The work week started and so did we, delivering more magazines far and wide, up to Harbor Springs, Petoskey, Charlevoix, Elk Rapids and back to TC and by the end of the day Zach became the newest member of the Baylife Family, taking the reigns as our new Advertising Sales Manager. I am pleased to report that he is a magazine selling rock star, who knew? But much more importantly everyone that has met him has told me terrific things. (That’s all we can ever hope as a parent, right?) It’s almost like we planned it! (But we didn’t). For the life of me I cannot imagine why we never thought of this before. His gift of the gab and enigmatic personality are finally serving him well, and I am a proud momma. Proud to introduce you to my son, Zach Fowler PHOTO BY STEVE BOLLINGER

thought that I already had an overwhelming appreciation of this amazing area that we call home, but lately I have been so blessed to see it with fresh new eyes. For the past year I had been urging my youngest son, Zach, to move here. Trying to always sweeten the pot in phone conversations to him in Washington DC, bragging that we had just spent a day at the beach, or been skiing all day. Why wouldn’t you want to live here? Duh. Finally to my absolute joy, he recently took me up on the challenge and packed up all his cherished belongings of the last 22 years and moved here. Right as the Memorial weekend started in full glorious swing. On his first weekend here it was 80 degrees, downtown was bustling with familiar faces, we popped to the rooftop bar of the Hotel Indigo before its big debut, we dined at a restaurant where the owner greeted us with hugs and spent the entire Sunday being a tourist travelling from town to town meandering along M22. Along the way we collected Petoskey stones on the beach, squeezed in a Boomchunka cookie, a slice of Grand Traverse Pie and even Moomers ice cream. Besides the fact that we probably gained a few pounds, did I mention the entire time I was actually working, we cheerfully delivered the last issue of Baylife wherever we went to big smiles from people proclaiming, “we love this magazine.” Also along the way, the obvious was staring us all in the face, Zach reveled in all the social aspects of meeting people, animated, personable and sincere, making conversation wherever he went and quickly gaining a passion for the beauty of the surroundings that he didn’t appreciate when he lived here just a few short years ago.
It’s been so amazing to be reminded of how truly remarkable the people of our community are. Warm and so wonderfully welcoming with open arms. The last six weeks has been a whirlwind of teaching Zach the ropes, but he’s a quick study and in the process Baylife has picked up a new buzz, new passion and a new fresh face with dreams and aspirations. It has been truly exhilarating, I already loved what I did but along the way I have also gained an entirely new perspective, and have been invigorated to dig in deeper and make Baylife its best ever. I also don’t have a choice, as I have been kidding I actually feel like Zach is my new boss! I have to be more organized, explain things and be accountable. It’s a rough life this Living the Northern Dream. I also didn’t mention with all this work talk that I am truly grateful to have my little family in harmony, Teaghan is now 8 and simply adores having her big brother around. Yes, there’s more schedules, chaos, grocery shopping, cooking, more laundry, more noise, more kids yelling MOM but I am a Happy Mom in Baylife Heaven. So Zach and I are proud to bring you the biggest Baylife magazine ever. There’s more pages, more content, more contributors, more fabulous advertisers and it’s only going to get more amazing. Get ready for a great ride. For now, throw us in your beach bag; take us on your boat or your summer vacay. 1 large Red Beets 1 Large Golden Beets 2 Tbsp. Lemon Juice 1 Tbsp. Salt ½ Tbsp. Honey ½ Tbsp. Roasted Hazelnut 4 Tbsp. Olive Oil 1 Tbsp. Shallot minced 5 Valencia Orange Segments 1 Tbsp. Crème Fraiche Procedure:

Cover beets in aluminum foil and roast in oven at 350 degrees for 45 - 60 minutes. Peel skin off the beets and cut into medium dice. Whisk together lemon juice and olive oil in a small bowl with shallot, season to taste with salt and honey. In a medium mixing bowl toss beets with lemon dressing and adjust seasoning as desired. Arrange beets on a serving platter and garnish with orange slices, crème fraiche, Thai basil and olive oil. Garnish with roasted hazelnuts, Thai basil and olive oil. Enjoy!

As the temperature rises in Northern Michigan you may be looking for something delicious to quench your thirst. Look no further and pour yourself a glass of Rosé. If you have stayed away from “pink” wine in the thought that it is going to be sweet and just plain awful, think again. Rosé wines from the Provence region of France have been a staple for hot summer nights for generations. Our Baylife local fitness and health coach, Jala Wharton also adds the title of “runner” to her busy life. As a mom of 4 kids, how does she do it and why we ask? You’re an avid runner how long have you been running? I've been running for over 11 years now. I started after I had my first child, Harrison. What do you feel are the key benefits that it brings your lifestyle? For one, it keeps me sane! I call it my Therapy Time. The kids know, it's my time to decompress, sort out all the clutter & chaos, that’s swirling in my head. Some days it's just me plugging into my music, tuning out the world. Other’s with all 4 kiddos, pushing the double stroller (which is more with than I weigh), and my 2 older kids either on their bikes or running alongside. Chatting with them about anything and everything as I run, it’s been the best bonding we've ever had! Completely unplugged and present. It’s a killer workout. Where are some of your fave spots to pound the pavement? I'm a creature of habit. I have a couple different route's that all eventually lead towards the Tart Trail on West Bay. I love running along the water no matter what the weather is. If I feel like I need an extra Butt Kicking, I'll make my way to Wayne Hill for a crushing hill climb! I definitely feel the Burn for a couple days afterwards. For the novice runner what are some great tips? Get good shoes! I was struggling with knee pain & went into Running Fit downtown. My running life was changed forever with their help. Every 6 Months I get a new pair. Start slow and steady, working your way up. Focus on your stride. Set a goal! I suggest a fun 5K. Sign up, commit and start your training! Find a workout buddy to join you. Some of my nearest and dearest friends came from running with them. Any running gear/accessories you can suggest? Absolutely, first thing wear bright colors; make sure your visible at all times. Stay hydrated & make sure you eat/drink good food to fuel your body. My favorite go to is fresh Beet, Turmeric & Ginger Juice the night before it reportedly increases your Stamina. Delish! Is there any running no no’s? When first starting out, don’t overdo it. Listen to your body. Never push yourself into an injury. Recovery from a running injury is long and painful. Take days off. On a morning when you don’t feel like running, what does that little voice tell you? Jala, you know you always feel better after a run - so get out of your jammies and go! As a Doctor of Plastic Surgery you get to change people’s lives what is the most rewarding part? When I receive a hug at the end of an arduous reconstructive process from someone who is no longer just a patient but a friend. You also trained in Belgium studying Breast Reconstruction bringing this back to help breast cancer patients here, tell us a little? I learnt state of the art techniques using the body’s own tissue. I’m excited to envision a day when local women who are diagnosed feel fortunate to have this technology here and don’t have to travel to bigger cities for these exceptional treatments. On a lighter note, during my studies I got great experience in the art of Belgium Beer Sampling! (After work, not during). What is something that would surprise us about you? I love old trucks and own a couple of International Scouts with removable hard tops. On a work note we love to rock some tunes in the surgery room to keep things light playing all genres of music like dance, slow delta blue 80’s and a little reggae. But don’t worry about a thing, we are professionals. You’re an avid sailor, tell us why? I was always in the habit of working late Wednesday nights and would gaze at the parade of spinnakers on the bay. It made me think life is too short and I should get back into sailing. So I bought a race boat and have been torturing myself ever since. Everyone else literally blows me away. I am persistently bad but it’s a real challenge and I keep sailing back every week. What’s one thing checked off on your bucket list? My dad and I used to go diving and 2 years ago we reinvigorated that tradition. We headed to Grand Cayman, on a father son trip and plan on more trips in the future. 26

Originally from Troy; however, my husband and I lived in Rochester Hills for many years before deciding to move to the Traverse City area in 2002. Last year the TCG&CC celebrated 100 years, what fun things are non-members missing out on? Friendships, golf, social events such as wine dinners, beer dinners, themed dinners, tennis, pickle ball, Jr. Golf, Sports Camp for Kids, Kids Night Out (gives mom and dad the chance to have a nice relaxing dinner while the children are playing and having a good time). What’s one thing about the club people would be surprised to know? How relaxed it is. People tend to think a private country club is “stuffy” or “pretentious”; Our members are friendly, inviting and they love to laugh. Our staff makes the difference too, when you walk into the club, they call you by name and they treat you as if you are a part of their own family. What’s your favorite pastime in Traverse City so far? Visiting the Commons Farmer’s Market on Saturday’s, grabbing a quick bite to eat at all the fantastic restaurants, spending time with good friends, biking the TART Trail, exploring new places with my husband. Anywordsofwisdomoraquoteyoutrytoliveby? “Remind yourself its ok not to be perfect.” Don’t get me wrong, I strive for perfection each and every day because it’s what drives me but sometimes I forget to stop and smell the roses because I’m too concerned about every little detail whether it’s about business or personal. What’s one thing on your bucket list you have checked off, and tell us a little about it? For my 50th birthday I went skydiving in Harbor Springs. It was exhilarating! To make it even more challenging we jumped out of the plane backwards instead of the normal way; I love challenges. We have to ask, you work all day at a golf club, do you golf? onica and Giorgio Lo Greco’s dream came true in the summer of 2012 when they opened their little slice of heaven Pepenero, an Italian restaurant in the Villages of the Mercato. Chef Giorgio was born and raised in Palermo, Italy, learning to cook at the age of seven in his family’s kitchen.
After working at his Uncle’s famed restaurant in Sicily, he travelled all over the world as a Top Chef on luxury cruise ships. Where he found his soulmate in life, Monica. Savoring their true Italian wine while lingering over the European cuisines that Giorgio has created, personally making each and every dish to order from the freshest ingredients bursting with flavor. Each and every mouthwatering recipe is the culmination of Giorgio’s fond memories of Grandmothers, Mothers and Aunts. The only complaint is the tiny café like restaurant is limited by size, well no more. Since its inception we have remained loyal “family” patrons. Which is why we are absolutely overjoyed to share the news of Monica and Giorgio’s life’s work dream come true. We’ve decided instead of us trying to capture the very essence of their last six months’ hard work (their spacious, sophisticated, and amazing new place), we invited Monica to put pen to paper and tell the story in her own words. What Monica may forget to tell you is she is also a designer, the spectacular interior designs are all her endeavor. Prepare to be WOWED!
“The new PepeNero is located at the heart of Building 50 - actually the last remaining empty space –on the first floor of the Kirkbride Hall building. By moving to the new location, we will increase its sitting capacity from 42 seats to approximately 100 (equally divided between 2 distinct concepts). In addition to new decor and ambiance improvements, our philosophy will remain the same: we will maintain high quality service and ingredients that gained PepeNero so many compliments and repeated customers since its opening. Because we have more space, we can be more creative. One of the trends we see in today’s restaurants is people want more ways to enjoy a sense of place. We are adding another layer of experience with a wine lounge. This is something very new for the Traverse City dining scene. Basically, we are opening two types of restaurants (with two different names), served by the same kitchen team. Giving our guest the chance to sit at the bar one night and experience our Wine Lounge, then to return the next and have a completely different experience in our PepeNero dining room. A third experience - The Retail section, will give them the chance to bring PepeNero’s quality home. Since under one name our mixed “idea” can be confusing and risks not having a defined identity for either one of the concepts, therefore the restaurant and wine lounge will be divided under two separate names. Ballaró Wine Lounge and PepeNero Ristorantino Mediterraneo (which will keep the same image and branding. This way we can maintain the small, intimate and quaint atmosphere as our original location). The separate wine bar with its classy, upscale and stylish atmosphere, offers guests Italian wine by the glass or flights whether they wish to stand at the bar or relax at the high hop tables. Tasters may pair their wines with a range of tapas (small plates) -
formaggi, charcuterie, house made pastas, market fresh fish or meats - all dishes are inspired by regional Italian favorites with an emphasize on Sicily. The wine lounge

market. In Palermo, Ballarò is an ideal place to break up tranquil beach days and somber trips to museums and historic sites. Expect the bustle of an open-air market: bartering, music and groceries – under the shade of red umbrellas alongside the constant whir of Vespas. The often stentorian vendors also sell prepared and à la minute fare. Grab a piattino (little plate) of fresh eats and shop the market for an age-old Palermo experience. Visiting Ballaró Wine Lounge here in Traverse City is one of the most direct ways 34

The come-as-you-are no-reservations-needed setting of the wine bar is meant to enjoy the Italian concept of aperitivo – those after-work hours to enjoy a glass of wine or two and some bites. Ballaro’s trendy but comfortable
atmosphere and authentic fare are just right for any occasion, whether you’re in the mood for a leisurely APERITIVO, a late night DIGESTIVO with a SNACK, or a cozy Italian DINNER. The re-designed PepeNero with approx. 60 seats will follow the same successful concept that we had created at our current location. We just re-imagined it, re-invented it but we will continue to be a place in which people will enjoy even more. The improvements are inspired not only by our travels around the world and places visited in our European
home -Italy, but by the suggestions of our clientele. It is very important for us to listen to what our clients are saying; and, what we heard in regards to ambiance is: intimacy and romance are extremely important. The restaurant will seem like it is plucked from a charming Italian village. The restaurant glows in hues of muted amber from plated cognac glass accented with rustic black metal details chandeliers, which will burnish the oak table tops and brick yellow washed walls making everything look drenched in romance.” At press time they were oh so close to opening.
Waiting on permits, training newly added staff, filling the wine walls and stocking Giorgio’s magnificent new kitchen. They were also planning a trip downstate to customs and imports to personally pick up their authentic VESPA scooter just shipped from Italy. The scooter will actually sit at eye level separating the restaurant and wine lounge by the bar. We can’t wait to sit at the stunning black lacquer bar and raise a glass in Salute. ccording to Indian legend northern Michigan’s North and South Fox Islands were created when Manabozho and a wolf set out in a race from the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula to Harbor Springs. In order to win the race, Manabozho threw large chunks of earth and clumps of trees into Lake Michigan to use as stepping stones. He won the race and also created these beautiful islands. islands

Secluded Islands have the power to ignite the imagination, with stories of buried treasure and shipwrecks, (the Islands have ten on record and there are tall tales of hidden riches), these reasons alone make for fascinating intrigue. But South Fox Island proudly boasts a true step back in time, buildings and structures from yesteryear that were in dire need for repair. Since 2004 it has been a labor of love undergoing an extensive restoration project. With tireless efforts from dedicated volunteers to preserve and protect the history of the Lighthouse station and its surroundings. Way back in 1866, the Lighthouse Board recognized that vessels sailing north from Chicago to the Straits of Mackinac in westerly winds often hugged the western shore of Lake Michigan passing between South Fox Island and North Manitou Island. It was decided a light on South Fox Island would allow mariners to make the crossing at night and would also mark the protected anchorage in the lee of the island, to provide a safe haven from northeast gales. A lighthouse was approved and built and in 1867 Keeper Henry J. Roe moved in. Many more keepers would follow until 1958, Allen P. Cain, the light’s last keeper, left the island after the

light had been fully automated. It functioned for a decade before being discontinued in 1968. In 2002, Bradley Boese and Cathy Allchin formed the Fox Island Education Association (FIEA) with the goal of preserving the light station. In 2004 Sandy Bradshaw and John McKinney founded the South Fox Island Lighthouse Restoration Project to revive the preservation plans, and the group’s name was shortened to Fox Island Lighthouse Association (FILA). We are proud to have Cathy pick up the story of this Northern Treasure from here and we entice you to go experience and explore the remote beauty and history to be found there. South Fox Island Light Station is one of the most unique, almost unknown islands to visit in northern Michigan. It’s not an easy spot to get to. Access is only by boat. There is no dock or harbor to pull into, but if you make the trip, the jewel you find is well worth it. Located south of Beaver Island and North of the Manitou Islands, the station is located on the very southern tip of south fox island and its light tower is visible to any vessel that passes by. Access is best from the south west side of the island, where clear beach runs from end to end. Anchor off and dingy in. A pathway leads you through the shallow woods to a clearing. The station grounds total 115 acres. There are 7 buildings remaining at the station connected by over 500’ of sidewalk. On your right, a short way up the path, is the Fog Signal building (1895) originally a steam whistle fog signal, it was replaced in 1929 with a diaphone horn; at the same time the beacon was converted from kerosene to electricity. The steel tower (1934) next to the fog signal building came from Sapelo Island, Georgia. It was reassembled on the island and automated in 1958, the light was finally discontinued in 1969.

Continue down the sidewalk and to the left you pass a small wood frame workshop (1897) often used as a summer kitchen. Down by the shore is the boathouse (1897) also visible from the water and patiently restored by the Fox Island Lighthouse Association.

1867 Top of the Lighthouse
Heading up the hill from the workshop is the original lighthouse. This was built in 1867 of Cream Milwaukee brick and consisted of a keeper's house with attached tower; a fourthorder Fresnel lens was used for the flashing red beacon. The small white brick building next to the tower is the oil house (1895) erected at a time when fuel for the light was changed from lard – which they could store inside, to kerosene which had to be stored outside. The oil house holds 360 gallons of fuel. Next door, to the west of the lighthouse, is an impressive 2 story red brick Assistant Keepers Quarters (1910). There are 3 apartments that the assistant keepers would stay in. With indoor plumbing and electricity, which was quite rare, for any building at that time. For almost 100 years the station was a valuable asset to vessels traversing the lakes. Now modern technology has replaced the lights of the lakes, but the history remains and must be preserved.

The station was decommissioned in 1969, transferred in 1971, and is managed by the DNR and the Fox Island Lighthouse Association (FILA) – a non-profit organization. Since 2004 volunteers have maintained the grounds and repaired buildings. The long term plans are to construct a safe dock, continue to restore the buildings and establish a keeper program so there will always be someone to greet visitors and share the history of this amazing jewel. Fox Fun Facts 1867: $18,000 are granted by Congress for the construction of the lighthouse. Nov. 1, 1867, the light, equipped with a flashing red 4th order Fresnel lens, is lit by first lighthouse keeper, Henry J. Roe. The keeper's salary is $150.00 per quarter. The height of the tower from the base to the focal plane of the lantern is 39 feet. The revolving red light is 68 feet above lake level.
1895: A fog signal building is erected and a 10-inch steam whistle fog signal is put in operation. A brick oil house is built with a capacity of 360 gallons of kerosene for the new lantern that replaces the old lard oil lantern. 1915: Deer are introduced on the island. 1933: The light tower on Sapelo Island, Georgia, a square pyramidal cast iron skeletal tower of the 'Sanibel' class, erected in 1905, is disassembled and the components are shipped to South Fox Island.
1971: The U.S. Department of Interior transfers the southernmost 115 acres to the DNR for public park 1980: The U.S. Department of Interior transfers the lighthouse and grounds to the State of Michigan & recreation.

Ginger & Honey Chicken Wings If you need a little outdoor BBQ inspiration, we found this by famed chef Jamie Oliver on www.jamieoliver. com with recipe by Lloyd Hayes. • 25 chicken wings • Ginger and honey marinade • 5 green onions, finely sliced • 5 tbsp. honey • 2 tbsp. soy sauce • 1 red chili, sliced • 1-2 cm piece of ginger, grated • 4-5 sprigs of thyme, leaves picked • Mix all the marinade ingredients in a bowl to make a sticky sauce. • Place the chicken wings in a single layer in a wide, shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken, cover with cling wrap and place in the fridge to marinate for 24 hours. • Grill the wings for 15–20 minutes, turning often, until dark and the juices run clear pierced with a skewer. “For the tasty, tender wings, marinate overnight and bring them to room temperature before cooking” 60

Summer Entertaining easy
Ahh, the lazy days of summer. The 4th of July, Cherry Festival, Polka Festival and Film Festival have gone by. It is time for us locals sit enjoy our town and the last of the seasonal guests that come when the sun is shining. Your outdoor spaces become your dining room and the fresh vegetables of the season take focus for eats. Setting the table with colorful dishware, fresh flowers and linen napkins presents a casual atmosphere. The food and drink should follow suit. One of my favorite approaches to cooking for a group in the summer is to take a variety of meats, marinade them in different fruit juices and or vinaigrettes and sear them on the grill. Think basic like lime juice, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. Chicken with a basic balsamic vinaigrette marinade is juicy and tasty. Next are the side dishes. Think fresh vegetables, blanched, grilled or raw chopped, mixed with a basic vinaigrette and tossed. A couple of my favorites include corn salad made with fresh corn

sheared from the cobb, tossed with dill, Dijon mustard and white wine vinegar or a hearts of palm salad with grilled tomatoes, chives, capers and a balsamic dressing. All of these will look impressive to your guests. They are easy to make and oh so good. Serve with a simple margarita or Moscow mule (be sure to get the copper mugs) and you have the perfect summer party underway!

aura and Ron Mudry’s home is named The Lumberjack Lodge, and not just for show, it’s the actual historical heritage. It was built in 1895 by George Persons to house the lumberjacks logging and floating wood down the rivers and inland lakes. George, a Civil War veteran with a Peg Leg is the man behind the legend of the Lumberjack Lodge’s claim to fame; Peg Leg slept here, and how the historical dents in the front entry floor came to be. He purchased the property in 1894 for $205, even with a “Peg Leg” George Persons ran a ferry service around Torch Lake. Once called Persons Harbor on historical maps George certainly made his mark in more ways than one. The Lumberjack Lodge changed to a private residence in the early 50s when the Bebe family purchased it. Laura had vacationed on Torch Lake since she was a child and she and Ron rented Lumberjack Lodge for a few cherished summers. Falling in love with the home, “peg leg” dent’s and all, they decided to purchase it in 2013.
The homes setting is unique as it sits directly on Torch Lake, but the west side of the property line is Torch River. SUMMER 2016 | BAY LIFE NORTH

In 2014 they met and hired Aaron Draper of Draper Co. to enclose the lakeside porch to add living space and a deck above. This started many wheels in motion. Aaron consulted Steve Thomas of Thomas Building and Design to design a garage addition that would include a new master suite above. True to many old homes, Lumberjack Lodge had a fair amount of small bedrooms, but limited baths and space. Steve’s design flowed seamlessly with the original structure and created a master suite that would make you want to stay in bed all day. Once these plans were underway, it became clear that many of the rooms of the original structure needed updated. The main floor had been given a very rustic look with knotty pine paneling cladding both ceilings and walls.
The goal was to brighten up the spaces and give it a more cottage look that would incorporate the new set of retro styled appliances the Mudry’s had just purchased. 70

Along comes Angela from Kitchen Choreography. With her love for old structures and a goal of always maintaining the original integrity of the home while accommodating the owner’s wish list, she went to work.
True to an UpNorth Lodge concept, each bedroom suite was developed with a different theme. Working with Laura on what guests may use each space, the level of sophistication for older couples vs. fun and colorful for the younger family members was thought through. Each 72

bedroom needed to have access to a bath or its own private bath. Update showers with tile and glass enclosures were a must. Taking the only main floor bath and making it private to Laura’s dad bedroom was a priority, so they creatively tucked a powder room on the main level. The retro appliances and lodge theme were not easy to interweave. The results are unique, fun and casual. Just perfect for a place up north. Thankfully, Laura liked the use of pattern and color (as long as it was not too floral). Very special thought went into all of the details. The homeowner entry has a stunning “new” brick floor laid in a herringbone pattern. SUMMER 2016 | BAY LIFE NORTH

Clean line Wainscote details carry up the stairs and clad the walls in the master suite. The master bath has an up to date luxury shower, but also incorporated the original claw foot tub. Walking into the master bedroom you gaze in awe, the ceiling is an absolute show stopper, in mahogany bead board set in a herringbone pattern that is interrupted by beams just a shade darker. The size of this space is made cozy with wood floors and a beautiful wood burning fireplace.
The kitchen was moved closer to the water side of the house and expanded to include a wet bar and coffee station area. To maintain a lodge style, the cabinets are knotty alder wood with an autumn stain applied. All of this sits atop the original maple wood flooring and topped with a neutral granite top. To add a punch of color, the island was painted a dazzling shade of blue/green and glass tile with the matching hue was incorporated. true timber posts and beams. Taking center stage is a custom built table that Aaron’s crew made for Ron and Laura out of a single plank of a cottonwood tree. Either end of the porch became separate seating areas with natural fireplaces and a custom built bar area ready to party.
Cottage style Nickel Gap paneling, painted various shades of cream, taupe, white and green cover the walls and most of the ceilings on the main floor. True to porch style, the old porch boasts a mahogany ceiling and beams. As we head up the first flight of stairs we come to a narrow hall. To visually make the hall shorter, Angela applied a painted striped treatment to the ceiling. Nickel gap painted alternating white and blue adds interest and coordinates wonderfully with the creamy wall color. The original flooring in this area was removed and used to patch in the bedroom areas. What is now installed up here is a reclaimed product that has a lot of natural character and fits the time period of the home. On the roadside of the house are two bedrooms. A bath was added to one of the bedrooms as part of the addition and created a private suite for adult guests. The nickel gap was painted darker shades of gray and taupe and using a pair of antique lamps for inspiration, just the right shade of coral shines.
The other bedroom has a sense of fun, bright blue with twin beds, and a pop of Key West feeling Lime green. Located between the twin room and Ron’s office, is a Jack and Jill Bath with Penny Rounds from Ann Sacks 76

for the floor, white subway tile for the shower walls and a slightly deeper shade of blue for the walls.
Punchy green pendant lights at the vanity repeat the theme. Widening the upper hall way, and stealing some of the new space allowed the creation of a sitting area for morning coffee or afternoon cocktail hour. A powder bath and laundry space were added with colorful pebble flooring. All of the original doors were repurposed and had new replica hardware and hinges installed. The fruits of all this labor make it worthwhile, and the finished home showcases superb craftsmanship at its finest, meshing old and new seamlessly. The most important element of the Mudry’s renovation project, was to protect the vintage dent’s in the antique floor so the story of the Lumberjack Lodge and its history could be stories told for generations to come. 78

THEN: CIRCA 1950: Boones Long Lake is a Northern Michigan Tradition. The original Inn was built of massive pine logs by William R. Bellaw in 1949. Bellaw was the head cook at the Traverse City State Hospital and was also a well-known hunting and fishing camp cook. Bellaw named his restaurant Bellaw’s Log Cabin Inn, with the same massive fieldstone fireplace that somehow managed to survive a serious fire in 1989. Today the rebuilt restaurant is owned and operated by Nick Boudjailis.

Sweet Water One of my favorite professors when I was a student at Calvin College told me a story recently about his father. His father was from California and every time he came to visit his son at Calvin, he would refer to Lake Michigan as the “sweet water”. In California, when they would try to dig wells for drinking water near the coastline of the Pacific Ocean, the water would often be undrinkable due to the salt content. If you were lucky enough to dig a well and hit “sweet water” you were considered very fortunate.
