e inspired this holiday season! Having the honor of writing BayLife Magazine’s holiday feature this issue was pure joy. The story, found on page 36, is titled “Giving Back,” in it we list 24 handson ways to give back this season. While researching the countless opportunities to embrace giving in our community, I found myself excited to partake! Many of these acts of kindness are simple, like shoveling a neighbor’s driveway, or donating a toy to Toys for Tots. Others require more effort, for example, adopting a cat from a local shelter. With the recent passing of my father-in-law, Ken Kurjan,

You have been in the banking industry for over 20 years, what do you enjoy about it? I’ve always loved the personal connection in banking with my clients. There is nothing more private in life than finances, so you have to be connected. I just love when I get a call from a child or relative of a longterm client, I know I’ve become a trusted family advisor, not just their banker. Do you have any words of wisdom you live by? Never forget you work for the client. My paycheck may come from the bank, but I work for my clients. You can never take that relationship for granted, it’s too competitive a business. What three words could describe you best? Generous, funny, hardworking…. My wife came up with these, not bad! Who is your hero? Any football fan that was born and raised in Michigan and has been able to adopt a team other than the Detroit Lions as "their team". I would love not to have my heart ripped out year after year, and suffer from this completely irrational emotional investment in a team, and a game that I am acutely aware means absolutely nothing to me in reality... Go Lions! Are you a TC Native? If not, what was your journey here? I was born and raised in Flint and moved to TC with my wife, Stephanie. We met in college at Saginaw Valley State University. I was offered a position here or Mt. Pleasant. We rented an apartment and six months later we knew we had stay. You fall in love with Traverse City, and 20 years later here we are! What’s one thing that would surprise us about you? For a couple of years I thought I might be able to make a living as a beach volleyball player. Yeah, it didn’t end well... What is your family’s favorite holiday tradition? Skiing at Crystal Mountain on Christmas Day, and our Elf on the Shelf, named Lucky, is a blast every year.

The Tuesday Toolmen
HERO
BayLife Magazine’s “Northern Hero” focuses on highlighting inspiring individuals in our community. We seek to find people who give back in selfless ways. The Tuesday Toolmen are a group of handymen in the Traverse City area who focus on safety improvement and repair projects within the low-income elderly population. Tuesday Toolmen projects include building wheelchair ramps, installing chair platforms for the disabled, door repair and installation, and grab bar installation, among many other handy projects. The group is overseen by the United Way of Northwest Michigan and is entirely grant funded.
Andrew Dzierwa was born and raised in Traverse City and is passionate about promoting the people and culture within his hometown. Andrew works full-time at Hagerty, and enjoys fishing and playing the piano in his free time. To nominate an individual for this column email: kristy@baylifenorth.com

Al Swiderski and David Coyne are two members of the Tuesday Toolmen (among others). Al has been a member of the group for seven years, and David is a twelve-year veteran of the Toolmen. Both Al and David are retired, and they now spend each Tuesday giving back to the community. The Tuesday Toolmen certainly fly under the radar within our community — Al and David know this. But it is not the public recognition that keeps this team coming back each week. Rather, it is knowing that they have improved the lives of other people in subtle, yet meaningful ways. When asked whether they notice the impact of their work, David responded “We have actually made their day by doing something small.” For this team, it is just another Tuesday. As a designer, when clients start to feel overwhelmed with cabinetry selection, I take them back to the basics. I start by asking simple questions and get to know their lifestyle: Do you have kids or pets? Who is the cook in the family? Do you host many gatherings? What is your style: modern or traditional? All these questions help me narrow down what type of cabinetry best suits how they use their home day in and day out.
Cabinetry lines are constantly coming out with innovative ways to organize and make life easier. These internal accessories may help increase the functionality of room. Examples include: a trash bin pullout, hair accessory organizer, or a charging station.

Trying to decipher between framed vs frameless, particle board vs plywood boxes, or flat panel vs raised panel doors can be overwhelming. To help streamline this information, the best solution is to get a professional involved. An interior designer or kitchen designer will be able to walk you through the different cabinetry options available and help find what works for you.
The construction and quality of a cabinet are two important factors to consider. I may not suggest the fully custom, high-end line for a lower-level bathroom vanity because this is a room that may not be used often. Instead, I would suggest using that line in a kitchen where the cabinets will get used daily.

WHEN DRIVING BY KRISTIN AND CHRIS LUTZ’S HOUSE
on the Old Mission Peninsula, it is immediately evident that it is unlike most homes in Northern Michigan. “I envisioned this house for a long time,” said Kristin, who has been an interior designer for more than 20 years. “After seeing so many different projects for so many years, I knew exactly what I wanted.” Whether it’s the square pillars on the front porch, or the Chinese Chippendale railing on the roof of the entryway, it is certainly not ordinary looking. Two small, friendly dogs greet guests as they enter and, once guests look around, it’s easy to see that every single detail has been very carefully thought through. “Details are what make the home yours,” Kristin said. And, although it’s surely flawless and meticulous, it’s also easy to imagine family Christmases in the vaulted ceiling living room, or a home cooked dinner being served in the dining area.

BUILT IN 1971, Kristin and Chris bought the home
about 10 years ago and used it, and the beach across the street, as a summer getaway. As they became empty nesters, they decided to make the home their permanent residence and remodel it. The smaller size of the house is perfect for them, and the “bones” of the house are solid. So, with the help of architect Jessica Van Houzen-Stroud, the roof was raised, staircases and walls were moved, and the master bedroom, master bathroom, and den were added on. A complete remodel was done by builders Jack Biedron of Biedron Builders and Doug Reichert of Reichert Construction. Walking up to the home, the attention to detail starts with a New Orleans-inspired knot garden, a herringbone pattern stamped concrete front porch, blue steps, and a red brick walkway. Décor that can be seen outside can also be found inside. Inside, Kristin says she was going for an “updated classic” look, and it all started with a Henredon cabinet in the kitchen. Used as a pantry, the cabinet has an intricate Chinese pattern. “I envisioned the kitchen first,” Kristin said. “The rest of the house’s theme came after what I had in mind for the kitchen.” Throughout the
whole house, but most prominent in the kitchen, is blue and white Chinoiserie dishware. “I’ve always loved the Chinoiserie look,” Kristin said. “It has a modern, yet antique feel.” Bookshelves display the dishware in the kitchen, and more can be found on the dining room table, on the 12-foot long, walnut butcher block island, and on the white quartz countertops. While in the kitchen, take a look up to the vaulted shiplap ceiling and it drifts all the way to the living room. “I wanted to create a nautical feel, so there are quite a few beach themed things in the home,” Kristin explained. Drawings and paintings from local artists can be found throughout, but Kristin is most proud of the piece above the mantel. The drawing looks out to Power Island and it was created by Kristin’s sister, Kimber Bilby. “It’s a quiet moment in a room that has a lot going on,” she said. Inside the gas lit fireplace there are pieces of beach glass, from just across the street on their privately-owned beach, and “wood” that is made to look like driftwood. The fireplace is purposely off-center because the owners did not want to change the original footprint. A little nook, which was discovered in the remodeling process, can be found to the left of the mantel and it is used as a beverage station.

plank flooring down the hall and guests are sure to notice the real buffalo head that is hung above the staircase leading to the finished off basement. Chris is a University of Colorado alum, and Ralphie the buffalo is its mascot. “He came home from a U of C football game with that buffalo head,” Kristin says, laughing. The Lutz’s have coined their basement “Ralphie’s Lounge.” Chris’s band holds practice in Ralphie’s Lounge, and there is also a sitting area, bar, and workout room. Across from the basement’s stairway is the house’s only powder room, complete with blue tiger wallpaper. “I love wallpaper and I knew I wanted to incorporate it into the house,” Kristin said. The narrow hallway boasts more local artwork displayed in distinctive frames. Although Kristin and Chris are empty nesters, their three kids do make an appearance here and there. Down the hall, there is a kid’s room with bunk beds and another kid’s room that doubles as a guest room. There is slightly less detail is in these rooms, but they are not devoid of the theme. A full bathroom is across from these rooms that is black and white, with penny tile on the floor and subway tile in the shower. Walk further down the hall to an added-on den, master bedroom, and master bathroom. Kristin wanted a private, quiet place where she could get away and think. The room has Chinese themed wallpaper, an ornate chandelier, and other themed décor, amongst some personal photos and artwork, including some artwork from their daughter.

has white tile work, a white standalone bathtub and an all glass shower, complete with garden stool to coincide with the house’s theme. Perhaps the most noticeable item in the master bedroom is the chandelier that is comprised mostly of beach glass. One of Kristin’s favorite parts about her home can be seen as she wakes up in the morning, when she looks out of the French doors in the master bedroom – and that is the courtyard landscape in the backyard.

DESIGNED BY LANDSCAPING ARCHITECT Anita Silverman of Silverman and Company, the once cement-only backyard was turned into something that looks like it could be in Europe. Small, red gravel makes up the walkway, small plants and bushes line the edges, and a large planter is in the center. Strings of lights hang overhead for evening entertaining. Chinoiserie plates are in a collage on a wall to bring part of the inside theme out. “The courtyard is easily one of my absolute favorite spots of what we built,” Kristin said. Although the courtyard landscaping and kitchen are high on Kristin’s list of favorites, she says her ultimate favorite part of her home is the view of the bay. She can easily see Power Island from any front window, perfect for sunsets and lazy summer days. A quick walk across the street and swimming and boating can be easily enjoyed. “The water is one of the main reasons we bought the house to begin with,” she explains. Remodeling this 1970s era home took one year to complete. “After designing other people’s homes for more than 20 years, I couldn’t wait to do something for us,” Kristin said. “It’s the details in this home that really bring it to life – really make it ours. I am so proud of how it all turned out.”
