"Michigan's Beauty is irresistible and uplifting. Her heartbeat

B

ack in Maryland years ago before I ever dreamt that a major move to Northern Michigan was in our future, there sat a clue that it might happen one day. On the coffee table in my husband Tom’s office at Frederick Magazine sat a stunning photography book. The cover was deep purple, and it was full of spectacular photography all captured in Michigan by the author, Todd Reed. My sister-in-law Connie, who has lived in Ludington for almost 40 years, gave the book as a gift, I think, because my husband is an accomplished photographer. Maybe she also gave us this book to remind us of the sheer prevailing wonder of my husband’s home state. A few years later, Tom received another striking Todd Reed book for Christmas, and once again it sat front and center, gracing our coffee table. It’s subconsciously probably one of the many reasons why when we moved our family here in 2010 and decided to publish a magazine, our magazine had to live up to exceptionally high standards of quality with brilliant photography that highlights the magic of Michigan. So imagine our excitement now 10 years later. Todd and his son Brad were introduced to our Baylife magazine, and they were so impressed that they entrusted us with helping to launch their magnificent new book. This is truly an awe-inspiring honor that we didn’t take lightly. On the drive to Ludington to meet them, we recalled that it was on that very same drive from Traverse City four years ago when we dreamt up the magazine in the first place. Things do happen for a reason, I am certain of it, and meeting Todd and Brad in their gallery was yet another inspiring wake-up call, reminding us to celebrate our journey to this point and all of the reasons that we sincerely love what we do.

Todd and Brad were genuinely warm and so very personable, inviting us in like old friends. Inside their gallery, the walls are lined with dazzling images that leave you simply awestruck! “Whiskey Shots and Wine Shots” as Todd lovingly called them. I am guessing a “Wine Shot” means refined and elegant to linger over, and a “Whiskey Shot” is more of action with an edge? The art they capture evokes a feeling from within, and their new book, Michigan: Wednesdays in the Mitten, is a beauty that no coffee table should be without. The honor to help launch it within this issue is both a blessing and a curse, as we wish there were more pages to dedicate to it. But we hope we piqued your interest enough to delve further into their incredible art, and to get to know Todd and Brad.

helps us find our own." – Todd and Brad Reed

The pristine view at Pyramid Point a few weeks ago. My attempt at a Todd Reed "Wine Shot"

So we hope you relish this issue. Maybe the seed was planted long ago from that book on the coffee table? Who knows? But I can tell you for sure that because of Tom’s passion of Northern Michigan photography we have always strived since day one to utilize the magazine as a showcase for introducing our readers to amazingly talented artists who capture Northern Michigan’s raw majestic beauty. These are Photography Phenoms who take Epic shots, like Ken Scott, Robert de Jonge and Pure Michigan billboard superstar John McCormick, as well as aerial photographer Jim Anderson and a long list of other inspirations, who all have day jobs, like John Gessner, Craig Sterken, Jim Sorbie, Jason Hulet, Mark Miller and Chris Klau. Through their eyes, we are all serendipitous. Our magazine page by page is dedicated to continuously celebrating the Baylife, living this Northern Michigan dream through people’s personal journeys, starting new lives, raising a family, creating a business, building a forever home, and even the golden years of retirement. What we all have in common is the natural splendor of where we are lucky to call home—especially while the sun is shining, the bay is sparkling, and the most beautiful place in America is beckoning us in all its glory.

"Shine On" Gala The community came out for an evening of song, enlightenment and celebration all in honor of The Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center, a safe haven for children of abuse. Their first ever Shine On Gala was held at the Inside Out Gallery hosted by the marvelous Miriam Pico and also featured the singing talents of May Erlewine, also on stage were Michael Beery and Christal Frost. The event’s most memorable moment was the entire room in chorus singing “This Little Light of Mine.” How can you help? Working hard for something we don’t care about is called STRESS – Working hard for something we love is called PASSION. ~ Simon Sinek

BUSINESS IS BLOOMING Owner Annie Hill welcomed us into her newly relocated Cherry Hill Boutique at 224 E. Front St. It’s a hop, skip and a jump, just up the street from their old digs, but the view outside her two windows is prime real estate. Just across the street sits Amical, Red Ginger and even the State Theatre! Annie has been a mainstay on Traverse City’s Front Street for 18 years, opening her boutique in 1998. And it’s the first place so many people look forward to patronizing when they visit their cottages come summer. The store is fresh, bright and simply dazzling like Annie’s welcoming smile. Inside it’s blooming with dresses, tops and bottoms, and scarves galore in every radiant color of the rainbow, and it highlights Annie’s classic brand, Brighton, with handbags and jewelry. The fashion police would approve, so pop by to add a little pizzazz to your closet. 224 E. Front Street, downtown Traverse City.

More M-22 to Love Venturing out of hibernation and popping to Glen Arbor recently, we noticed that the M-22 building was under construction. Ever nosey, we called the head honchos Katy and Matt Wiesen (owners also of Crystal Lake Outfitters). So here is the Scoop: “After four successful summers of business, we decided it was time to increase our square footage at the M-22 Glen Arbor store. This became the perfect opportunity to revamp and expand our existing building to make it more of a destination within Northern Michigan. The ambitious transformation was made over a four-month period by Cooley Contracting, and we are excited to share the finished product with our customers. Not only have we doubled our retail space, but the expansion has also allowed more space to be dedicated to the M-22 wine tasting portion of our business.” More reasons to meander M-22 and spread the LOVE.

Bob Sutherland has shared they plan to actually launch The Cherry Republic Experience, coming in June. Meet the Babies The Nelson Family, who own and operate The Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm in Frankfort, were busy this past Winter. (Well, maybe the Alpacas have been busier.) While the farm and Alpaca boutique was closed to guests, they were working growing their Adorable Alpaca Fuzzy-Faced Family. About eight little babies will be due this Spring, and the patter of little feet will be all over the farm! It will make for the perfect fun family day out, and mom can even shop! (Editor’s note: Pick up a pair of Alpaca Socks; they saved my frozen toes this winter as a Ski Race Team Mom.) Another accolade Chris Nelson is a proud to mention, “We won the prestigious honor of 2014 Small Breeder of the Year.” Obviously this farm isn’t a secret to the rest of the world. The Festivals Of Summer Northern Michigan has no shortage of festivals to enjoy and certainly there are a number of them focusing on our ever growing number of producers of wine and beer. These events offer up a great opportunity to sample a vast array of products in a fun and festive environment with loads of entertainment. Why try the festivals? Well it’s quite simple really; you have a majority of our producers in one spot showcasing their fabulous products. For example, imagine enjoying a beautiful sunny Northern Michigan day in one of our picturesque towns with more wine than you can shake a stick at. Along with the wine, there are a host of local food vendors on hand with delicious nibbles to enjoy with your choice of wine. I don’t know about you, but this sound almost like heaven. What if I don’t like wine? That’s an easy one as well. Along with the numerous wineries in Northern Michigan, we also have a bunch of talented brewers. So if you are into the ever-growing number of micro-brews, there are festivals just for you. Much like the wine festivals you can enjoy similar settings hosting up live entertainment, art, local foods and of course great beer. No matter how you look at it, if you enjoy food, wine, beer, live entertainment and the wonders of Northern Michigan, there is a festival for you. Comfort is the Enemy of Acheivement

Saddle Up If you are avid cyclist, you’re probably privy to the scenic trails we are lucky to have in our backyard. But armed with Traverse City author Robert Downes’ book, “Biking Northern Michigan” that details over 35 routes, you’ll be inspired to find more roads to conquer. His bike trails had to fulfill two requirements to make the list—Safe and Scenic, or designed to keep you off major highways and leave you free to be in awe of the natural beauty all around like Sleeping Bear, Glen Lake and Walloon Lake. You’re also in great hands with tour guide Bob, who has personally ridden each route and then some. The veteran cyclist and traveler is also an accomplished writer and co-founded The Northern Express Weekly. He made it an easy read with maps, length and difficulty, places to stop and even rider tips. So saddle up, get in gear and take the road less travelled. And as Bob reminds you, bring lots of water! www.planetbackpacker.net

Take the Challenge Did you take up the M22 challenge this year? Nine hundred participants have, and registration was filled in one hour for the Run – Bike – Paddle event now in its 7th year. No worries if you did not. Just make your way June 13 to the event in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Park, recognized as "The Most Beautiful Place in America," and be an avid spectator, cheering on the athletes. You’re sure to experience major inspiration! The M22 was founded by kite boarders Matt and Keegan Myers, in search of epic wind and waves. They also created the brand M-22 to express the common passion for Northern Michigan. M-22 is not just a road; it’s a way of life. It is the feeling you get when you realize there is no other place you would rather be. Now if that’s not “feeling good,” what else is there? M22.com 22

It is the signature event of the Grand Traverse Region. Not only does it drive direct economic impact in the tens of millions annually, the Festival receives millions on global media impressions throughout the year – not just in July. WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT THIS YEAR? The return of the US Air Force Thunderbirds to Traverse City after 25 years. To think that they chose Traverse City as the location of their 4th of July demonstration is truly and honor. YOU SEE A LOT OF CHERRY PRODUCTS, WHAT’S THE MOST UNIQUE THAT’S STANDS OUT? It might sound silly, but the dried cherry. From harvest, to pitting, to drying, the complexity of the process is fascinating. And they are extremely healthy and versatile. I eat them everyday. SERIOUSLY, HOW MANY CHERRY TIES DO YOU OWN? More than two-dozen. Sue Judson makes a new signature tie every year. She has been doing it for more than 25 years. WHAT’S YOUR SUPERPOWER? My family. I couldn’t do what I do without the support of my wife, children, and parents. ANY WORDS OF WISDOM THAT YOU LIVE BY? “Do something – even if it’s wrong.” I had a boss who used to say that a lot. You can’t sit around waiting for life to happen. You won’t always be right, but you learn from the experience and move on. WHAT’S SOMETHING THAT WOULD SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU? I share my birthday with John Chapman (Johnny Appleseed). 24

Allison Beers
Owner of Events North & Put Your Phone Down! WHAT BROUGHT YOU TO NORTHERN MICHIGAN? My husband Adam is from Traverse City. I fell in love with Traverse City when we met and after four years in Philadelphia we wanted to move home to Michigan. I’m so thankful everyday that we chose here instead of the Detroit suburbs where I grew up! WHAT IS THE LARGEST EVENT YOU’VE EVER PLANNED? While living in Philadelphia I planned the opening of the Philadelphia Eagles new football stadium. It was in partnership with their nonprofit so it was a fundraising carnival. It was pretty amazing at 24 years old to get to direct their staff and players where I needed them and when and have the run of the stadium! WHAT STANDS OUT AS THE MOST UNIQUE EVENT YOU EVER CREATED? The most unique way I’ve been able to use my expertise in the industry has been to help open two amazing historical gems in Traverse City. I have been working with the Minervini’s for a year and a half opening Kirkbride Hall. I also helped get The Cathedral Barn at Historic Barns Park open and ready for inquires. I feel blessed to have had an opportunity to work on these projects. YOUR 7 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER MUST HAVE AWESOME BIRTHDAY PARTIES? She has so much fun planning them with me. I think I have a future event manager on my hands. I love working on plans with her. She loves helping me set up! WHO’S YOUR ROLE MODEL, AND WHY? I have a few! I am surrounded by some incredible women in my life. My mom instilled my drive for volunteerism. I was out as a kid side by side with her doing all sorts of things that she signed us up for! One of my very best friends, Bonnie Alfonso, is my sounding board for all things business and life. She is an outstanding business woman and I’m proud to call her my friend. Through serving on the board Rotary Charities, I get to sit in a room on a regular basis with some of the smartest women in town! I love learning from them. WHAT’S YOUR SUPERPOWER? Oh geez! I wish I really had one or ten! WHAT’S SOMETHING THAT WOULD SURPRISE US ABOUT YOU? I don’t know if its specific words….. But I consider myself a Lifelong learner and believe that there is wisdom in always wanting to improve and get better. Building relationships are key. You get out of it, what you put into it! LOCHENHEATH

Be Seen on the Green NEWS FLASH! Golf is back; its Red Hot factor is at boiling point once again. When handsome young Jordan Spieth won the Masters, he was instantly catapulted to worldwide fame—and Golf along with him. Not since the early days of Tiger Woods has the Golf buzz been so scorching hot! That means the new place to Be Seen is on The Green. LochenHeath is the best green in Michigan, so says Golf Digest, and the fancy Club House Restaurant is the best kept secret in town. Shhh! You don’t have to play golf or be a member to hobnob here, really! Just promise to appreciate fine food, a terrific chef and the sensational view of rolling green hills falling into pristine blue waters of East Traverse Bay, and you’re in!

The members that live and golf at LochenHeath have been privy to this hidden gem for a few years now, and they are a little hesitant to share. But the talents of Chef Joe George are too vast to keep sequestered, and we twisted their arm and their golf clubs to let us infiltrate. A trip to dine here begins impressively as you enter through the palatial stone gates of the LochenHeath Estates. It’s like a whole other world of grand adventure to embark upon. The spectacular view will take your breath away. Here you are in awe of nature; hues of brilliant vivid greens and turquoise aqua blues sparkle and shine amid the custom-built, stately homes within. Off to the right is the Clubhouse. Remember that you are in golfer’s paradise. Your first encounter will be a richly stocked Golf Shop, its dark wood shelves full of hats, shirts, clubs and brightly colored golf bags. You may even be lucky enough to meet to the resident Golf Pro’s or GM, Kevin O’Brien. Just beyond the Golf Shop is the restaurant. It’s a majestic looking room, formal dining tables and chairs framed at one end by a stone fireplace, and opposite is the elegant bar. The bar stools are compa-

rable to leather armchairs and beckon you to sashay up. With striking mahogany wood throughout, the ambience is very dignified. It’s as if you’ve been invited inside a secret club. The quality of the golf course and the quality of the food are both equally important to the owners of LochenHeath, and the patio view for outside dining is their coveted crowning jewel, overlooking the 18th green and beyond the 17th fairway and East Bay glistening in the background. Make a note to sit here and ponder a special 2015 cocktail, a Sunkiss, Passionate Heat or maybe a Jamaican Haze? Yes, Please. I’ll have two of each. (Make sure you’re driving only a golf cart.) Their other secret weapon is Executive Chef Joe George, a Midland Michigan native who started cooking as long ago as he can remember. “It just came naturally,” he recalls, and now he enjoys teaching his nine-year-old daughter, Charlotte “Her favorite thing to make is Guacamole,” Chef George says, smiling. As a young teenager he started in the kitchen with Marriott Hotels, and by 19 he was already a supervisor. He realized cooking could be a real career and had elevated to being the executive chef at the Midland Country Club when LochenHeath snatched him up exclusively for the Clubhouse MAY/JUNE 2015 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Mouthwatering Signature Dishes include the Famous Firecracker Shrimp, Lemon Crusted Whitefish and the Deluxe Cobb Salad. Restaurant back in 2005. “Food is just common sense to me. I love what I do,” says Chef George. “I believe in Clean, Fresh and Flavorful, and Quality before Quantity.” The kitchen really is his domain here, and it even closed for two years after the Golf Course fell on hard times in the recession. Eleven members/homeowners banded together to save the Golf Course by purchasing it privately, and as soon as the clubhouse reopened again in 2011, Chef George got to step back into his kitchen. “I just couldn’t let someone else take over,” he says. Inside it, he works his vast culinary magic and personally changes the menu items almost daily, creating and formulating delicious

cuisine based on what’s in season, local and fresh. A few dishes are signature items that have to stay put: the famous Firecracker Shrimp, Lemon Crusted Whitefish and the Deluxe Cobb Salad. Guests even request past items, and he is happy to comply. He loves to interact with guests, and if there is something he can pull together from the ingredients in his kitchen, he is all too happy to make it happen. Just like the beautiful Northern Michigan Weather and the green of the golf course, the restaurant blooms seasonally too. Closing right before Christmas, the restaurant reopens mid-April when Chef George works on planning, working with vendors and building a great team. This year they are ready for a busy summer, adding Sous Chef Bryon Figueroa, a super-talented ball of energy and father of three daughters who was previously the Executive Chef at Chateau Chantal. They were hard at work in the kitchen when we visited. You can dine on Chef George’s cuisine for lunch and dinner with brunch on Sundays, in what he officially calls a “Fine dining approach to casual.” And GM Kevin adds that they strive to provide not just a Good Experience, but a Great Experience! The members here are very welcoming, too, not stuffy or pretentious, inviting outside golfers to come and play and experience the wonder of golf. Date night here is no secret anymore! No membership needed, Amazing Food, Stellar View, and Uber-Cool Factor. I’d say that’s a Hole in One! Now that we have let out the secret, maybe make a reservation? Just don’t feel too left out if you don’t drive up in a Golf Cart. LochenHeath Golf Club, 7951 Turnberry Circle Williamsburg, 231.938.9800

MEET THE PHOTOGRAPHERS

Todd and Brad Reed We have the great honor to introduce you to Team Reed. This powerhouse father-and-son duo run a successful gallery out of Ludington, and they are simply giddy to be publishing their biggest and best book ever—their fifth together—entitled Michigan: Wednesdays in the Mitten. Father-and-son businesses are not unusual, but Todd and Brad are truly a phenomenon. Both possess unbelievable skills, the raw talent and expert eye to capture the astonishing imagery they create. They seize the magic of Michigan’s Mother Nature moments, travelling the highways, byways, trails, shores and waters. “Good photography is all about feeling,” describes Dad Todd. “Does it move people?” Todd calls these photographs “Whiskey Shots” or “Wine Shots.” The duo’s secret may be their yin-and-yang synergy. As you might expect, Dad Todd is more old school. “I’m known for the grand scenic, and I like to take The National Geographic-like shots with people, too,” he says. Brad’s style is polar opposite. His portfolio contains many intimate landscapes that are abstract. “I shoot like a sniper. I wait for the shot, 46

the perfect wave, and the deer to jump. I hate editing,” says Brad. They are also entering into their 10th year of teaching workshops. “We pride ourselves on keeping no photographic secrets,” says Brad. As with their last award-winning book, Tuesdays; Wednesdays also offers a textbook technical guide for budding photographers, explaining how the father-and-son duo achieved their awe-inspiring shots. In their monumental book entitled 365, they challenged themselves to shoot 365 days of one entire calendar year. This forced them to make great art, no matter what the weather or conditions. Their next book, Tuesdays, weighed in at a hefty 8 pounds on a coffee table top, and yes, they ventured out, camera in hand, only on 52 Tuesdays. With Wednesdays, they grew the challenge further to expand their shooting to all of Michigan—clearing the calendar and making

“Michigan’s Beauty is irresistible and uplifting. Her heart helps us find our own.” —Todd and Brad Reed Hump Day Showtime! There was more expectation this time around as landscapes weren’t new and fresh, and it pushed them to see the old over again with a fresh perspective. With their focus expanded and eyes wide open, they forged a whole new path and the result is spectacular. “A new day always brings a new view and once in a while, it’s completely different and unforgettable. The same is not the same. Michigan Rocks!” says Todd. We couldn’t agree more. Thank you for entrusting us with sharing your new book. KIDS

That awkward moment when you get caught throwing away your kids toys they never play with!

Taking Flight We constantly remind our daughter how lucky she is to live here, and a fun way to share that message with your little ones is a new children’s book by Northport author Karen Trolenberg. “Flight of Megizzewas” is about a day in the life of a bald eagle soaring above Northern Michigan and taking in all of our beautiful scenery. This adventurous bird goes up to the Mackinac Bridge and also flies over cherry orchards, lakes and meadows. The illustration is by Suttons Bay award-winning wildlife artist Christopher Smith, showcasing the lush landscape, colorful birds and woodland animals. The bird’s name Megizzewas, which means “young eagle” in Anishinaabemowin, a language spoken by native people of the Michigan area, is in honor of an eagle that Karen’s great-great grandfather raised for 13 years near Omena.

Raptors Rock Congratulations to Central High School’s FIRST Robotics Team (a.k.a. Raptors) who just won the State Championship. The students had to design and construct a robot to compete in a game called "Recycle Rush," which included stacking storage totes, placing recycling bins on top and then navigating pool noodles into the bins. The Raptors entered the Championship ranked #25 in the state, having won the Engineering Inspiration Award at the Kettering District Competition and the Team Spirit Award at the Traverse City District Competition. One hundred and two teams competed, and winning the Michigan FIRST Robotics State Championship qualified the Raptors for the FRC World Championship, held in St. Louis April 22-25. Way to go! 48 46

hat better way is there to escape the heat and crowds of summer than to hit the water? And what better way to enjoy, appreciate and explore the Grand Traverse region’s beautifully diverse coastline than from a kayak, canoe or stand up paddleboard? You can do just that this summer – while also raising money for a local non-profit that works tirelessly to protect the Bay we love

With the goal of raising awareness and funds for local charities, the inaugural Paddle Relay Around Lower Michigan will cover 1,100 miles of coastline from Belle Isle to Michigan City from June to August. The Traverse City to Charlevoix segment, from July 5-11, is certain to be one of the most exciting, with all funds raised benefiting The Watershed Center Grand Traverse Bay, which advocates for clean water in Grand Traverse Bay and acts to protect and preserve its 1,000-square-mile watershed. “If you’ve ever dreamed of paddling the length of the peninsula or from one bay to the next, this is your chance, and of course, all for an amazing cause!” says Suttons Bay TC Surfski owner and co-organizer Nick Murray. The fun, casual relay has been divided into 13 80-mile segments, each with shorter legs to maximize participation. The relay itself is non-competitive and paddlers of all abilities

can participate. The only competition is among the charities involved – the one that raises the most money will have its donation matched 100% with no cap by an anonymous donor. “We are certainly hoping to double the money we raise,” says Watershed Center Executive Director Christine Crissman. “The funds raised will support the work we do to be the eyes, ears and voice for water quality in Grand Traverse Bay. As our area experiences unprecedented growth and change, support like this is more important than ever to help us to respond immediately to matters that threaten the health of the Bay.” By Karlyn Haas Marketing & Communication Specialist The Watershed Center of Traverse City

How to Get Involved: • Register today to participate at www.padddlerelay.com. (Registration fees cover event costs, but all paddlers are encouraged to fundraise for The Watershed Center through Crowdrise, an online fundraising platform). • Make a direct donation to The Watershed Center and help them double the funds raised to protect Grand Traverse Bay at www.gtbay. org. Funds raised between now and Aug. 28 go toward their goal. • Become an event sponsor. Visit www. gtbay.org and click on the Paddle Relay tab to see levels and benefits or call 231.935.1514 ext. 5. Get Your Garden (and Kitchen)

ready for the growing season! The blessing we have by living where we do is the simple joys of the changing seasons. The excitement for this month is seeing the green return along with the sunshine. For many of us, it takes our thoughts to the edibles we may try to grow for our family’s enjoyment. Having a garden area “attached” to your kitchen only enforces the idea of growing and eventually preparing, freezing and/or canning the fruits (and vegetables) of your labor. The first consideration I made for where to design my gardens at home was the proximity to the kitchen area, as well as the view of them from the kitchen window. Seeing what is growing and ripening enough to enjoy helps inspire the meal I might make that evening. It also lends an appreciation outside of just the wonderful flavors you might enjoy from your garden. Vegetables and herbs, mixed with flowers for cutting create a beautiful scene from my window. I chose raised beds made from cedar in varying heights for my garden. The containers are attractive all on their own, but having them elevated makes access to your plants an ease without a lot of bending or kneeling. Items to consider for the kitchen area (or close to) are storage needs specific to the garden. Watering cans, plant food and pest repellents along with your gloves and pruners should be handy when you are heading into the gardening space. Don’t forget your basket for gathering your bounty! Just a small cabinet or shelf can house these items. So, start small, but plant a few edibles to enjoy this year. It is amazing the way it can make you feel to truly provide your family with a meal made from food grown in your very own Garden.

There is a golden rule in decorating: Live with what you love. As we are welcomed into Kathy Hanks’ home, we see that hers richly embodies this concept throughout every nook and cranny. She built this home of wood and beams that’s filled with love and dreams on the shores of Lake Michigan 13 years ago. After moving here from Illinois, she found the perfect lot almost by accident while on a drive down a dirt road with her then-teenage daughter. Before the construction, another important rule was set: the house had to evoke treasured childhood memories of summers spent at grandma’s retreat. “It had to feel like a Cottage – But live like a House!” From that beloved cottage of grandma’s is an old heirloom chair that proudly sits in Kathy’s living room; it is just a fragment of the delicately preserved keepsakes in her home that all hold stories of her life’s journey up to now. And so the planning began. “I don’t believe in plopping a house plan you like just on any lot. I think a house should blend with the actual surroundings,” says Kathy. So the exterior is classic, cedar shake-siding accented below with boulders and rocks of Kentucky Bluestone. Just like a traditional cottage in blooming season, the wooden decking around the front door gets smothered in wild colors of begonias, and the scent of perennials like peonies fills the air. This is a clue that Kathy loves to garden, indicating that her creative streak is not limited to just the interior. “People always ask me why I don’t have a pond, though,” says Kathy. “My reply is I have the biggest pond in my backyard with Lake Michigan!” MAY/JUNE 2015 | BAY LIFE NORTH

57

“It had to feel like a Cottage – But live like a House!”

Inside the Dutch front door, Kathy explains it gets a little tight as her original architect said she couldn’t have a basement. It actually ended up not being an issue, so the plans were tweaked accordingly. But it left no grand entrance space, which she creatively has worked around! Above is a little “red squiggle beam that defines my front door,” as Kathy says. Why the beam? “It’s just the way my brain works,” laughs Kathy. On a first glance inside, more quirky surprises emerge like curtain rods of shuffleboard sticks, wooden paddles and croquet mallets, all with hand-sewn curtains attached. Hanging above the dining table is the catch of the day—a bright fish sculpture from a gallery in Suttons Bay that she made into a chandelier! On the door of the broom closet hangs a witch’s broom. In the kitchen, an impressive slab of cottonwood serves as an eat-in area. Many of these unconventional items she finds digging around at local stores like Wilsons Antiques and Odom’s. Her home is just brimming with whimsical elements from any angle; the entire house is a conversation piece that thrives on entertaining family and friends. That’s a lot of wear and tear, so the floors are blanketed throughout in Antique Southern Yellow Pine. The wood was reclaimed from old mills and gives the floors a warm and rich patina, complete with holes “I’m a dog person, too, so any floor would get beat up anyway, so I figured, let’s just start with it like that.” 58

Up above, your eyes feast upon honey-hued, wooden, 27-foot vaulted ceilings. “I knew I wanted Douglas Fir, as I love the way it changes color over time—it’s simple, calm and unpretentious.” Climbing as high as the ceiling is the huge stone fireplace, a bit like Jack’s Beanstalk leading up into the clouds. In hindsight, Kathy regrets that its wall is facing the Lake; her creative logic had envisioned a cozy, glowing contrast to the cold outside on grey days against the choppy whitecaps and angry waters of Lake Michigan, but now she wishes she had just maximized the view. “Every room in the home does have a view, even one of the bathrooms, but only with the door open,” laughs Kathy. A few other tweaks weren’t quite as hard to modify, and as she watched the framing process she seized opportunities for extra hideouts and bonus retreats! One became her sewing loft off her bedroom, and the other, well let’s just call her Best Grandma Ever to her grandsons. She made a tree fort house, complete with a maple tree (one of five in the house). The fort even has a ship’s wheel at the helm for grand adventures sailing around the world, a map on the wall for direction, a window to look out and grandma even keeps old fishing poles nearby and makes paper fish to catch! Her other modification came the first summer after the screenedin porch was constantly damp and full of sand. She changed it into a four-season porch, even adding a fireplace. No waterfront house can be without a mud room, and Kathy’s is fun and functional! Her beloved three dogs lay down their heads and call this room home, so it’s a shared space, but because dogs can’t talk, she got to design it! The floor cleverly resembles a lazy beach walk, the stones are a soft chalky green and the walkway 60

is Maplewood, with sun-bleached grooves perfectly placed too at the foot of her washer and dryer. “I love the look of stone, but hate standing on the cold,” Kathy says. Keeping a beach theme she added nails to a piece of driftwood she found to make a hanger. All the nail hooks are at eye level except one, right at grandkid level. “Mommy grandma has a nail just for me” proclaimed her grandson! Colorful beach towels (she loves and collects them) are folded inside an Elmwood shelf, and all the cabinetry was made custom, including her galvanized metal counter. Every room is made up of cherished keepsakes, precious items all harnessing magical memories that make her smile. Some mementos are from dear family she lost, filling her house with endless love and serving as a constant reminder that each will never leave her thoughts or her heart. Of course, having two grown adults as kids, she also has “Mom Collections.” A windowsill full of clay pots, there’s paintings, awards, a Care Bear collection (yes, really!), and a whole lot more. She also has her own collections positioned around: jars of rare Leland blue stones, muted sea glass and vintage carousel drinking glasses. And of course the five skinned maple trees that subtly blend in every room they grace. Kathy calls her interior design style quirky. It is slightly outside of the norm, and maybe a little wild and wacky. But altogether, it makes Kathy’s home her Happy Place, and when you surround yourself with things and people you love, it’s all you ever need. 62
