At the end of the day your feet should be dirty, your hair messy, and your eyes sparkling… LETTER FROM THE
editor
S
ummer is a magical time in Northern Michigan! I wait all year for these few months where the air is warm, the waters are blue, and everyday is another opportunity to eat Moomers Ice Cream. Another scoop of Cherries Jubilee, anyone?
My main goal this summer is to put away my phone and computer to enjoy our region’s countless family opportunities. This includes spending multiple days at the beach, exploring the BayLife Magazine editor Kristy Kurjan: hiking trails at Sleeping Bear Wear Your Wings TC Mural #wearyourwingstc Dunes, backyard barbeques, relaxing on the patio, and yes, eating lots of ice cream with my kids, even though my bikini will not agree. I strive to be on vacation in my own town, to explore, and to celebrate. Like many visitors, I want to take pictures of spots that bring me happiness. Turn to page 40 to find a list of some of the most InstagramWorthy photo ops in TC. While researching the article, I was inspired by local artist Heather Spooner’s “Wear Your Wings TC” mural located at the corner of Boardman Avenue and Front Street, on the side of The Coin Slot. After reaching out to her, she told me the inspiration behind her magnificent wings: “I wanted to create a piece of art that locals and visitors were able to easily interact with while also providing everyone with reminders of equality, unity, love and acceptance. All of which I have felt overwhelmingly since moving to the area just shy of two years ago.” Well done, Heather! Your public art is not only a local attraction, but influences everyone who sees it both in person and in pictures. You can search for it on Instagram under the hashtag: #wearyourwingstc

Members of West Shore Bank’s Grand Traverse Team
“Some lenders make promises. West Shore Bank makes dreams come true.” - Doug Fierberg, Mortgage client
When Bryan Ulbrich, Left Foot Charley’s owner, recently shared his philosophy on how to care for wine, the sentiment sounded very similar to our client service philosophy. In his words: ‘Every day, we get to deal with a living product. It’s our responsibility to respond to what we are given, keep it safe, make it the best it can be.’
It’s incredible to see what happens when you assemble a team of experts that combines extensive knowledge with an entrepreneurial spirit focused on delivering dreams. The West Shore Bank Traverse City team has grown to 18 and provides a level of service to the market that is unmatched. And, there is nothing better than celebrating a client’s success— like the recent 15th anniversary and latest expansion of Left Foot Charley.
Congratulations to Bryan, and to all our clients who continue, every day, to live their life’s grand adventure.

C hef Mickey Cannon Food & Beverage Director Grand Traverse Resort and Spa
• Spent 3 years cooking at the Italian Embassy in Washington D.C. • Cooked for 4 presidents – Ford, Reagan, Bush Sr. and Clinton • In 1987 was named “Outstanding Young Chef” in D.C. • Served as Personal Chef to Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. • Executive Chef in the Soviet Union’s first American hotel. • Owned and operated the Italian restaurant, Tuscan Bistro, for 13 years.
You have cooked for presidents and celebrities around the globe, who was your favorite? Sandra Day O’Connor—she’s a remarkable woman. You are a Pittsburgh native, what brought your family to Northern Michigan? I helped a friend open Windows restaurant in 1985, and the rest is history! As the new Food & Beverage Director at The Grand Traverse Resort and Spa what are you excited to bring to the table? I plan to bring a whole new attitude about food and service. My goal has always been to provide guests with a fun, friendly experience, and we’re going to be expanding that approach to our outlets here at the Resort. Tuscan Bistro was know for made from scratch cuisine. Can we look forward to the same attention to detail at the resort? Absolutely. You’ll see there is already some Tuscan Bistro influence at Aerie Restaurant & Lounge (located on the 16th floor) and in Sweetwater American Bistro. We just rolled out new menus in all of our outlets, including the brand-new Jack’s Taproom. How is your life different now that you wear a suit and tie? Really different. I’ve never had so much time at home, and I’m really enjoying it. As a family business, your kids all worked at Tuscan Bistro. Where are they now? Kathleen is a doctor in San Diego, Kellie is moving to San Diego too, Kari is going to teach, and Jake just graduated. What three words best describe you? Hardworking, passionate, and fun. Are there any words of wisdom you live by? Wake up and enjoy your day. Who is your hero? My father-in-law. He was a great man, and I learned a lot from him. He treated me like I was his own son. What is your perfect Up North Summer Day with your wife Dania by your side? Sitting on our boat watching the sun go down over Leelanau.

Park Street Cafe, opening early July 2019, is setting the bar high for coffee, food, and service. Local roasting company Mundos Roasting created a unique blend of coffee solely for the establishment, but the details go further. “We took the time to travel to Barista school and learn about coffee,” explains co-owner Carolyn Weeks, with husband Derek Weeks. “We’ve put in the same time and effort at each step, from bread, meat, and cheese selections, to pastries. We want you to have a “Wow” experience, each time you visit us.” Hungry customers will order at the counter (or on the website) from a menu filled with flavor. Serving breakfast, lunch, and pastries, their delicious items include delicate croissants, to avocado toast, and a Park Street Monte Cristo that melts in the mouth. Sit down for a relaxing downtown meal or grab quick take-out. Either way, Park Street Cafe has you covered!

Alicia Manson and Lyndsey Egli, co-owners of Gold Baby Biscuits in Suttons Bay.
Rise and shine, foodies! Looking to enjoy a biscuit sandwich that makes you squeal with delight? Try Gold Baby Biscuits in Suttons Bay, which opened in June. They may be tiny, but they serve up some BIG tasty biscuits! Since biscuits are often thought of as Southern street food, much of their menu is influenced by the American South. A breakfast, brunch, and carry-out lunch spot, they specialize in biscuit sandwiches, homemade pies, scrumptious soups, and a handful of other delicious goodies. Gold Baby’s biscuits are substantial but light, with crunchy edges and a pillowy interior.
“People are really excited about our biscuits, and we hear from a lot of folks that they remind them of biscuits that they ate growing up in the south, but better,” says co-owner Alicia Manson. “There's a lot of different kinds of biscuits out there in the world, and this is the kind that we like to eat, so we thought other people would love them, too! We're so honored when they tell us they're the best biscuits they've ever had.” It was important to co-owners Alicia Manson and Lyndsey Egli to develop a food establishment that the community could use, and that folks really needed. As they developed the concept, they talked to a lot of people who were eager for affordable, well-made, and substantial take-out breakfast and lunch food. “We're just so thrilled to be a part of Suttons Bay and Leelanau County,” says Manson. “We are truly fortunate to have this opportunity to contribute to the local economy and share the food (and the work!) that we love with our community.”

Founder Bruce Hawthorne and his wife have familial ties to Northern Michigan dating back to the 1800s, and started their own journey in viticulture by purchasing an 80-acre farm on Old Mission Peninsula. The magnificently secluded tasting room is located on a high bluff overlooking both bays. Surrounded by preserved land, visitors can delight in the beautiful, private views of vineyard, woods and water. On the cozy patio, indulge in a gourmet cheese plate and a glass of the Barrel Reserve Auxerrois. This European varietal is related to Chardonnay and similar to Pinot Blanc, and provides a bright tropical fruit nose highlighted by pineapple, apricot and guava. For the red drinker, the Lemberger, or Blaufränkisch, is an Austrian varietal known for its black pepper aromas combined with the smoky toast of the barrel. Explore the fantastic tasting options as you listen to talented live musicians such as E Minor and Dags und Timmah. Meet your new favorite person in Jan Van Maanen, the engaging and friendly host at the vineyard. An avid and knowledgeable wine professional, Jan and her team provide guests with an exceptional wine tasting experience. Spend some time with Jan and learn more about her life’s motto: “Life is a journey, to be enjoyed one sip at a time!” For wine club members, Wine Wednesdays are the best kept secret in Traverse City: $2 glasses! I’ll see you there!

FEELING
GOOD
SWIM
BIKE Chain Reaction of Kindness BY ANDREW DZIERWA
The sunset in this picture overlooked East Grand Traverse Bay on a warm evening last July. The young man in the boat is me, Andrew Dzierwa. The photographer was not someone that I had ever met previously. She had been driving on US-31 when she noticed a truly picture-perfect sunset. She parked her car in the boat launch and pulled out her camera for a photo. I returned to the boat launch when the sun had finally set, only to find that the woman had waited there for my return. She had “taken the most beautiful picture of me on the water,” she said, and “wanted to send me a copy.” The woman did not have to take that picture, and she most certainly did not have to wait for me at the boat launch. This was a simple and selfless act of compassion. In our modern society, actions like these are not often advertised or considered important. We live in a world where compassion no longer generates profit, and negatively-perceived news is considered the most interesting. On the contrary, we should all show more compassion in our daily lives. Compassion is a chain reaction, and this picture captures that perfectly. The photographer simply saw the possibility that sharing a picture might make someone’s day a little bit better. Mission accomplished.
Andrew Dzierwa was born and raised in Traverse City and recently graduated from Grand Valley State University with a degree in Business Economics. Andrew now works full-time at Hagerty and enjoys fishing and playing the piano in his free time.

RUN TC’s Inaugural Ironman IRONMAN 70.3 Traverse City Sunday, August 25 at 7am Strong, athletic, and driven! These are the athletes competing in Traverse City’s inaugural Ironman 70.3 on August 25. The triathlon consists of a 1.2 mile swim in West Grand Traverse Bay, a 56 mile bike ride through Leelanau County and Benzie County, and a 13.1 mile run along Boardman Lake, finishing on Front Street in downtown Traverse City. Spectators might be surprised at the array of people that they see competing on race day: everyone from super-fit pro-athletes with fancy equipment to first-time triathlons who are checking Ironman off their bucket list. Similar to a parade, there is no admission ticket to watch. According to Race Director Joel Gaff, the event sold out in less than an hour when registration opened last fall. The cherry on top for racers, the 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Traverse City will offer 30 qualifying slots to the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Taupõ, New Zealand.

The magnificence of the waterfront views on Dudley’s Deck at The Pier Restaurant in Harbor Springs can’t be beat! As the only waterfront restaurant in Downtown Harbor Springs, it is quite literally “on the water.” The Pier serves a busy, year round clientele, with the busiest day of the year being America’s Birthday, July 4th. It is on that day that they serve over 6,000 bottles of beer to a red, white, and blue crowd.

ROCKS LANDING With a “rock solid” view of Crystal Lake, delicious food, and an impressive cocktail list, this lakeside dinner destination is worth the drive! Opened in June 2018, Rocks Landing sits on M-22 with a back porch facing Crystal Lake. “We have one of the greatest views of any restaurant in Northern Michigan, with our porch, literally, inches from Crystal Lake,” says Steve Tebo, partner (with brother-in-law Paul Danes) and general manager at Rocks Landing. The restaurant's intimate dining areas, including the main dining room, enclosed porch, and open-air patio limit it to parties of 6 or less. Customer favorites include branzino (Mediterranean sea bass) with beluga lentils and roasted fennel, pinchos morunos (Moorish-spiced pork) with basmati rice and romesco sauce, grilled Spanish octopus, and steak frites. The Alfresco Life
WITH KIRSTEN PAPPAS
Summer is in full swing! It’s a time of celebration, revolving doors of house guests, and family get togethers. Outdoor living and entertaining become our way of life. It’s the time of year when our exterior spaces become just as important as our interior spaces. Whether you are enjoying libations on the deck or dining alfresco in your garden, there are steps you can take to enhance you and your guests’ experience. Start by creating a focal point. Easy, right? Yep! When you are fortunate enough to live in Northern Michigan, you are already on your way! By taking advantage of this beautiful place we call home, you are given the opportunity to capitalize and emphasize some spectacular outdoor spaces, naturally. Whether it’s spectacular views of water, beautiful gardens or sunsets in the orchard, create a gathering space around these views.

Set your table with stylish linens, natural arrangements, and some recyclable bamboo plates for a look that is très chic! Comfortable seating arrangements are an important element for summer entertaining. Use side tables and coffee tables to ensure your guests have a spot for their refreshments and snacks. Give an outdoor rug a try: it will ground your space further and create an area unique from others. Do your research to be sure you choose performance materials. Waterproof and UV resistant rugs and chair cushions will extend the life of your furnishings and keep them looking fresh. Place a few planters in your space as a great way to add greenery and texture to a patio. Twinkle lights and hurricane lanterns are a simple way to bring ambiance to your setting. These are just a few tips to successful outdoor entertaining. Most importantly, surround yourself with your favorite people. After all, that is what adds life to the party!

Waterside Living on Cattail Point WRITTEN BY KRISTY KURJAN PHOTOS PROVIDED BY BAY AREA CONTRACTING LLC.
WHEN VACATIONING as children in Northport, the
homeowners of this magnificent new build fell in love with the beauty of the Leelanau Peninsula. They appreciated Lake Leelanau’s close proximity to Traverse City and the world class Walleye fishing, so when the opportunity arose, they decided to build their dream! Cozy, classic, and bright, this Cottage Craftsman home has a touch of rustic lodge, a style that’s lovingly referred to as a “Cott-odge” (hermeneutically pronounced “Cah-todge”). Perched on the east side of south Lake Leelanau, this grand home offers easy access to everything there is to see and do in the area, including high-end restaurants, art galleries, festivals, and Sleeping Bear National Park.
ONE OF THE FIRST items guest notice as they enter the home is the solid walnut, one-of-a-kind front door. The custom glass design was by Guido Goldkuhle, in collaboration with Marty Rhein of BAC Design Group, Inc. The home sits on “Cattail Point” so it was important to the owner to incorporate cat tails somewhere in the home. The magnificent piece of art cannot help but make the owners smile every time they look at it. Beside the door is an open board and batten wainscot staircase leading to the second level. Built in 2017 by Dean Adams, Bay Area Contracting, Inc., the house was designed by Ken Williams of Design Classics in collaboration with Marty Rhein, BAC Design Group, Inc. The home’s interior design and kitchen design are by Marty Rhein, BAC Design Group, Inc. Known for great Walleye, a highlight of this Lake Leelanau location allowed the owners access to jump on a fishing boat on most summer days. Visitors to the home will find “fish art” throughout the décor. Navy is the second element that is used throughout the home to complement the soft whites, as well as reflect the beautiful ever-changing blues of Lake Leelanau. The interior paint pallet includes a beach-blend of neutrals by Sherwin Williams framed with Benjamin Moore’s “White Dove” as trim.

LUSH GREEN GRASS help define flowing planting beds intermixed with easily maintained perennials, flowering shrubs, tall evergreens for screening, and splashes of annuals blend. The expansive outdoor area, designed by Kyle Caldecott of Robinson’s Landscaping & Nursery Inc. was created with multi-levels to enjoy the waterside activities. 'Little Lime' Hydrangeas were used throughout to help unify the diverse planting scheme which includes imported hostas from the owner’s home down state.

ONE OF THE MOST TREASURED
areas in this home is the kitchen, with a large island made of brushed “Fantasy Brown” granite that the entire family can easily gather around. Custom White Dove perimeter cabinets are paired with a rustic glazed birch hood over the Wolf range from Max’s Service & Appliances. The backsplash is soft white subway tile with pewter accents, and a prep-sink on the island creates an efficient way for additional chefs to help out with family dinners. An open floor plan maximizes the water views from a majority of the rooms in the home.

SUNSETS ARE BREATHTAKING
from multiple spots throughout the home. With a southwest beachside view of Lake Leelanau, sitting on the dock is the perfect vantage point in the summer. In colder months, the Sun Room’s western facing windows is the ideal location to watch the sunset with a glass of wine in hand. This makes the room one of the owner’s favorite spots. A “Lake Life” sign hangs on the walls of the Sun Room, reminding its readers this is a place to relax and sink into the “UpNorth” way of life.

WAKING UP in the master bedroom
of this home means glorious lake views. The master is located on the first floor at the east end to welcome the rising sun. The Master bath has a deep soaking tub, spacious shower, and heated tile flooring. With five grandkids, the bunk room is a lively location. “I have fond memories of sleeping with all of my cousins when going to the cabin as a child,” explains the owner. “I wanted to recreate that feeling for them.” To accommodate even more family, a bonus room above the garage was designed as a guest apartment with a mini kitchen, bathroom, bedroom, and living area. While not the most glamorous room in any home, the main level laundry room frequently uses the front-load washer/dryers by Electrolux. Custom cabinets line the laundry room in grey-stained maple wood with light white/grey quartz countertops. Other features include a laundry sink, tile flooring, dog bowl for the owner’s poodles, and a fold out clothing rack to dry a day’s worth of swimming suits.

SUMMER ENTERTAINING is always
enjoyable with the home’s outdoor grilling area featuring a Weber gas grill. The “upper deck” with green Adirondack chairs is an ideal congregating area for coffee in the morning, and it is always beautiful! After the sun goes down, the beach fire pit is a perfect spot for s’mores with grandkids, wine, conversation, and star gazing. The home’s exterior is Cabots “Slate” siding with Sherwin Williams “Pure White” trim. The roof is made of a CertainTeed architectural shingle in “Driftwood” with a metal standing seam accent in “Glavalume” silver. Other exterior details include exquisite stone work and insulated carriage style “Pure White” metal garage doors which open into a spacious three car garage. “The best way to gauge the success of the home’s design and construction was the homeowners’ smiles and excitement as they opened their home to us for a personal tour through it post-construction,” explains builder Dean Adams of Bay Area Contracting. “The success of the home is indicative of the teamwork of all those involved – including the homeowners. It was a privilege and a lot of fun!”
