— LIFE’S GRAND ADVENTURE —
A NEW HOME WITH ROOM TO ROAM Finding what’s right for the next phase in life
“My work takes me all over the country & we could live anywhere. But this is exactly where we want to be.”
The Fierbergs have purchased, sold or refinanced at least 6 properties in the past 13 years.
Last purchase: “This is a wonderful dream for our family.”
25
acre horse farm When Doug and Janine Fierberg became empty nesters, they decided to revisit what their next move should be. They wanted a place that would sustain them during the long winters and that would be a wonderful, welcoming home for their daughters. They found exactly that: A 25-acre horse farm, just five miles from downtown Traverse City. With West Shore Bank’s help, the property quickly became theirs. Now visitors encounter 8 elegant horses. Janine rides daily. Their daughters are visiting more often and, despite not growing up there, consider it their true home. The contentment is clear in Doug’s voice when he shares that this has been everything they hoped for—and more. West Shore Bank. For Life’s Grand Adventure.
“Others promised white glove treatment. I just wanted a truly responsive bank.” - Doug Fierberg
Other banks told Doug they wanted to help make this deal happen, but Doug said they were slow to respond and noncommittal about the outcome. ‘Some lenders make promises,’ he said. ‘West Shore Bank makes dreams come true.’ When he raves about our service as if it’s something special, it’s somewhat surprising to me, because this is just what comes naturally to our team— it’s what we do for all of our clients. MEET
Heidi Thompson
Financial Advisor at Prout Financial Design 1040 E. Front Street, Traverse City, MI 49686 Ph. 231.947.3992 | www.proutfinancialdesign.com
What makes you a “mover and shaker” in the financial industry? I never considered myself a “mover and shaker” in the traditional sense. Rather, I would consider myself as someone with a quiet, persistent strength. Most of my clients are that way too. I had to step out of my comfort zone, which helped me discover how much I loved being an advisor. I do like the Beatles song, “Twist and Shout!” Does that count? What brought you back to Northern Michigan? My family has been here since the late 1800s. My great-grandfather, Parm Gilbert, preserved Gilbert Park at Long Lake, the Gilbert Lodge at Twin Lakes Park and the Gilbert Pines Boy Scout Camp. We came here every summer to the family cottage on Long Lake (which had no shower or bathtub; we used the lake!). Then when I became a single mom, I decided it was best to raise my daughters here near family and a supportive community. It helps that the cottage is now a house, with both an indoor shower and bathtub. What sets you apart as an advisor? My life story. I’m a single mom of three daughters who had to recreate a life for us. This included changing location, career and schools. I started to plan for retirement from square zero – meaning – from nothing. I can empathize with where others are coming from. What are you creating? Meeting with people helped me see what was missing in meetings – especially for women. Female clients would often call me after appointments and ask for clarification of terms and decisions made. That insight helped Shea Petaja (our CXO) and I create an event we named “Flourish” – an investment strategy forum for women only. We are passionate about empowering women to make informed financial decisions. Our next forum is on June 6 at the Traverse City Country Club. It’s open to the public and there is no cost, but you must reserve your seat. What are you the proudest of? My daughters! My oldest is graduating from law school to help free those in human trafficking situations. My middle child is beginning her career as a labor and delivery nurse. My youngest is a senior in high school next year and is a brilliant writer, among other things.

DriveShare by Hagerty www.driveshare.com
Drive in Style
We live in a town that loves cars! Hagerty, one of Traverse City’s largest employers, has always focused on celebrating cars and now they have a new addition to their car-loving family, “DriveShare by Hagerty.” DriveShare is a premiere peer-to-peer car-sharing service that puts you behind the wheel of cars you’ve always wanted to drive. Think of it as “the Airbnb of cool cars.” A special car makes any experience more memorable, so visitors to Traverse City (or to nearly anywhere in the U.S.) can now make everything from modern sports cars to all-time classics (depending on local availability) part of their adventure. Car owners love DriveShare, too. By listing their cars on DriveShare, they can make a bit of cash to defray the cost of maintaining their pride and joy. They can even offer chauffeured rentals and special event rentals to give just the right touch to weddings, photo shoots, video productions and more. Of course, as a part of Hagerty corporation, safety is of top concern, so every rental from DriveShare includes a comprehensive insurance policy, flatbed roadside assistance, and verification of renters’ driving history.

www.forrestaprivatechef.com Similar to an artist studio for painters or sculptors, Forrest, A Food Studio and Private Chef is an inspiring new space where culinary masterpieces are created. Forrest’s owners, husband and wife team Forrest and Nicole Moline, are private chefs with a vision. They have been providing individualized cooking experiences for years and are eager to finally have a home base to share with the community. Opening summer 2019, the space will be used as a gourmet multi-use kitchen that is open to the public for events including hands-on cooking classes, dynamic pop-up dinners, and event space rental for small groups. The culinary duo is driven by a purpose: to engage with the community on multiple levels to help create memorable food experiences. “Being a private chef keeps me on my toes to invent new ways to make flavorful food, while following my clients’ food preferences, dietary restrictions and/ or food allergies,” says Forrest Moline. “Most chefs in restaurants are behind closed kitchen doors, and guests rarely interact with them on any level. Our service is much different, offering a very interactive food experience through conversation, demonstration and observation.”
Neighborhood Cafe Rose and Fern Cafe & Stocklist Coffee Company 910 E. Eighth Street, Traverse City www.roseandferncafe.com Fresh food and thoughtful ingredients makes Rose and Fern Cafe a hot spot for breakfast and lunch. This neighborhood cafe features simple dishes that are well flavored and spiced to perfection. Owner Becky Tranchell opened the cafe in January 2019 with a focus on truly local ingredients. All of the cafe’s produce comes from Lakeview Hills Farm and Second Spring Farms. Their meat is entirely Michigan raised and produced, and the pork comes from Louie’s Meats on Cass Street in Traverse City. The space also features a full espresso bar through the Stocklist Coffee Company, where owner Jeff Brown roasts in house coffee and creates homemade syrups.

Bowers Harbor Vineyards
2896 Bowers Harbor Road, Traverse City www.bowersharbor.com www.annrobinsonfineart.com For those seeking summer splendor, Bowers Harbor Vineyards has the best of the season: outdoor wine tasting, patio seating, dining events, and the warm, genuine atmosphere of a family run winery. The Old Mission Peninsula staple ramps up their already fabulous reputation with new vintages, unique events, and views that make visitors think they’re in the lush countryside of Europe. The tasting room features an original, stunning mural by local artist Ann Robinson, who completed it over a seven month stretch. The mural is a refreshing look at the many awards that the winery has won over the last years, with odes to the beloved vineyards dogs, all poised on a colorful background of the sand and beach grass. Ann and her husband Rod are Wine Club members and devoted fans of the winery, and Ann’s art was the winner of the first Lighthouse Wine Label competition in 2016.

Bowers Harbor delivers on extraordinary events, including the epic Dining in the Vines dinners. With fantastic variations of the classic, including Fustini’s, seafood, vegetarian, and farm-to-table, there are options for everyone to be dazzled. Each dinner offers perfectly paired wines with meal courses from professional chefs, as guests sit among the rows of vines and enjoy an elevated, sophisticated picnic. Several tour options allow a deeper look at the winery’s history and the varietals of grapes that grow best in our micro-climate. Receive a fun viticulture education as you stroll through the beautifully landscaped estate while holding a glass of Traditional Méthode Champenoise Sparkling wine. Can you spit a pit? Chances are, if you live in or have visited the Cherry Capital of the world, you know how to. In honor of this grand tradition, The Traverse City Pit Spitters are coming to town! The new local baseball team name was selected from thousands of fan entries last fall. The team’s 2019 inaugural season starts at 7pm on Tuesday, May 28th with a home game against the Green Bay Booyah. The Pit Spitters are part of the Northwoods League, comprised of elite college players who play from the end of May through mid-August. Last fall, a group of investors led by the West Michigan Whitecaps purchased the stadium and started up the new franchise. Expect to see exciting new additions at the stadium, including an exclusive Moomer’s ice cream flavor and birthday packages that allow the special birthday person to throw out the first pitch in celebration of their big day. We are looking forward to cheering on our hometown Pit Spitters all summer long!

From Down Dog to Bottoms Up Yoga in the Vines www.yogainthevinestc.com Yoga in the Vines blends gentle vineyard yoga with Northern Michigan’s best wines. After noticing that wineries in Napa Valley were hosting yoga classes, Becky Kalajian had an epiphany. “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, that would be perfect here,’” said the yoga teacher, who owns Yoga in the Vines. “People coming to Northern Michigan are craving those kinds of experiences.” For $35, guests enjoy gentle, all-level yoga outside in the vineyard, then head to the tasting room for a deluxe wine tasting. Held on Sundays in July and August at Black Star Farms in Suttons Bay and Mari Vineyards on Old Mission Peninsula, respectively, Yoga in the Vines has become a must-do for those seeking an authentic connection to the outdoors. “Yoga in the Vines has been a wonderful opportunity to help people experience the vineyards in a new, individual, and holistic way,” said Jenna Veiga, marketing and events manager for Mari Vineyards. “It fosters a very spiritual and intimate connection with our vineyards that can’t be found anywhere else.” Can’t make it to the vines on Sunday mornings? Groups of five or more can schedule a private session!

Wanderlust
Wanderlust: a strong desire to travel and explore the world. We all have it within us: that urge to wander, to seek, to escape. This type of experience is not confined by any single look, yet there is a certain style that encompasses that free and fabulous feeling. It is floral prints, natural fibers, and flowy fabrics on a hot summer day. Find it in a fierce hat that shields the sun while simultaneously exuding a simple confidence. It is a handmade artisan anklet or a pair of statement earrings. Explore your inner wanderlust this summer, and remember, not all those who wander are lost!

BRINGING BACK THE BOARDMAN:
When most people think of Northern Michigan, they only envision the Great Lakes, yet our region is overflowing with beautiful rivers, lakes, and streams, each with a charm of their own. Stretching over 160 miles, the incredible Boardman River is a source of life, energy, and recreation. The restoration of the river began over fifteen years ago, with an unheard of level of support from the community, Grand Traverse Band Tribal Council, government agencies, nonprofits and more. The Boardman River Dams Ecosystem Restoration Project is a product of a unique, all-stakeholder engagement and facilitation approach. Everyone’s input formed the decisions made and paved the way for a massive revitalization, making it one of the most comprehensive dam removal and restoration projects in Michigan’s history. The removal of three dams, and the modifications of a fourth, on the Boardman River represent a cohesive approach to reconnecting this high-quality stream to Lake Michigan. One hundred years of negative impacts from aging and deteriorating man-made infrastructure have been reversed, opening up the free-flowing, cold-water stream and restoring hundreds of acres of wetland and upland habitat. The hands of time have been turned back, by once again connecting the river with the waters of Grand Traverse Bay.

in looking at a river as a product of its own merit,” says Frank Dituri, the Director of Public Services for the City of Traverse City. “We like to think, ‘Ask not what your river can do for you; ask what you can do for your river!’” With this mindset, a plan was born to address the many changes that the river needed to both survive and thrive. “It’s important to recognize that so many milestones have been hit: we’ve removed many of the dams, and there are 162 miles of river open and flowing,” explains Brett Fessell, a River Restoration Ecologist for the Natural Resources Department for the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. “When we’re asked why the Tribal Council became involved, the same answer echoes: because it’s the right thing to do.”

A river of this quality is a globally rare resource and a priceless community asset. It is constantly changing and evolving, while providing continuous life for innumerable species and inter-related ecological systems. The reach of the river is immense and awing. There are a total of 287-square miles in the watershed, delivering one-third of the water volume of Grand Traverse Bay in Traverse City, and draining 183,680 acres of land. Large wood structures are recessed into this streambank that will become an outside bend; log piles are driven deep into the stream bottom and other logs are attached to them.

are endless. Kayaking, paddling, hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, camping, and photography are all enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. An estimated two million user days are logged on the river annually for recreation purposes. Many of these visitors come to the river to fish, since the river is one of the top ten trout streams in Michigan. For those less inclined to cast a line, fantastic pub paddle adventures on the river offer local beers and a memorable experience.

One popular touring company is The River Outfitters, which offers kayaking, rentals, trips, interpretive tours, and more. The business has catered to tourists and locals for almost a decade, and has a corporate ethic of sustainable, recreational opportunities. “The Boardman River water quality is so amazing that it’s considered a Blue River Stream, which speaks to its high level of biodiversity,” says Tawny Hammond, who is a co-owner and manager. “There are otters, mink, white egrets, trout, and the list goes on. The famous writer Ernest Hemingway even fished in its waters. We refuse to compromise the river, and we make sure that our guests treat it with respect. Our goal is to turn people into ambassadors and supporters of our beloved natural resource.” The touring opportunities let people escape their plugged-in lifestyle and experience a Traverse City far different than cherries, wine, and beer. Tawny declares, “We offer an opportunity to get in touch with nature, and we are in the business of creating joy and happiness through that!”

Fun Adventures
Enjoy the beauty of the Boardman with paddling, fishing, hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, hunting, camping, and photography. Tracts of state land along with the Brown Bridge Quiet Area and Grand Traverse County Nature Education Reserve offer upland opportunities for public access along the river.
Surrounding trails continue to be reinvigorated.
The Boardman Lake Trail Loop Project received $600,000 in funding from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grants (MNRTF) in 2018, approved by Michigan legislators. Half of that funding went towards developing trails, and the other half went towards the Medalie Park along the trail. MNRTF grants come from revenues generated from oil and natural gas funds, and since 1976, have provided over $1.1 billion in funding to all of Michigan’s 83 counties. The Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation Trails Inc. also offers many events, volunteer opportunities, and programs through their system of area paths. Since 2002, 3.5 miles of trail have been completed, with 1.8 miles remaining, with nearlycompleted engineering. The project itself is a great advancement for recreation in Traverse City, where in the past, many visitors have not been able to explore the complete Boardman Lake like they will soon.

Those involved remain diligent about the continued preservation of the river and the land surrounding it. As stewards of the natural resource, a high level of care must be maintained to ensure the river’s health. “We perceive the natural world as family,” Fessell describes. “More and more there seems to be a paradigm shift to treat the natural world, like the river, as lovingly as you would treat a member of your own family. If your grandmother was sick, you’d drop everything to be there and get her better, and that’s what we’ve done for the Boardman.”

ummer is finally here! After so many cold winter days, we all look forward to sunshine, warmth and plenty of outdoor activities; making a new outdoor kitchen the perfect home addition for spring and summer entertaining. Beauty is important, but function should be the first consideration when planning your outdoor entertainment space. Key components are:
summer chillin’ & grillin’
#1 The grill, of course! Weber is still the most popular brand, but there are many others on the market. If your grill is going to be built into cabinetry or a structure you want to ensure that you are selecting a high-quality model that will last for many years. Wolf offers high quality grills in many sizes to accommodate any outdoor kitchen design. Take the time to research some of the additional features that you might like so they can be planned for in your design. For example, if you choose a rotisserie feature, power will be required to run the motor. #2 Outdoor refrigeration. Whether it is for additional beverage storage or to house food supplies, a double drawer unit is a convenience that I highly recommend. It will be much more effective than a standard beverage cooler. #3 Last, but not least, is a sink. Let’s admit it, most grill masters are pretty messy, with BBQ sauce going everywhere. The ability to clean up without having to haul soapy water from the house is a huge convenience. Of course, there are always plenty of extras! Popular items are wood fired pizza ovens, ice makers, and the latest innovations such as the Big Green Egg charcoal grill. Do your homework when designing your outdoor kitchen to make sure that you have everything your need for perfect barbecues. Once you have your design down, material selection is pretty standard, with wood and stone being the most popular. Stainless cabinetry will withstand Northern

Michigan elements and can be warmed up with teak or mahogany door inserts. Make sure that your countertop material can withstand our freezing temperatures as not all granite material is dense enough and will absorb water, potentially causing freezing and cracking. Hopefully, this will set you up for grilling success and make your next bbq super memorable. Happy Grilling!

“HOME ON A LAKE, NOT A LAKE HOME,” was Pam and Bob Granata’s vision for their Walloon Lake vacation house. Find pops of color throughout this refreshing new build that is modern, inviting, and bright.
Known for its magnificent aqua colors, Walloon Lake’s natural elements are reflected in the selections throughout the home. The house was designed by Nick White of N.J. White Associates, and built by Matt Stuck, owner of Conquest Builders. Cynthia Evans, of Cynthia Evans Interiors, shaped the interior look. The exterior elements were designed by Landscape Architect Maureen Parker of Common Ground. A beautiful shade of blue was selected for the exterior home to reflect the color of the sky, a theme that is carried throughout the project.

THE HOME’S INTERIOR STYLE
is a distinctive collaboration between its owner, Pam Granata, and her interior designer, Cynthia Evans. The duo had a goal of creating a functional and beautiful space that reflected the Granata’s personality, an aspect that shines through in the finished product. Evans explained, “I had worked with the Granata’s on several of their homes. We have a great collaborative relationship and share an aesthetic personality.” Delightful interiors make the atmosphere both fun and sophisticated. The color story began with a stunning painting Evans found at the Michigan Design Center. This gorgeous work of art can be found in a place of honor in the foyer. Find shades of pink, blue, and green pulled from the painting placed throughout the home. “It was important that we balance clean lines and traditional furniture with patterns and vibrant colors that reflected Pam’s sunny personality,” explains Evans. Upon entering, all eyes are drawn to the great room, which is styled with custom furnishings.

Pam has an extensive collection of MacKenzie-Childs pieces displayed on a bookshelf between the kitchen and the foyer.
