If you planned ahead, you are counting down the days to pack your suitcase for Spring Break, escaping to a Caribbean Sunny Retreat, daydreaming (while in car line) of being hot and steamy on a quiet poolside sun lounger, an extra strong tropical drink in hand, a juicy book, and a kids’ club to watch your darling children. In the meantime, let us begin our fling with Spring and bloom full on—Happy Girls are the prettiest, right? So surround yourself at home with fresh flowers and you’ll feel brighter. Open the doors and windows and freshen everything up. Let in the light, clean up and clean out! We can start to eat lighter, too (especially if you are bikini bound, yikes). It’s time to ditch the rib-sticking comfort food and the sweatpants. Seize the bountiful offerings of crisp fruit and veggies with a fresher style of cooking and Spring salads. You’ll feel lighter! And speaking of lighter, as you peel back those thermal layers (yikes again), don’t forget your suffering dry skin. Give it some extra TLC with exfoliating, pampering and moisturizing; you’ll glow all over. Last but not least, if you want to feel springy from head to toe—those sad feet have been caged up in socks and boots for months—book yourself a well-deserved pedicure. Strappy sandals are just a hop, skip and jump away! Ooh, and maybe a new sassy pair of shoes to once and for all cure those winter blues. We wholeheartedly decided to Sail into Spring with this issue, featuring the wonderful Traverse Area Community Sailing (TACS) organization. By the time summer really arrives here, all of their sensational kids’ sailing camps have been booked and opportunities are long gone. The hugely popular non-profit has been around since 1994 and has taught more than 4000 kids. What a great gift

This is one of the many awesome perks of publishing. I love my job. Another perk I enjoy is the diversity of people I meet who share with me their journeys to build a home here, people like Jim and Gretchen Overbeek featured in this issue. Their home, just like Spring, had to be full of light maximizing every view of the West Grand Traverse Bay. It is a long way from the rural dark log home on the Pere Marquette River that they moved from. The home was built by Mac Custom Homes, and a huge part of the story is the wonderful experience they had with Mac’s owner, Mike Collings who sadly passed away last year. Jim and Gretchen’s home is a beautiful lasting legacy to Mike’s talent, passion, work ethic and craftsmanship. Which to be honest reminds me of the famous words by Walter Hagen: “You’re only here for a short visit. Don’t hurry, don’t worry and be sure to smell the flowers along the way.” Embrace Spring, Smile, Laugh, Love and Think Happy Thoughts.

Rooms with a Cause A snowy evening and freezing cold temperatures didn’t faze the community coming out in force for the 5th Annual Celebrity Room Dream Classic held at Golden Fowler on Friday February 12. The “Golden” evening of style, color and comfort benefitted Child and Family Services and showcased local celebrities; Connie Deneweth, Susan Cogswell, Courtney Curtis, Kris McCarver and Christal Frost with dream inspired custom designed rooms. Having a Ball The 2nd Annual Great Lakes Children’s Museum Anchor Ball was a fun event for adults to dress up, celebrating the importance of children’s playtime. Guests enjoyed dinner, donating and dancing to live dueling piano’s, who entertained the crowd playing everything from Billy Joel’s Piano Man to Sir Mix a Lot’s Baby Got Back. Pathfinder’s PathFUNDER One of the most fun “Sold Out” fundraisers was held at the City Opera House March 5th; The Pathfinder School’s annual gala, named PathFUNDER. With a lively theme of “See the world through our eyes,” parents, family and friends were promised an exceptional good time, and boy did they deliver. Beer and wine flowed, paired with delectable cuisine by The Cook’s House, 9 Bean rows and Morsels. Guests were entertained with live music, performances from students and live and silent auctions. Big City Stores No more having to shop in the big cities to hit up Sephora and H&M. They will both be coming soon to The Grand Traverse Mall. The mega-makeup store Sephora will be housed in the center of J.C. Penney, a business model they adopted back in 2006. Today there are over 485 Sephora’s inside J.C. Penney stores all over the country. They feature the signature Sephora look and beauty assortment. The H&M news is a little more hush hush. We have it on great authority that H&M is coming, but it’s a little ways off with lots of construction to complete first. H&M is a Swedish multinational retail-clothing company, known for its fast-fashion clothing for men, women, teenagers and children. It’s a fun “go-to” store, as reasonable as Old Navy but way cooler. It has stores in 61 countries, and it’s the second largest global retailer. It’s about time the big city store came to Traverse City. Woo-hoo, shop ‘til we drop.
French on Front We cannot divulge a name yet, but we can tell you that the French owners of Pavlova Salon & Day Spa and The Exchange Boutique & Salon, Pierre and Anne Pujos, will be premiering their new venture on Front Street very soon. The new store will be replacing Muriel’s, who after 21 years retired. “It will not be The Exchange, and we'll keep the name under cover for another month. We should open the last two weeks of April. What I can say is that it is going to be very nice, very new for TC. It will be clothing, gifts, accessories and home. The lines will all be different than The Exchange, and the style of the store will also be very different. Prices will be very competitive and the products are exclusive to the store,” says Pierre. A Meal without Wine is called Breakfast
Alluring Alliance If you have been to the chic Warehouse MRKT lately, you may have noticed something about to hatch for Spring— an exciting new restaurant named Alliance! The word Alliance means an association formed for mutual benefit, and it’s not coincidental that this restaurant comes from the creative alliance of Warehouse MRKT owners Dan and Meridith Falconer and food professionals James Bloomfield and Pete Peterson. James is from the region (Lake City) and a graduate of Northwestern Michigan College’s culinary school. Though just 27, James worked in restaurants on the East Coast and Texas before returning to the area in 2014. For 25 years, Pete was the creator/proprietor of Tapawingo restaurant in Ellsworth, 40 miles north of Traverse City. James describes the food he creates as “rustic,” where vegetables shine. He thinks local produce and farmers are among the best in the country. The continually changing menu will also offer fine fish, seafood and meats. Restaurant guests will choose from a menu of small to larger dishes meant to be shared. ½ cup white sugar ¾ tsp dry mustard ½ tsp garlic powder ¾ tsp salt White pepper to taste Combine above ingredients. Then in a separate bowl, mix together. 1 ½ tbsp. 2015 award winner for 30 under 30 from the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). Lead Designer at Kitchen Choreography. What a great honor to be recognized nationally how did that come about? A co-worker nominated me, for the questions on the application she actually asked me so she could get a true response directly. I had to win because this was my last year being under 30 and I didn’t have another shot at it. What do you find most rewarding in your work? Seeing the project 100% completed is the most exciting and satisfying part of my job. I am also so amazed at how a design on paper can be completed in real life. How did you come to make a home in Northern Michigan? I am from Chicago and have been vacationing up in this area since I was young. While I was in school I did my internship up here and after school moved to Traverse City for a full time job. Any words of wisdom you try to live by? Work work work, harder harder harder (my dad instilled that one in me). Your parents must be so proud of you? My dad has this habit of answering the phone with “parents of 30 under 30 winner” whenever I call, hopefully that will wear out soon lol. What is something your husband would tell us about you? There are two Erica’s. Work Erica and at home Erica. Work Erica is organized, on top of it, driven while at home Erica is a bit messy, takes longer to complete projects, enjoys relaxing. But no matter what Erica is present he’d say that my weird, quirky personality will shine through. And I embrace that. ou design kitchens do you spend any time in yours? I actually am not a very good cook. My husband went to culinary school and is a chef (thank god I lucked out!). I drink my wine and create conversation while he makes dinner. One plus to that is that I watch and observe how he uses the kitchen which helps me in overall kitchen design. If he wasn’t around I’d be eating ramen and Kraft mac and cheese every night.

Dan Brady Owner of Dan Brady Paint & Wood Restoration Why Paint? I’ve always enjoyed it, in high school and in college and ran my own little company so I always knew I was a good hands-on paint guy. How did you become the spokesperson for a National Company like Frog-Tape? It’s a long story but the stars aligned, they also make duct-tape and happened to be in Traverse City. I interviewed for them and because of my DVD How to Paint Video success, promoting that I loved the product, it went really well. You are a huge part of the community what charities are you specifically involved in? I work with Habitat for Humanity; I am on the board for Michaels Place and also on the board at TBA Credit Union, and every year we do a big non-profit painting project. Are you a Northern Michigan Native? Yep, I graduated from St. Francis in 1990, I studied finance at Central Michigan University and after graduating moved downstate working with a computer staffing company. My next move up with the company would have been corporate to Wisconsin, so I decided to move back home. That was about 16 years ago. Any words of wisdom that you live by? “Enjoy the struggle, because if you learn to, everything else is cake.” What is something that no one knows about you? Well besides the fact that ironically, I am the Color-blind Painter; Clients and designers actually pick the colors not me! A fun fact is my Great Great Grandpa Latanzi sculpted the hands and the face on the Lincoln Memorial and the Lion’s outside The New York City Library. What do you do for fun? o walk into The Franklin is to be surrounded by a group of people who come together to celebrate fine food and drink, comfort and community. You could say it’s a lot like Cheers, that TV Land Boston bar where everyone knows your name. “I know and hug about 70 percent of the people that walk in,’ laughs Manager Abbie Steffens. The breathtaking wooden bar area doesn’t look much like Cheers, but it certainly beckons you to pull up a chair for a long, lingering, wicked fun-filled evening.

They had no doubts, and knew they were up for the high-stakes challenge of bringing their A game to downtown, front and center. In just a short time The Franklin, as the new kid on the block, has carved its way into being a downtown favorite hotspot—carved quite literally, as they boast their own in-house butcher and are already locally renowned for exceptional charcuterie. To enjoy a mouthwatering meat and cheese plate, paired splendidly with a robust bottle of wine, all handpicked by sommelier Amanda is an event to remember, all by itself.
From its inception, The Franklin had a lot to live up to, coming along as the second child to a cherished, award-winning and respected big sister Trattoria Stella, a restaurant that’s revered as a cuisine celebrity. Talk about sibling rivalry. The entire town watched the building evolve on the corner of Cass and Front streets, brick by brick, and immensely anticipated the grand unveiling just two short years ago. But savvy owners Executive Chef Myles
To experience just “High Spirits” at The Franklin is a momentous occasion, as the extensive cocktail menu so aptly states: Pick your Poison! Shake up the norm, step out of your box and let their bartenders (mixologists) work their magic. All of the libations are made from scratch, from the freshest juices and a unique mix of ingredients, never skimping on the pours. Many of the liquors are small batch from all around the globe and are creatively listed on the menu. We are not just drinking here, people—this is a whole new evolution of savoring, partaking, and tempting one’s sipping palate. You absolutely must try The Agripolitan. It’s delightfully delectable, and
it arrives in a bottle flask enough for two people (only if you are good at sharing, and I’m not!). During the summer, revel in a fresh carafe of house-made margaritas on the second floor outdoor patio; it’s the perfect place to sit and sip, overlooking the hustle and bustle of the town below. The wine list is cleverly disguised for the novice or the true professional wino. With inventive headers on short lists such as “If you like Pinot Noir,” “If you Like Pinot Grigio,” it actually opens up your wine world to a whole new realm by suggesting an unfamiliar type. Based on your “likes” taste, it entices you to give the new a whirl. The Franklins’ entire ambiance is friendship and frolic. The showcase bar is chockablock full of smiling faces. Framed from behind is the vintage 120-year-old stately wooden back bar, brought to life again after being rescued from resting in a Marquette barn. (Oh, the many stories that could tell.) It adds character and charm with an Old World familiar atmosphere. Laid-back laughter and solidarity also domineer the common bar table that seats 20 of your closest friends. The bar’s massive length is a four-foot-wide cottonwood trunk that rests on three gigantic barrels and was actually fashioned after the wildly popular table at Trattoria Stella’s bar. of your dining experience. And if we were to have to name it, we are told the cuisine is New American. “Myles’ menu is very much a re-take on American Classics. We 100 percent want to be able to stand behind our food. Everything is the best, no corners are cut, and almost everything is made from scratch,” explains Abbie. How does Myles pull off this tall order of overseeing two successful and very different restaurants? “I think he has a twin that no one knows about!” jokes Abbie. But seriously, it speaks praise to Myles’ mentoring of sous chefs and loyal kitchen 28

That fine fare includes prime choice cuts of Angus Hanger Steak, Angus Filet Mignon, Angus Ribeye and Veal Medallions. All are served with rosemary honey-glazed carrots,
ginger beer-battered onion rings, and three special sauces, namely jalapeno, Vidalia onion and caper relish, green peppercorn and cognac cream, and a five-hour sauce. You must try the classics with a twist like Macaroni and Cheese with baked garganelli, pulled slow-cooked smoked duck
leg, green onions, cheese bĂŠchamel and panko breadcrumbs. Even a simple half roasted chicken is made spectacular (We devoured the photo shoot dish; trust us, it was divine!), brined and roasted, with buttermilk-soaked ciabatta and wild rice, roasted shallots, pistachios and a parsley and lemon jus. You will never eat just mediocre chicken again. Mom always told you to eat your veggies, and here they taste out of this world with flavor and unique pairings. Think about Pan-Seared Sweet Potatoes with roasted red peppers and a maple orange curry
glaze, or turnips mashed with Gorgonzola cheese, crisp shiitake mushrooms and brown butter. Cauliflower even gets fancy, roasted with garlic, cilantro and candied peanuts. To perfectly accompany the entrees is scrumptious bread, pretzels and desserts that are in-house freshly baked, and are oh, so heavenly! For a small sampling of what The Franklin has to offer in its entire glory, make a date to get happy at a Franklin Happy Hour. From 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, they offer seven special cocktails for $5 each, and Imperial Pints that are a 20-ounce pour, not
the industry standard of 16 ounces. And to complement the drinks is a marvelous menu that includes veggies, charcuterie, sliders and more priced just $4 to $6. hat happens when a few die-hard sailors with a true love of the water sit around their yacht club and realize there are no kids learning to sail? In the case of the humble beginnings of Traverse Area Community Sailing (TACS), back in 1994 they launched a small summer camp to shift the tide. And in doing so they passed along the nautical legacy of sailing to thirty-four 12- to 16-year-old boys and girls who experienced life-changing lessons in a two-week, hands-on sailing school with borrowed boats and an entire staff of volunteers.

Located in Hull Park on the Boardman River, the bare bones TACS offices and storage that first summer were housed in a broken-down Grand Rapids City bus that had been towed in. They had no electricity, and the only bathroom was a port-o-potty. To prepare for the next summer of sailing, eager volunteers were “all hands on deck” in a fellow yacht club member’s pole barn. The mission at hand was to construct 20 Optimist Pram Dinghies, financed by local businesses sponsored by the Traverse City Optimist Club. Once built and ready to launch, these dinghies opened enrollment to include 8to 12-year-old youngsters and allowed TACS to present a full summer schedule of five twoweek camp sessions. So the modest inception of Traverse Area Community Sailing started out with one simple goal: Create opportunities to teach kids to have fun in a safe environment on the water. “Because we are a region surrounded by water, what better way to get on the water than in a sailboat,” says Camp Director and US Sailing Outstanding Director Award-winner Ben Ferris. The kids are at one with nature, having fun, experiencing a true independence like no other while learning to respect the wind’s magnificent power. You cannot direct the wind, but you can adjust your sails; this lesson 32

instinctively instills a lifelong love of the water. Sailing is a forever sport for the young and old, and growing up in Northern Michigan, as a parent raising our children here, it’s a must. “The growth was just so unexpected. I started out thinking that I would do this for a few summers, and this will be my twentieth. I see kids come in at the start so meek and mild, and I literally watch them grow. They gain a whole new sense of independence; it’s just so rewarding to be a part of,” says Ben. Today, 300 kids participate in the summer program, with certified instructors at a 1-to-7 ratio. And since inception, the programs have instructed more than 4000 yoRiding the wave of the success of the younger sailors, and wholeheartedly having nurtured the “learn to sail” program, TACS naturally progressed, expanding the program to an advanced level for older students.

Spearheaded by Board members Jim Sorbie and Sally Rivard, TACS added a high school racing team, which evolved rapidly to support serious competitors who travel all the way to Chicago and Gross Pointe to compete. As the warmer months come, pass by the Grand Traverse Yacht Club or gaze out at the water while dining at Apache Trout Grill on any given day, and you’re likely to see the teenage captains at the helm of their Lasers. You may even see one of the many regattas they host, including summer’s prestigious Chubb US Junior Championships - a US Sailing National Championship. “The programs have grown in phases and have focused on people’s passions, most all of the people who volunteer their free time are retired or close to retired, and the next thing to grow was Adult Sailing,” explains Ben. All born out of the joy of just being on the water, today TACS employs five instructors, a camp director and racing coach, all US Sailing-certified. Students have such a wide range of options for sailing based on their skill level from beginner to expert, from daysailor to avid racer, from small boat to keel boat, and from training for youngsters to training for adults.

From Coast to Coast
Design Trends… It was very fun for me to work with the Overbeek’s on their new home and Gretchen was on the cutting edge of a design trend that has made its way here to Northern Michigan. Clean, modern design incorporating natural, rustic elements has been a way of design in the Pacific Northwest for quite some time. Well, we live on the West Coast as well (Lake Michigan of course) and have many of the same life style desires that are found in cities like Seattle and Portland. We think of small, but quality and detailed architecture for our homes. Clean lines, volume in ceiling heights off set with lighter colors and contrast in textures and materials. Warm wood cabinetry and darker metals complete the look.
The East Coast influence has been very strong in design the last couple years as well. Looking at our year end photography, white kitchens really ruled the landscape last year. Not just white cabinetry, but white counters, backsplashes, walls and ceilings. A change we are seeing to that look this year is adding a pop of color. Teal and Orange are headliners as accent pieces. Backsplashes in geometric patterns and bright color or islands in a bright tone are ways of mixing it up and adding a bit of your own personality. 46

Wood plays a part in this style of design as well, with perhaps a butcher block island top, wood flooring and perhaps some beams on the ceiling. While we are at heart Midwesterners, in design today, it is our other coastlines that seem to be the heavy influencers. As always, our own “spin” begins to emerge and keeps me looking forward to the next project that is designed for you.

T
he journey that leads to custom building a dream home in Northern Michigan is sometimes a familiar one. You holiday here as a kid and treasured memories of magical summers spent are forever etched, never to be duplicated anywhere else. For Jim and Gretchen Overbeek, it was exactly like this. Jim has vacationed here his entire life. When he was young, it was at a cherished place named Bakers Acres on the shores of East Grand Traverse Bay, where today the Tamarack Lodge resides. The Grand Rapids natives even got their feet wet, owning a condo at Tamarack before diving “all in.” The timing for building their dream home came when Jim retired, and Gretchen was offered a position at Hagerty. That’s when their plan to migrate north began full-steam ahead. “We were open to anything. We looked at East and West Bay, The Commons and even the Smith Haughey Rice Building,” recalls Gretchen.

“But our two main criteria were it had to have a view, and needed to be close to town,” says Jim. This was an important factor. They were moving from a log home on the Pere Marquette River in an extremely rural area, where they had commuted 85 miles into Grand Rapids. “It’s a beautiful area if you hunt or fish, and I love to fly fish, so it was perfect for me,” laughs Jim. Their exploration eventually led them to the ideal lot with a spectacular view of West Bay, and their adventure began. “This is the first house I have ever built, and I loved the process,” says Gretchen. They were lucky right from the beginning to be introduced by a friend of a friend to Mike Collings and his terrific team from Mac Custom Homes. “I knew I liked him as soon as I met him because he wore cowboy boots, and I have a big collection of them,” Jim fondly recalls. “He was such a quiet thinker. He didn’t brag and would just pull these things out. There were times I would be on the phone with him and think the call dropped, but he was on the other end, thinking, coming up with a unique solution to whatever the problem was,” adds Jim. If it weren’t for Mike’s vast experience, their incredible view would have been entirely blocked by the massive fireplace on the plans and the home’s original placing. They had bought the property in winter and the plot lines had been laid out incorrectly. Mike caught this “Oh, No” moment and rotated the house accordingly, completely diverting the “almost disaster.” “He just connected with us. He laid it all out for us step by step, explaining every detail along the way. I have built homes before, and I was just thrown everything all at once and it’s overwhelming. If you were to peel back the layers of paint to the bare walls and floors, Mike’s drawings in black Sharpie are everywhere,” explains Jim. “The entire team was amazing, even their sub-contractors were awesome people. Things were extremely consistent. They seamlessly worked alongside Angela from Kitchen Choreography; she is so great and could convey what we couldn’t put into words. She understands “builders’ talk” and I would ask her, ‘We’re winning right?’ meaning I was getting what I wanted, design-wise, and she would say, ‘Yes, we’re winning!’” laughs Gretchen. Because Jim and Gretchen were coming from a log home, they wanted to have a completely different style, taking full advantage of all the views with lots of light flooding in.
“Log homes tend to be dark. We wanted lots of light and an open-concept design because we love to entertain,” says Gretchen. The climactic finished result of staying true with clean lines, but not too stark, is a striking kitchen and open living area that oozes simple, elegant chic. It’s an ultramodern feel, yet warmly accented with rich rustic elements of Natural Stone and Cherrywood, contrasted with Black Industrial Metal. The three dominant components flow beautifully, and dramatically complement the entire space—all the way to the contemporary staircase railing that Mike helped custom design.

“Angela helped me with it all coming together, too. She helped me pick colors and always had her samples so I could envision everything. She sourced the fireplace, and I had this idea I wanted a steel backsplash, and she found this porcelain tile.
When we had a house tour no one believed it was tile, they all had to touch it,” recalls Gretchen. The dazzling kitchen isn’t just for show. “I love to cook, and I love that I can stand here and see that view. A perfect Sunday is to spend four hours in the kitchen,” says Gretchen.

“And I love to eat,” laughs Jim. That love of cooking even expands outside the kitchen. A dedicated, enclosed cooking deck houses the outdoor grill that stays fired up all winter long. The Overbeeks’ love of entertaining and owning the ideal home that can double as a Bed and Breakfast for friends and family has become just that!
“We built the house with an unfinished basement, and we were thinking we’d have an exercise room or maybe a wine cellar? Instead we are having guests,” laughs Jim. In a great homage to Mike Collings, the founder of Mac Custom Homes who sadly passed away last year, Jim and Gretchen are working with Mac’s team to complete their basement project. “It’s a great legacy he left. This next phase of our house has been just as easy, working with all the same people and having a wonderful experience all over again,” say Gretchen and Jim. That space already has reservations for the summer. It’s fully booked with family hitting the beach, and a nephew who skateboards on their driveway. The Main Event will be the National Cherry Festival’s front seat view of the Blue Angels flying right by the house, ending with dazzling fireworks. I think we can all attest that their decision to move from a log home on the Pere Marquette River to building a dream home overlooking stellar crystal blue views of the West Bay in the cherry capital of the world was a good one. "Purple Maze" What we feel and what we at first see through our camera lens often bear little similarity. Identifying feelings causes me to realize I need to haul out my largest telephoto lens to match the painterly, impressionistic feeling I am getting from this tulip garden in downtown Holland. Now all I have to do is organize my composition and focus only on my chosen star tulip so the viewers of my finished image will easily make their way through the maze of flowers in front to the one on which I want them to focus their attention.
