First official boat ride of the season, following the TC Tritons High School rowing team, on the Boardman Lake.

W

e were ready for tropical breaks and excited to ring in spring. Then the ginormous ‘spring’ snowstorm hit on April 14th, pummeling us back into the throws of a winter tundra. We demanded answers from Mother Nature: “What the heck! Are you kidding? Snow days in April?” Oh, who am I kidding, I may have uttered a stronger (four-letter) word. Full disclosure, I am the daughter and granddaughter of authentic English sailors, so I come by colorful words quite naturally. Don’t judge; I know you were right there with me. My point being, here at Baylife headquarters, we were dutifully working away, wishing for sun, calling golf courses, boat showrooms and waterfront restaurants to prepare this issue. I reminded them that it’s time to wake up! Summer will soon be here. When warmer weather came, just a few days of sunny blue sky and spring fever hit. We were thrilled to officially kick off our summer boat season on April 24th aboard Tom Salon’s boat. Cruising on the Boardman River, we watched girls high school rowing. It was invigorating to be back on the water. But oh my gosh, it was bloody freezing, in fact, the jacket I am wearing in the picture to the right sports my Boyne Mountain ski pass. We loved being out on the boat. Lucky for us, it’s just another fun day at work, doing research and a photo shoot as we were following the TC Tritons rowing squad. What an eye-opening voyage. These teenage girls are amazing athletes. As I wished I had brought more layers, the more they rowed, the more layers they ripped off. I couldn’t fathom the number of calories burned as they rowed, rowed and rowed some more. This is just the second season the Traverse City Tritons are calling the Boardman River home base. In just a few weeks, they will make a big splash as they set up shop at Medalie Park. It will become a familiar sight to see these boats going up and down the Boardman, and after you read our fun feature, you will have wonderful insight and respect for the popular sport.

Our next adventure, all in the name of research, found us on a road trip to Walloon Lake Inn. What a treat! We were wined and dined in style by the chef, who pulled out all the stops. It was grand. Indeed, we may have gained just a few pounds on the seven-course dinner. We specifically visited for the cuisine and to experience the ambiance of the inn, but we soon discovered the treasure of the charming village on the edge of Walloon Lake. It is truly a gem with a story all of its own, rescued from the brink of disaster by a developer who spent his boyhood summers on the lake. For one day this summer, check it out, it is worth the drive. Boating is still a continuous theme as we feature Liz Carney, our mover and shaker in this issue. Her family’s happy place is anywhere on the water. She is the owner of Grand Bay Marine in Charlevoix. Her Traverse City store is under construction of a 30-boat showroom, all together under one roof, for all seasons. We were excited to find out her stores make the top-10 list of rankings in world boat sales. Still looking out across the water, we ventured to the shores of Glen Lake. Builder Eric Render shares the story of his clients, the Beauregard family, who dreamed of building a Nantucket-inspired home. It is a beauty, and the photography is dazzling. As we daydream of another magical summer, we look to the water. We can’t wait for boat launch day. Let’s get ready to get wet! We will see you out on the bay.

Big Brother Big Sisters of Northern Michigan WINE AUCTION EVENT | CITY OPERA HOUSE APRIL 14, 2018 A rare spring snowstorm didn’t sway people away from coming out to raise money for at-risk children that need mentors. The inaugural BIGS Wine Auction was a three-day wine lover extravaganza. The evening auction was the main event and spectacular highlight. Attendees even danced to live Frank Sinatra tunes. It all added up to a memorable weekend for such a wonderful cause.

What is the secret to your success? “My secret is simple…I am surrounded by the very best team of co-workers in the world! They understand going above and beyond to exceed our customers’ expectations and to give our customers an experience that will change their lives.” Your TC Store is in the middle of a huge expansion. Tell us a little about it? “We will soon enjoy the largest indoor showroom in the area, able to show more than 30 boats inside year-round. We are so excited; our customers will be able to learn and become educated under one roof.” You have been in business over 20 years, what is the short version of how you got into selling boats? “I am a CPA by trade. I took a leave of absence to stay home with my 3 little girls. (Today we have 4 daughters and one son).

“We will soon enjoy the largest indoor showroom in the area, able to show more than 30 boats inside year-round.” Shortly after staying home, a marine dealer in our town offered me a part time position, which I took. I fell in love with the industry, and I already absolutely LOVED boating. In 1997 I opened our store in Traverse City.” You are an accomplished businesswoman, an adoring wife, mother and grandmother, how do you juggle all this? “By the grace of God….and an amazing husband of almost 36 years.” Are there any words of wisdom that you live by? “Philippians 4:13…I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

Tell us one thing that would surprise us about you? “That I really am a nice person. I think having been a woman in a man’s industry has led people to think that I am really tough or mean. I am aggressive and like to get things done, but that doesn’t mean I’m not nice.” What is one thing on your bucket list you have checked off? “I always wanted to go under the Mackinaw Island bridge on a boat that my husband and I were navigating. I’ve now done this twice and it’s soooooo cool! There is nothing like being on the great lakes and cruising under the Mighty Mac!”

Carol is opening a store in the brand-new buildings on Park St., Metal Arts & Home Décor, and we asked Carol, the who, what, when and why questions. “We were in Georgia, visiting family and we came across this local artist from the Philippines, he’s been creating these beautiful pieces of metal art for 21 years.” Carol thought this was something different to bring to Traverse City. “There will be something for everyone with all price points, for the first apartment to a grand home,” explains Carol. The artist is also making custom art focused on Northern Michigan, and statement pieces like unique handmade fireplace sets. Why is she venturing into her own business now? “My kids are grown, my son is in the Marines, and my daughter is in cosmetology school. A Good Duo Hagerty Vice President of Brand Strategy, Soon Hagerty and Chef Tony Vu have teamed up to open a Vietnamese Restaurant, The Good Bowl, on Front St. We got to chat with them both as they invited us in during construction. Tell us about Vietnamese food?

Tell us some family history?

Soon: “I find there are 2 types of people; Some can’t wait to eat great Vietnamese food, or they are curious about it. The Southern Signature dish is Pho noodles, most Americans were only exposed to the south, the north, Hanoi has very different flavors. I just travelled there in November, to take it all in.”

Tony: “My family is from Saigon and just celebrated 43 years of being here. They were like the hipster refugees coming over on a plane looking very dapper. (he shares a picture).

Tony: “We are going to explode some taste buds around here! At first, we plan to have a nicely curated menu of classic Vietnamese dishes, and then we will start digging deeper!” Tell us about The Good Bowl? Soon: “It will be Fast/Casual, for lunch we will be catering to locals. In and out in 45 minutes, so you are not at the beckon call of a server. We will also have a dinner service. For every bowl of noodles, a dollar will go to a charity. That’s why it’s called the Good Bowl. There will be seating, a noodle bar, and a Home Goods area. We will have beautiful noodle bowls and chopsticks for sale, (friend, Kristy Kurjan’s idea). A dollar will also be donated from those too. Three chalk boards will show the 3 charities to choose from. The right-hand wall will celebrate Vietnamese Culture, with beautiful pieces of art I found in Hanoi and Saigon. Other pieces I bought from Vietnamese artists.” How long have you been thinking about owning a restaurant?

Soon: (laughing) We were also from Saigon, but so different. It was 1975, I was almost 5, my mom had seven kids, and was seven months pregnant, we were the boat people.” How did you get into cooking? Tony: “I have officially only been a chef for 6 years, but I grew up in family restaurants. For three years I travelled to a lot of different countries, I really started to understand the true universal power of food. When I went to Vietnam, I met street cooks and chefs that took me in and mentored me, it was a weird magical path. On a whim back in Flint I bought a food truck, so every winter I would go back to Vietnam, and further learn from the chefs and street cooks. Then I moved to the Flint farmers market opening MaMang.” How can you run both places? Tony: “We have been there for three years and I have an awesome crew, I plan to be up here all summer. The flavors are light and clean and fresh especially the spring rolls, I can totally see people pick up a take-out order for their boat!” Soon: “I am obsessed with the Bánh mì sandwich.”

Soon: “Since I was twelve! I’ve always day dreamed about it. I love to cook, I’m not a chef, like Tony. I’m a natural foodie, we have amazing food in Traverse city, but we don’t have a lot of ethnic diversity. Two important things to me are Food and Charity, why wouldn’t I try to combine them? I shared these thoughts with my attorney friend, who lived in Flint, and he said, ‘You have to meet Tony,’ It was Serendipitous, we found a shared vision.”

Shane Harvey just celebrated his 3rd year in business! That’s quite an accomplishment, for his Harvey’s Donut & Deli, a little-hidden gem, tucked alongside South Garfield Ave. He’s pretty famous for his maple bacon donuts and custard long johns. Make a note for Fridays, he sells them for only ten bucks a dozen, until they are gone. Shane is a 2011 graduate of the NMC Culinary School. “After working at Jolly Pumpkin for a while, I wanted to do my own thing,” says Shane. With the help of his mom, Deb, behind the scenes, they took over what was once a donut shop. He had also managed a deli before, so decided on Donuts and Deli. “We wanted to set ourselves apart, we only use Boars Head meats and cheeses, Bay Bread, soups made from scratch, everything is fresh daily,” beams Shane. He got his feet wet with a dry run renting all the equipment, but he fell in love with it. “I bought all the equipment, it’s been a learning experience, it’s good, but it is a lot of work,” laughs Shane. Not bad for a 28-year-old. He’s been a savvy marketer too; he runs daily sandwich, soup, and salad specials. His Thursday French Dip sandwich with homemade Au jus has local taste buds hooked. Pre Summer Wine Tour With the extended winter we all witnessed in Northern Michigan in recent weeks, it’s hard to believe that the heart of our tourist season is nearly upon us. It is a great time to get out and enjoy one of our most cherished gems, the wineries. If you’re like me, I don’t take advantage of all the wonderful wineries on both Old Mission and Leelanau peninsulas nearly enough. WOMP or Wineries of Old Mission Peninsula, offer up 10 tasting rooms, delicious wines and incredible views. Some favorite stops are Bowers Harbor Vineyards overlooking beautiful Bowers Harbor. Stop in for a taste of their Pinosecco. A lightly bubbly and refreshing wine made from 100% Pinot Gris. You can also travel just a bit further out Old Mission Peninsula and check out 2 Lads Winery. The view from the tasting room is also exceptional and you can enjoy it a bit more while tasting their Rose of Cab Franc. A must try. Heading out M22, you are beginning the Leelanau Wine Trail. Boasting 25 wineries to choose from, you won’t have to travel far to find an outstanding wine experience. One of my favorite stops is Mawby Vineyards. Larry has been crafting world class bubbly for decades. Stop in and give his Blanc de Blanc a try. This is one of my personal favorites. Travel a bit further north at stop off at Aurora Cellars. A quaint Tuscan styled winery with beautiful countryside views. Their Pinot Noir is delicious. Enjoy the travels in Northern Michigan before the crowds. She Sails is a safe, fun, and supportive learning environment. where every student can feel comfortable learning to sail.

How many ladies to a boat? This year I am limiting it to 4 plus me. 5 total. I’m doing that, so they can learn more. Plus we will be adding a smaller boat to the mix of boats we sail.

Learning to sail is intellectual, physical, and emotional. Some of my She Sailors have fears to overcome and want to feel empowered through sailing.

How did the She Sails idea get started? It started in Key West around 2009. I started a women’s sailing group there and called it She Sails. So, when I moved here in 2014, I got with Sally Rivard of TACS and Dave Conrad of Great Lakes Sailing Co. to make it a reality here. I am working for both companies; TACS and GLSC. 28

For a beginner what should they expect? A She Sailor can get involved as much or as little as they feel comfortable. They can expect me to keep them safe while they learn from each other, with my watchful eye, of course! I know I have won the day when women walk away smiling, feeling good about sailing wanting to learn more.

Set out on a leisurely drive, get off the grid for a while and allow your mind to wander. For over a hundred years people have taken this momentous journey to the tranquil waters of the esteemed jewel of Walloon Lake. Even the famed writer Ernest Hemingway once called this lake home. In 1891, the inn was called Fern Cottage. It was a destination for many visitors who trekked for hundreds of miles to enjoy the beauty of the lake. It also served as a docking point for the steamboats that would take the travelers to hotels or their cottages on the lake. Renamed the Walloon Lake Inn in 1981, the Inn operated as bed and breakfast, as well as a restaurant. Walloon Lake suffered a tragic economic downturn in the recession. But thanks to Grand Rapids developer Johnathon L. Borisch and his son Matt, it’s back on the map. They have spent the last few years rescuing the village where they both spent boyhood summers. Now, Walloon Lake is a proud destination once more. It was a gamble they made from the heart with no guarantees. The town had been reduced to only one staple business, a longtime general store. Their vision was to restore it to its former grandeur, pouring in capital, high hopes,

and big dreams. All centered around the gravitational pull of the beautiful lakefront. Their gamble paid off and years of developing, investing and planning have transformed the town to thrive. Walloon Lake has a bustling little downtown area that is fun to visit, shop, play and eat. In 2013, they opened the Barrel Back restaurant, above Tommy’s Michigan, a watersports store on the marina that rents 60 boat slips. The dynamic duo has launched many other ventures since then, so adding to their lakefront domain, they purchased the historic Walloon Lake Inn. With the original building still intact, Matt Borisch chose to do a complete renovation, turning the Inn into a prestigious waterfront restaurant. A different character from Barrell Back and an interior that is a polar opposite of the usual cottage coastal whites and nautical blues, found in most lakeside dining places. This is fine dining at its best, high class, top notch and attentive service. Its upscale ambiance is reflected in the menu prices, full disclosure. The intimate setting is dramatically different, luxurious and

striking, reminiscent of an exclusive old-fashioned VIP gentleman’s club. The lavish wall décor is dark wood paneling that frames ornate wallpaper. Guests are treated to live music serenaded by pianist YoungMin You. Next to the piano sits the elegant circular bar, with just enough room to for a privileged few. Sit and sip a Rosemary Martini, served up, or a carefully chosen glass of exquisite international wine. This dazzling view is matched only and possibly outshined by the mouthwatering dishes and first-class service you will experience at dinner. Chef Randy Hopkins’ cuisine will wow you. The sustainable highest quality of ingredients served are all locally hunted and gathered, organic in the purest of forms. It is the ultimate farm, to field, to table encounter. Chef Randy knows many of the farmers that furnish the goods. His friends pick morel mushrooms and even the honey drizzled over the cheese appetizer is homemade by a

Chef Randy’s delicate hand cooks these treasured items allowing the flavors to sing. Simply prepared and seasoned ever so slightly they burst with freshness. He finishes his plated canvases of cuisine with the talented eye of an artist. Every plate is served with pride, and each one delights and entertains the three senses, of sight, smell and taste.

It is not a vast extensive menu, and it exclusively caters to finer palates, dedicated to excellence, never hurried and serving only the finest and freshest of ingredients. It’s a culinary joy, and if you are a selfproclaimed Foodie, you have to try it.

f the idea of team rowing only conjures up images of men’s Ivy League elite colleges such as Harvard, Yale, and Oxford, think again. Girls at the high school level are transforming old perceptions with a new age of female rowers. It is growing rapidly as rowing has become more accessible and gained more exposure through area rowing clubs and high

school programs, causing a heightened awareness in recruiting for colleges. These smart girls are exploring new avenues of college opportunities, with rowing swiftly emerging as silver lined boat with forward pushing oars, it is propelling these determined young ladies to scholarship success. Get your girl in a boat!

Local Traverse City dentist, Dr. Tom Salon, laughs as he remembers his daughter’s introduction into rowing. “Kacie was twelve, and she was in school at Pathfinder. I saw something about girls rowing and signed her up. She hated it at first, mainly because it was mostly grown-ups and out at Lake Leelanau.” Sticking to her oars, five years later she is an inspiration, earning a grant for tuition to Adrian College. Her dad caught the rowing bug so much, he is now training to become an assistant coach with the TC Tritons Team. It was Tom, who introduced us to the fun story idea. So, on a chilly April evening, we jumped into his Boston Whaler boat on the Boardman Lake to watch their practice. It was only the second day of training on the water, as we shadowed alongside shooting photographs, we got to witness firsthand the sheer concentration and intensity the girls sustain. It was highly evident in rowing that team-work does make the dream-work. No timeouts or switching out, no going rogue, or singled out superstars. You are in a boat; you have to oar as if your life depends on it. There is no going back, and you are in it, to win it. 38

Five colleges in Michigan, including The University of Michigan and Michigan State, all have formidable rowing teams. If you have an indecisive daughter entering high school, this is fantastic news. The TC Tritons have already sent three unwavering young ladies, including Kacie Salon, on to colleges with full and partial rides. As other team sports have become completely saturated, Hope Floats, for rowing the popularity is rising like a fast tide. If your daughter already loves being on the water, this could be your family’s compass pointing in the direction of forward North. A unique opportunity to plot out an academic course to potential success.

Traverse City rowing will make a big splash soon, as the TC Tritons get ready to take over Medalie Park on the Boardman Lake totally. We chatted with their high school coach, Chris Bott.

“We are so excited; it will be what we like to call The Center of Rowing in Traverse City!” With the fundraising already done, work is underway to build four boat racks, two oar racks, equipment shed and the all-important floating dock. The boats, fueled by robust girl rowers, will become a familiar scene as you pass by the Boardman Lake. With that bird’s eye view of the rowers in action, watch in awe and total respect. To even make it inside a boat, these crews of five have endured a grueling training plan. They are pressed to perform at a vigorous pace and meticulously taught to push themselves harder than they ever thought they could. Think of Winston Churchill’s famous quote, Never Give Up Never Surrender! There are no girly girls, and it is not for the faint-hearted. “These girls are really tough,” laughed Tom as we followed alongside. Let us give you the basics of Rowing 101 “Rowing is about Intensity, Power, Desire, and Drive, this is what teach them,” says Coach Chris. It’s one of the few sports that doesn’t discriminate from all shapes and sizes, but it does take the willpower of a superhero to condition your body, mind, and spirit to look effortless on the water. It is the ultimate team sport; rowing is where strength and determination meet synchronization, everyone is working together for a common goal. The target is the end of the race and to perform as fast as possible. “You can’t miss a stroke, your timing can’t be off, or the boat will rock,” says Chris. “It is a head to toe endurance sport,” says Chris.

It’s a full body workout, which impacts nine major muscle groups, according to Josh Crosby, a former member of the U.S. National Rowing team. Those include quads, hamstrings, glutes, laterals, core, shoulder, triceps, back and biceps.

“You have to overcome an enormous challenge, a typical Regatta Race of 2000 meters is eight minutes or less, but it’s physically the equivalent of playing two basketball games back to back in a row. You have to learn to row at an anaerobic stage, to push through when your heart is racing, your muscles are burning, and your oxygen intake lowers.”


Chris goes on, “In comparison to other sports you have a quick break on the sidelines to catch your breath. In rowing, the last 500 meters are brutal and freestyling is not an option. One person tries to go it alone, and the entire boat suffers. It is the truest form of teamwork.” As if this wasn’t hard enough they face the wrong way? When you are rowing, you are propelling the boat in one direction, while facing the other. Huh? Coach Chris gets a kick out if Launching at the TACS docks in Hull Park, on the Boardman Lake this, “I laugh with the kids at the start, telling them we have the best sport because you are sitting down going backward, it’s the only sport where you see your opponents when you are in the lead. You get to watch the race from the front,” he says. Of course, you have to work your oars off, to be all the way out leading at the front.

This is where their most significant team member, the coxswain, plays a vital role. They are seated low at the stern of the boat and are the eyes and navigators of the four-team rowing machine. Outfitted with a microphone to yell out commands and motivation, while also harnessing the power of the boats steering. As Chris explains, “They have to promote leadership, see when things are going right, and can see that things need to be fixed and find solutions.”

On the water, when everything and everyone is in perfect synchronization, these half-inch thick carbon fiber hull boats, are super stealth. They glide effortlessly along, at an alarming pace. This fluid stride doesn’t come easy or happen by chance. Long before the girls hit the water, seated snug inside a boat they endure immense training on rowing machines. The equipment precisely analyzes their performance statistics, down to meticulous detail. These findings are carefully scrutinized, and the girls are vetted into novice, junior varsity, and varsity placements.

Potential scouting colleges examine these results specifically for performance and endurance. They can establish the heart rates of aerobic stages versus the higher elevated level of anaerobic, where oxygen consumption drastically changes. This higher level is where an elite athlete excels; it becomes the breakthrough goal as the girls are pushed physically, mentally and emotionally on the water.


Off the water, the girls are also being primed for successful futures. While being molded for the sport of rowing, the life lessons these girls encounter shape their entire lives. The concepts of core values; immense discipline and absolute teamwork. As the girls grow to adulthood and enter the workforce, team-work and self-motivation are the foundation of any strong work ethic. In short, becoming a grown-up, any parent would be proud of. Boys can get in on the action too. The TC Tritons also have a boys’ team they are recruiting for. Coach Chris tells us, “The full body workout makes it the perfect Spring sport for Winter Football players and Ice Hockey players. They cannot duplicate the intensity in the gym,” he laughs. The TC Tritons also have a middle school program for younger water enthusiasts. What other sport can you take in the beauty of Northern Michigan with a waterfront view as you cheer on your kids to succeed? In a race, in their health and well-being, in further education and a firm foundation to build the rest of their lives upon. Get your kids in a boat! Summer has arrived! With proper planning and a little warm weather, you can make your living areas much more spacious for the summer months by expanding them to the outdoors. Living in an old home downtown, my hubby, myself, pups Emma and Liz and guests hang out on the porch much more than indoors. When designing my porches, I had to decide on the proper materials for the “porch floor” that would not only achieve the look I was going for but withstand our icy winters. I decided on a natural wood, Ipe, that does not require any finish material, just a simple oil to keep it looking good. Other products I considered were exposed aggregate or stamped concrete. Both are very durable, interesting to look at and have enough texture to not become slippery when wet or icy. For those of you not living in the city, back decks are a very popular way to extend your hang out areas. Incorporating a small cooking and dining area along with some space for soft seating gives you a kitchen and living room all in one! Having a beverage refrigerator or drawers built into a grilling area keeps you from having to run inside to refill your cold drink. The most popular 48

decking materials are typically natural wood like Ipe or composite material like Trex products. If your deck is going to be exposed to a lot of sun, work with a light color as the dark ones will be hot on bare feet. For railings, clear glass or stainless cable are still the most popular choices. Use some fun color fabrics for your furniture, add some planters full of flowers, a little cocoa mulch in your landscape for fragrance and you just might design your favorite “room” in the house!

e asked local builder Eric Render, of Render Construction to share one of his most rewarding and challenging projects. The home that vividly came to mind is a Glen Lake beauty. Every home holds a story, this one, sitting on the spectacular shores of the Sleeping Bear Dunes held many. Treasured family memories and a sentimental attachment that a Northwestern Michigan College professor was slow to say farewell to, finally transitioning the cherished house over to the Beauregard family from Bloomfield Hills. The house was dated, and needed upgrades, but their youngest son was still in high school, and they decided it wasn’t the right time for a big project. They had spent only three weekends at the summer retreat when the devastating storm of August 2nd in the summer of 2015 hit. It uprooted everything in its path devastating the Glen Arbor area, for miles around.

In our pages we have told these stories of historic homes, memories lost, grieving families forced to rebuild everything they once knew. The Beauregard’s felt bad for their neighbors, but they didn’t have any emotional attachments, to the building or the landscape.

“They also wanted the house to look like it was born there, ‘not like it landed,’ is how Molly had explained it. They wanted the house to look like it was added onto several times as if it were originally built in the early 20th century.” explains Eric. The construction phase is lengthy and arduous. After the foundation is poured, and the structure is framed, and months of work have already been completed, the real work begins. The custom home industry is incredibly demanding yet extraordinarily rewarding. To excel and achieve success in this trade, it requires excellent craftsmanship and vigilant attention to detail. Imagine this; you have to juggle and perfectly balance a myriad of factors that include; architects, designers, employees, contractors, countless subcontractors, wholesale suppliers, deliveries, deadlines, permits, inspectors, inspections, weather restraints, people, personalities, budgets, and accounting. All to ensure very happy homeowners. And let’s not forget, many of those homeowners do not live close by, and most are living in temporary circumstances, causing wicked high anxiety.

This is no easy task the raw elements to re-create this distinctive style are not readily available in Northern Michigan.
