kids are back in school. It's so great for them to be with their friends, make new friends, be social in person, grow, flourish, be challenged and be kind of normal again. I know our daughter Teaghan was so excited for her first year at Traverse City West Middle School. Here is hoping everyone stays safe and healthy and it can continue. It was just so wonderful to see my daughter smiling again and see her jump on the bus at 6.37am! (For the record I have not missed the getting up before dawn.) You know that saying about stepping outside of your comfort zone? That great things happen, you’ll grow, you’ll prosper, if you don’t try you won’t know? These unprecedented times were a forced change, not chosen. But it’s unbelievable how people are adapting. Everyone we came across while making this magazine issue is stretching their comfort zones to new heights. I am so thrilled that my husband Tom and I, with our magazine, get to share what your neighbors and friends have been up to through these crazy times and we are excited to shout out to the world in the pages you are about to read!

A safe sanctuary in chaotic times. A conversation with membership director, Susan McElduff How long is the history at Traverse City Golf & Country Club? Since 1915 and still going stronger than ever.
In this COVID-19 world, how important were all the new amenities that opened last year? We had expanded everything. The extra space allowed for social distancing in all areas of the club and its grounds. We still removed stools from the bar and table spacing, for inside dining at 50% capacity. On the 4,000 square feet grand patio we have still been able to follow the rules and have events up to 250 people.
What about the pool? Our outdoor aquatics complex became a life-savor for families this summer. Traverse City had very limited choices for kids, but we had children’s summer activities, junior golf clinics, junior tennis, kids yoga, swimming lessons, and sports camp. Our new memberships for June exploded because of families seeking a safe place to play. 10

What other precautions were adopted? All areas are by a reservation system, so we know who is in the club, with limits on times. Sanitation of golf carts, no rakes, single riders and spaced tee times. Masks provided and sanitizers throughout.
What is the new way to “country club” at Traverse City Golf & Country Club? No stuffiness included. It’s for young and old. Generations of family members gather here. Friendships are made, it’s a personal retreat, for business and personal. It is truly a second home for our members.
What else do we need to know? Our renowned golf course was designed by Tom Bendelow, one of America's pioneer golf course architects. Bob Hope even played here. Our fitness center is state
of the art. We have tennis and pickleball. We are extremely proud of our social events and kids’ activities. You’ll find a wet sprinkler slip and slide party with pizza. Halloween parties, yoga by the pool, wine dinners, date nights, sleigh rides to name a few. Oh, and the fabulous food. If you have never dined at our club, you are missing out. Chef Chris and our excellent staff are also like an extension of our members families.
Winter plans? We can move inside with 6 dining areas to spread out. Utilizing our banquet rooms. For outside we are planning crosscountry, sledding, snowshoe and looking into a skating rink. Not forgetting firepit and heaters. We are trying a Halloween treasure hunt for candy on the golf course, and a Santa parade. Photos shared are from 2019-2020

You moved here from Alpena, Mich. How do you and your family like Traverse City so far? We have always loved the Traverse City area. Like many families who move to this area, we love all of the recreation opportunities that the area provides. I told my wife 15 years ago that if we ever had the opportunity to live here we needed to jump at the opportunity. We feel very fortunate to be here. As TCAPS superintendent, you make decisions on two passionate things people care about; their tax dollars and children. How do you deal with that pressure? We are a public school that educates many students and we represent all of the people in our community. This area has always supported the school system; however, the public expects every dollar that they provide to be used wisely. As a taxpayer and a parent, I have the same expectation and work hard to ensure that happens as the chief leader and learner of the school district. 18

Becoming a new superintendent in the middle of a pandemic, with COVID-19 rules changing every day has to be a challenge. It is a challenge; however, I have great people to work with in TCAPS that have made the transition a good experience. All superintendents across the nation are dealing with the pandemic and we are doing the best we can with the training that we have.
You are a parent too? I have four girls. One in high school, two middle schoolers and one in elementary. They are excited to live close to the sandy beach and to join some of the clubs and other unique activities that the region has to offer.
On a lighter note, tell us something about you that we would never guess? I love to work on home improvement projects. We are excited to do some updates to our new home.
What is one thing you’ve already achieved on your bucket list? I have been fortunate to attend the Super Bowl and many other major sporting events.
Who is your hero? I have always admired my father. He was a hard worker all of his life and I would not be where I am today without the encouragement of both of my parents.
Any lasting words to leave us with? Traverse City is a wonderful place with great people. We are very excited to be a part of this community.
Any words of wisdom you live by? When one door closes another one opens.

How can you help? In 2019, the Women’s Resource Center provided 9,445 nights of safe housing for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The new WRC Thrift store is in addition to their 31 South location, and it’s been open for about six weeks. We asked their executive director Juliette Schultz about the new location. “Our overall operating budget is $2 million, our store location brings in about $250,000. The other is all reliant upon state and federal grants, which are prone to cutbacks. Our goal is to be financially sustainable. For every $2 spent, $1 goes right back to our survivors. That is 50%. This wouldn’t have happened without store manager, Carol Rose. She opened the very first store for us over 30 years ago,” says Juliette. “Every month we also give away about $8,000 of clothing and household items to members of our community that need them most,” says Carol. “Come and shop here too, the stigma of thrift shopping is over.” 1331 S Airport Rd., www.womensresourcecenter.org

Size Matters Farm Club -The hot new farm, brewery, restaurant, bakery and marketplace. Nestled in Leelanau County off the Tart Trail.
Fleet to Farm The visionary owners of the Little Fleet, Gary and Allison Jonas, rocked the east side of Front Street with their food truck and bar garden concept. Now they’re shaking up the Leelanau countryside with 35 acres to stretch out on. Making a trip out, down on the farm, a very chic thing. It’s been a couple of years in the making. Drawing inspiration from a concept they experienced on a visit to Australia, they returned home and hatched a plan. They partnered up with friends, Nic and Sara Theisen, from Loma Farm and their creation was born. It’s a farm, brewery, restaurant, bakery and marketplace. Farm Club is right by the Tart trail, and only 7 miles from downtown. The fire pits are ready to fuel the fun for the cooler temperatures. 10051 S. Since 1945, West Side Beverage has been a Slabtown staple. Owner Tom Gretmacher decided 2020 was the year to be bigger and better! “I’m the fourth owner and I didn’t know the magnitude of this Slabtown community. It has a lot of history; I don’t own it, I’m part of it,” says Tom. The state of Michigan computed that about 20,000 cars pass daily in front of Tom’s store on West Front Street. “Investing back into the building made sense.” He closed down the store, and broke ground on January 3, 2020, for a $1 million renovation, adding two condos and doubling his store space to add a deli and pizza oven. “Everything was coming along great until March,” laughs Tom. The store was closed for eight months, and only recently reopened August 8. “It’s been a whirlwind,” he said. Step inside, it’s sparkly and new, stacked head to toe with an epic array of shiny bottles. It’s an adult beverage utopia! But Toms prize delight is the addition of the deli, offering high end Boar’s Head meats, for mouthwatering sandwiches. And… hot pies of delicious pizza. Gluten free? No problem, he has a 10inch zucchini crust with your name on it! If you’re on the way home, pick up dinner and a cocktail. Did we mention he added extra parking too? 912 W. Jacobs A-MAZE-ing Transformation Fall isn’t complete without a trip to Jacob’s Corn Maze on M-72. The original farm has been in Mike Wittkopp’s family since 1892. His grandfather was the famous Jacob. In 2017, Mike retired from banking and was propositioned by Nate Crane, owner of Rare Bird and Brewpub with an idea; create a family outdoor experience, modeled after Uncle John’s Cider Mill north of Lansing. Mike was intrigued at this notion. “We are on the same page,” replied Mike. “It was very fortuitous,” laughs Nate. Preserve the original barn, while adding an event center, a brew tap bar, casual food and a seating pavilion. Zoned as agriculture they were deemed essential, so work never shut down. ‘Northern Hero’ focuses on highlighting inspiring groups, events, and individuals within our community. We seek to find people who give back to the community in selfless ways. Bay Life Magazine is a proud supporter of our military and is especially grateful for their service to the United States. In consideration of the sacrifices that active and veteran service members make to keep our country safe, we believe it’s necessary to feature the local services that support them. Among these outlets, many will assist veterans with finding medical treatment as needed, counsel, veteran-family assistance, or help transitioning out of active duty and into the workforce. For example, Reining Liberty Ranch offers veterans an outlet to enjoy a boarding stable and trail rides, a garden, and various amenities. In January of 2020, Northern Michigan welcomed the new Colonel Demas T. Craw Veterans Affairs Clinic in Traverse City. This exciting new edition limited the necessity for veterans to travel outside of our region for medical treatment.

The local Sons of American Legion chapter specializes in seemingly small tasks that often go a long way in the eyes of our veterans, said George Champlin, the President of the chapter. These tasks might include paying a utility bill, helping around the house, and raising money through their annual garage sale. George can often be found handing out flags at the annual Patriots Game at Thirlby Field or Veterans Cup at Centre Ice Arena. George said that his local chapter, and other local veteran initiatives, “will do anything to help our veterans.” Andrew Dzierwa was born and raised in Traverse City and is passionate about promoting the people and culture within his hometown. INGREDIENTS Fresh tuna - “bluefin, bigeye, ahi” Black sesame seeds Wakame “seaweed salad” Sriracha Mae ploy “sweet chili sauce” Pickled ginger Nori sheets - Seaweed paper Wasabi Paste Sushi Rice - “botan calrose” 4 T - Rice wine vinegar 4 T - Sugar Fried shrimp - freezer section of grocery store - prepare as stated

the shrimp on the rice. Some of the shrimp will stick out either side of the rice. Next, add wakame and sushi ginger top of the shrimp to add flavor to your roll. “Side note” - you can add cucumber, carrot threads, etc to the rolls if you wish. Build the flavor profile you desire most. Add sriracha as the sauce to your roll, just enough to flavor the shrimp.
INSTRUCTIONS
Now the roll - moisten your hands and gently lift the end of the roll with your thumbs and fold over the roll, as you create your roll, keep rubbing the roll with moist hands, sometimes you have to just rub copious amounts of water so that the roll does not crack. When you have your roll, place in the fridge and allow it to set. Usually takes about 5 minutes. These can be done ahead of time so that you can focus on the tuna.

Let sit in the pan for 20-30 seconds. There is enough heat in the pan to sear the one side of the seeded tuna. For the Plating As you can see I enjoy paint brushes and dramatic styling. and boating by day, grilling and campfires by night, nothing says “up North” in Michigan more. Guests at Lakemore Resort in Traverse City don’t have to leave the grounds to experience it all. Located on the west shore of Arbutus Lake in Traverse City, the 10-acre property was home to 15 small 1930s era cottages. Dean and Tricia Adams, of Bay Area Contracting, with partners Mitchell Blue and Connie Deneweth, wanted to keep the historic feel but wanted to update it so guests could stay year-round. Three houses that sleep 12 each have been completed with another four on the way, scheduled to be completed in about a year. Each house has a yard, three shared docks, and 850 feet of shared beach. Each house also has a spectacular view of the water, a 500-acre inland lake, about 20 minutes from downtown Traverse City. The goal is for the location to become a “campus” with amenities for weddings, large family reunions, and special events. Guests are able to rent houses all together or separately. There are options to block off part of a house so that only four people can stay, and it is priced accordingly. “We are from Traverse City and know what ‘true up North’ feels like,” says Mitchell. “We wanted to create that, plus add a unique updated rustic feel and look.”
All three houses sleep 12 each, and have spectacular water views.
Driving
up to Lakemore Resort, the first thing guests may notice is the spectacular view of the lake, since each house sits on a hill. At first glance, each house may look identical. Although there are many similarities there are subtle differences. Each house has its own color theme – brown, navy, and green are currently built; the teal, black, blue, and gray house are under construction. From the outside, the houses are white, but look closely, and each house has different color shutters, window trim, garage and front doors. Inside the differences are a bit more apparent. “Each house is mostly the same, except for the color,” Mitchell said. “Everything was very well thought out and we were very hands on throughout the entire building and decorating process.” Mitchell added that he has been on site working on this project with his partners for about 2 years. “We meet as a group at least once a week,” he said. Stepping into each house, guests can immediately see there is a theme of family and togetherness from the photos that hang in the entryway mudroom. The photos are of kids and adults enjoying all that summer has to offer – swimming, boating, water skiing, and the sun. Each house’s color theme can be seen in different ways. For example, once guests open the brown front door to the brown house, the color can be seen in items such as cabinets, frames and décor.

the laminated vinyl plank (with a cork underlay to minimize wear and tear) from the entryway and down the hall and it will take guests to the master bedroom with a king-sized bed and a three-quarters bathroom. Step out and go to the kitchen, and the color brown is again evident in the cabinets and the white and brown granite countertops. Amongst the stainless-steel appliances and white tile backsplash, are smatterings of brown in an area rug and in décor such as a vase. In the green house, there are smatterings of green; in the navy house, navy. Each kitchen has an island that doubles as a bar area, with bar stools on one end. There is also a gas stove, microwave, dishwasher, and a full refrigerator, with a separate full freezer in a different space. “We wanted more refrigerator space to accommodate large groups of people,” Mitchell said. Walk into the dining rooms and, again, guests get a sense family from the dining table for eight and the décor that says “gather around the table,” or “eat.” Step into the four seasons screened in porch from the dining room and experience the view of Arbutus Lake up close. A gas fireplace is available here so the room can feel cozy on those cooler summer or fall nights. A picnic style table is here for meals or family game nights, as well as porch style furniture for a peaceful getaway to read or relax. The windows can be closed to allow the room to be used in the winter. “We want guests to come here and relax and not have to worry,” Mitchell said. “We provide lots of board games, cards, toys for kids, as well as linens, bath and beach towels, dishes and other items.”

From
the kitchen, the living room can easily be seen because of its open concept floor plan. A LED lit and mist fireplace is the main focal point here, providing the ambiance of a gas fireplace without the heat. Brown furniture surrounds the room, tying in the color theme; in the green house, it’s some green furniture, and in the navy house, navy furniture. Upstairs is where most of the sleeping space is, and it has three bedrooms that have queen beds, plus two sleeping nooks with twin beds, perfect for kids. There are also two bathrooms, both of which have access to be shared with all rooms. The bed frames are built in and have lighting overhead, much like a hotel. Each house has a walk-out finished off lower level, complete with family room, wet bar, and another bedroom with a queen and a twin bed, as well as a full bathroom. A laundry room can also be found here, with a washer and dryer available for use. Walk to a beach locker room, which is off of the family room, and find beach towels for each guest, as well as a cooler and beach bags. Outside the doors of the beach locker room is where all of the outside summer fun starts. Walk out to the patio and the first thing guests may notice is the view of the lake. While taking in the view, guests can use the built-in grill, patio dining area, outdoor shower, gas fire pit for fuss-free evening campfires, and hot tub. The green and navy houses share a large hot tub, and the brown has its own. Each home is smart home wired so the owners have access to the decibel level of the house and patio. To be respectful of other guests, there is a no noise after 10 pm ordinance.

path that is original to the property that has been there for nearly 100 years takes guests down to the beach. While on the beach, simply relax in the sun, go for a swim, or rent a fishing boat or pontoon boat by the day or by the week. Necessary boating items such as life jackets and gas for the boat are included. If guests are not comfortable driving a boat, “captain services” are available. In the evening, take advantage of the community firepit, located next to the beach. For large events, the “grand lawn” is available, which has room for up to 130 people. Space for a DJ and catering can be offered as well. Lakemore Resort is also available in the fall and winter so guests can enjoy being close to many fun activities including wineries, hiking, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, and snow tubing. “We wanted a way to show people Traverse City, but in a unique old-fashioned way,” Mitchell said. “There’s everything you need, all in one spot.”
