“It’s not what’s under the Christmas tree that matters, it’s who’s around it.”

LETTER FROM THE

editor

The events highlighted at the beginning of each issue in our “On the Town” section include many of the individuals who are contributing to our community in countless ways. Make sure you check out photos for these fabulous outings: The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Michigan evening at The Boathouse, Munson Hospice Golf Outing at LochenHeath Golf Club, Home Builders Association Scholarship Dinner, and the Traverse Bay Children’s Advocacy Center event.

T

his is the season for giving and receiving, a time to show gratitude and reflect. As I write my first “Letter from the Editor”, I am reminded of all I am thankful for this holiday season: my family, friends, health, and happiness. For me, the “star on top of the tree” has been being blessed with an amazing new position as Managing Editor with BayLife Magazine. I am overwhelmingly grateful for the opportunity and the ability to balance both work and motherhood. I have the honor of creating, which is one of my deepest passions in life. I am thankful! What I have always loved about magazines is that each issue is different. It’s a tangible item that is constantly changing itself, yet once printed, the hard copy remains forever. With every new edition we are reinventing, rewriting, and renewing to make a product that people enjoy reading. So, for my first issue as Managing Editor, which happens to be our Holiday Issue, I wanted to create a gift for everyone involved. Not just for our cherished readership but for owners Tom and Teri Gorsline, the entire staff at BayLife, and our advertisers who help make a publication like this possible. I want this issue to be the BEST and thanks to a massive group effort, I think we succeeded! Here are some of the glorious gifts found throughout the issue:

HOLIDAY 2018 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

Your taste buds will thank you after you bite into a slice of Alley’s Market pizza, featured in Wicked Eats. This pizza is Detroit-style, with a crisp buttery crust and fresh toppings. It’s one of my favorites and will be yours too! Good thing the holidays are not about eating low carb… That’s what New Year’s resolutions are for! New contributing writer Amanda Renkiewicz gives us an in-depth look at family traditions in Northern Michigan. From cutting down your own Christmas tree to watching the Cherry Ball Drop on New Year’s Eve, we explore all of the family holiday goodness our region offers. Amanda is a wonderful writer who is a Traverse City native. We are excited to have her on board! The gift of gratitude is found sewn throughout this magazine, and for me, this is a concept that is cherished. I am honored that Tom and Teri have trusted me to come on board and help expand their editorial vision. Since launching in 2012, they have created this beautiful publication and given back to our community in countless ways, including distributing over 60,000 free copies of BayLife in the past year alone. Recently, the duo decided to take a risk and made some impressive changes, including a larger matte cover and an expanded editorial staff. It is paying off! They are consistently supporting local charities and reaching out to give a hand up to small businesses and entrepreneurs. Thank you, Tom and Teri, for gifting our community with a beautiful magazine that celebrates what makes Northern Michigan so special! From our family to yours-

MOVERS & SHAKERS MARTA COUTURIER

MARTA COUTURIER

You came to the United States from Poland thirteen years ago. How did you get into the mortgage business? I graduated from the University of Warsaw in Economics and always loved working with numbers and people. My family moved from Poland to Chicago, where I ended up meeting some great people in the industry. Today, I am still passionate about helping homeowners with their financial needs. In fact, this has earned me, for four years running, the “The Chairman’s Club” designation which recognizes the top 10 mortgage lenders at Chemical Bank. In a competitive field of local bankers, what sets you apart? My drive for success! I am very tenacious about meeting the challenges that come up during a financing transaction to get my customers to the closing table. Chemical Bank is an institution that allows me to be creative with a variety of different products: New Construction, Renovation, Purchase of an existing home, Specialty Programs for Physician and Private Banking customers, Veteran loans and many more. Local decision making by experienced management helps set me apart from all my competitors! What are 3 words that best describe you? Grateful, Caring and Honest. Who is your hero? My Grandmother. In the early 1980’s, she worked through the requirements to get a green card to come to America and build a better quality of life for her three children. She worked three jobs to provide for her children and grandchildren by sending money back to Poland. At that time, Poland was a communist country so working conditions and wages were not favorable. What would your children say about you? I have two boys, ages 9 and 4 years old. My boys are my world. When I asked them the question they both responded, “Mom, you are so kind, thoughtful and have a big heart.” If you could have a superpower, what would it be? I would love to be able to teleport myself, so I can be closer to some of the people I love and care for in Poland, like my mom. It would be so awesome to have coffee with her every morning in person instead of Skype. You love shoes, dare we ask how many pairs you own? I think I was born in heels. People often ask me how I can walk in them. I am not very tall so I do like to add a few inches to my height. In Europe, females commonly wear high heels everywhere, even my grandmother. As far as how many, I would be afraid to count. 20

Saving the Slopes: Hickory Hills Ski Area Hickory Hills Ski Area has been saved thanks to a huge community effort. The newly renovated ski area is scheduled to be up and running for the winter 2018/2019 season. Many updates have been made, including a new ski lodge. In addition, four new downhill ski runs have been created. The terrain park, bunny hill and rail park have been moved to accommodate more features. The Nordic ski trails have been expanded to allow for beginner through advanced terrain. This project has truly been a collaboration, enlisting the help of the City of Traverse City, Preserve Hickory, the Joint Rec Authority, the Hickory Meadows Advisory Committee, and countless volunteers from a variety of user groups. Time to hit the slopes! www.preservehickory.com

The Good Bowl Eatery: Tony Vu, Soon Hagerty, Michael Evans, and staff

Pho a Good Cause Traverse City’s only Vietnamese restaurant, The Good Bowl Eatery, donated over $11,500 to charities since its doors opened this summer. Their unique mission-driven business model incorporates a charity component by donating one dollar per bowl of food to a local, national, or global non-profit that changes quarterly. After the restaurant’s first round, local non-profit Father Fred received a check for $6,289, national charity St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital received $2,781, and the global organization UNICEF received $2,521 to support the Syrian refugee crisis. “Our entire restaurant is built on three pillars: Cuisine, Community and Culture. Contributing to local, national and global charities is a strong part of who we are,” said Soon Hagerty, founder and co-owner. “We are so proud to be able to contribute to these great causes.” Congratulations to everyone involved and keep eating Pho to help others! www.goodbowleatery.com

BY AMANDA RENKIEWICZ

PETS THAT

PULL

Dog Sledding with Mike King Children may be on the alert for Rudolph and his reindeer friends pulling Santa’s sleigh, but they’re more likely to see Mike King and his beautiful Siberian Huskies around town! Twelve dogs make up the perfect team of Pets That Pull. Mike and wife Lee first decided to try their hand at sled dogs when a friend needed to re-home his husky. They resolved to raise it, and soon thought that it needed a puppy friend. Once the second dog arrived, Mike realized that adding a third dog would allow them to sled! The decision was the start of canine cheer. The sled team is led by Cookie and Jynks. Jynks is the Alpha dog, and instructs the others with his dominant personality. New to the group are two young dogs, Abbott and Costello, and a Border Collie named Maya helps herd them all. Although often confused for racing dogs, these purebred huskies are more approachable and less energetic, making them child friendly. Mike’s favorite local place to sled is the TART trail, where the dogs are kept in shape during the off season by pulling Mike on a cart with wheels. In the winter, these happy pups also demonstrate their adoration of children by waiting for them outside of the ski school, ready to be hugged and petted. Mike works at Shanty Creek Resorts in Bellaire, Michigan, teaching skiing and snowboarding. He offers dog sled rides on Saturday afternoons and during the holidays. The not to be missed sled rides are offered at the Schuss Nordic Center at Shanty Creek Resorts. The half-mile long adventure loops around the fairway. For a fun, unique and thrilling dog sledding experience, the rides are booked through the front desk in Schuss Village.

“Too much of anything is bad, but too much champagne is just right.” –F. Scott Fitzgerald

TWIST ON A CLASSIC:

Champagne Bar BY AMANDA RENKIEWICZ

A chilled glass of bubbly is a New Year’s Eve classic, but to truly impress your friends, have a champagne bar! Self-serve options allow guests to replenish their glasses at their leisure, while the hostess gets credit for a stunning display. Follow these easy steps to have this trendy presentation at your next holiday bash. Step 1: Bring on the Bubbly Don’t skimp on quantity, while you can sneak in less expensive champagne! From local sparkling wines done in the Methode Champenoise fashion to medium shelf French champagnes, anything will do. Throw in an Italian prosecco for a fun option! Step 2: Bring on the Booze Dust off your bourbon and more! Vodka, gin, St. Germaine, absinthe, cognac, whiskey and flavored liqueurs can all brighten a champagne cocktail. Step 3: Mix It Up Variety is the spice of life, and it’s certainly a thrill behind a champagne bar. Some exciting mixers include sugar cubes, bitters, juices and simple syrup. Add in herbs like rosemary for a colorful effect. For a touch of glamour, have edible gold flakes or candied rose petals.

Step 4: Gorgeous Glassware Champagne flutes are classic, but never fear an array of vintage glasses of different sizes. From your grandmother’s china cabinet to local stores, find barware that speaks to you and your taste. Step 5: Garnish Dress up those cocktails with fruit! Raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, iced grapes or cranberries, and lemon twists are just some options to decorate your drink. Go out of the box with kiwi or pineapple. A hint for unforgettable fun? Pre-soak some of the fruit in a favorite spirit like vodka. Step 6: Set Up and Pop An artsy display will be well-worth the effort once your guests arrive. Set up a table with buckets of ice to chill your champagne, and place the mixers, garnishes and glassware in front. Labels for specific items are a nice touch to add in some style and flaunt your fancy! A cocktail shaker, bar spoons and small napkins complete the display. With your champagne bar ready, ring in the New Year with panache and a toast!

Grand Traverse FAMILY HOLIDAY

Traditions Family, friends and traditions make this time of year special. Here are some local families celebrating the season in their own memorable ways:

“We love Christmas brunch at The Boathouse. Their Santa makes me believe again! He is incredible!” –Betsy, The Corbett Family

“Christmas Jammies” for all the cousins! They truly enjoy it and we all love seeing how much they grow from year to year. What’s better than lounging around in some cozy pj’s all day?” -Mandy, The Brown Family

“We cut down our own tree in this family, including a smaller kid’s tree, “Charlie Brown style”, that the kids decorate themselves…” –Brittany, The Luea Family

“One of our family traditions is all the boys (including grandpa) get matching pajamas that they wear Christmas Eve (prior to Santa coming) and Tristin will read a story.” -Sue, The Kessel Family

“There is a tree farm we visit every year with a little sign that says Christmas Trees. Vito, the owner, trims and shapes the trees all through the year so they are perfect looking. Plus, he’s hilarious!” –Jaclyn, The Clever Family

“Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army is an excellent way to be able to volunteer alongside your kids. We bundle up, head downtown with our Bluetooth speaker, and ring bells to our favorite Christmas Songs. The kids have a ball and I’m confident that we raise more money than if an adult was bell ringing themself. I encourage all families to spend two hours of your holiday season with a red apron on, and a bell in your hand.” –Tricia, The Adams Family

“Every Thanksgiving we cut down a Christmas tree at my in-laws Christmas tree farm.” -Kristin, The Lutz Family

“We spend a relaxing Christmas day in our family Christmas jammies opening gifts, spending time with family and watching Christmas movies." –Laurel, The Leithauser Family

“This is a photo of the past four years of visiting Santa at the resort with our good friends and our kids! We have taken a photo in front of the big Christmas tree each year and it’s so fun to see how both the kids AND our families have grown!” –Kaley, The McMarlin Family

ASK

ANGELA BY ANGELA GOODALL

STAIRWAY STYLE

As an Interior Designer, one of the biggest challenges I encounter is when I am asked to help design a client’s stairway. Often this element is one of the first structural components you see when entering through the front door, so it sets a little of the stage for the home’s overall feel. If it is a multi-level structure, it may often travel up, down and up, and down. It may be winding with a landing or just a straight run. Some of my clients opt for a simple approach with a wood capped ½ wall that would be either drywalled or clad with a wood treatment like the ever-popular shiplap. Others prefer a more traditional approach consisting of wood or metal (or combination) spindles with a typical wood newel and handrail. As with anything home design, new products and approaches have entered the scene. Metal, glass and free floating treads have all been common requests in the last few years. Do tubular black iron for the handrails, cable or glass for the barrier and floating planks of wood for treads sound familiar? So, where’s the challenge? Sounds fun, right? Well, the State of Michigan has fairly strict codes that must be enforced when it comes to stair systems. No opening can be larger than what a 4” diameter ball can fit through. The handrails need to meet graspable requirements and be continuous the entire run of the stairway. Treads and Risers have a minimum and maximum that must fit into the constraints of the rise and run. Good thing I am a math major by education! Don’t let the sound of this scare away you from designing the stairway of your dreams. It could be one of the most important aspects of your home’s design and I am always up for the challenge!

Grand Lake House Away from the hustle and bustle of the big city,

tucked within a forest of trees in Acme Township, is located this stunning Cape Cod inspired home. There is a special quietness as you drive down the treecovered driveway surrounded by nature. Through the front door is a view of the shifting blue waters of East Bay. One cannot help but feel at peace as they arrive at this quintessential Northern Michigan lake home. 53

The moment the front door is opened,

special architectural features are apparent throughout. Oversized windows guarantee guests will not miss one second of the breathtaking view of East Bay. White oak floors, large columns, custom paint colors and handselected furnishings contribute to the stylized interior. There is even a secret door hidden within the walls!

The home is large scale

yet has a warm, nautical feel. Upon entering, it has a grand feeling with high beaded barrel ceilings and opposing staircases decorated with patterned stair runners. The main living room features custom yellow painted walls and sophisticated blue accent dĂŠcor. Designed with both water and sky in mind, the highlight of the room is its large floor to ceiling windows that allow you to enjoy the vast view.

“As you are drawn in by the grandness

and the view in front of you, you are then truly comforted by the interiors, making you want to snuggle in on the sofa, have a glass of wine on the screened in porch, or just sit at the kitchen island with a cup of coffee,” explained the home’s interior designer Michele Cerny of Lakeview Interior Design. “It truly has the feeling of a resort lake home, a place to relax and unwind...just take a breath and enjoy.” The home was originally built in 1995 by Burkholder Construction with Louis Des Rosiers as the architect. Its most recent renovation, completed in June 2018 by Burkholder, gave this already beautiful space a freshening up. All hands were on deck for the construction job, which included the addition of a library and a spacious master closet. A redesign of the kitchen, master bath, guest bedrooms and bathrooms was also central to the project. “I was going for the “wow” lake home factor,” explains interior designer Cerny. “With all the windows drawing you to the outside, I wanted my clients to feel like the colors, textures and features around them inside had the same beauty that’s matched outside.” Cerny was able to accomplish her ultimate goal. Throughout the space there are custom fabrics and soft finishes, making it truly feel custom built. 56

One of the most impressive rooms

in the home is the library, which features a lit coffered ceiling with stunning trim work by the talented craftsmen at Inception Woodworks and Burkholder Construction. The fireplace stands grandly as the central focus of the room, giving it a priceless, intimate, and inviting atmosphere. There are two massive pocket doors entering the office space that offer a secluded getaway when needed. An inviting window seat opens up the room, creating a perfect space to cozy up with a good book during a winter blizzard. A spacious master closet added square footage and a taste of ultimate luxury. Special attention was paid to every last detail including a marble topped island, crisp white cabinets designed for specific items, and accent lighting throughout. Directly next door is the master bathroom, complete with vanities, an inviting soaking tub, glamorous mirrors, and a white marble mosaic backsplash that pairs beautifully with an Imperial Azul granite countertop. The Master bedroom itself is impressive with massive windows facing the peaceful blue water.

The kitchen is one of the central gathering areas and was completely redone with custom designed cabinets by Inception Woodworks. To accommodate the owner’s grown family and multiple visitors, the designer added seating around the island. Other amenities include a Sub Zero paneled fridge, Wolf cooktop and warming drawer, Bosch paneled dishwasher, a minibar and a Kitchenaid paneled trash compactor. An artistic tile backsplash over the range in the kitchen is reminiscent of a Celtic knot, a nod to the owner’s Irish heritage. The Irish themed personalization is hidden throughout the home in selected fabrics and even a Celtic knot pattern on the back plate of a light fixture.

One of the favorite gathering places for the owner’s multiple guests is the screened in porch. It offers a crisp

breeze that is enjoyable on hot summer nights. The space is perfect for quiet reading by the fireplace or groups of friends laughing as they enjoy a glass of wine. Looking up, the beaded ceiling is a beautiful light blue paint color named “Silver Mist”, another soft touch that contributes to the “lake home feel”. What is a “lake home” without a beach? Well, the direct bay frontage on the property has soft sand and lends itself to fun activities on the bay like water skiing, tubing and paddleboarding. The winter months are equally entertaining with snowshoeing and a close proximity to downhill ski slopes. The owners, who currently live downstate, have enjoyed this beautiful lake home for years and were fortunate enough to spend many summers here with their family and friends. With the most recent renovation and retirement on the horizon, they are in the process of making this fabulous location their permanent address. HOLIDAY 2018 | BAYLIFE MAGAZINE

NORTHERN ENCOUNTERS

CAPTURED BY TODD AND BRAD REED PHOTOGRAPHY

Big Star by Brad Reed Upon discovering that even in snowshoes, I was unable to walk over the five-foot snow drifts on the utility road to Big Sable Point Lighthouse, I had to figure out another way to get there. After using some good risk assessment, I decided my best course of action was to walk on the ice a few hundred yards off shore. After almost a mile and a half of treacherous walking and crawling, I made it to the lighthouse. Exhausted and hot, I made this image in seven degree weather, made chillier by 20 mile-per-hour winds. It was so worth the journey. D7000, F22 at 1/60, ISO 100, 10-20mm lens at 10mm toddandbradreed.com
