NOTE FROM THE

W

ith that said, we have a HUGE announcement. After years of being printed in lower Michigan and being “good,” this issue in your hands is going for “great” and is now 100% made in Traverse City! Tom and I officially partnered with great local people that have become our exclusive printing company— Dave Moore, Owner/CEO of VP Demand Creation Services and his incredible team, including Melissa O’Brien and Mike Revard. Why were we never printed in TC before, you ask? Well, the quality and production of our magazine was only possible on large web printing presses, of which there are only a handful in Michigan. VP created a competitive opportunity for us to utilize their sheet fed presses, which are a little slower, but they produce even better quality. All in all, it’s a win-win to finally be produced right in our backyard. No other Traverse City magazine is printed locally, so this claim is a big deal to us.

In this monumental issue we are ecstatic to feature the work of Gray Malin. He is an internationally famous photographer who has created a multi-million dollar empire on the simple concept of “make everyday a getaway.” His worldwide travels are adventures we all dream of. He captures these spectacular images that covet walls of prominent buildings, of the homes of the rich and famous, and of regular people too. Last summer, he flew over northern Michigan, camera in hand, hanging out of a helicopter and captured a new series to add to his global collection. He was thrilled to share it with us and have a chat. You are in for a treat and so is your coffee table. The concept of giving up good to go for the great is a continual thread in the pages ahead. We share the news of current business owners branching out to expand locations and new concepts as well as more smiling faces on the town feeling great about being social.

Even the home we share with you was good but for the new homeowners Randy and Barb Oostra but they went all in and gave up good for great. The transformation is breathtaking. Sit on the porch and kick back as you dive into the pages. It’s a snapshot of our future. Because in this “good” place we call home, as spring kicks into bloom, the sun shines, the water sparkles, the days become longer and warmer, we morph into summer. We know it’s going to be not just “great,” but epic. See you out on the bay. Cheers!

PRESIDENT AND CEO TRAVERSE CONNECT Back in 2019 Traverse Connect and the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce merged into one organization, why? “It was the culmination of several years of work and planning by a broad group of community leaders. The merger combined the best attributes of the two organizations, creating a modern structure to more effectively address the needs of our businesses and region with a complete set of economic development and chamber services under one roof, allowing the new Traverse Connect to serve as the quarterback organization for the regional economy.” As the President & CEO what drives you every day? “I love complex problems and our work takes place at the nexus where economics, business, finance, and government policy collide and interact in incredibly complex ways. It is always challenging - it’s like playing 3D chess in the dark.” Are there any words of wisdom you live by? “Always hustle, never quit; ‘can’t’ is not a word in my vocabulary.” What three words best describe you? “Decisive, driven, and focused (perhaps too much sometimes…)” Tell us something that would surprise us about you? “I’ve been in three avalanches (two in Utah, one in Austria). Also, my nightly therapy and decompression is cooking a big, intricate meal to the sound of loud Cuban music.” If you could have a superpower, what would it be, and why? “To slow down time and savor every experience.” You met your wife at Graduate School in Rome. How did you persuade a fiery Spanish/Southern California girl to move to Northern Michigan? “I am a very, very good salesman; I talked up the benefits for raising kids, prior to moving I only brought her to visit in early August when the weather is perfect, and I promised that we would always take an extended vacation every year in Spain to visit her family.” What would Marina and your kids tell us about you? “I’m far more intense than most people realize. I’m a good skier. I’ve got killer dad jokes.” What is one thing you have checked off your bucket list? “I ran the full Bayshore Marathon. I was a ski bum in Alta. I’ve lived in Rome.” How would your family spend the perfect Traverse City day? “We are townies (downtown residents) and this time of year it is all about enjoying TC; kick off the day with a walk to Espresso Bay for their iced espresso, then depending on the temperature, either a bike ride on the Tart Trail followed by a picnic at Clinch Park or sailing on the bay. Later, some Spanglish takeout enjoyed on the patio of Left Foot Charley, paired with their award-winning wine made with grapes from our family farm.” 16

Sexy is Back in Old Town Lindsey Hale is bringing sexy back to Old Town with Modus45 2.0. We can attest if you put in the work attending exercise classes at her new Union St. studio, a body by Modus45 is a sexy one. Along the way, you’ll meet amazing women who will become fast friends. What is Modus45? Traverse City native Megan Madion transformed local women’s workouts when she launched her Modus45 method of exercise in a hip studio adjacent to her then home on Sixth St. With Megan’s endless energy and passion, it was an instant success, not to mention the amazing results. She created an entire movement of Modus maidens, including Lindsey. Officially hooked, Lindsey became a teacher in 2015. We can finally be social and in person again now that Megan has passed the torch to Lindsey. 406 S. Union St., modus45.com. MICHAEL POEHLMAN PHOTOGRAPHY

Front & Center There is saying: “Don’t settle for a spark. Wait for the wildfire!” For Dean Sparks, owner of Sparks BBQ, it rings true. He was just a spark back in 2016 starting his humble food truck as a homegrown BBQ dad. As the sparks—and time—flew, he launched a small location. His BBQ empire grew, fanning the flames of success, and he opened a restaurant in 2017 on the corner of Cass and Front. Now he’s lighting up late nights in Traverse City with entertainment in a venue he’s named Encore 201. With its second-floor windows overlooking Front St. and an impressive live lineup of acts to discover, it looks like the recipe for a smoking hot night out. On the website you’ll find a calendar of music in all genres, D.J.s for dancing, a little comedy, and a few surprises. Encore 201 can hold 128 people, so bring your friends! Events are ticketed or cover charges are applied. At the bar, mixologists are serving up top-shelf craft cocktails. It’s mostly standing room only with tables and bar stools for early birds. 201 E. Worth the Wait

West Front Street’s new restaurant, Modern Bird, is almost coming to fruition. For the ecstatic owners it will be well worth the wait. We introduced you to the dynamic baking husband and wife team Andy Elliott and Emily Stewart last year. They were spending one last summer at their pop-up tent at the Sara Hardy Farmers Market while renovations were underway to transform the building that will house their dream restaurant right next to Mary’s Kitchen Port. The couple met in Chicago, and Emily was excited to move back home after their son Daniel was born. “We love that food is social. We want our restaurant to be comfortable and nostalgic. We love that we will be restoring a building to its grandeur.” They launched their baked goods to get a feel for the local community, gaining a huge following. “Traverse City has its own culture and community,” adds Andy. “We are planning seating for 36, with a full bar and open kitchen concept. It’ll be a 9 a.m.-9 p.m. kind of place with breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We’ll have craft cocktails using a lot of local distilleries and natural wines.” 541 West Front St. modernbirdtc.com

Coastal The fab four business partners that made casual dining cool again in Traverse City with Mama Lu’s and The Flying Noodle are hoping to strike oil again opening The Burrow TC. Better known as the old beloved Tuscan Bistro, the space will be transformed with a bright coastal theme and a larger open concept kitchen. The Burrow TC plans to serve Californiainspired American cuisine with a “fresher take on classics” including fresh fish, entrée salads, and crab cakes to name a few. It will be a welcome addition for locals and visitors alike. With their savvy out-of-the-box thinking, the husbandand-wife teams of Adrienne Brunette and John Larson, along with Heather and Dallas Dziedzic, have a unique plan: to make good use of underground tunnel that connect The Burrow TC and Elmwood Township Marina. They will have a dedicated delivery for diners on the go . Just in time for boating season, Burrow TC is hoping for a June opening. 12930 S West Bay Shore Dr. Standing outside the old Tuscan Bistro - Fab Four,

taste test

Dean Sparks is stepping out of his BBQ box. At our photo shoot we scored a sneak preview (and mouthwatering taste) of menu items ready to launch at Encore 201. Whipped up down below in the Sparks BBQ kitchen for us to taste test: Margherita pizza—which was scrumptious—and chicken skewers that had a little spice. One of the perks of photographing food is that sometimes we get to eat it. Dean originally launched the upstairs entertainment space with a top-shelf bar only, but later changed his mind. “We realized we have to serve food,” Dean explains. It’s a good thing because people get hungry on a late night out. Small plates of yummy food make everything more enjoyable. Other items that will debut on the menu: black bean burgers, mushroom pot stickers, BBQ chicken flatbread, spicy feta veggie roll-up, seared ahi tuna with Asian slaw, and Naan bread served with spicy feta dip and assorted veggies. 201 E. CHEERS with Darric from Folgarelli’s

Summer Sipping We are in the early stages of what looks to be an incredible summer in beautiful Northern Michigan. With the temperature outside continuing to rise, our palates for both food and wine tend to change a bit. Lighter fare dishes during the warm weather lend themselves to some delicious summer styled wines. Rosé, is of course, one of the go-to wines of summer. One of my new finds, and subsequently one of my new favorite roses is Minuty from Provence, France. Classic in style, this rose is a blend of Grenache, Cinsault and Syrah boasting bright aromas of currant and orange peel. On the palate, Minuty is “smooth with a nice acidulous freshness,” with hints of strawberry and it is quite refreshing.

The New York Restaurant offers eclectic cuisine in a comfortable setting, overlooking Little Traverse Bay’s waterfront featuring fine gourmet dining, a professional and attentive wait staff and talented bartenders.

From the Northern Michigan wine scene, I recently tasted through a lineup of wines from Big Little Winery, and one of my favorites of the group was the Open Road Rosé. A blend of 50% Pinot Gris, 25% Foch and 25% Riesling, this wine jumps alive in your mouth with flavors of Jolly Rancher, lush fruit, and a balanced acidity. Stop in for a tour of numerous other goodies for your summer enjoyment.

Dockside Market

i Bob Mikowsk mily’s makes his fa y. Uncle famous Jerk ckside Do as w ll Bi ner in w r/o de foun the 70s.

Along M-22 in Traverse City sits a hidden gem in plain sight: Dockside Market. This place has been a staple of the community since the early ’70s. It’s not just a last-minute stop to pick up beer, wine, and spirits…well, yes, it is (with awesome, friendly staff). But it’s also a homemade “foodie find” treasure. It recently got a facelift with new paint, a new sign, and upgrades. But most regulars don’t care. They flood in for the famous jerky— which has been legendary for 40 years—and the delectable deli counter. It’s a culinary heaven packed with a big fat side of serious flavor. People in the know do the Deli Dash. Around lunchtime, hungry customers dash in for overflowing, meaty sandwiches and scrumptious wraps that are lip-smacking good, all wrapped neatly and lined up by the dozens. Savor a Spicy Bob wrap stuffed with juicy turkey, sharp cheddar, cucumber, jalapeño, lettuce, and spicy mayo. Go all-in with a Childish Bambino: salami, pepperoni, smoked gouda, provolone, pickle, lettuce, and basil mayo all crammed inside a French baguette. Food Manager Justin Chouinard keeps things fresh and tempting, with daily mouthwatering specials. Jessie Strong, Operations Manager, points out Dockside’s dedication to buying local. “We love that we have local vendors. Our bread is fresh from 9 Bean Rows, and our meats are from Louie’s Meats. In summer we get our veggies from the farmer’s market. We carry Shorties Shortbread and Ponyboy Bake Drop. We carry local cider, beer, and wine as much as we can.” If bread is off your menu, there is a to-go refrigerator with chopped Chef salad, 3 cheese tortellini, and broccoli salad options, and dips like Mexican cottage cheese and Dockside hummus. Craving cheese and wine? They have that too, alongside a posh fridge featuring smoked oysters, olives, jellies, pickles, and all that jazz. “Every summer, we put a dock out on West Bay across the street. It’s just for boaters to pull up and stock up,” says Jessie. That’s a hot tip right there! It’s a popular last stop for ice and Moomers ice cream too. If they don’t have it, you don’t need it. 13418 S West Bay Shore Dr., 231-947-7850 www.docksidem22.com 24

Private Cruises

Ahoy, matey! One of the trends coming out of the pandemic has been the rise of private cruises on the bay. Last year, private sailboat charters were the hottest ticket in town. They are the ultimate VIP experience—intimate and private and can be as laid back or fun-filled as you want. It’s a priceless way to entertain up to six guests, perfect for family and friends coming into town. The Wanderlust Lifestyle of Gray Malin

W

hen we discovered internationally renowned fine art photographer Gray Malin had added a Northern Michigan series to his quintessential world travels collection, we were intrigued. His eye-popping pictures encompass all corners of the world. Famous for forging his art into a larger lifestyle brand with his philosophy to “Make Every Day a Getaway,” his successes include three New York Times best-selling books that grace coffee tables of the dreamers and the rich and famous alike. His exotic and vivid images combine the spirit of travel, adventure, luxury, and artistry. His work is displayed in collectors’ homes, prestigious hotels, and prominent public spaces all around the world. Alongside the most iconic bucket-list beaches like Bora Bora, Bondi Beach, and the Amalfi Coast, we recognized familiar sites of home—Charlevoix, Bay Harbor, Sleeping Bear Dunes and more. Gray has captured our up north Caribbean paradise in all its glory.

“I have a lot of history with Michigan - my great grandparents built a summer house on Lake Michigan in a very unique community that has bred life-long friendships and family memories. Each summer when I was a kid I spent time there with the same families year after year so it holds a very special place in my heart. I even got married in this community so, as you can imagine, some of my favorite memories have been in Michigan! After my husband and I became parents, we decided to buy our own summer home within the neighborhood just a short walk from my family’s original home. Since the neighborhood is on the edge of Lake Michigan many of the homes are built on sand dunes between the green fields and towering forests - it is truly an amazing place to spend summers here with my family.”

At what age did you pick up your first camera, and what was your inspiration? “My grandfather had a camera collection and so my father kind of picked up the habit as well. I used to love looking at my grandparent’s old photographs from traveling around the world. It wasn’t until high school that I really developed a passion for photography after spending time in the dark room and marveling at my images developing before my eyes.” Sleeping Bear Dunes

What three words best describe you? “Adventurous, joyful, driven.”

You travel the world, how many countries have you photographed, and do you have a favorite? “It’s hard to keep track but I’ve definitely shot on all seven continents and in far away locations such as Bhutan and Namibia. One of my favorite places I have ever been is South Africa. I have extensive city and travel guides on my website, graymalin.com which I invite everyone to check out!” MAY/JUNE 2022 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

You create visions of bucket-list dreams that evoke passion and emotion. What do you love most about what you do? “I love being able to connect with people through my artwork. Knowing that customers look at my photographs on their walls everyday and that it brings them a bit of joy, or an escape, is extremely fulfilling. Whether someone connects with my work because the place holds a special place in their heart, because it inspired them, or because it gives them a sense of happiness, I am always thrilled to hear how my work impacts people’s lives.”

What would your husband tell us about you? “He would tell you that I am a regular guy with a knack for romantic comedy movies, chips and salsa, and love spending time on, in or near a body of water.”

What is your perfect day? “A beach day with my family in Hawaii - I love getting to spend all day with my kids and soaking up the sun.”

Do you take your husband and twins on location when you shoot? “A lot of times my trips are pretty quick. I’m usually either on location with my team to shoot - and those days are jam packed - or I’m up in a helicopter shooting for my aerial series. Therefore I try to separate work trips and family trips since they are very different experiences.”

To own a vacation home up north

is to experience happiness in its truest form, a joyful simplicity that reminds us of what’s important in life: love, laughter, family, quality time, and an appreciation of natural beauty. For Randy and Barb Oostra, it was Barb’s idea to retreat into northern Michigan. “I love that it’s drivable,” she explains. “We are both from small towns in the Midwest; we love the Midwest. We had a place in Florida but realized we are not Floridians,” laughs Randy. Each time they hop in the car and escape Ohio,

it’s a journey to serenity. As Randy explains, “Our routine involves listening to podcasts, which we don’t normally do. We have marked rest stops where we switch drivers, and only one gas station where we rush in and rush out. We don’t lollygag because we want to get there. As we turn into Crystal Downs and pull into the driveway, it’s just so relaxing. The lake is right there. We walk in and our stress levels are gone. We sit on the deck with a glass of wine, and we could do that for the rest of our lives.” If it’s chilly, they sit in their great room and turn on the fire, but they always open a bottle of wine served with cheese and crackers. Their awe-inspiring view is from high upon a bluff,

showcasing the majestic Lake Michigan in all its splendor. They wind down and marvel at the palatial hues of aquamarine greens and deep blues. It’s the perfect pairing to their wine and cheese aperitif. “We even sleep better there, more than any place in the world,” says Randy. “After a couple of years, you’d think you’d change something. We wouldn’t change anything.” MAY/JUNE 2022 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

It wasn’t that way at first. All the home had

going for it was, as the Realtors say, location, location, location. It checked the box of being on the water, and as avid golfers, it being nestled inside the grounds of world-renowned private golf course Crystal Downs was a big plus—they were already members. On the downside, it was a full-blown fixer upper! “There were two suspended wagon wheels that were lights and a note not to touch the drapes because they would fall down,” laughs Randy. “It had a dark basement with wood paneling, shag carpet. The mystery was the furnace two feet from the front door. Why would it be right there?” “It would be quite a transition, but we could see the vision,” says Randy. They’re no strangers to seeing something good right away: Barb and Randy were engaged after only four weeks of dating. “When you know you know!” Randy laughs.

Before

MAY/JUNE 2022 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

With a complete transformation needed to turn this dream into a reality, they enlisted a professional team made up of architect Bob Yvon, Ray Franks of Heartwood Custom Builders, and designer Angela Goodall of Kitchen Choreography.

High on their wish list was to make

room for their growing generations of family. They wanted to create separate spaces for all three married sons. “We have two little granddaughters and a new baby grandson,” Barb says proudly. MAY/JUNE 2022 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

55

The process for the Oostras

was an enjoyable one. “These three companies were all outstanding. We had a lot of meetings; we laughed a lot… it was always kept fun and light,” recalls Randy. “We had to build away from the water and toward the road because of the footprint.” They completely opened the house up and created an addition, adding height, width, and character, and incorporated large breezy windows to maximize glistening lake views. On the walls and ceilings, white shiplap adds soft and relaxed texture throughout, contrasting with repurposed dark wooden beams. “The big beams are part of the original house. They make it look cozy,” says Barb.

The overall ambience is coastal living at its most

comfortable—the ultimate beachy cottage—which was exactly the goal. “We’ve had flip flops and flowers before. We wanted this to feel very nautical with the waves of tile and brushed gold. The wallpapers all give it that cottage touch,” says Randy. Every wallpapered room takes on a whimsical charm with color and personality. It’s a triedand-true method with a fresh approach. “We call it the Angela touch,” says Randy. The real surprises are in the bathrooms: bold, one-of-akind shower tiles found in elaborate shapes and sizes that compliment outdoor elements from shiny pebble rocks to dazzling Caribbean blue sea glass. “In a swatch meeting, we asked Angela, ‘what do you think?’ She laughed and said, ‘I only present you things I like,’ which made it a lot easier for us,” recalls Randy. Barb’s favorite part of the house? “I just love our little pantry with the barn door. I think it’s because I don’t have anything like it at home.” The great room defines the word “great” itself: it’s an entire wing that faces the eye-catching water. “Angela did a fantastic job; she created a living environment that is appealing and comfortable,” says Randy.

The showstopper is the gleaming white kitchen, complete

with striking Cambria Quartz countertops and high-end Wolf appliances, a sure sign a capable chef cooks in there. “Barb does the cooking; I help and do what I’m told. We don’t go out much once we are here,” explains Randy. “Our daughters in-law enjoy cooking too,” adds Barb. Dangling above the island are magnificent chandeliers that sparkle in the sunlight and add refined finishing touches. “Angela helped us pick those out and they are great little conversations starters,” says Randy “They actually match the fabric on the chairs.” These are all part of the impeccable details of the design that manages to look effortless and casual. This is truly a blessed home. The complete Oostra family fills this house at every given opportunity, especially during their most cherished holiday, Fourth of July. “We have also met some wonderful people that are our neighbors. My next-door neighbor and I even became business partners,” Randy says. The monumental “wow” of this home is to witness the elevated views of Lake Michigan. “You always feel like you’re on a boat,” laughs Randy. “Your home is where you live. Our friends always say it’s such a beautiful home, yet it’s casual and it feels like someone lives here. We had such a great experience working with everyone. We all became close friends. It was a great project. I’d do it again.”
