t might be back-to-school season but that doesn’t mean the fun has to stop! I am inspired by local photographer Nick Hearn (@nckstagram), as he shows us where the action is in Northern Michigan through the lense of his GoPro Camera (page 34). Whether he is high in the sky on a hot air balloon, paddle boarding on crystal blue waters, or taking a brisk bike ride through the woods, his images capture the essence of upnorth adventure! As the colors outside turn, fall is the ideal time to taste local libations. Flip to page 28 to learn more about exploring the Leelanau Wine Trail. They recently took second place for “Best Wine Region in North America” by USA Today. Some of my personal favorite stops along the trail include Rove Estates, Mawby, and 45 North. However, truth be told, I have a few wineries I still need to explore… Wine tasting anyone? While you are out and about make sure to scout out new pop-up food vendor Rad•ish Street Food (follow them on Instagram for their latest location @rad. ishstreetfood). Vegan food has never tasted this good! I first ran into the pop-up this summer while

Sheryl Coston first experienced the magic of northern Michigan when she was just 22 and working in Interlochen for the summer. At the end of the season, as she traveled home on the SS Badger ferry and reflected on her summer adventure, Sheryl’s dream for the future became clear: “The north woods of Michigan is where I am going to retire.” Fast forward 40 years. So, you’re in the retirement business. When do you plan on retiring? I’m going to start working part-time when I’m 75. Seriously. I have no plans to slow down, but only to shift how I work over the years. We’ve set up the practice to work as a team. I’m not the only advisor. We have Heidi Thompson as well, and we’ve got a team of eight with various experiences. It’s really fun! How has the industry changed since you started? It’s been so dramatic, it’s hard for me to describe. The only way to simplify it is to say that, “You are responsible for your own retirement.” It wasn’t always this way. People must figure out so many details now in order to have an income in retirement. It’s sobering, but I see it as an opportunity. Why do you say, “The Tax Man Cometh?” Because, given the current political climate, and knowing that the current tax law sunsets in 2025, I believe that taxes are going up. Planning has become much more valuable to people. What do you think of Traverse City all these years later? Traverse City is magical. I’m almost afraid to say it because we are already on the map. But the energy here for entrepreneurs, deep thinkers and inventors is showing up in everything from the places we eat to the employment in the tech industries. It’s so exciting! What is the best advice your own clients have given you? Great question. My favorite advice has been to cover all my weaknesses by hiring people who excel at them, and to focus on my own strengths. I’ve tried to do that. I have also been encouraged to keep investing in my own education and real estate. If you could give me any piece of advice for lifetime success, what would it be? It’s different for each person. Start by asking your closest friends whom you trust the most to weigh in, “What are the skills I’m not pursing and should?” Most of us are afraid to ask this of our friends, but it’s when the real work begins – when we can get honest with them and ourselves. Michelle Ferrarese, owner and farmer at Birch Point Farm, says that autumn in Northern Michigan allows us some of the most diverse selections of produce anywhere in the world. As many as 80 different types of vegetables are grown at Birch Point throughout the year, as well as local flowers.

Birch Point Farm was founded in 2007 on a farmstead that dates back to the 1880’s. Recently their focus has been on season extension. The farm uses low-tech passive solar structures, like hoop houses to extend the growing season by protecting plants from low temps, wind, and hail damage. There is a great local market for seasonal produce during “swing” months, and it’s important for the local growers to hone their skills in order to thrive. Michelle says, “What are impressive to me are the peasant foods, the good keepers, and the hardy green things. These are low tech and old world, but are available and amazing to grow.” Michelle’s favorites are kale, collard greens, and cabbage, some of which can be harvested from under thigh deep snow! Michelle thinks of recipes as formulas, with opportunities to substitute a different ingredient at any time. Her very favorite “formula” is for sauteed greens, which can be used as a side dish or enjoyed as the main dish. The idea behind this recipe is simple, well balanced in flavor, and can reflect the very best of local seasonal produce. Contact the farm to sign-up for fall and winter CSA shares.

1 bunch hearty greens of your choice: kale, chard, collards, beet greens
1 handful of either: dried cherries, raisins, or currants
1 allium: onion, small shallot, leek, or scallions
Dash of olive oil
1 handful of chopped nuts: walnuts, pecans, pine nuts, or sunflower seeds
A few cloves garlic 1 acidic condiment: balsamic vinegar, lemon juice, chopped tomatoes, or verjus A dash of salt & pepper
Directions: Chop allium and leafy green, saute in olive oil over medium heat. (Separate the stems from leaves, cook them first so they have a chance to tenderize equally with the quicker-cooking leaves.) Add chopped garlic, and cherries/raisins/currants, saute until tender but still bright and vibrant. Remove from heat. Toss in toasted nuts and acidic condiments, salt and pepper.

Meat eaters and non-meat eaters alike have fallen in love with Rad•ish Street Food’s authentic vegan food, a new TC food pop-up by Michigan newcomers, Lisa Robinson (soon to be Moberly) and Ryan Moberly. The vegan chefs make about 90 percent of the food from scratch using local produce whenever possible, so there is a lot of love in every dish. Their style can be described as “Cali-Mex Vegan food,” which is basically a healthier version of Tex-Mex. Where to find this delicious cuisine? Rad•ish posts where their next location will be on Instagram and Facebook, and their followers meet them there. Formally personal chefs in Los Angeles, the owners now offer pop-ups, personal chef services, and small event catering for parties, meetings, and weddings throughout Northern Michigan. Fan favorites include scrumptious tacos, elote (Mexican street corn), and an almond ricotta pasta. The chef’s taco marinade is a secret mix between her family recipe and her own personal touches. Rad•ish’s slogan is “Kinda Rad. Kinda Street. But Mostly Kind.” To them, it’s a reminder to not only be aware of the food we put into our bodies, but to be kind to the people around us. “We are all so busy with our own drama and lives that we sometimes forget what others may be going through. Never in a million years could I ever comprehend someone losing their child, then it happened to me,” explains Robinson. “I realized that horrible things can happen to people and it’s not written on our faces, so we just need to be softer, nicer, more humble, and just listen. That’s what Rad•ish is all about, to do what you love, spread the love, and to be kind.”
Chef Lisa Robinson and her fiancé Chef Ryan Moberly’s story, as told by Lisa: There are a lot of layers as to why we decided to move to Traverse City. The biggest reason is that I was involved in a traumatic car crash in 2016. My sevenyear-old daughter Izabela and myself were headed to the Griffith Observatory in California when a reckless driver hit us. Izabela passed away from her injuries. It put me in a deep state of depression. I didn’t want to leave my bed because my grief and my love for her was so strong, and everything reminded me of her and what took place that day. It wasn’t until I discovered meditation, reiki, and Ryan that I was able to get motivated again. With time and a lot of inward thinking, I realized that I had two choices: I could be sad and go to a job that felt meaningless or I could get out and try to make a difference in the world. I realized that I could do something in Izabela’s honor, and if she is looking down on me I can make her proud. Nothing can change what happened that day, but I do have a choice on how to live out the rest of my life. I choose to be a positive influence in the same way my daughter was at such a young age. I knew I couldn’t keep up with the California lifestyle, so Ryan and I started searching for places to live. When I came to Traverse City with him to visit his friend, we ended up touring around Michigan and stayed at the Cherry Tree Inn during the fall. That was it for me. I have never seen a place with so many colors and I felt at home so quickly. In March 2019, we made our big move and now I feel like I am living a different life. Everyone here has been so warm and inviting. I really am so grateful to have found this type of happiness, especially since I never thought I’d feel it again.

Exploring the Leelanau Peninsula Wine Trail... The verdict from USA Today is in, and the Leelanau Peninsula wine trail was voted the second best wine route in the entire United States! There’s no question about that result (except how wasn’t it first?!), since it boasts dozens of unique and enchanting wineries, a gastronomique paradise, and views to mesmerize even the toughest critic. There are three mini-trails within it for easier touring: the Sleeping Bear Loop, the Northern Loop, and the Grand Traverse Bay Loop. While every tasting room offers different charms, from upscale elegance to sustainable viticulture, a day of Leelanau wine tasting reaches complete perfection by stopping at these diverse recommendations. Rove Estates on M-72, towards the Sleeping Bear Dunes, is just minutes from downtown Traverse City and is owned by fifth-generation farmer Creighton Gallagher. Due to their elevation at 1165 feet, the landscape creates prime conditions for premium estate-grown grapes: southern-exposed slopes, abundant sunlight, and cool-air drainage with protection from the frost. Nick Hearn specializes in capturing unique angles and perspectives. With Physical Therapy as his day job, Hearn spends his free time drawn to Northern Michigan’s gorgeous waters, which are clear, clean, and breathtakingly blue. He captures his adventures with a GoPro, since the camera’s wide angle field-of-view allows him the ability to create unique shots. Whether he is paddleboarding, sailing, hiking, or exploring trails, his captivating images are filled with action! “I love to make my photos pop with color and vibrance to really bring the viewer in,” he explains. “I’m a huge fan of using my GoPro action cameras: the regular GoPro Hero lineup cams and their 360 camera, the Fusion. They are so durable and compact that I can bring them anywhere.” Hearn moved to Northern Michigan from downtown Chicago about a year ago when his girlfriend, Madison Gardner, started her career as a TV reporter. She is part of a weekly show called The Four on 9&10 News out of Traverse City. The couple has been together for three years and she just happens to be one of his favorite photography subjects. “I come from a small town in Chicago, and when we first started dating she really pushed me to actually use my cameras,” explains Hearn. “She believed in me and I’m super grateful! She helps me with all my shots.”

Instagram has had a huge impact on Hearn’s photography and is often where he finds his inspiration. Follow him @ nckstagram. “I’ve become close friends with people (locally and all over the world) who have the same passion for photography,” explains Hearn. “We all share and feed off of each other’s work. The support on that platform has been so encouraging.” Through Instagram, he has had the opportunity to collaborate with various brands, including Schwinn Bikes, Theta 360 camera, iRocker Standup Paddleboards, Best Western, Life is Good, and Pure Michigan. Designing for
SMALL SPACES When designing for a client or for myself, I love to have fun in small spaces. Everyone has a functional bathroom or entryway, but who says they can only be practical? Little hallways or transitional spaces are opportunities to show one’s personality, so don’t underestimate them. I love powder baths! They are unexpected spaces to create a “wow” moment for you and your guests. Start by selecting a fun sink, such as a furniture piece or a floating vanity. Add character with a wildly patterned wall treatment. Choose bold lighting and just the right accessories for an unforgettable bathroom. Homeowner entries (a.k.a. mudrooms) are another great location to add a splash of personality and put a smile on your face after a busy day. Have fun with tiled flooring by using unique colors and patterns. Add shiplap or wallpaper to the open back of a boot bench to help define the room. Similarly, transitional spaces (usually hallways between rooms) are perfect spots to add a built-in bookcase or treat the ceiling with an unexpected texture and/or color. Visitors will take notice of the charming decor! Small spaces are the ideal opportunity to create a big impact… So, don’t be afraid to go out on a limb. Use colors and materials that make you smile! meets Lake Lodge Crafted with stone, incredible woodwork, and surrounded by natural beauty, one awe-inspiring home stands out on beautiful Torch Lake. Owner Brad Neagle started and built two separate biotechnology companies with a partner in Ann Arbor over the last twenty-five years. After both were sold, he and his family began coming up to Torch Lake regularly. “Our goal really was to build something on Torch Lake that we could share with extended family who mostly live in southeast Michigan, and it has worked out perfectly. When
the Neagle family began looking for property in 2013, they found a rare spot with over 300 feet of lake frontage. With an elevated area for a home, and easy access to the water, it was the ideal purchase. A small, older home existed on the property and was lived in by the family as they decided how they wanted their home to be designed. The process began with Aaron Draper of Draper Construction. In the fall of 2015, a carriage house was built in the style of the intended main house. In October 2016, the old original house was demolished and the new main house was started shortly after.

Boasting
approximately 6500 square feet in the main house and 1900 square feet in the carriage house, the homes comfortably allow twenty-five or more people to stay without feeling congested. There are 5 bedrooms and 5.5 baths between the two buildings, as well as an office and a hidden spare room that can be converted into sleeping space. For events like the Fourth of July, the Neagles entertain extended family for multiple days effortlessly. “This is partly due to the many great outdoor spaces as well,” Brad says. “The landscape design was almost as important to us as the house. We used 365 Outdoor for stone work and landscaping, and they were amazing. Everything fits and flows perfectly from house to landscape.”

Unique,
striking, and simply cool are the words to describe the interior of the main home. Dark wood is a theme throughout. A large hanging accent piece adds dimension in the main living area, with two beams of wood connected by interlocking black metal diamonds. The ceilings are all wood, with darker beams acting as foils to the lighter colors. Many of the items have been repurposed, such as the beams used for the massive hanging light fixture, which came from an old barn in Ohio. Interior decorator Angela Goodall from Kitchen Choreography was integral in recommendations and design. The kitchen appliances are top of the line, with a Subzero refrigerator, freezer drawers, wine storage, and beverage centers. A custom panel over the fridge kept the design sleek and sophisticated. The Wolf gas range and microwave oven adds to the high-quality. Kitchen Choreography supplied and installed all of the cabinetry in the home through Symphony, their in-house custom cabinetry shop. Angela worked with the homeowners on all of the design for the interior features, including rustic lighting, chandeliers, and furnishings. “It turned out fabulously,� Brad smiles.

The
rock fireplace is a work of art and amazing focal point. It starts in the basement and goes all the way to the top ceiling on the main floor, with all four sides visible on every level. It incorporates a stone mantel in the basement that alone weighs 3000 lbs. It was designed with Draper, Brian George of Rapid River Masonry, and the owners just scratching it out on paper. “That was one of the great things about building the house in general. Nothing was ever “written in stone”. Not even the stone!” Brad says. “We often talked over the aspects of the design as it was happening, and incorporated the best ideas as things were going up.” This flexible approach allowed the owners and builders to see, change, and adapt the design to the owner’s vision.

Inspired
by the image of a mill building on the lakeshore, the home is a seamless combination of vintage industrial meets lake lodge. The exterior of the home has endless stonework, from the walkway to the water, to below the massive windows. Dark wood siding is accentuated by the black metal trim. Tall trees provide shade and perfect areas for relaxing. Smaller sitting areas are scattered throughout the lawn, and act as cozy places to sit and read, or maybe just doze off on a nice day. and fun has new meaning in the great gathering space of the basement. A bar made from a large walnut slab easily seats ten bar stools, and is ready for craft cocktails and chilled wine. The beautiful slab was found by Aaron Draper through an Amish farmer near Reed City. “We originally had planned more of a typical bar with space for a bartender behind, and seating on only one side. Aaron convinced us to have seating on both sides of the bar with prep space at the cabinets on the wall. We are glad we did!” Brad says. A Subzero wine storage unit was built in, as well as a couple of under counter refrigerators and an ice maker. Both an industrial styled pool table and a custom made shuffleboard table with cast iron legs keep to the style and provide hours of competitive fun. Staying true to the special design, the owners found an antique cast iron grinding machine stand that Draper helped them make into a pub table. Period pieces are brought back to life and incorporated in various places in the home. With excellent entertaining possibilities and lakefront living, there’s something for everyone at this Torch Lake treasure. As hosts for extended family, the Neagles have ensured that everyone will have an outstanding time at this sophisticated home, and the chances that people decide to stay an extra day, or two, are better than ever.

Finding the Angles by Brad Reed
While teaching our Build-A-Book Workshop in the Porcupine Mountains State Park, I made this image just as it started to rain. All the rain that week really made the fall color pop. I used the down birch trees to build angles into the foreground of my composition. The angles help to create triangles and they make images look more three dimensional. Nikon D810.
