What more can I do? At the Gather for Good Luncheon, Baylife Associate Editor Jennifer Lett and myself with the Inspirational Keynote Speaker John O'Leary.
B
ack in November I attended the Gather for Good Luncheon. We live in such a big-hearted community that even though it was smack bang in the middle of a busy work day, the banquet room at the Hagerty Center was jam-packed. We knew we would hear stories that would be cause to celebrate, but what caught the room by surprise was the enigmatic guest speaker, John O’Leary. In a 25-year sales career, I have heard my share of motivational speeches and seminars, and I consider myself pretty savvy. Still, I had never heard of him, and I had no clue what was about to happen. He was mindful that the program had fallen behind, and promised to stay on message. He told us a devastating story about a little boy who was traumatically burnt while literally playing with fire. The boy suffered burns over 90 percent of his body and wasn’t expected to live. The room just STOPPED at this point, falling so silent you could have heard a pin drop. The little boy was the man that stood before us. Everyone was captivated by the tragedy and adversity he had suffered, but also by his engaging humor and joyful spirit. He told the story of the power of one person who changed his life, who helped him fight to stay alive when all odds were against him, who kept asking the question, “What more can I do?” His underlying message to us was to always ask, “What more can I do?” All too quickly, his time was up, but I could have listened all day. I was so moved and completely brought to tears that it was hard to pop right back up to the place of Now. He had taken me to a place of calm where the world had stopped, just for a minute, and really delved deep into my soul, asking, “What more can I do?” We always start a new year with hope, aspirations of new beginnings, fresh starts and wanting to feel good. I am going to remind myself to ask that question. It’s not
about setting lofty goals that are unreachable, but simply finding the good in every day and giving where you can and how you can. It’s giving a little time to a good cause, smiling and thinking positive thoughts. I’m not trying to get all preachy on you. We are so lucky to call this area home. It is such a giving community that reaches out and wraps its arms around charities like Goodwill, The Women’s Resource Center, The Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center, Big Brothers Big Sisters, etc. There are hundreds of non-profits that work tirelessly, and they always need volunteers. Find one you have a connection to or passion for and ask yourself, “What more can I do?” Quite frankly, that question can be applied to anything in your everyday life—your kids, your health, your home, your marriage, even appreciating a Michigan Winter. And we have all the answers in this issue! (Really!) Embrace family time by getting out to all of the fun places described in these pages. Motivated to get fit? The Michigan Runner Girl gives tips here! Treat your home to some TLC at the Home Expo, and be wowed by Pam and Al Ruggirello’s home enough to stash away a dream home fund. Marriage is always a work in progress! But that’s the love of your life! Make time for a hot date night at Pepe Nero. And what about the awe and wonder of Mother Nature in all its glory? Let us appreciate winter (and not whine about it). To get you started, we have a beautiful gallery of images by Mark Miller. And be inspired by BayLIFE Love! We are thrilled to launch this visual page in collaboration with talented photographer, doting dad, amazing hubby and dear friend Chris Klau. He asked us, “What more can he do?” So here’s a plan for 2015: What more can you do? Be so HAPPY that when others look at YOU, they become HAPPY, too! And that’s a pretty good start!

Style Market A designer, très chic indoor Farmers Market just made its debut recently in Elk Rapids! The River St. Farm Market is an eclectic mix of down-home fresh wares in a rustic, restored space. It’s the new go-to place for organic produce and all things homemade! It came about as the brainstorm of Interior Designer Kim Hooker of Cedar Creek Interiors and Waterside Properties after a renovation had exposed the space’s true character: 19th-century brick and original red oak floors. Also, the Farm Market is adjacent to Cedar Creek’s new designer showroom. The market is already creating quite the buzz. It’s certainly one of the most stylish around, and will soon be offering even more farm market wares. Think of it as the ultimate one-stop shop! Weekends from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. • 212 River St., Elk Rapids.

Bonobo BUZZ After years in the making, Bonobo Winery, founded by brothers and longtime Traverse City natives Carter and Todd Oosterhouse, is finally open for business! We at Baylife were lucky enough to get a preview a few weeks ago at the Founders Party, and we can personally attest to the wonderful wines (our fave was the Chardonnay Stainless), amazing service, and truly a different concept in a wine-tasting experience! Pull up a stool at the bar or cozy up on couches by the huge fireplace. It’s the perfect place for a lingering date night or chilling with friends. Both brothers love to entertain and wanted a space that reflected a modern, relaxed feeling where friends could gather, boasting even a library and a gallery. Small plates are promised to premiere in Spring, completing your palate adventure, with no other than famed celebrity chef Mario Batali as the Food Curator—he happens to be a personal friend of Carter’s! Mario has begun to send recipes to test with the wines, to be developed and refined over the winter season. Come the warmer weather (far, far away from now!), the sprawling space outside will open for outdoor seating to spectacular views. Go wine a little at Bonobo. You’ll be glad you did. 12011 Center Road, Traverse City • Bonobowinery.com

Darric Newman is the wine aficionado and co-owner of Folgarelli’s Market and Wine Shop
If you are a fan of Riesling and interested in trying quite possibly one of the most unique wines produced from this grape, then you must give Ice Wine a try. While there are other varietals used to make ice wines, by far the most widely used grape is certainly Riesling. Ice wine in its traditional form is not necessarily produced every year, but only in those years that the weather permits. The grapes are left on the vine well after harvest allowed to freeze and concentrate, creating a sweetness and flavor unlike any other wine. For wineries only producing this wine in the traditional method, the grapes can only be harvested after freezing naturally on the vine then pressed eking out a very small amount of juice compared to those very grapes harvested months before. There are only a handful of growing regions around the globe that are capable of pulling off this magical fete, Canada and Germany being the two largest producers and our own Northern Michigan falling right behind. You can enjoy ice wines from Chateau Chantal, Chateau Grand Traverse, Black Star Farms and a few others, but you may have to look hard as quantities are very limited, as you would expect. We also carry Ice Wines from the Finger Lakes area, Germany and the West Coast of the US. These wines are perfect around the fire this winter or for a little après ski treat. Enjoy the winter. “Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t – you’re right.” HENRY FORD
Michigan Runner Girl Challenges YOU! Discover Your Inner Athlete in 2015 From hikers and runners, to cyclists and paddlers, we’re a community of active people here in northern Michigan--our scenic landscape, after all, makes for the ideal outdoor playground year-round. As someone who came to an active and healthy lifestyle later in life, I’ve dabbled in all kinds of outdoor exercise, with running being my favorite. Logging miles is my way of staying strong, mentally and physically, and along the way I’ve also unearthed a passion for encouraging others in this sport--running is an activity that just about anyone can learn to love.
A few tips for getting started: INVEST IN A GOOD PAIR OF RUNNING SHOES. The staff at local running specialty stores can help you find the right fit. TAKE IT NICE AND EASY. Inject a few minutes of slow running into your walks, building up to longer stretches of running over time. Remember to listen to your body and don’t push yourself too hard, too quickly. RUN WITH FRIENDS. You’ll feel motivated to keep running, especially in the beginning, when you get together with others. A running partner can prove invaluable, particularly when you’re getting out of your warm bed to run on dark and cold mornings. JOIN A RUNNING 101 CLASS. If you’re feeling a bit intimidated about joining a running club or simply want more information about running, consider signing on for Running 101 at Running Fit in Traverse City. The next six-week, six-session class starts at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 11 and includes a group run followed by a 30- to 40-minute clinic. Go to runningfit.com/ classes/running-101 to learn more.

MOVERS & SHAKERS
Laura Oblinger Chief Operating Officer at the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WHAT YOU DO AT THE TRAVERSE CITY AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE? I lead strategic development for the Chamber’s programs and services, membership strategies, and its branding and communications process. In addition, as COO, I am responsible for leading and managing the Chamber’s comprehensive strategic plan. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE NEW YEAR? Professional growth. By the end of next year, I will be very close to finishing my MBA. 2015 MARKS THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TRAVERSE CITY AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE… CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THIS? This is really a time to celebrate the history and tradition of this organization and its members, and ultimately their impact on the community. There’s so much to look back on and be proud of, and so much excitement for what lies ahead in our next 100 years. The anniversary creates a chance to pause and celebrate. ARE THERE ANY "WORDS OF WISDOM” YOU LIVE BY? Find your talent, your gifts, your passion, and give them your most positive energy. Go for your dream, believe in yourself and others will follow. If you've got a quality and you've got a drive, and you've got a passion and you can see yourself doing it, then by all means do it! TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF WE DON’T KNOW? I have OCD – don’t ever mess up my office! Everything has a home. People who work closely with me know this well and it offers a platform to have a little fun around the office. 18
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2015 | BAY LIFE NORTH
Wayne Schmidt State Senator for Michigan’s 37th District CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT WHAT YOU DO? As the State Senator for Michigan’s 37th District it is my job to represent the interests of northern Michigan and the eastern U.P. in Lansing, hold state government accountable to the voters, and work on the immediate and long-term public policy issues that impact our region, such as rural healthcare, tourism, agriculture, and energy. As the Senate Commerce Committee Chairman, it is also my responsibility to find solutions to economic problems that affect Michigan as a whole and to fix things that are broken within state government which interfere with a person’s ability to do business in Michigan. IS THERE ONE THING YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? My wife and kids. A legislator’s schedule can be very tough on their family, whether it’s being gone several nights a week down in Lansing or spending weekends on the campaign trail. But I have been blessed to have such a strong and supportive family network that has allowed me to serve in political office; I truly could not do what I do without their love and encouragement. WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WAS YOUR BIGGEST BREAKTHROUGH MOMENT? Winning my first election in 1998 to serve on the Grand Traverse County Board of Commissioners. Having volunteered on political campaign since I was in high school, it was a great thrill to find out I could win an election myself and eventually gave me the confidence to enter into state-level politics. TELL US SOMETHING ABOUT YOURSELF WE DON’T KNOW: I am a classic car enthusiast and enjoy visiting a lot of the auto shows in the Midwest region. I have also been slowly restoring a 1969 Oldsmobile 442 convertible, which occasionally makes an appearance in a parade every now and then, though it still needs quite a bit more elbow grease to get it up to a more reliable condition. PEPE NERO
The Jewel of the North In a quiet, unassuming corner of the Mercato in the Villages at The Grand Traverse Commons lies a hidden gem just waiting to be discovered by the masses. The sparkling diamond in the rough is Chef Giorgio Lo Greco’s dream-come-true restaurant, Pepe Nero. This is a pure Italian/Mediterranean experience that is not to be missed if you call yourself a lover of amazing food.
Left: Scrumptious Rigatoni Al Forno The Mercato entrance to Pepe Nero Grand Marnier Panna Cotta Top: A little touch of Italy Right: Your Hosts Chef Giorgio and Monica Lo Greco Bottom: A Real Italian Espresso!
Giorgio and Monica make a terrific team, welcoming guests in and treating everyone like family!
Your first impression alone captures the very essence of a little café in Sicily. The ambiance here, including an Italian speaking staff and décor, is wonderfully authentic. Choose a coveted table under the vintage stone arches of the Meracato, oozing with character where people-watching is a part of the charm. Pepe Nero’s charismatic owner is Sicilian native and chef Giorgio Lo Greco. He was born and raised in Palermo, Italy, where he began cooking at the age of seven in the family kitchen. Later, he worked at his uncle’s famed restaurant in Sicily and then became a Top Chef on luxury cruise ships that took him all over the world. As Giorgio shares, “I never attended any formal culinary programs, but since a young child, I remember spending a lot of time in my grandmother’s kitchen. Looking back at all the wonderful learning experiences with her, it turned out to be the best school I could ever attend.” He is so proud of his heritage and how it is celebrated in his cooking style. “My kitchen is the complex result of history and memories of
family, tasty dishes of my grandmother, scrumptious flavors of my mother’s sauces and beautiful pasta made by a loving aunt.” You have a bird’s-eye view from the bar of the beautiful dishes that emerge from Giorgio’s Kitchen at Pepe Nero. Giorgio proudly presents real European cuisine with those secret family recipes handed down generation to generation. Everything on the menu is freshly prepared and lovingly made to order for each and every guest, including delicious pastas, salads and stews. The sauces are bursting with flavor, and entrées like Veal Scallopini with mushrooms are mouthwateringly delicious. The perfect pastas made fresh in the kitchen boast heavenly choices like Wild Mushroom Agnolotti, Linguine with Clams, and Rigatoni with Meat Sauce. Giorgio masterfully creates these enticing flavors that will keep you coming back for more. The most famed dish of all is the most simple: the Linguine Alla Carrettiera with garlic-drizzled extra virgin olive oil and Italian parsley. Giorgio swears by it. “My kitchen reflects memories of family, tasty dishes of my grandmother, scrumptious flavors of my mother’s sauces and beautiful pasta made by a loving aunt.”
And when Al Ruggirello, whose home is featured in this issue, heard we were going to Pepe Nero, he couldn’t stop complimenting Giorgio. “His is the closest food I have ever tasted that compares to my Sicilian mom’s cooking. We love going there,” he said. The menu is filled with regional Italian dishes, but the emphasis is on Sicily. While you savor every fresh, delectable bite, pair it perfectly with boutique-style exclusive Italian wines from their 90 percent Italian wine list. If wine is also your passion, make a reservation Jan. 14 for their Tuscan Region Five-Course Wine Dinner. They take place every month and the last two sold out! Your perfect ending should include lingering over an exquisite Italian dessert menu. The cannoli are scrumptious!! Made with the best ricotta cheese ever, they’re creamy and smooth and made from Giorgio’s own recipe with a hint of lemon. Another pride and joy is the Grand Marnier Panna Cotta, and pair your dessert with a real Italian Espresso! Your Date Night at Pepe Nero should not be rushed, and we highly recommend you make a reservation. It’s an intimate, cozy setting and a secret some foodie lovers have already discovered since the restaurant opened in August 2013.

Adding to the entire fabulous food and pampering experience is the amazingly attentive staff, which includes Giorgio’s lovely wife, Monica, who was born and raised in Romania—she speaks four languages, including fluent Italian and English! While Giorgio makes the magic happen in the kitchen, Monica greets every guest warmly with a big smile and a Ciao! She can often be found floating elegantly from table to table, making sure your visit is the best it can be. Their love story began when they met working together on a cruise ship; apparently, Giorgio played hard to get (not for long, though), and together they travelled the seas for a few years. They married in 2008 right here in Northern Michigan at Giorgio’s friends’ place, The Ciccone Winery! They make a terrific team, inviting in guests and treating them like family all the while pursuing this, their American Dream! Pepe Nero is Magnifico. Note: Look soon for cooking classes by Chef Giorgio, and make sure to visit through January and February. They are jetting off to Palermo for the entire month of March, returning April 1. 800 Cottage View Dr. • 231-929-1960 • Pepenerotc.com

MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Mark Miller As a T.C. native who moved to Empire in 2004, I never really understood or appreciated the beauty this area offered, until I had moved away. After graduating from Traverse City High School I joined the army, taking me to Missouri, Texas, Germany and Florida. Coming back to TC was a blessing. My father was stationed at Empire Air Base in 1958-59 and I thought it kinda cool that I ended up there too. I love hiking the trails and beaches, and usually have “Major,” my 6 yr. old Belgian Tervuren with me. He is featured in many of my photographs. He is a very friendly dog, although a bit timid around strangers. I hope you enjoy looking at my photos as much as I enjoy taking them! – Mark Editor Note: You may have also admired Mark’s other work in your home! He is the co-owner of T.C. Mirror & ShowerDoor.

Life takes you to Unexpected Places – Love brings You Home
Divine Wine The color experts at Pantone have debuted their 2015 Color of the Year—it is the strong, warm color “Marsala.” Described by Pantone as “a naturally robust and earthy wine red,” the hue walks the line between a rustic brown and a bold berry. We love the warm, cozy quality of this enveloping shade and can see it perfectly paired with a deep teal or navy blue accented by bright pops of brass. Here are a few ideas for inspiration with the suddenly new hot hue.

Golf is not a sport. It’s a way of life. Live it, love it! Just ask Pam and Al Ruggirello. Had it not been for their love of golf, they would have never been at a Golf Expo held in November 2000. There, just by chance, they were handed some literature for a place called Lochenheath about to be developed! After deciding this was every golfer’s dream, scoring a hole in one, they bought a desirable lot and got in at the ground level. A few years later, they built their Forever Home, the place where they now spoil their granddaughter Amelia, entertain friends and family, watch the dynamic sunsets reflected on the dazzling blue bay from almost any room in the entire house, and—oh, yeah—play a whole lotta golf! Of course, Golf wasn’t always so prominent in their lives. Pam and Al met way back in the disco era ‘70s at Central Michigan University. Pam became a student teacher and Al went into banking. After marrying in 1977, they settled down in Royal Oak and lived just four blocks away from the farmhouse where Al grew up. They were blessed with two sons, Michael and Anthony, and found themselves like many other Michigan families heading to the beautiful North end of the state to vacation in summer. It was on these memorable trips that they decided their future: “We want to live Up North AND live on a golf course!” After the pamphlet that promised Golf Utopia with a view of the bay at the grand sounding Scottish Highland-like place Lochenheath (Scotland is renowned as The Home of Golf), they hopped up north to claim their stake of land! What they found was Pure Michigan! A sweet farmer drove them through orchards to show them the lot on the 7th hole. He also pointed out his mom’s house on a higher lot. They looked in pure awe at the breathtaking view and bought the lot next door to his mother’s house, #28! 48

Life was going well, so in 2004 Al sold his banking business and they got to work on their Dream Home! Pam had a stack of literally 30 years’ worth of ideas from every home magazine imaginable, and before meeting with their builder and designers, Al had a request, “The only thing I ask is go and walk the property!” Pam had an idea of the style of home she wanted. Amazingly, when they met the designer, he had sketched it almost exactly the same! “The whole premise of the house is the view,” says Al. Almost the entire backside of the house that overlooks the bay is completely wide open with palatial windows, doors and even a glass deck, optimizing the true gift of nature outside from almost any angle. Even their shades don’t hang down and are custom designed to hide inside the curved, elegant molding above. They also wanted their home to be casual and elegant, so even the floors throughout were handpicked with a purpose. They chose hand-scraped Hickory made by the Amish! “We didn’t want people to have to take their shoes off, and it’s even tough enough for golf shoes!” says Al. It really is beautiful to look at, too, and contrasts perfectly with the stately, solid Alder doors throughout.

When you have 30 years to plan your perfect living space, there’s a plethora of innovative ideas, and Pam and Al’s home incorporates really fun ones and very practical ones, too. For instance? A stunning butler’s kitchen that is perfect for entertaining. The upstairs laundry room chute that connects right to their master closet. The master bath shower that is entirely wheelchair accessible. The master closet top hanging racks that have a “Pull Down” lever for easy reach. A built-in sauna that awaits downstairs. The house has two heating systems that include radiant floor heating. The wine cellar holds 500 bottles! A golf room is compete with a closet, a sink and stamped concrete floors. (This also houses a lot of trophies!) All three guest rooms are entire suites with full bathrooms, and there’s even a guest laundry room on the same level. The downstairs living space boasts an entire kitchenette; walk right in from the 14th hole for a quick snack or beverage! There is even a full apartment above the garage with its own heating and air conditioning! Did any of these give you some ideas? My head was whirling after my complete tour!

Of course many of these well-chosen details are just practical. Don’t worry, Pam had fun with the pretty stuff, too, decorating, picking out furniture, shades, tile, granite, hardware, etc.—all adding the final and spectacular finishing touches. Paint was a personal preference, too! Magnificent hues adorn the walls, almost an entire color palette; there are 29 different colors of paint throughout house! The focal point of the home without a doubt is the palatial, domed turret that captures your attention when you step into the kitchen; hanging perfectly in the space below is a regal, medieval-looking candelabra. The towering turret is also meticulously faux painted by hand, and natural light floods in from the encased circle of windows that frame it. On the floor below is an exact replica of the gazebo of windows, and the Guest room is named The Turret Room.
We hear guests fight over this room, and the rule is first come, first served to claim it!

Pam carefully choreographed the design of the entire house with the overall style inspired by a comfortable Mediterranean feel, so every day their “golden years retirement” feels like a vacation! The only two exceptions were the garage and Al’s workshop. Here, Al confesses,
“I let my Inner Tim Allen Home Improvement guy go a little overboard.” Mmmm? We will let you be the judge! “I’m a woodworker,” says Al. (He made the shelves in the wine cellar and the cabinets in the golf room.) His crowning jewel of a wood shop lies in a secret man cave under the garage. “This is where the magic happens,” he says, proudly beaming a smile from ear to ear! It’s a complete wood shop and metal shop with underground electric and a vacuum system. It’s like a Home Depot and Lowe’s showroom all rolled into one with every tool imaginable. It’s even a safe room with six sides of cement all around.

“It’s been the greatest experience”
Completing Al’s “Man” side of the house just above is the garage with 10-foot ceilings, a heated floor, hot and cold running water, and Gladiator brand giant-sized freezer and fridge. Of course, the garage houses what else but a treasured golf cart and a hot red Lexus hard-top convertible that the couple love to take out on special trips to Mackinac for lunch. Their home was finished just in time for Christmas 2006, and they cherish being a part of this amazing community, even becoming partners in owning the golf course. They also love dining at the Lochenheath restaurant and rave about Chef Joe George. (But don’t tell anyone, they don’t want it to get too busy!) And they have also become an integral part of the Traverse City community. “It’s been the greatest experience,” says Al. Not a bad life for just reading a pamphlet at a golf show, huh? We want to thank Pam and Al for graciously welcoming us in, and sharing their Living the Northern Dream.
