his is the season for giving and receiving, a time to show gratitude and reflect. As I write my first “Letter from the Editor”, I am reminded of all I am thankful for this holiday season: my family, friends, health, and happiness. For me, the “star on top of the tree” has been being blessed with an amazing new position as Managing Editor with BayLife Magazine. I am overwhelmingly grateful for the opportunity and the ability to balance both work and motherhood. I have the honor of creating, which is one of my deepest passions in life. I am thankful! What I have always loved about magazines is that each issue is different. It’s a tangible item that is constantly changing itself, yet once printed, the hard copy remains forever. You came to the United States from Poland thirteen years ago. How did you get into the mortgage business? I graduated from the University of Warsaw in Economics and always loved working with numbers and people. My family moved from Poland to Chicago, where I ended up meeting some great people in the industry. Today, I am still passionate about helping homeowners with their financial needs. In fact, this has earned me, for four years running, the “The Chairman’s Club” designation which recognizes the top 10 mortgage lenders at Chemical Bank. In a competitive field of local bankers, what sets you apart? My drive for success! I am very tenacious about meeting the challenges that come up during a financing transaction to get my customers to the closing table. In the early 1980’s, she worked through the requirements to get a green card to come to America and build a better quality of life for her three children. She worked three jobs to provide for her children and grandchildren by sending money back to Poland. At that time, Poland was a communist country so working conditions and wages were not favorable. What would your children say about you? I have two boys, ages 9 and 4 years old. My boys are my world. When I asked them the question they both responded, “Mom, you are so kind, thoughtful and have a big heart.” If you could have a superpower, what would it be? I would love to be able to teleport myself, so I can be closer to some of the people I love and care for in Poland, like my mom. It would be so awesome to have coffee with her every morning in person instead of Skype. You love shoes, dare we ask how many pairs you own? I think I was born in heels. People often ask me how I can walk in them. I am not very tall so I do like to add a few inches to my height. In Europe, females commonly wear high heels everywhere, even my grandmother. As far as how many, I would be afraid to count. 20

Saving the Slopes: Hickory Hills Ski Area Hickory Hills Ski Area has been saved thanks to a huge community effort. The newly renovated ski area is scheduled to be up and running for the winter 2018/2019 season. Many updates have been made, including a new ski lodge. In addition, four new downhill ski runs have been created. The terrain park, bunny hill and rail park have been moved to accommodate more features. The Nordic ski trails have been expanded to allow for beginner through advanced terrain. This project has truly been a collaboration, enlisting the help of the City of Traverse City, Preserve Hickory, the Joint Rec Authority, the Hickory Meadows Advisory Committee, and countless volunteers from a variety of user groups. Turkey Gravy
Yield: 2.75 Lbs. Pan size: 9” X 13”
Yield: 2 Qts.. Pan size: 4 Qt
Portion size: 4 Oz. Temperature: 350°
Ingredients: 4 Oz. Onion, minced 4 Oz. Celery, minced 4 Oz. Bacon fat or butter 1 .5 Lbs. Bread, cubed, day-old (I prefer focaccia) 8 Fl oz. Turkey Stock, hot - Chicken stock may be substituted 1 Ea. Egg 1 Tbsp. Salt, kosher .5 Tsp. White pepper, ground 1 Tsp. Rosemary, fresh chopped 2 Tbsp. Parsley, fresh chopped 1 Tsp. Sage, fresh chopped 8 Oz. Pecans shelled, roasted, chopped 2 Oz. Butter, melted - For drizzle with maple syrup 2 Fl oz. Maple syrup - Mixed with melted butter, (above) Method: • Sauté the onions and celery in the bacon fat until tender. • Combine the bread, stock, and egg and add to the onion/celery mixture. • Add the parsley, sage, rosemary, pecans, salt, and pepper. Mix well. • Place the stuffing in a buttered 9”X13”, cover with parchment paper and foil. • Bake at 350°F/177°C for 45 minutes. • Remove the foil and parchment evenly drizzle the maple/butter mixture over the stuffing. • Enjoy.

Dog Sledding with Mike King Children may be on the alert for Rudolph and his reindeer friends pulling Santa’s sleigh, but they’re more likely to see Mike King and his beautiful Siberian Huskies around town! Twelve dogs make up the perfect team of Pets That Pull. Mike and wife Lee first decided to try their hand at sled dogs when a friend needed to re-home his husky. They resolved to raise it, and soon thought that it needed a puppy friend. Once the second dog arrived, Mike realized that adding a third dog would allow them to sled! The decision was the start of canine cheer. The sled team is led by Cookie and Jynks. Jynks is the Alpha dog, and instructs the others with his dominant personality. New to the group are two young dogs, Abbott and Costello, and a Border Collie named Maya helps herd them all. Although often confused for racing dogs, these purebred huskies are more approachable and less energetic, making them child friendly. Mike’s favorite local place to sled is the TART trail, where the dogs are kept in shape during the off season by pulling Mike on a cart with wheels. In the winter, these happy pups also demonstrate their adoration of children by waiting for them outside of the ski school, ready to be hugged and petted. Mike works at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire, Michigan, teaching skiing and snowboarding. He offers dog sled rides on Saturday afternoons and during the holidays. The not to be missed sled rides are offered at the Schuss Nordic Center at Shanty Creek Resorts. The half-mile long adventure loops around the fairway. For a fun, unique and thrilling dog sledding experience, the rides are booked through the front desk in Schuss Village.

As an Interior Designer, one of the biggest challenges I encounter is when I am asked to help design a client’s stairway. Often this element is one of the first structural components you see when entering through the front door, so it sets a little of the stage for the home’s overall feel. If it is a multi-level structure, it may often travel up, down and up, and down. It may be winding with a landing or just a straight run. Some of my clients opt for a simple approach with a wood capped ½ wall that would be either drywalled or clad with a wood treatment like the ever-popular shiplap. Others prefer a more traditional approach consisting of wood or metal (or combination) spindles with a typical wood newel and handrail. As with anything home design, new products and approaches have entered the scene. Metal, glass and free floating treads have all been common requests in the last few years. Do tubular black iron for the handrails, cable or glass for the barrier and floating planks of wood for treads sound familiar? So, where’s the challenge? Sounds fun, right? Well, the State of Michigan has fairly strict codes that must be enforced when it comes to stair systems. No opening can be larger than what a 4” diameter ball can fit through. The handrails need to meet graspable requirements and be continuous the entire run of the stairway. Treads and Risers have a minimum and maximum that must fit into the constraints of the rise and run. Good thing I am a math major by education! Don’t let the sound of this scare away you from designing the stairway of your dreams. It could be one of the most important aspects of your home’s design and I am always up for the challenge!

yet has a warm, nautical feel. Upon entering, it has a grand feeling with high beaded barrel ceilings and opposing staircases decorated with patterned stair runners. The main living room features custom yellow painted walls and sophisticated blue accent dĂŠcor. Designed with both water and sky in mind, the highlight of the room is its large floor to ceiling windows that allow you to enjoy the vast view.

“As you are drawn in by the grandness
and the view in front of you, you are then truly comforted by the interiors, making you want to snuggle in on the sofa, have a glass of wine on the screened in porch, or just sit at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee,” explained the home’s interior designer Michele Cerny of Lakeview Interior Design. “It truly has the feeling of a resort lake home, a place to relax and unwind...just take a breath and enjoy.” The home was originally built in 1995 by Burkholder Construction with Louis Des Rosiers as the architect. Its most recent renovation, completed in June 2018 by Burkholder, gave this already beautiful space a freshening up. All hands were on deck for the construction job, which included the addition of a library and a spacious master closet. A redesign of the kitchen, master bath, guest bedrooms and bathrooms was also central to the project. “I was going for the “wow” lake home factor,” explains interior designer Cerny. “With all the windows drawing you to the outside, I wanted my clients to feel like the colors, textures and features around them inside had the same beauty that’s matched outside.” Cerny was able to accomplish her ultimate goal. Throughout the space there are custom fabrics and soft finishes, making it truly feel custom built. 56

One of the most impressive rooms
in the home is the library, which features a lit coffered ceiling with stunning trim work by the talented craftsmen at Inception Woodworks and Burkholder Construction. The fireplace stands grandly as the central focus of the room, giving it a priceless, intimate, and inviting atmosphere. There are two massive pocket doors entering the office space that offer a secluded getaway when needed. An inviting window seat opens up the room, creating a perfect space to cozy up with a good book during a winter blizzard. A spacious master closet added square footage and a taste of ultimate luxury. Special attention was paid to every last detail including a marble topped island, crisp white cabinets designed for specific items, and accent lighting throughout. Directly next door is the master bathroom, complete with vanities, an inviting soaking tub, glamorous mirrors, and a white marble mosaic backsplash that pairs beautifully with an Imperial Azul granite countertop. The Master bedroom itself is impressive with massive windows facing the peaceful blue water.

The kitchen is one of the central gathering areas and was completely redone with custom designed cabinets by Inception Woodworks. To accommodate the owner’s grown family and multiple visitors, the designer added seating around the island. Other amenities include a Sub Zero paneled fridge, Wolf cooktop and warming drawer, Bosch paneled dishwasher, a minibar and a Kitchenaid paneled trash compactor. An artistic tile backsplash over the range in the kitchen is reminiscent of a Celtic knot, a nod to the owner’s Irish heritage. The Irish themed personalization is hidden throughout the home in selected fabrics and even a Celtic knot pattern on the back plate of a light fixture.

One of the favorite gathering places for the owner’s multiple guests is the screened in porch. It offers a crisp
breeze that is enjoyable on hot summer nights. The space is perfect for quiet reading by the fireplace or groups of friends laughing as they enjoy a glass of wine. Looking up, the beaded ceiling is a beautiful light blue paint color named “Silver Mist”, another soft touch that contributes to the “lake home feel”. What is a “lake home” without a beach? Well, the direct bay frontage on the property has soft sand and lends itself to fun activities on the bay like water skiing, tubing and paddleboarding. Big Star by Brad Reed Upon discovering that even in snowshoes, I was unable to walk over the five-foot snow drifts on the utility road to Big Sable Point Lighthouse, I had to figure out another way to get there. After using some good risk assessment, I decided my best course of action was to walk on the ice a few hundred yards off shore. After almost a mile and a half of treacherous walking and crawling, I made it to the lighthouse. Exhausted and hot, I made this image in seven degree weather, made chillier by 20 mile-per-hour winds.
