s the eighth season for Michelle. They laugh. “It’s run by Women!” they note, pointing out that they hold the two major positions! Their great staff is handpicked and many return every season. Mike Wolf who runs the ski school has been skiing on this Mountain for 40 years.

“We run a ski school, and also give 200 ski scholarships a year to less fortunate kids.” Wells Irrigation plows the parking lot! The red-coated Ski Patrol members are also volunteers, who are critical; you can’t turn on your lifts until you have first aid certified responders present. Then there are the board members and executives, and what non-profit could ever exist without the all-important Fundraisers? Countless people and hours are spent to raise the funds needed. It’s kind of like an old fixer-upper house; the infrastructure costs to keep all this plodding along are huge. A new groomer would cost $150,000 but they spend $15k-20K a season to pump along the old one. The mountain actually gets to stay younger and family focused because. as Michelle says, “Once the teens start driving, they go somewhere else. They can get to Crystal or Boyne, because they finally have wheels.” If you visit on a race day, you’ll see these little balls of fury flying down the mountain at light speeds. The race team age actually beings at 5! They have no fear and are competitive as heck with the proud parents beaming. You can see, too, the little hill where the beginners are and, yes, more proud parents beaming. This is a place that makes kids happy and social. They are outside being healthy, with no technology to distract them. They are spending quality time with family while boosting their confidence through achievement. The Sweet Life Rocks! Local Mom Jaclyn Clever’s adorable kids “rock” a unique look around the bay, custom clothes that “rock” Michigan Pride! Her family business is Sweetwater Threads and it’s inspired by a love for the Great Lakes and Pure Michigan. The logo itself is ingenious, created by husband Bryan. It’s innovative yet simple, combining the state shape, with the state stone, the coveted gem the Petoskey Stone. It quite literally Rocks! Like all parents who shamelessly parade their cute kids (they are Gerber Baby Gorgeous) originally they just put the logo on onesies for their son, and as he grew, so did the sizes. The whole family is Rock Star good looking, so they made bigger sizes and all modelled the look! The compliments were oohs and aahs galore, and last Summer they jumped into Sweetwater as a real business! They both have regular jobs but its “all hands on deck,” even applying the logo’s personally, and Jaclyn being a savvy mom, makes all the kids clothing Preshrunk! They’ve scored a few retail locations but the entire collection is also online! They even help preserve the Sweetwater they so love. For every online purchase they donate $1 to the Alliance for the Great Lakes. Their dream is for SWT to soar and open a surf shop, in Petoskey of course! Ski Swap Ski Stuff isn’t cheap, and it’s a long winter!! The Grand Traverse Ski Swap is a hot ticket in town. Entrance to the sale is by ordered entry tickets that are distributed Saturday morning at 7 a.m., and eager buyers have been known to start lining up a couple of hours prior to ticket distribution. This year’s event is Nov. 15−16, note that equipment drop off is Nov. 14 at West Middle School, 3950 Silver Lake Road. The event usually draws 10,000 items, and the Ski Club receives a commission on all sales. Modern conveniences “revealed” With the trend towards everything vintage, we are challenged to come up with creative ways to hide all of our modern conveniences. Paneled appliances have long been popular, but the appliances that don’t offer that as a standard option require “creative solutions” to make them accessible, but tucked away when not in use.

Pocket door hardware is readily available in many sizes and weight limits. Typically thought of for TV cabinetry, in the proper application it can serve many purposes. Baking Centers or Breakfast Central are 2 areas I am often designing into kitchens. These areas hide a variety of small appliances and baking or breakfast supplies. They are opened fully to handle the task at hand and then can be closed up completely when the kitchen needs to be ready for guests or cleaned up and put away. Front Load Washers and Dryers make it possible for us to install them undercounter easily. But what about the view from other rooms into the laundry room? Just like any other large appliance opening, a little creativity and engineering can go a long way. Using the same type of hardware in a custom application allows us to place doors over the appliances that can be shut when they are not in use to hide them away. The biggest change for hiding TVs have simply come from the size (width) of the cabinetry in comparison to the depth. We all love that TVs have become so slim. But for those of you that still want to hide them, a 65” wide cabinet that is only 4” deep does not give us space to pocket doors back. Using more of a bifold operation can be just the right approach here. Angela Goodall is the lead designer and co-owner of Kitchen Choreography with her husband Mike.

So, push your designer to think outside of the box of possibilities when it comes to your function vs. Design of each space. Some of the greatest solutions are created because the client asked for one.

Happy Holidays and Welcome into the Lutz Family Home. It’s a unique place where the joyous spirit of the season is literally in the family’s roots. Chris Lutz grew up stomping around Blue Spruce and Douglas Fir on a historic Northern Michigan Christmas Tree Farm that was


founded in 1895 by his Great-Grandfather from Germany. A few generations later, the Christmas Tree Farm is now carried forward by Chris’ brother. Chris left the forest behind and “branched out,” attending the University of Michigan. He graduated with an MBA and a great job offer, then TIMBER—he fell for his sweetheart Kristin! Chris’ Northern Michigan seeds were still calling him home, so the couple uprooted and moved to Traverse City. Once there, their own little family tree sprouted with three awesome kids: Wyatt, 21, Sophie, 19, and Isabel, 16. Kristin’s parents and a sister were inspired to eventually plant roots here, too. And it is still a beloved family tradition to take a pilgrimage to the family farm to cut down the perfect Lutz Christmas tree year after year. (The Griswolds have nothing on this family!) While Chris was carving out a successful career in the big world of Finance, Kristin’s path was more vivid and creative. After being a buyer in Chicago, her inner Martha Stewart started to flourish and bloom in home decorating. She had a natural gift for style and could whip up some Dazzle and Wow in any space she touched! “The projects started to get bigger and more fun, and I finally realized I have to get paid for this,” Kristin recalls. As she says, “I kind of fell into it.” She has been published twice in national magazines, and she just started collaborating with Cedar Creek Interiors in Traverse City. “It’s the first time I have actually worked with one specific place,” Kristin says. With Kristin’s influence, Cedar Creek Interiors is “branching out” with new furniture lines and exciting projects that they are working on together. One is the highly anticipated new Winery (Bonobo) of local, much loved HGTV superstar himself Carter Oosterhouse. That has to be a lot of pressure! But as we step inside Kristin’s own haven of a home, you’ll see she’s got killer taste! 54

Their home is close to the base of Old Mission Peninsula. This was a deliberate move they made a few years ago—originally, they lived further up. They wanted to be closer to town for the kids’ school, sports and social stuff. The huge new house immediately bustled with football parties, pasta dinners, youth groups and everything inbetween. “We love to entertain. What’s the use of having a big house if you don’t use it?” Kristin says. In fact, Chris’s 50th birthday bash is one for the ages. They took out all the furniture to make room for a live band. Plus, ever the interior designer, Kristin had the crazy idea to also fully wallpaper the entire living room three days before the party! Most people barely manage some light dusting, and maybe they buy some new candles. Not Kristin! See a pattern here on how much she adores with wild abandon what she does for a living? Kristin has had some sensational fun making this house a home. This is her showpiece. It reflects who she is, what she does for a living, and how much she cherishes the art of everything looking beautiful. “I am a self-confessed Girly Girl!” she reveals. Hey, at least she admits it! It’s truly admirable. Most people wouldn’t know their style if it hit them on the head. Many are still trying to find it, evolve with it or, worse, think they have it! (Alert: Seek a Professional! This is when you desperately need an Interior Designer to hold your hand.)

Kristin’s eye-popping home décor is a myriad of brilliant brainstorms that ooze out of every nook and cranny. It’s a stupendous visual feast! (I don’t think she sleeps much.) There are personal touches, designer elements, custom-made and off-thewall kooky stuff, mismatched, and then classic and simple timeless regalia just to throw you off!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Poor husband Chris, living in this girlie, effeminate universe! Apparently, he is fine with it! Kristin tells us he also owns a cabin in the woods. That’s his man cave serenity retreat. “It’s where he plays farmer,” she says. But he did throw her a curveball, one day coming home from a downstate trip with Ralphie the humongous buffalo head that hangs proudly in the family room.

Kristin describes her style as Eclectic. “I used to be Very Shabby Chic, but then moved into French,” she says. Kristen could probably make up a whole new style. Who makes these rules anyway, right? She also admits she loves to move and change her accessories all the time. One day it’s minimalistic, and another day it’s go all out!

Kristen was lucky that the bones of their palatial, Victorian-looking home were already refined, meticulously built and designed by the couple before them. The kitchen is stunning, with elegant custom cabinets and striking granite countertops—it even came complete with its own fireplace. The wooden floors were spectacular. “Even the tile was good,” says Kristin. So once their furniture was moved in, all

that was left to do was add the interior design elements of what she does best. First, says Kristin, “I changed all the lighting. It can make or break a room.” Then came the walls. With her impeccable taste, she chose stylish wallpapers and paint hues before adding the final touch—unique Art. Hanging in the kitchen is an original by Kristin’s sister, and a darling painting of their three children hangs in the dining room. Also gracing many walls are Sunburst mirrors; Kristin is addicted to them, and she has never met one she doesn’t like! “I like how they are modern, girlie, and how they bounce light in a room,” she explains. Another signature element Kristin sprinkles around her home are monogrammed accents, welcoming you right at their front door upon entering. The “L” entwined with the “K” and “C” sets the tone for “a once upon a time” story of whose home you are entering, complete with a “happily ever after” ending as you leave. Their spacious house is a little less lived in these days with Wyatt and Sophie away at college, leaving just Isabel, a junior in high school, at home. This emptier nest syndrome leaves a quieter house for Kristin (except for her two dogs) and more time to ponder design, in-between client projects of course. More wallpaper maybe? But the Silent Nights won’t last long. ‘Tis the season for a bustling house. As the holidays draw closer, kids will return home, decadent decorations will deck the halls, friends and family will be warmly welcomed and parties with pizzazz will rock the HOUSE DOWN! Dawn of Winter This shelf of ice was precarious. Winter was still young, and as such, I had to watch my footing for soft spots, open water, and slick ice. I was struck by the beauty of the fingers of ice that stretched across the cold waters of Northport Bay. As the sun neared the horizon, the ice around me began to glow with the cool colors of dawn.
