FROM THE
editor
CREATE A LIFE that feels good on the inside... NOT ONE THAT JUST LOOKS good on the outside.
Editor sandwich: Style Editors and Advisory Board Members Extraordinaire Kristy Kurjan left and right Greta Myers.
O
F COURSE, MY FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS IS TO WISH YOU AN ADVENTUROUS HAPPY NEW YEAR, WITH ALL THE IDYLLIC POSSIBILITIES THAT A FRESH START POSES. GO OUT, CONQUER, DO WHAT YOUR LITTLE HEART DESIRES AND MORE.
Now, I’m a very positive person. Despite this, the New Year looks pretty much the same out my window as it has for the last six weeks. I’m trying to see beyond it, but I do have to honestly admit, as I write this and the high temperature to look forward to on Monday is a frigid 1 degree, it’s bloody hard when you’re not a Northern Michigan native to embrace it! I am ever so slightly wondering what the allure of living this BAYLIFE is all about (for the next few months anyway). We haven’t seen the ground since midNovember. (Yes, I do recall that Nov/Dec’s cover said, “Let it Snow!” It seemed such a cute idea in October!)
With a new year comes new beginnings and change! We are proud to introduce Rebecca Eyke. Moving onto Bigger and Brighter things Rebecca is the former esteemed Editor of Michigan HOMES and is joining the BayLife Team as a contributor and consultant. Rebecca's 5 years of leadership was instrumental in transcending a mere resource guide to a statewide magazine and we are thrilled to welcome her on board our beloved publication.

The good part in all this is we did still manage to find many wonderful people who are indeed living this BAYLIFE Dream year-round and appreciate all the good along with what Mother Nature has us endure. First of all, there’s the spectacular cover shot by photographer Ken Scott, who is already overjoyed at the offerings this Winter is providing to capture pure perfection through his lens—where else would he find such natural splendor and inspiration? Then there are the Nelsons in Frankfort who run the Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm. The fur of an Alpaca was named “The Fiber of the Gods” by the Incas and reserved only for royalty to wear! Thankfully, those days are long gone, and the unmeasured warmth of the fleece from these snuggly and adorable animals may just make this winter a bit more bearable, not to mention a whole lot less itchy and hypoallergenic, too!
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH
Then we met Stephanie Miller and her team. She has tolerated the cold since she was a youngster gracefully skating on the shimmering ice. Then she became a coach. She is using her seamstress talents to make up-cycled gloves with love. She spreads warmth and smiles wherever she goes, inside and out! Date night gives you inspiration for a nostalgic and romantic dinner on the slopes. Why not reignite the flame of passion with your significant other in honor of Valentine’s Day, or just go and have a nice quiet dinner at The Lakeview Restaurant? They do say perception is reality! So the experience you encounter is up to you. But it’s a long winter, so ignite it! Why not! And then we are invited inside the Cerny family home on Long Lake, which of course on a sunny summer day is an easy paradise. If it wasn’t for winter and family flying south, they wouldn’t have had a place to stay while their house was being built! Not wasting any season, they make an ice rink in winter, cook pizza on their Big Green Egg and keep swimsuits dripping wet in the snow surrounded Hot Tub. After a peek inside, you will sign up for a vacation inside their Snore Shack. (Don’t worry, we’ll explain.) So all in all, it’s still a pretty awesome place to live. Downtown is still vibrant. Restaurant week is coming. There are winter festivals galore and ski resorts in every direction. It’s still very good to live the BAYLIFE. Just Bundle Up!

secret recipe: THE WOMP MAC-N-CHEESE COOK-OFF CHEESIEST WINNER Ingredients 1/2 lb. uncooked elbow macaroni 2 cups grated raclette cheese from Leelanau Cheese 1/2 cup grated blue cheddar from Boss Mouse Cheese 1 1/2 cups whole milk (3 cups to make vegetarian version like we served at the Mac-n-Cheese cook off) 1 1/2 cups chicken stock (the stock makes the cheese sauce nice and savory, and is my preference) 2 tablespoons cornstarch Butter 1 clove garlic cut in half 1/2 cup bread crumbs Salt To Make

Put macaroni into a pan and just cover with water, add a pinch of salt. Bring pot to a boil. As soon as it boils turn heat down to medium high. Cook until the water is just about completely gone. I know this goes against conventional wisdom when it comes to cooking pasta, but by doing it this way you will be creating a lot of starch that will help make the sauce very silky and creamy. The pasta should be just cooked when the water is gone. Drain into a colander, but do not wash. You don't want to rinse away all that starch. While macaroni is cooking, put the milk and chicken stock into a pot and heat over medium heat. Combine both cheeses in a bowl and toss it with the cornstarch. As soon as the milk almost simmers, turn heat down a bit, and add cheese, and whisk until cheese has completely melted into the milk. Let cook for a couple minutes to allow the sauce to thicken. It is important that the sauce does not boil as this will cause it to separate. Salt the sauce to taste. Butter a 2 quart casserole dish on all sides and the bottom, then rub the garlic clove on all sides and on the bottom. Add the macaroni to the sauce and mix well. Pour the macaroni and sauce into the casserole dish, sprinkle bread crumbs on top and bake in a 375 degree oven until crust is golden brown.

Winter Warming Reds Winter is in full gear in Northern Michigan, bringing loads of fluffy snow and along with it some chilly temps. This weather makes for perfect red wine drinking—wines that are fuller bodied, a bit higher in tannins, and that simply warm you up from the inside out. In Northern Michigan, there are some great red varietals as well as hybrids grown and produced. Some of the more notable grapes are Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Gamay and Pinot Noir. While our growing region can make it difficult to mature these grapes to reach their full potential, our local vintners have done a great job in mastering their vineyard placement and viticulture techniques to create some superb wines. One of my favorites is the SIGNATURE RED FROM BRYS ESTATES. Grown 100 percent in their vineyards on Old Mission Peninsula, this wine is made from a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Pinot Noir, creating a fullbodied red with layers of vanilla, red berries and hints of chocolate. Aged for 14 months in French barrels, the Signature Red is smooth and round with soft tannins making it perfect to pair up with red meats, lamb and other wild game. This is a must-try wine and perfect gift for a Valentine’s Day treat. Cheers, Darric 424 West Front Street, Traverse City www.folgarellis.net • 231.941.7651 JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH

If it’s important to YOU, you will FIND A WAY. If not, you’ll find an excuse.
Sparkling Outlook It’s an Up North Winter! Freezing temps? Check. Gray skies? Check. Crabby mood? Check again. But not for long! It may be gloomy outside, but your outlook doesn’t have to be. Here are some basic rules to live by. INTERIZE YOUR OUR WINTERIZE WORKOUT: Did you know 30 percent of people don’t exercise in winter? Exercise alone can boost your mood. Why not engage in outdoor winter sports like skiing, skating and snowshoeing. Added Bonus: Your body works harder to keep warm, burning more calories. EAT BETTER – FEEL BETTER: Fatty, sugary comfort foods and highly refined carbs wreak havoc on your blood sugar levels, making you feel cranky. Choose healthy. You’ll be skinnier and feel better on the inside, too. GET YOUR GROUP ON: Bears hibernate, but humans aren’t made to. In fact, socializing is a powerful way to boost your mood. Make lunch dates, host dinner parties and spend time with friends old and new. RELISH WINTER’S PLEASURES: Hot Toddies! Blazing Fires, Ski Resorts, and Warm Woolen Mittens! Savor the most amazing things about this season. It can make you more content, enjoying the Winter rather than dreading it.
20
ANTICIPATE A NTICIPATE A GREAT ESCAPE: Planning a trip—or even just thinking about one in the future—can make you happier. It gives you something to look forward to. If you can spare the time and cash for a getaway, book one ASAP. DRESS FOR THE WEATHER: EATHER: Staying warm is a surprising secret to feeling merry. So bundle up; don’t leave home without your scarf, gloves and hat. SEE THE LIGHT: Your body produces vitamin D, which has been shown to help regulate mood. Sunlight also increases levels of serotonin, so be sure to head outside whenever you do spot some rays. You’ll find yourself smiling.
ULTIMATE GIRLS’ DAY Any event that includes girlfriends and wine is always a winner, and a local favorite is the Women's Winter Tour along the Leelanau Trail to celebrate Women, Wine and Chocolate! The 16th annual one will be held Sunday, February 2nd. Ski or snowshoe (we have to work off the chocolate) along the Leelanau Trail en route to Black Star Farms while enjoying local foods, wine and chocolate along the way! How will she accomplish this goal? By embracing beautiful yet timeless pieces that will last for years.
“I would like to add more classic pieces to my wardrobe. My natural instinct is to buy less expensive items that are more trendy. That way I don's have a lot of money invested if they aren't still on trend the following season. I'd like to start spending more on quality pieces that will be timeless that I can wear from year to year.”

Beautiful Bride The temperatures may be dropping and the landscape covered in snow but for many brides-to-be in Northern Michigan, wedding planning is in full swing. So as your special day is getting closer, there are a few things you can do to enjoy every second and make it truly memorable. Wedding planning can be stressful, no matter what the size of your wedding. As the bride, you are the center of attention and you need to make sure you take time to pamper yourself in order to feel beautiful, inside and out. Getting a massage is a wonderful and deeply relaxing ritual that will not only melt away all the physical tension that you hold inside, but it will also leave you with a sense of calm and well being. Many spas offer massage packages, and setting up a series of appointments will ensure that you pencil in “me time in your busy schedule.

Your body is not the only thing that requires preparation, your skin also needs a plan! Schedule an appointment with a skin care specialist a few months before the wedding to discuss which treatments and skin care routine will best enhance your natural beauty. As skin can take a while to fully respond to and look its best after treatments, it is crucial to start the plan early. Making sure you are using the appropriate products for your skin at home is also very important and the specialist can give you recommendations on which products are best for your skin.
You want to look your best, today more than ever. Meet with a hair stylist and makeup artist several weeks before the wedding day to try out the hairdo and look you want, it will make your wedding day appointment seem like a breeze. Going to a salon that offers all amenities is much easier than going to multiple locations and will save you precious time. Don’t forget to get your nails done – you will look polished and feel pretty, even if no one can see your toes underneath that big dress! It’s now time for the big day and all eyes are on you, the bride -- from your entrance walking down the aisle to the moment you leave the party. You will have memories that will last a lifetime, a beautiful wedding story to tell your children and grandchildren one day, photographs to remember it all, a visual recollection that will show just how happy and beautiful you looked on your wedding day.

High CLASSICALLY TRAINED EXECUTIVE CHEF ANDREW REH.
AS VALENTINE’S DAY APPROACHES and we are in the throngs of a wicked winter with probably record amounts of early snow that elevate the phase Cabin Fever to a whole new high, nothing could be more coveted than a date night AWAY from home. Quick, ditch the kids at grandma’s and run for the hills. What better place to rekindle the flame of romance than on the slopes. Locally, you can channel your inner snow bunny persona near and far, as we are so lucky to have many fabulous resorts to choose from, but we chose Shanty Creek in Bellaire for a few reasons. (Did you know it was originally conceived by Roy Deskin, the son of a coal miner, to be a private club?) In 2007, Shanty Creek underwent a $10 million renovation. If you haven’t visited since then, you’ll be pleasantly wowed! And just last year, Shanty Creek celebrated its 50th anniversary, partnering up in a fun way with local brewery Shorts to create a microbrew Black Diamond lager only available at the resort. (That alone is worth a visit for beer lovers.) Another draw is their talented and highly distinguished classically trained Executive Chef Andrew Reh, whom you may have encountered at the March of Dimes Signature Chef event. You may have eaten some of his WOMP award-winning Mac and Cheese. Or if you ever dined at the White House a few years back (who hasn’t, right?), he cooked there, too! He has served at

In a foodie town of chef geniuses, isn’t it time you savored his fare for a much needed Winter Date Night. Picture this: So after a marvelous day descending snow-covered slopes, there is nothing more glorious than the warmth and presence of a roaring fireplace and breathtaking majestic views atop Summit Mountain of Lake Bellaire by sunset (and without kids). Welcome to the Lake View Restaurant. An elegant evening awaits you. The service is impeccable (they won a local Best Restaurant Staff award). To begin your experience, they may recommend a custom martini like the Lakeview Sunset: vodka, Malibu Rum, orange juice, pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine. Yes, please, I’ll have two! Or one of the Winter Warm Ups on the drink menu like the Chata Irish Coffee: RumChata, Baileys, Irish whiskey and coffee topped with whipped cream. Yum! The restaurant is well known for its delicious Prime Rib, but that’s deceiving as it’s a popular carved buffet item and not available daily. The actual menu lends itself to an eclectic palate and offers small plate flights for much more decadent dining. (Warning: Don’t read the next paragraph hungry.) Some of your

flight choices include Steamed Blue Mussels, simmered in fresh lemon and white wine with fine herbs and butter. Smoked Whitefish Gratin, Charlevoix’s Cross Fisheries’ whitefish folded into béchamel and broiled with Gruyère cheese. Thai Spare Rib, slow-roasted and grilled with Asian chile and garlic on a bed of fresh Kimchi salad. (Hungry yet?) Scallops & Pork Belly, lemongrass and five-spice marinated pork belly, slowly cooked with seared scallops over greens. Or how about a Veal Ravioli, ground veal, fresh basil and onion wrapped in egg pasta and fried with black bean purée, cilantro pesto and succotash. (Is your mouth watering yet? Do you need a tissue?) If small plates are not your forte and you are looking for a traditional elegant entrée, you won’t be disappointed. Choices here are many like Roasted Duck Pan, roasted duck breast served over sesame spaetzle and cabbage with teriyaki sauce. Pretzel Crusted Walleye, served with creamy piccata sauce and Parmesan risotto. A Sirloin, served with Maytag blue cheese sauce and Yukon Gold mashed potatoes, to name just a few. Decadent desserts are the house specialty and are all made in-house, so make sure you save room. (There is a reason we call it winter weight, but hey, you can work it off on the slopes tomorrow.) The perfect ending and cherry on top includes an

array of smooth and rich after-dinner drinks. Of course, no extra calories count here, as every drink contains cream or ice cream. Remember, it’s OK. Repeat after me, “Winter Weight.” Not only will you have dined divinely, but you’ll be enthralled in each other’s company as you see the glimmer in each other’s eyes flickering wildly by the glow of the fire. (Well, I can’t really promise that. The great food and service? Yes, that’s a promise.) Your date night doesn’t even have to end early. No more looking at the watch. The restaurant is open on weekends until 12 a.m., and you can even lovingly linger in the lounge until 1 a.m.! It’ll be just like when you were dating. Staying out late and party, party, party! But don’t forget you do have to go home and pick up the kids eventually. If an all-night date night isn’t in the cards, other ways you can experience the Lake View is take the whole family to one of their Scrumptious Brunches or the Pizza & a Pitcher on Thursday nights in February for $20.

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH
IN THE MIDST OF THE BITTER COLD NORTHERN MICHIGAN WINTER THAT HAS UNCEREMONIOUSLY BEEN THRUST UPON US, AS YOU BUNDLE UP AGAIN AND AGAIN, CONSIDER THIS: Did you know that Alpaca Fiber is seven times warmer than wool, softer than cashmere, doesn’t itch, insulates, is hypoallergenic, wicks away body moisture and is actually the most luxurious fiber known to man! EVEN DESIGNER RALPH LAUREN IS GETTING IN ON THE ALPACA ACTION! Did you also know that nestled in the little town of Frankfort sits the 145-acre, nationally award-winning Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm and Boutique. It’s lovingly run by the Nelson family and contains fields full of the adorable, snuggly-faced alpacas just waiting to hum for you! Yes, that’s right, they hum! Contrary to popular belief, they don’t spit—that’s their cousin the llama, giving the poor alpaca the bad rap! Alpacas and llamas are also relatives of the camel. This Alpaca-clad family—Chris, Dave and kids Andrea, Stephan and Michael—started this love of animals quite naturally. Dave Nelson grew up to become a veterinarian, and in 1991 built the Platte Lake Veterinary Clinic in the little town of Honor. For many years, of course, Chris was a busy mom raising their three children, but once they started growing up, she got a little empty nest syndrome. They were supposed to just go and look at one alpaca as a little idea; a friend who was a financial advisor suggested it was a great business to get into since you can take a tax deduction of up to $250,000 for purchasing alpacas. What Chris didn’t bargain for was that once she saw them, she literally fell in love. “Caution, they will steal your heart,” says Chris who now can boast the elite title of 2013 Small Breeder of the Year! So The Crystal Lake Alpaca Farm was established in 2001 with a herd of six alpacas, and this has grown to a herd of more than 40 with many achieving national recognition for the quality of their fleece. The farm’s number one goal is to raise healthy alpacas with the most elite, fine and dense fleece possible.

“They are just simply enchanting,” Alpacas originated in South America around 6,000 years ago, and the Incas bred them, naming their fleece “the Fiber of the Gods” reserved only for royalty to wear. Present-day, they were the fastest growing livestock in the U.S. until the government closed the border in 1998. They are raised today for their coveted prized fleece, which is sheared once a year. “They are just simply enchanting,” explains Chris. On the day we went to visit, to become Alpaca Enlightened, the first animals we actually were introduced to were the huge watchdogs, the Great Pyrenees mountain dogs Naomi and Banner. It’s their sole job to guard the herd, and they look upon the alpacas as theirs.
DAUGHTER ANDREA WITH SPARTY In the field of all females (males and females are kept separate), most of them are pregnant so they can have spring babies, which around here are major superstars. Every baby bred on the Nelson Farm has been a champion. Surprisingly, they are pretty low-maintenance animals, easy take care of (as farm animals go, I mean). They actually use a litter box! They have padded feet and walk gently on pastures, and they only have top teeth so they mow the grass, not tear it out. As Chris says, they are a prescription to a healthier and less stressful lifestyle because they are so easy to handle and manage.

THEY SELL THEIR VERY OWN, LOCALLY SPUN YARN FROM THEIR ANIMALS’ FLEECE.
HER SON BUILT HER A CABIN-STYLE BOUTIQUE BY REFURBISHING ONE OF THE BARNS WITH LUMBER FROM THEIR OWN WOODS.
Chris has thoroughly embraced the Alpaca Lifestyle. She has a sign hanging that says, “Whoever said that diamonds were a girl’s best friend must not have owned an alpaca!” Chris took this one step further, seeing the need Up North for an outlet to sell those snuggly wares originating from the alpaca fleece. Her son built her a cabin-style boutique by refurbishing one of the barns with lumber from their very own woods. The boutique is filled with an array of alpaca articles to keep you hot, toasty and stylish from your head to your toes and everything in-between all winter long. A lot of the items are imported from Peru, but they do sell their very own, locally spun yarn from their animals’ fleece. Unfortunately, timing is everything. Here we are introducing you to a local family and just as we go to print, we find out the store will close for a winter break. But no worries, there is this magic thing called the Internet. I’m sure you have heard of it. You can still support local and buy all the same goodies from their online store that Chris’s daughter Andrea oversees: CrystalLakeAlpacaBoutique.com. When it’s time for them to open again, take a visit to the farm. We guarantee you’ll say “aah” … and fall in love with alpacas too. 4907 River Road, Frankfort, MI 49635 231.882.5024 www.crystallakealpacafarm.com

Founded fifty five years ago by locals it was known as The Buck Hills Ski Area, with two rope tows and a small warming hut. In 1960 it was purchased by a group and re named "Crystal Mountain". In 1966, three investors took over headed by George Petritz, a local businessman. George took on sole ownership of Crystal Mountain in 1981. The resort still remains family owned and is ran by George’s daughter and son in law Chris and Jim Macinnes.

Winter Golf: Make a golf course by packing down a section of snow every few feet. Bury tin cans halfway down in the snow to create holes, and mark them with mini flagsticks.
Build a Fort: Use sand buckets, loaf pans and cut-up empty milk cartons to make a cool snow castle.

THE ICE QUEEN What happens when local skating team the Traverse City Figure Skating Club needs to keep their mega-talented but dainty hands warm while gracefully gliding along the freezing ice? Well, like a scene out of the new Disney movie Frozen crossed with a little old-school Cinderella, their part-Fairy Godmother, part-skating coach (who just happens to have a sewing background of making Olympic skating costumes) whips out her magic wand in the form of a sewing machine and whips up some stylish, warm and uber-groovy gloves, of course! HER NAME IS STEPHANIE MILLER, a former synchronized skater. What she created along with her Hobo helpers is a new, happening little thing in the local school community named Hobowear. We say school community because a huge part of what they have been doing is making gloves in school colors to sell in the form of fundraisers with team colors, but their eventual goals are far more elaborate! Stephanie’s bucket list includes having the entire winter Olympic Village all wearing Hobowear gloves, custom made in every country’s colors! Now with the recent stories that the USA team gloves were actually made in China, I think that actually has a lot of merit! The other tad more simple

goal is that she and fellow Hobo-ers Heidi Masse and Mary Cutter would love to be able to quit their day jobs as they dream of doing this fulltime! With humble beginnings as all Cinderella stories must start, the company’s sassy headquarters and where all the Hobo Hullabaloo happens is in Stephanie’s basement. The company sign proudly hangs above the now three professional sewing machines. Heidi Masse and Mary Cutter, Hobo sewers extraordinaire, are also part of the Frozen Frosty world of Ice Queen Skating. Mary’s daughter Grace is 13 years old and has been skating for six years, and Heidi has been a personal skating coach for 11 years. So all have this common woolen thread, you could say, and live in a little place in hobo heaven called Hobowearville. But where do they get those threads to make the gloves? Well, the bulk of the wool used is found downstate, surprisingly. Stephanie has a long and legendary skating history, and she is also a part of the Detroit Skating Club. She picks up wool while she is down there at the Salvation Army; ironically, as cold as it is here, we don’t have a huge influx of wool! Who knew?
Heidi Masse, Stephanie Miller and Mary Cutter in their HobowearVille world. But it’s not all just hands-down success! The little Hobowear has already grown from mere glorious gloves, and boasts new products that are all abuzz and ontrend right now, including reversible boot topper gloves, infinity scarves, even iPad and Kindle gloves! Happy hands, feet and everything else are all around with these colorful wonders. With as long as winter hangs around these days, maybe the next thing they come up with will be a woolen bikini for wearing on the ice, of course!

Indoor Winter SURVIVAL 101:
Add Some coLoR to yoUR LIfe! As I write, we are in the 3rd week of December and have pretty much had snow since before Thanksgiving. I wasn’t sure if I was going to take a spring vacation this year, but it may be a good idea seeming as winter may be longer than we have had in a while.
As a designer, I am well versed in the way color and a well designed space can make all the difference. This past year, gray was a very popular color and white kitchens still are the most popular. Although very beautiful, I always try to advise my year round clients that January and February can make the most positive of us want to head south for some sunshine. So with that in mind, let’s introduce shades of colors that will warm up the coolest of palettes and make us feel cozy when the snow and wind are blowing outside.

I have convinced my husband that sometimes two of one thing can be good (this is besides handbags or shoes, because in that case two is not enough). I have accent and décor pieces that are specific to winter vs. summer. This can be the simplest of introductions, a snuggly throw on the sofa, some great accent pillows or accessory pieces on a table. Switch up your lamp shade, buy a winter area rug and when summer comes and the other one is brought back out, it can feel like a new room. So although the sun may not shine for many days at a time,
adding a decorative element the color of sunshine may be just what you need to be reminded that not too long from now we will be back outside. Or buy something blue to remind you of our beautiful water and that the boating days will be back soon. Enjoy all of the seasons that Northern Michigan has to offer and make it fun to create a different space with small touches to celebrate each of them!

you can come Growing up in Northern Michigan, the journey called life seems to be a familiar one. You have a cherished adolescence, not always fully appreciated when you were a teenager, and you long to spread your wings and carve out your path in the big wide world. Eventually, you settle down with the love of your life and are instinctively compelled to return to the little town that captivated your childhood—the one by the sparkling shores on the pristine bay. You want to give your children the same gift of experiencing the best place for a kid to grow up on the entire earth. (Shh, don’t tell a soul. It’s our secret.)

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2014 | BAY LIFE NORTH
MICHELE’S ENTIRE VISION WAS TO BRING THE OUTDOORS IN. This awakening is what happened to Traverse City Native Tim Cerny and his wife Michele, along with their three handsome boys, Jacob (15), Joel (13) and Kale (9). They moved back here from Toronto, into their lake cottage where they had spent treasured family summers swimming, sunning and enjoying sunsets and s’mores. They quickly discovered that the summer serenity house wasn’t so harmonious year-round for a family of five. After a year of squeezing into extremely tight spaces, they realized the house they now called home was only perfect in summer (because you’re never in it). A family decision was made; they would build their “Forever Family Home” in the very same spot on the beloved lake that held their hearts. All it would take was a little time, planning, patience and camping out at Grandma and Grandpa’s place for 11 months. Luckily, Tim’s parents migrate south for winter, so that made it a little easier. The other lucky thing was they picked MIKE COLLINGS and his amazing team at MAC CUSTOM HOMES to meticulously build their Dream Lake House. The MAC experience was a wonderful one and Michele had so much fun designing rooms, finding a flair for colors, accessories, lighting and finishing touches, that she has found a new passion—interior designing to help other couples fulfill their lake house dream designs.
Michele’s entire vision was to bring the outdoors in, and the knack and ease of the decorating bug that bit her is evident all around the home as she lovingly gives us the grand tour. Floating from room to
room, it’s obvious that she is still giddy with a subdued excitement that was so refreshing, sharing that she and Tim took a quiet moment together, taking it all in, finally, after completion. They stared wide-eyed with a jaw-dropping realization of disbelief, feeling so very blessed that this was indeed their family’s new home.

THE COMPASS ROSETTE POINTS TRUE NORTH.
To navigate your path as you enter, a beautifully inlaid and gilded wooden compass rose graces the floor beneath you, pointing to the exact true north. Flaming red birch, the shimmering wood that is indigenous of this area, covers the floor throughout, gently guiding your way and opening up to the stunning view of the lake. You are thrust into an illumination of colors that shine and gleam like a nautical rainbow, lake shore and crystalline water iridescent; there are dazzling blues that gently migrate into aquatic gleaming turquoise’s and beyond. The house exudes a classic cottage feel with an elegant twist of 10-feet high ceilings that are beautifully impressive and simplistically ornate with white molding everywhere you look. Michele oozes compliments on the Mac Trim guys, and she hosted beer Fridays to keep up morale! The trim is like no other, Mike had three boxes of pieces of wood to pick from allowing them to custom design the Cerny Lake House Trim from scratch.
The home is bright, airy and welcoming. As Michele says, “It’s formal but cozy.” It’s perfectly laid out for a family of five or to accommodate an overflowing house full of extended family and friends (which happens a lot around here). As your gaze turns to the kitchen, the massive butcher block island gives it an organic feel, infusing more shades of nature. The kitchen is Fabulous and Functional. Michele jokes, “With three boys, I spend more time in the kitchen than I do in bed.” The Cernys also love hosting parties, cooking on their Big Green Egg outside and utilizing the sink window in and out for fast food flow. A mini breakfast/coffee bar is cleverly hidden behind folding doors; when these are closed, the room morphs back into the sleek and clutter-free kitchen. The marble counters echo the calming aquatic colors and weren’t easy to find, but Lis at Stratus Marble & Granite helped Michele score the unique seafoam hue.
Tim’s brother Tyler owns local company Strata Design which created the custom kitchen cabinets and many of the built-ins. 56

“With 3 kids I spend more time in the kitchen than I do in bed.”
If ever there was a laundry room that would make you drool, this is it! It’s big and breezy, with room to swing and fold. The
walls are covered in stunning wallpaper. It’s in a shade of blue, of course, and water-inspired—aptly picked, since the water flows here a lot! Michele has even trained the boys with their own clean/dirty baskets. Across the room is the mud room nook just for the wet winter skiwear, and a nifty wire shelf just for drying. The garage also houses heated closets for all the boys’ sports stuff—football, hockey and basketball.

DOWNSTAIRS IS MICHELE’S FAVORITE BATHROOM
THE PEBBLE FLOOR EVEN CONTAINS TREASURED PETOSKEY STONES
ABOVE: ALL THE BOYS BEDROOMS HAVE A VIEW EXCEPT ONE, HE GOT A LOFT INSTEAD. BELOW LEFT: THE BOY’S BATHROOM SCREAMS “LAKE INSPIRED.” The tour guides us to the master bedroom on the first floor, which is essential for a “Forever Home” that realizes age will eventually become a factor! The master bath is a tranquility spa, where Michele walks in and says “aah.” It is decorated in delicate whites and grays, complete with heated floors and a tile that emulates weathered wood plank. Michele loved the tile floor so much that she used it all the way up in the shower, making it feel like a beach shower even on the coldest and snowiest of days. The “Boys’ Zone” is upstairs where all the bedrooms but one have a lake view. A compensation was made for the son whose bedroom doesn’t have a lake view—he got an additional little loft where he can practice his guitar! Pretty good trade, I’d say.

MOOMERS – BOONES DECK – SOUTH ISLAND ARE CHERISHED WORDS INLAID IN THE DOORS GLASS
THE SNORE SHACK! NAUTICAL MAPS LINE THE WALLS AS WALLPAPER
While upstairs offers the formal lake house, downstairs most definitely echoes the past life of the little homey cottage they fell in love with back in 2007. What they tore down is recreated with all the wished for creature comforts. It has a cozy bar with a mariners lacquer top, complete with a wine cellar. The walls are all wooden pine for a lodge feeling and the floors are a darker color, reminiscent of their dock. Gracing the room is a table that has also found its forever resting place; it has travelled place to place with the couple since they first married. Michele’s favorite bathroom is here, too—the place you head to after a day on the lake or a snow day in the hot tub. The pebble floor even contains treasured Petoskey Stones and houses a drain to drip-dry the wetsuits hanging above. The door itself is a significant journey, inlaid in the frosted glass are all Cerny Summer-inspired, important words that conjure cherished memories gone by and more to come, words like “Moomers - Boones Deck – South Island (where Tim’s grandparents ashes are lovingly laid) Sunset Cruise – Cousins” to name a few. Last but not least on this Cerny Compound of creating lasting memories for family and friends is of course the Snore Shack. It was also torn down, this little boat garage that used to be a guest haven. And here in the basement is the new-and-improved version where the original sign remains, hung over the door. You’ll find comfy bunk beds with room to roam. To remind you that you’re by the water, nautical maps line the walls as wallpaper; these maps are from places guests know and love, so it always feels like home.
THE BAR BOASTS A MARINER’S LACQUER TOP, COMPLETE WITH A WINE CELLAR
And that’s exactly what it feels like for the Cerny Family, Home at Last in their Forever Home. And as Michele puts it so wonderfully, “We are just so grateful to be in this home and understand how lucky and blessed we are to be able to fulfill our goals and our dream of being back in Traverse City on our beloved Long Lake.”
Thank you for allowing us a little peek inside. We were truly inspired by your newfound love of design, but most especially by your love of family.

Perry Hannah RETIREMENT HOME ON SIXTH STREET This magnificent mansion was built as the retirement home for Mr. and Mrs. Perry Hannah, and designed by Grand Rapids Architect, W.G. Robinson. Construction was begun in 1891 on approximately 200 feet of frontage on Sixth Street at the corner of Pine Street and featured a Queen Anne design evidences shades of French chateaux having hip roof with gables, corner turrets, and ornamental capped chimneys keeping with the Victorian era. It would have four floors of 3,500 square feet each and contain the largest volume under roof of any house in Traverse City at the time it was built. The home was completed in 1893 at cost between $35,000 and $40,000 to build at a time when other large homes of the same era, comprising eight to ten rooms were built for between $2,000 and $8,000.

NORTHERN MICHIGAN
EXPOSED
BY JOHN A. GESSNER
The Light Within Winter in Michigan is a blanket of gray with threads of color. The monotony of the season is unpredictably and gloriously interrupted with flashes of brilliance. On one such evening in January, I walked along a shelf of ice several hundred feet off shore. Chilled to the bone and quickly losing sensation in my fingers and toes, I was inspired to carry on, like a donkey with a carrot, by the promise of a reward at day’s end. The ice at the edge of the shelf rose and fell in harmony, like a sonnet, dedicated to those willing to find it. The clouds hung low above the horizon and split the sky in two; darkness crept from above as the light of day began to fade. Like a dying ember resisting darkness, the sun shone with all it’s might and set aglow the ice before me. Although winter can feel like an endless shroud of gray, it’s the intermittent threads of color that make it complete.
