How aesthetic treatments improve your quality of life We serve an amazing community of people. What they all want is to feel good regardless of age, sex, skin type, or body shape. When you look better, you feel better, and there’s scientific research to back that up. Courtney Lo,

Founder of Cosmetic Skin & Laser Center

Self-esteem boost Confidence – that’s the one word we consistently hear as the biggest benefit of aesthetic treatments – a feeling of confidence. “Getting aesthetic treatments doesn’t mean you hate what you see in the mirror,” says CSLC Clinical Director Courtney Lo. “You may be totally comfortable in your own body, but enhancing or simply maintaining your unique features – it’s always a boost!” “We have long known the physically enhancing benefits of Botox treatments, but to now have data that indicates Botox also improves one’s psyche, self-esteem, and quality of life is very significant,” says Steven H. Dayan, MD, FACS at the Chicago Center for Facial Plastic Surgery and lead investigator in a study about the effects of Botox injections on quality of life and self-esteem.

It’s not just Botox that brings value to people’s lives. “These little annoyances are often felt in the background of our lives,” Lo says, “and patients are surprised to learn that they can easily eliminate them.” Whether it’s excessive sweating in the summer that stains white t-shirts, or having to remember panty liners for bladder control, these daily downers weigh on us. “But if you can eliminate a couple at a time, life gets better!” Lo adds.

Feeling better

Lisa S. was bothered the spider veins that appeared in her 20s. “They’re partly genetic, and partly due to being a flight attendant,” she told us. Sclerotherapy reduced her veins in just 3 treatments. The result for Lisa? “Now when I shave, I like looking at my legs again and I enjoy wearing skirts.” Sally S. was bothered by seeing her double chin on video conferences. “I’ve known about it for a while,” she told us, “but seeing it all the time on screen – it’s like I suddenly turned into my mom!” After FaceTite, “It’s so much better! No more turtlenecks.” After giving birth, women are overwhelmed by the changes in their body shape and function. “I lost the weight, but my shape had changed and Coolsculpting helped me get it back,” states Elizabeth B, a CSLC patient. “It actually made me a happier mom and partner!”

Worry-free

All the the things on your skin or body that bother you add up, and aesthetic treatments help reduce all the overload and ongoing maintenance of your life. You maintain and update your home – don’t you deserve that level of selfcare, too? So many of our services simply help deliver a worry-free life.

Whether you’re in your 30s and gloss your lips with Restylane Kysse injections, or in your 80s and spoil yourself with a medical grade facial, or filler in your downturned mouth for a little boost, aesthetic treatments bring empowerment and confidence to your life on a daily basis. Like the spring in your step you feel after you leave the salon, maintaining your treatments each quarter creates a self-care ritual all year long. As Courtney Lo says, “It’s just like touching up my roots or getting a massage – ongoing aesthetic treatments are a tangible way you tell yourself: ‘I matter. I care about me.’”

Getting started

The advantage of Cosmetic Skin & Laser Center over most practices is that we offer complimentary aesthetic consultations with every visit. People are overwhelmed by the beauty industry. “They want to know they’re choosing the right treatments and making good self-care investments,” says Lo. “We care about patient satisfaction and your results just as much as you do,” she adds. Want to get started? Give us a call or text us at 231.347.7395 for your complimentary consultation.

“To optimize my health and wellness, I rely on a regimen of yoga, exercise, diet, skin rejuvenation, and sex life with my husband. I sit down with my provider to make a plan every year – Morpheus, Hydrafacial, PRF, etc. It makes a big difference in how I feel!” – Peggy Martin, CSLC Patient

“If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” -Maya Angelou

’ll be honest, I wish our small town was not going through this rapid explosion in growth right now. I miss zipping across from the west side to the east side in ten minutes when I am running late (which I admit is all the time) But hey, the upside is I always have a good excuse now. Traffic is horrible all the time. It didn’t end when summer did. The stark reality is that Traverse City is no longer a small town. Everyone wants to bloody live here. So, we must share, be patient, and if you are like me change to an “attitude of gratitude” while thanking the Lord you bought your home when you did. You probably couldn’t afford it today.

With the changing landscape, we thought it would be cool to expand upon our Now and Then department. If you recall, we highlight an old downtown photo and capture today’s version. Tom was in historical heaven searching far and wide for vintage postcard pictures on eBay. It was an eye-opening project, and we created a full-blown feature to celebrate our town’s past and present. Speaking of which, we have also been working hard on an updated third printing of the history book, Perry Hannah’s Gifts. It will include new additions that co-author Peg Jonkhoff is excited for. Peg told us the very last book available was recently sold at Horizon Books, so we had to get down to business. Past and present also play a recurring theme in the pages ahead. We are thrilled to have Ty Schmidt as our Mover & Shaker. Most locals are familiar with Ty’s face as the founder of Norte. Jumping on a bike and getting outside was just a steppingstone. His new quest is to fight the war against mental illness in kids and teens, founding Good Works Lab and summoning the best local professionals to act as his army. It was fun getting to know him—his passion is truly contagious. We also step inside Lori Grossnickle’s spectacular home and tell the story of how she built it (with a lot of help from Roger Widing of Widing Custom Homes) after her original log home burnt down. Her journey from beginning to end is full of stories, as she sought to design the home with unique elements that make her happy. In an up-north world of nautical waterfront cottages, contemporary chic, and modern farmhouse, this is a rare glimpse into true Western style. With the popular cowboy shows Yellowstone and 1883 trending right now, we channeled that inspiration for our Style in the City.

Photo shoot Then + Now Park Place 9th floor balcony.

If you are an avid fan of Yellowstone, you’ve watched the clash of urban growth changing the landscape, just like here at home. It’s a pickle for sure. Let’s see the glass half full: we already knew the secret and were early adapters, carving out amazing lives with our families and friends. Hopefully this big boom will allow us all to prosper beyond our dreams. How lucky are we?

Yoga Crew - Kay, Hilary, daughter Juniper and Cathy of Dharamsala TC

A huge congratulations goes to NMC’s Great Lakes Culinary Institute Director Chef Les Eckert. She has been honored with the Joseph Amendola award from the American Academy of Chefs. She has devoted her career to her profession and to the mentoring of young individuals who will be future pastry chefs. You can sample their delicious treats by reserving a coveted lunch table at Lobdell’s, the teaching restaurant on campus now open for Spring semester, or with NMC’s “A Taste of Success.”

Serenity Found

This beloved event is sadly not back in person, but consider taking part by purchasing the $250 To-Go package. All proceeds help support scholarships, making culinary education possible for students. Food pickup at NMC’s Great Lakes Campus from 4 p.m.-6 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2022. Visit nmc.edu for reservations and more information.

Yoga is officially back on Front St. with a second studio location for Dharamsala TC. Last year the small, women owned and operated yoga studio launched their first oasis from today’s busy, hectic world at 1869 Robinwood Ct, just off Barlow. Owners Kay Epple and Hilary Lee are excited to have opened the doors on Front St. With a beautiful setting overlooking the Boardman and West Bay, they believe in peace, connection, and community. Dharamsala TC offers a variety of yoga classes for every age group. The studio gets its name from the word Dharamsala, which literally means “a spiritual dwelling” and in loose translation as a shelter or rest house for pilgrims and travelers. With 12 different types of yoga classes, there is something here for all ages, skills, and backgrounds, even little kiddos! 317B & 319 East Front St. dharamsalatc.com

Lisa Dykema is breezing onto Front St. with an air of California cool. To be exact it’s l.a.cool, her high end, soon-to-be-opening boutique. l.a.cool is also a play on her initials and maiden name. Originally from Wisconsin, Lisa owns a cottage on Torch Lake. After raising four boys and working alongside her husband at the family business, she retired. “I started to get restless. I played a lot of tennis and then shattered my elbow. I thought, what now?” The recent growth and demographics lead Lisa to believe the timing is right. “I was very specific: I wanted to be on Front St., I wanted brick walls and high ceilings.” As luck would have it, Green Island was closing. “The style is very L.A., very Californian, with whites and creams. I’m going to have a couch and a big screen tv. Even the lighting fixtures are spectacular,” she gushes. Lisa has procured many exclusive brands for a luxury shopping experience. “I want it to be a destination.” Inside you’ll find celebrity favorites, stunning shoes, dazzling dresses, amazing accessories, and European brands with pops of color. As Lisa proudly shows us her custom hangers she relays, “This has been so much fun.” What girl doesn’t love to shop? l.a.cool, 120 E. BOHO ON FRONT

Meanwhile, across from Little Fleet, Faith VanRyswyk has completely transformed the former Sweet Tartelette into the Olive Branch Boutique, an artsy, boho lover’s wanderlust. “It’s an earthy vibe,” says Faith. The inspiration for a boutique comes from her mom Joy, who owns Magnolia Boutiques in Cadillac and Rockford. With her savvy buying power they launched in a small space at the back (behind Peace Love & Little Donuts) last October. After Sara Steele announced she was closing, Faith jumped at the opportunity for a coveted storefront presence and more space. After years of being a bakery, the colossal reveal is a beautiful metamorphose with calming neutral colors and layers of casual chic musthaves. Walls are lined with hip jewelry, girly gifts, sassy bags, and of course boho wide-brimmed hats to top it all off. As if it couldn’t be any cuter, Olive the Australian Doodle puppy will greet you.

Life is sweet

All Is GOOD Eighth St. near Garfield Ave is becoming a foodie haven. First, their world was rocked with Oakwood Proper Burgers, and now, coming soon, a second Common Good Bakery location. “We have outgrown our space at 14th street,” says owner Jason Gollan. So after totally tantalizing tastebuds on the West side since opening in 2017, they are advancing east. With nearly 3,200 square feet, it’s a good move to develop their heavenly goodness. “We’re planning on putting in a bakery and kitchen and expanding what we do in terms of food,” says Jason. The name may be Common Good, but there is nothing common about the deliciousness they serve up—breakfast sandwiches to jump start your day, fresh French peasant bread paninis to die for, soups and salads for the carb conscious, and indulgently sweet goodies too. Here’s the scoop—homemade ice cream is coming to the west side (formerly Wares Bros) with Buchan’s West Bay. The handcrafted ice cream from Blueberry Hill on Old Mission Peninsula has been a favorite for years. Owners Ben and Lori Buchan are fifth generation farmers, but as Lori explains, “Farming is really hard work, which doesn’t bother me, but there are so many things you can’t control like the weather, so my plan B was ice cream. I didn’t plan on opening ice cream shops; my son thinks they’re a good idea.” A few years ago, she opened Scoops 22 in Suttons Bay. “It was familiar to me; I grew up there. The store used to be my uncle’s. This building is familiar too—after sixth grade we moved to Traverse City and we lived right behind here.” Her first task is new equipment, fresh paint, and a little sweat equity. Lori also makes the point she’s not competing with Moomers. “They are dairy farmers, and we are fruit farmers. Most of the fruit in our ice cream comes right from our farm. It’s Buchan good!” Buchan’s West Bay, 13000 S W Bayshore Dr., Traverse City

CHEERS with Darric from Folgarelli’s

Spring Fling Spring is in the air and with it we look to the freshness of what warmer weather brings. I love the smells of Mother Nature letting our Northern Michigan area come alive. One of my favorite wines from the North, year after year, is Verterra’s Pinot Blanc.

If you are looking for a refreshing and lively wine, this is it. With bright floral notes on the nose, this wine has great flavors of ripe peach and a hint of lemon. The finish is dry with a mineral crispness.

If you’re looking for a fantastic appetizer pairing, give fresh blanched asparagus wrapped with lightly grilled Prosciutto di Parma a try. Either way, I’m sure you will love this wine with some tasty food or on its own. Happy sipping!

with Grand Traverse Distillery The Distillery 781 Industrial Circle Ste. 5 grandtraversedistillery.com

OUR STORY (On the back of the bottle) “I grew up on a family farm in Michigan. One day, in the hayloft, I discovered three well-used whiskey jugs. Grandpa George, a Polish immigrant, was putting grain to good use. Fast forward to 2005. We opened Grand Traverse Distillery, Northern Michigan’s first craft distillery. We use only local grains. We distill and bottle every spirit we sell. No shortcuts. Grandpa George would be proud.” – Kent Rabish KENT’S SON, LANDIS, MASTER DISTILLER continues… “My dad went to school in Marquette and studied Biology and Chemistry. He had a long career selling pharmaceuticals and his chemistry background brought him back here. Back in the day when you ran a farm you also made booze. On my great uncle Phil’s farm, they were also making true north rye vodka. Vodka is a quicker turnaround that you can build a company on. So that’s what dad started with. Our growth in craft whiskey has blown up in the last 2 years.” FUN FACTS FROM LANDIS AND MIKE  We are a true grain to bottle distillery; we get all our grain’s wheat, rye, corn and barley, from Send Brothers Farm in Williamsburg.  Starting out grain distilleries weren’t allowed to have tasting rooms.  Whiskey starts out clear, and the charring of the barrel over time is what causes sweetness and color.

“We are the oldest craft distillery in the state of Michigan” Master Distiller Landis Rabish with Sales Director Mike Brunner

 Our barrels are American white oak, heavily charred. They are based on a 1-5 system, 5 being the darkest. Our barrels are a 4.  Our Chipotle Vodka is amazing for Bloody Mary’s.  We are family owned, my brother, Steve runs the warehouse and logistics.  Our True North Rye Vodka was selected one of the top 4 vodkas in the world.  Ole George 100% Straight Rye Whiskey was picked the best of category for rye whiskey 3 of the past 4 years at the American Distillers Association.  If it doesn’t say ‘distilled’ by – they didn’t make it.

The Home Expo

The Home Expo The pandemic shutdown forced every family to rethink their home space. Crammed together in our home sweet homes, we had to carve out inventive areas for work, study, play, exercise, and serenity. Along with it, our floors took a beating, bathrooms were judged, and kitchens were put to the ultimate test. Also exposed were weaknesses and strengths in our utilities’ efficiency. Inside and out, top to bottom, and side to side, families realized what worked and what didn’t. What did you discover for your family’s evolving needs? A bigger kitchen? A new furnace? New flooring? They do say timing is everything, so the Home Builders Association’s Home Expo is coming to your rescue. The Home Expo is one of the largest building industry events in Northern Michigan, drawing residential construction industry professionals to showcase their products and services in just one weekend! It comes to life with over 120 vendors on April 23-24 at the Grand Traverse Resort Conference Center. Whether its remodeling, redecorating, replacing, or rebuilding altogether, all of your inspirations and aspirations can be fulfilled by perusing the booths and consulting with local expert craftsmen. They can even connect you with friendly local lenders to find the funds to make it happen! For tickets and more details, visit hbagta.com. 28

PROJECT

HOME With Angela Goodall

PHOTOS BY JASON HULET HULET REAL ESTATE PHOTOGRAPHY

THEN & NOW: Updating Design “Rules” Freedom to play is the new design theory. So many hard fast “rules” of old are no longer relevant when designing your spaces. Not that “anything goes,” there are still some tried and true aspects of design that should be followed, but stretching your creativity and feeling emboldened to mix it up a bit are all fair game.

Rule #1 - You cannot mix white with cream…. well, yes you can! Just be cautious that there is clearly a common undertone. Bright white w/ shades of gray or blue white work well together. Soft white with shades of cream and yellow based whites also flow well. The rule of thumb is to make sure there is enough contrast so one does not make the other look dirty or just a little off. Using different sheens between the shades also contributes to the idea that they are intentionally different.

Rule #2 - Don’t use dark colors on low ceilings. Well, if we want the room to feel cozy, that is just what we should do. Paint a low ceiling in the powder bath black. What a statement! Also, playing with the walls in a small space with darker colors and/or large patterns in wall paper or faux finishes. Be brave in a small space. It just may give you the wow factor on a small scale that you are looking for. Rule #3 - Yes, use wallpaper! The updated colors and patterns are spectacular! If installed correctly by a professional, it will also be easy to strip in the future when you want to update a space. Don’t even get me started with the “kitchen triangle.” That is a whole other article. But consult a professional when designing a new space. Be brave, don’t box yourself in and it can be an amazing transformation and update to your home that you have been wanting and needing.

Angela Goodall is the lead designer and co-owner of Kitchen Choreography with her husband Mike.

Imagine if you can:

your beautiful retirement home in northern Michigan just burnt down to the ground. That alone would be completely devastating. But at the same time you also must face the stark realization that your long-time spouse, best friend, and soulmate is no longer well enough to live and share every day with you going forward. That’s what happened to Lori Grossnickle. Lori’s main loves are family and horses (with a plethora of other furry things too). It’s no surprise that her sprawling Leelanau County property is an epic equestrian utopia complete with horses, stalls, a pole barn, and acres of fenced pastures. At the time of the fire the power at her log home had been outed by a big storm. They were temporarily running power on a generator. While Lori was outside watering plants, Chelsea, her horse farm manager, noticed that the lights in the house were flickering and yelled, “Something’s burning.” Lori’s husband Steve was inside and oblivious to the danger. They got him to safety, and Lori’s three grown children rushed over. Firefighters came from Cedar, Leelanau, and Sutton’s Bay to douse the flames. Lori even ran back in the burning home to retrieve her little Corgi puppy, Darla, who was locked in the bedroom. “It was a nightmare,” recalls Lori. “Of course, I ran in for the puppy, but not my purse.” Lori’s beloved husband Steve, a retired ophthalmologist, had been slowly suffering from FTD, frontotemporal disorders, a form of dementia. It was now painfully obvious she couldn’t take care of him anymore and decided to get him care, as he was no longer able to be by her side to make huge decisions. Lori felt at a total loss but then realized she had to move forward.

“This is not defining me.

I will rebuild,” she declared. “It was a rude wake-up call as I called countless builders. Everyone wanted me to already have a plan in place. I tried to clearly tell them, ‘My house just burnt down!’ I called Roger (Roger Widing at Widing Custom Homes). He was the only one who showed up, and with an architect in tow.” As Lori sat with her new dream team, they created plans together. They made the process simple by asking her likes and dislikes of her previous homes. Finally, she made a wish list with inspiration from Google and Pinterest. “I needed to see something positive in my life,” says Lori. “I told them, ‘You helped a damsel in distress,’” she laughs. When custom building a house from scratch, the options are mind-boggling. “Every time I felt overwhelmed, I called Joni, Roger’s office manager. She was my go-to-gal. She helped me pick out so many things, even the granite.” Lori also had a long list of ideas that she wanted to incorporate into her new home. This was where hiring a master custom builder paid off. “Roger never said no. He always made things work.” You’ll notice this before you even step inside. You are mesmerized by the ornate front door, a towering veil of a magnificent tree adorned with bold, animated branches like the tree of life, ready to welcome every guest. It is a stunning piece of art that is truly breathtaking. Lori had seen an example of the same kind of door in a national magazine and called the builder of the home. “The lady was pretty snotty and asked if I was a customer. I wasn’t. She was telling me they only make them for clients whose homes they have built.” Roger to the rescue! “Good old Roger, the problem solver,” laughs Lori.

“I had some definite ideas, there isn’t a part of this house that I didn’t have my hand in.”

Once inside Lori’s home,

the airy open staircase reveals the second floor. “Ace Welding made the metal railings and I just love the metal buckles that pull together the oak,” Lori explains. Looking up, rich wood covers the cathedral ceilings, giving an elegant yet casual vibe, creating warmth. The colossal, recycled exposed beams show strength and add character. To the right leads guests into the heart of the home: the kitchen. “This house was built around this kitchen,” says Lori. The massive island is well equipped with comfy leather bar stools. “We gather in this kitchen. Brian, Alanna, and Katie [her son, daughter-in-law, and daughter] all love to cook. It’s a happy kitchen. Complete with a stocked wine cooler so there is never a shortage of happy hours.’” Many custom kitchens still look “cookie cutter.” No such thing here! Lori was specific with the cabinet finish and color scheme. Each was meticulously hand-painted and finished twice—she didn’t like the first color. “It was ultra-modern, and we weren’t seeing eye to eye,” she explains. The tone almost mirrors a patina that naturally happens over time on brass: a soft green with hints of copper. Lori even has hand-painted outlet covers and light switches, camouflaged to perfection. “The Gallery in Cedar did those for me.” The soft shades are continued with the hexagonal backsplash tile. “I couldn’t find any tile I liked. I finally found this in New Mexico. Each one is hand painted.” Even the cabinet handles are hard to find. Lori found Ukrainian artist Alexi on Etsy, who handmade and shipped them. Every unique element in Lori’s home comes with its own story to tell. Many include her long and lingering searches on Etsy, the worldwide marketplace for ultracrafty entrepreneurs to hock their wares. Some things found in Lori’s house are amazing uses of unusual items, like chandeliers made from chicken feeders used in Poland. Yes, really! “I wanted light as much as we could. My last two homes were log homes and they were so dark,” says Lori. With the light and wide-open views in mind, Lori added lots of small deck spaces that flow from some of her favorite rooms so guests can easily enjoy the outside space from just about anywhere in the house.

When asked about the design

of her house, Lori likes to call it Western. It makes sense: her passion and love of horses is evident in her décor. Breathtaking works of art featuring thoroughbreds adorn the walls on all three levels. Worn leather and cowhide furniture are carefully placed throughout. Her home combines the feelings of a ranch in Montana and a luxury cabin in Aspen. The sweeping outdoor views span acres and overlook Sugar Loaf.

“The full barn doors were too dark. I bought these old garden gates from a junk shop and asked if Roger could do something with it.”

It would easily house

the Dutton family of the popular television show Yellowstone. You recognize this instantly if you are a fan of the show—Lori is, so it’s a compliment when we mention it. Lori’s warm and whimsical home is full of discoveries and exudes texture and color. The ambiance is that of an affluent western market gallery, walls draped with striking one-of-akind pieces and furniture handmade by talented artisans. It is filled with her favorite things that bring her joy, including her wonderful kids and grandkids. The Grossnickle family is now able to cherish old memories while creating new ones for generations to come. With one visit you can see and feel that the home has been an adventure in Lori’s journey toward healing. “This house was like my therapy. I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Poppy, Lori’s rescued cat chilling on the stairs. “She’s the tiger,” laughs Lori.

NORTHERN ENCOUNTERS

TODD AND BRAD REED PHOTOGRAPHY

Day 80 of 366 by Brad Reed I have only ever witnessed one better particle ray in my lifetime. That was back in 2004 when I shot “Sunburst”. Tonight was a close second! I made this image off my Uncle Budde and Aunt Sheryl’s deck. I was out of breath from running as fast as I could with my gear to get in position before the lightshow started to fade away. I could see Rachel down the beach at the water’s edge at Stearns Beach.
