heers to you and the year 2022! Tom and I are excited to have earned the bragging rights to boast that BayLife has been around for 10 years. We launched our first issue in January 2012, when everyday life was still in a recession. Tom and I were still pretty new in town, moving here in 2010 from Washington D.C. (Tom is an East Lansing native.) People thought we were crazy, founding a company relying on c Studios aphi togr Pho rne Windbo selling advertising alone, in uncertain economic times. Who would have thought 9 years later we would endure a worldwide pandemic and global shutdown? We feel so blessed that over the years BayLife has been embraced by our community to represent the heart of Traverse City.
As I look back at that first issue, the welcome page featured our daughter Teaghan and I. She was a tiny 3-year-old, wearing a nautical little dress and a pink bow in her hair. The perfect baby teeth smile. (Years before she would have to endure 2-year braces that just came off, thank you Dr. Scott Schulz). In that old photo I have a lot less wrinkles. Although I do recall asking photographer Mike Windborne to Photoshop them out. He said he left some in, so I wasn’t unrecognizable. Funny huh? If you have been reading our magazine through the years you have seen Teaghan grow. She has only ever known parents that publish a magazine, calling our family “Magazine People.” It’s the one thing I absolutely love about what we do for a living. She doesn’t realize that it’s normal to her, that she knows most chefs at the restaurants new and old, the owners of most stores and has the inside scoop on most of goings on in Traverse City. It’s the best part of being “Magazine People.” We get to introduce you first to the faces and stories of soon-to-be new neighbors and old friends that have returned home. In the last 10 years our vibrant pages have featured so many fresh-faced, hopeful entrepreneurs taking the leap to make their dreams a reality. New restaurants like PepeNero, The Good Bowl, Brew, 7 Monks Taproom, Sparks BBQ, The Little Fleet, Bonobo Winery, Hop Lot Brewing Company, and Mama Lu’s, to name a few. They were all just starting their journey and now they have shaped the town. We have brought you stories on expansions, second locations, new bank acquisitions and always tell the story of one door closing but another opening. That is what community is all about. As our town has grown and evolved, so have we.

As much as our town grows so rapidly the one thing that always connects and grounds us all, is our community’s charitable and giving spirit. We are a big small town. We are so very proud to have featured hundreds of local faces representing so many worthy non-profits in the pages of BayLife, giving back to our community. Raising millions of dollars to make our home a better place to live for everyone. A special thank you to my non-stop working husband Tom, for attending each event with me. He captures all of those endless “On the Town” photos. He spends hours editing and downloading, and then naming everyone. But it’s what makes our magazine so unique, special, relevant, community driven and loved. After a crazy year and a half of uncertainty we are ready for the next 10 years. Bring it on. We got this.

You are two years on the job and are receiving great reviews on your leadership. What are you most proud of so far? That’s easy. Every day I wake up inspired by the mission of NMC: We deliver lifelong learning opportunities to transform lives and enrich our communities. I am proud of the employees and community members who help breathe life into that mission, day in and day out. I am most proud of our students who’ve bravely committed to learning something new. Their grit and resilience, overcoming challenges to better their lives and their loved ones’ lives makes me proud. Best of all, these students live, work, and prosper in our community – they in turn give back to our community. Their personal transformation leads to community transformation. Where are you from originally and what has been your journey to Traverse City? I think of Hershey, Pennsylvania as home, having had the life-saving opportunity to attend and graduate from the Milton Hershey School. Given a “messy” childhood which included homelessness and food insecurity, the Milton Hershey School afforded me safety and hope. Experiencing Mr. and Mrs. Hershey’s generosity and servant leadership has also grown in me an “attitude of gratitude.” I am deeply grateful for the opportunity I was given, and feel I have a responsibility to pay it forward. I believe there’s no better way to share my strengths then to be leading a community college, impacting students’ lives and bettering our community.

Who are your mentors or heros in life, and what have you learned from them? Oh, there’s so many. But one who I often hear his words in my ear, is a former boss and mentor, Johnny O’Brien, who was president of the Milton Hershey School (and a fellow alumnus). While I never heard him speak the oft-quoted Teddy Roosevelt words, “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care,” I observed Johnny role model those words, and in all his interactions. What is one thing that would surprise us to know about you? For more than 20 years, I have found great joy acting in performances on stages throughout the US and Canada, as well as England, Poland, and Slovenia. While living in Cincinnati, before moving to Traverse City, I played a role with Cincinnati’s True Theatre, where I coached storytellers/performers and helped curate stories for this theater of personal storytelling. Do you have any words of wisdom you live by? I have been moved by the words of NMC alumna and the outstanding Traverse City citizen, Peg Jonkhoff, who shared with me, “If you wish to live in a better place, then better the place in which you live.” Tell us three words that best describe you? Lifelong Learner; Possibilitarian; and Servant Leader

BEET TACOS Beet Tacos
4 grilled corn tortillas 1 medium beet 1/4 cup minced onion Shredded lettuce Baja sauce Carrot hot sauce Served with lime wedge
Instructions
Medium chop your beets and boil for about 20 minutes or until fork tender. Chop onions and lettuce for toppings. Once beets are finished, drain and cook on skillet with a slab of vegan butter for a minute or so. Pan sear your tortillas and assemble adding salt and crack pepper to taste. Top with sauces and ENJOY!

2 carrots 1 tsp. vegan chicken base 1/4 cup chopped onions 1/2 small habanero
Instructions
Chop your peeled carrots, onion and minced habanero. Place in pot and add enough water to cover your veg. Once boiling add your Vegan chicken base and stir. Boil until carrots are fork tender. Add salt to taste then add to a high-speed blender until silky smooth.

Instructions
Boil water and add your morita chili. Cover and let steam. Once soft and cooled take out seeds, stem and skin the rough chop. In a blender add all ingredients above until smooth. Add salt to taste.

“It’s the result of a laundry error, which produced a carnage of my favorite sweaters due to Kevin’s good intentions of helping with the task. The sweaters became quite small and misshapen. I blended my sewing and design skills to repurpose the sweaters into wearables for our then young daughters. The designs were quickly coveted by many and baabaazuzu was born.”

“I’m the “Zuzu” of baabaazuzu, it’s my nickname for Sue and the baabaa is a nod to the wool fabric used in our designs.”

“We sell to over 500 retailers across the US, Canada and Japan. We exhibit at remote events, have a brick-and-mortar store in Lake Leelanau and a lively website. Baabaazuzu can also be found on Amazon Handmade and Etsy.”
With baabaazuzu, what are you most proud of?
“Our ability to adapt and persevere. When you span three decades, you encounter challenges, change and hurdles, along with your successes. We have just never let anything get in the way of baabaazuzu.”

“We’re opening a restaurant in Lake Leelanau. Bringing Coney Island hot dogs and ice cream to the county in a super cool space across from Boathouse Vineyards.”

I
t is said that life is an open book full of blank pages and you write the stories as you go. This rings true with local photojournalist John Russell. He has shared half a century’s worth of news stories he reported on to create his newly published book, “My Office Today: 50 Years of Northern Michigan Images.”
It’s a history book, containing a myriad of memories of the past, that tell the news of the day, forever frozen in time with pictures and captions. This “labor of love,” as John refers to it, has been three years in the making. He tirelessly sifted through over 84,000 frames choosing two strict criteria to narrow down the coveted winning photos that shape the book. “Impact and story. They had to bring a smile or have a wow factor. We had to include humor too,” says John. Some of the funny photos he had a hand in directing. “There are two answers to any question, yes and no, when you ask someone to do something silly,” he laughs. “We need more humor in this world.”

hrough the lens of his Nikon camera, he seized moments of the unexpected. Page by page, the astounding fact to remember is John was actually on-scene – boots on the ground and camera in hand, capturing in a single frame the snapshots of life. From Mother Nature, all-powerful in glory or wrath, to human emotions of man-made drama. To one time only, never to happen again events, John was in the right place at the right time. As we lingered through the book together his memory of each adventure is remarkable. “It’s easy the pictures meant a lot to me,” he says.

ohn, a Traverse City native, received his first paying gigs while attending Michigan State University. There, he started shooting photos for the student paper. “I carried my camera everywhere; my goal was to have a cover shot every day! I got paid $3 a picture,” he laughs. “I wasn’t officially on the staff because I wasn’t a journalism student. But I prevailed.” As he progressed into real world newspapers his stories of lessons learned are many. “One time I was challenged, I’ve only got these limited lenses. ‘Get closer’ came words of wisdom from Tony Spina, the chief photographer of the Detroit Free Press. I’m quite sure I was a pain in the butt, I was always asking questions.”

SPARK SHOW 2018 - Buckley Old Engine Show. I had set up my camera and tripod not knowing what to expect. Sparks filled the sky with sparkling ash, a beautiful sight.
HELICOPTER MOON A Hunter’s Moon shone as the U.S. Coast Guard was doing circles awaiting a flight over Thirlby Field for the Trojans - Titans football game at the end of the national anthem for a fly over. I willed this shot - third time was the charm for a once in a lifetime shot. It ran in the Associated Press wire. The Coast Guard were over the moon with the publicity!
MANISTEE LIGHT To lessen the pain of my father’s recent passing after closing out his apartment, I soaked in the shoreline beauty. I captured this shot that I offered to the Associated Press, which sent it to newspapers all across the United States.

ameras in tow, chasing a story down has become his life legacy. His long list of accolades boast prize-winning photographs, and powerhouse affiliations including Newsweek, TIME, The New York Times and The Times, a London-based newspaper, to name a few. Publications closer to home include The Detroit Free Press and the Traverse City Record Eagle. Along the way he credits many mentors that have shaped his life, inspiring him greatly. “I wanted to be the kind of person that people want to say hi to.” John’s zest for life and adventure is palpable. “My mom was a painter, she gave me the gift to be able to see things, she would say “you have the vision, develop it.” I’m always looking. I leave early in the morning for my road trips of discovery. I call them my drive-by (photography) shootings.” After lively conversations with John, you can vividly imagine him in the car, camera at the ready on the hunt. For enduring that lifestyle alongside him, he dedicates the book to his wife Meg, of 30 years. “She’s amazing,” he says. She aided and abetted him on many a chase. And finally, to the question posed, what is your best photograph? John answers “I hope I haven’t shot it yet. This shot has been in my mind for a long time now. Towards the end of this fall, my buddy and I had the chance to drop our skis in the lake and buzz around the Mighty Mac. It was the coolest thing, it was so clear at ground level, but a few hundred feet up was fog. Of course I had to do the one thing I hate doing, which is launching and landing my drone from the Jet Ski. The sun was rising, there was hardly any traffic, and it was a day I’ll never forget.

TO SAY THAT STEVE AND LORY CASSENS HOME located on Old Mission Peninsula, is inspired by the legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, is a huge understatement. Their impeccable Prairie-style home pays homage to the groundbreaking era of modern America with every meticulous detail. Wright’s 1901 design was inspired by the broad flat land of America’s Midwest, “living in harmony with nature” as Wright described it. He believed a structure should reflect the surrounding environment, with an emphasis on horizontal rather than vertical, earth tones, and a continuous blending of interiors with exteriors.
“We took a flat roof home built in 1965, and took it back in time to 1910,” laughs Steve.
YEARNING FOR SIMPLICITY LED BY WRIGHT, bold American
architects claimed their independence, reshaping the landscape one home at a time. It was a time to be freed from the shackles of the Victorian lavish era and the countries and customs of old Europe. “I’ve always had an interest in architecture,” says Steve. “I had a drafting table at age 10, with protractors at the ready.” It’s also not the first time the couple took on a specific project house. “We built a Maple Island log home before they came to Traverse City. It’s very interesting to us.” The fun fact is this house began as a hobby. “We own about 50 Frank Lloyd Wright books and love the era in furniture, lighting and woodwork.” That was the catalyst to finally evolve into a full-blown home renovation. “We took a flat roof home built in 1965, and took it back in time to 1910,” laughs Steve. They didn’t do it alone. To create the ultimate transformation they needed professional help! “Architect (Frederick Ball) works out of Harbor Springs, he was very gracious to work with us, right down to the five-foot overhangs.” The polished final showcase you see in the photographs has been 20 years in the making. “Our next door neighbor Terry Farrugia owns West Lake Construction. He helped with the super structure and over the years we have made modifications.”
INSIDE THE HOME ITS WARMTH AND STRENGTH SHINES THROUGH THE NATURAL ORGANIC ELEMENTS. It exactly replicates Wrights concept of custom quarter sawn red oak, traditionally cherry stained. “In the kitchen, Frank Lloyd Wright always used white oak, so everything is custom built.” It’s also a chef’s kitchen complete with all the bells and whistles — high end appliances, like Wolf and a Sub-Zero. Their commitment to stay true to the iconic design is mind-blowing. “We have a number of items that are actually licensed through the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.”
THE PLANTERS THAT WELCOME YOU gracing the
entrance are the duplicates of the Allen House, located in Wichita, KS. Commissioned in 1916 and finished in 1918, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Allen House is named after its first owners, newspaper publisher Henry Allen and his wife, Elsie. The lights are duplicates of the Frederick C. Robie House, in Chicago, IL. Built for Frederick C. Robie who was the owner of bicycle and automobile companies, he commissioned a three-car garage, which was exceedingly rare in 1910. The stained-glass ceiling lights are duplicates of the Meyer May House in Grand Rapids, MI. Designed in 1908 for a prominent Grand Rapids clothier, these were painstakingly designed from scratch. The weight of actual stained glass would be too much. So, they were recreated in mylar pieces on a slate of tempered glass. They are backlit with LED so there are no hotspots on the glass. It creates a beautiful warm honey glow. Wright’s inside living style was very modern in thinking. Gone were the small chopped up Victorian rooms, instead favoring light airy open plans that flowed out from the kitchen and the living room. You will also see a practical Prairie-style calling card, built in bookcases and this house has a plethora.
As you venture from room to room it’s apparent how Steve and Lory’s house has completely evolved over the years. Accruing accent pieces from treasure hunts and perfecting the fundamentals that highlight its uniqueness. Their home is pure perfection, it’s flourishing and blooming, shining bright to attract a new family to love it. For Lory and Steve, it’s time for a new chapter. They have listed their home for sale with Ted Schweitzer. They are blessed with two grandchildren, ages six and three. “We winter in Florida and love spending time with them. I’ve got a lot of knowledge of what to do and what not to do that I have to share. I want them to grow up and be good citizens and contribute.” Back in Traverse City their new chapter involves a motor home, “My folks did it and they loved it,” laughs Steve. Along with lots of golf and social time with friends at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa. It was a tradition for all of Frank Lloyd Wright homes commissioned to be named after the owner. The Cassens House is well deserving of such a title. Plus, they have public figure community ties too. As you linger a little longer at the photos does the style start to look slightly familiar?

you may start to see a resemblance. Steve spent 32 years in management at the Cherry Capital Airport. When it was time to plan the south side new terminal, many designs were on the table. Eventually airport management along with the Northwestern Regional Airport Commission landed on a Frank Lloyd Wright Prairie design. They felt like it reflected the personality and lifestyle of Up North with the aesthetics and atmosphere. “From the concept to concrete it took about eight years. It opened in 2004. We really wanted to make it be an asset to our community, we have Munson Medical Center, Northwestern Michigan College and Interlochen Center of the Arts. We knew we needed a vibrant airport because it connects us to the world.”
