here goes another summer in the memory bank. We treasured every sun soaked second knowing that the days are numbered from the minute they begin. We squeezed in boat time, beach time, paddle time, swim time, party time and amazing Interlochen Summer Concerts. We asked for your photos to share our readers Kodak moments inside our pages for all to see. You’ll find three pages in a salute to friends, family and neighbors all Living the Northern Dream. So, we say a sad farewell to the long days, warm nights and endless fun. We are saddled back into work mode, hello again to routines, schedules and school night curfews. It feels good because I must admit I am a total control freak by nature with a little OCD thrown in for good measure. Plus, we are super duper overwhelmed with magazine work. It’s a good problem, we meticulously planned it. The time was right and our instincts were correct. In the corporate world of big business, the term is Supply and Demand. After launching our magazine five years ago as a free magazine and printing and distributing 350,000 publications since. We could finally guarantee our magazine had reached many more kitchen islands, front porches, coffee tables, guests rooms and additional new readers than ever before. The official term is a controlled circulation. We proudly direct mailed a few thousand to your home mailboxes (the one at the end of your driveway, not clogging up your email one). Wowzah, what an incredible response, we have heard from so many people who spent time at home to browse the pages of Baylife at their leisure. The words and pictures represent a constant reminder of our breathtaking area, and the amazing people, that choose to call it home. We are a family company,

The most iconic is American Spoon, their quaint stores sit on the main streets of our favorite destination towns. It’s always a store on the must do list when friends and family come to visit. American Spoon Foods corporation has attained national success, notoriety and has won countless prestigious awards and remains family owned. All these accomplishments built on making Jam. Not just any jam, awesome best in the world kind of jam. Like any great product, it has a great story. We were lucky to sit a while with founder Justin Rashid and his son Noah, where candidly they shared the behind the story, story. Which I hope makes for as much an engaging read, as it was to hear the story first hand, on a sunny day in Petoskey. Next, we got to hang out at a brewery, that has been whipping up a coastal storm ever since they began just a few years ago, Stormcloud Brewing Company in downtown Frankfort. Again, we got the scoop straight from the horse’s mouth in a sit-down chat and tour with the owner Rick Schmitt, half of the dream team, which started it. My take away from both inspirational people was, do something you love to do, have a vision and a goal. Have a plan, work your plan and stick to it. Become the best at what you do, be honest and work hard. As we all get back to our real life, with real routines, it's a great reminder that at the end of the day a truly successful life comes from good old fashioned hard work, with a passion for what you love, and who you love. At school, at work, and at play. We love living the Baylife with you, and we are working harder than ever. We hope you will enjoy receiving us in your mailbox. Your Day Job is a serious news man; however, you are putting on your dancing shoes for charity with Swingshift & The Stars. Give us three words to describe your thoughts? 1.) Uncoordinated 2.) Undeterred 3.) Uninhibited What words of encouragement have your two teenage sons given you? Without hesitation, they both told me that I should do it. I am not sure they have ever seen me dance, but we play enough basketball together that they know how lousy my footwork is. Now that I think about it, I have serious questions about their motivation to see me take the dance floor. What is one thing people don’t know about you that would surprise them? I have a Master’s degree in freshwater ecology. I had plans to wear waders and grow a beard when I graduated college. Instead, I ended up in a career where you have to wear ties and put on makeup.

Growing up what did you want to be? I wanted to be Maverick from Top Gun or Rocky Balboa. It turns out I have a slight fear of heights and am prone to motion sickness…. and don't like being hit or drinking raw eggs… What is one quote you live by? "just do it." It’s so cliché…. but Nike got it right. It applies to everything from making your bed in the morning, to finish an Ironman triathlon. Don't overthink it. What is one thing checked off your bucket list? Qualifying for the Boston Marathon. I ran my first marathon in 1995. I wasn't a runner by any stretch of the imagination. The Chicago Marathon ran in front of my apartment at the time. I saw them run by in 1994 and decided I would do it the next year. I finished, it wasn't pretty, but I finished. In the process, I caught the running bug. It took more than 20 marathons and almost as many years before I could run a marathon fast enough to qualify for Boston. As a journalist, if you could interview one iconic person from the past or living who would it be and why? In the current situation, it seems like I should say Fred Astaire or Patrick Swayze. Maybe they could give me some pointers.

A Swinging Challenge Over the past nine years, Judy Harrison and her energetic team at High Impact Productions have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for community charities with the Swingshift and the Stars dance off. Local celebrities were paired up with a non-profit, donning dance shoes with a task to learn and execute four different dances over four months. Now they celebrate their 10th year, the chips are all in, they are GOING BIG and they’re not going home. Swingshift is bigger and better than ever, with more dancers, more

Owners Paul Carlson, Andrea Deibler, and Genine Silverman came up with the concept while working together at 9 Bean Rows. Red Blends Summer has once again come to an end, with hopes of a delightful Indian Summer, the cooler weather tends to change our wine and food palates. The cooler air lets us shift gears from some lighter brighter wines to more full-bodied bottles. Over recent years you couldn't help but notice an abundance of "Red Blends" on the shelves. Wine varietals have been blended for centuries, such as the world-famous Bordeaux’s, however, the newer versions are spanning a broad range of profiles allowing winemakers to create some sensational wines. One of my favorite blends comes from Januik Winery from Columbia Valley in Washington State. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Franc, Jaunik Red Wine is very well balanced showing bright berry and cherry flavors along with notes of chocolate and baking spice. If you are looking for something similar from Northern Michigan, you should give Brys Estate Cab Franc / Merlot blend from Old Mission Peninsula a try. A blend of 50% Cab Franc and 50% Merlot this wine shows similar flavors of bright berry notes, medium bodied and lush on the finish. Either way, these wines are delightful. Happy Sipping. Fall Eye Opener Miracles Do Happen! Would you believe getting Eye Lash Extensions cut my morning beauty routine down to 5 minutes? Plus, kiss goodbye to those scary no makeup moments out in public. Lucky us, we don’t need a passport to claim our Belgian adventure, just head to Stormcloud Brewing Company. Here beer lovers from near and far have braved the storm and have happily discovered there is indeed a tranquil calm after the storm.

It has been four years now since Stormcloud Brewing Company blew into downtown Frankfort in 2013. Owners Rick Schmitt and Brian Confer have brewed up quite the storm. Daring to open a restaurant and onsite brewery that stays open all year round, not just a summer romance that’s gone in the winter. Brian is the head brewer crafting and creating, fermenting yeast and hops to perfection, an art he has mastered over many years. The idea of having a microbrewery specializing only in Belgian Ales came early, as there weren’t many around. Evidently, to us non-beer drinkers, Belgium is among the top beer-drinking countries in the world. Belgian Ales are revered for their exceptionality, as the re-fermenting process is so critical. The arduous work

Inside and out you will encounter “a place full of energy, friendly faces, multiple generations, games, music, laughter. It’s a place to come and be engaged,” says Rick. The evidence of the good times to be had is all around. From their outside garden, resembling the most happening block party, to the insides casual and low-key vibe with a little vintage thrown in. They host theme nights, movie nights, karaoke nights and just plain old spontaneous nights. There is an old piano at the ready and they are always brewing up something in the back and the front. This addictive atmosphere isn't by chance; It is carefully crafted and planned, all because of Rick’s strong marketing background coming from the Crystal Mountain Resort. Stormcloud's historic building boasts a rich history of gaiety and frivolity, dating back to the 50’s and 60’s. Back then it was a pub and grill named The 7 Spot. Apparently, this place has been brewing up fun times for decades. They even named the 7 Spot Amber Ale in homage to days gone by. Faithful to the Stormcloud name, you will be blown away with the choices of exclusive brews on tap. Nightswimmer, and a plethora of others. You would never believe all this Tap Mogul Mania started out so humble, in Brian’s old photography Dark Room to be exact. It was a happy accident as Brian’s background was commercial photography. As the digital age hit, he realized his profession was changing. In 2004, he met Rick at a photo shoot for Short's Brewery, and he chatted with owner Joe Short. With that encounter, he became more intrigued and motivated to start brewing. Here the storm began to roll in slowly.

His dark room was obsolete in the world of instant digital photography. The room already had everything he needed to set up a brewery. There he spent years perfecting his recipes. “Brian is very much a scientist and an Artisan, he basically brewed Rainmaker Ale every week for three years," recalls Rick. In 2009 when Rick purchased the old

Frankfort movie theatre Brian had an idea, which he shared with Rick. “Wouldn’t it be cool if right next door we opened a place?”, he’d said. “I wouldn’t say he convinced me, but we started to think maybe this could work,” laughs Rick. The stars finally aligned in 2013 and they opened their doors. When we sat with Rick, he laughed at the amazement that he had just signed 75 employee paychecks. They have also just expanded and opened a larger offsite facility, taking them from an eightbarrel system to a twenty-barrel system with lots of growth potential, including canning and packaging. The expansion should keep them weathering storms that brew for the next five years at least. It’s a whirlwind of growth, and the brewery has become a beloved place for Micro Brewery Enthusiasts.


Faithful to the Stormcloud name, you will be blown away with the choices of exclusive brews on tap. Their one of a kind brews start the thunder, then their mouthwatering dishes hit you like a bolt of lightning, blasting your taste buds and adding the wind to your sails. The menu is fresh and exciting with unique and imaginative names and ingredients. “We initially thought we would just be all about drinks, with a light food menu but they are about equal. Our restaurant is something to be proud of, it has a tiny kitchen, and our chef challenged us," says Rick. One of their Highlights is Pizza’s made from flatbread dough with added Stormcloud beer. Try the Thai One On made with garlic herb oil, Thai curried shrimp, roasted corn, mushrooms, green onion, parmesan cheese, and a Thai peanut drizzle! That's just one of eight yummy choices. Soups, Salads and Such, push the taste envelope to the extreme, including local farmers market veggies, house made chicken salads, coleslaws, pimiento cheese, pickles and more. There are Little Bites for snacking that include their famous nachos named Stormchos

with Great Lakes corn tortilla chips topped with pulled pork, BBQ sauce, jalapeno, sriracha and melted chipotle queso sauce. Don’t forget the Brat Bites which are Stormcloud Beer Brats made at Honor Family Market, wrapped in beer dough. Beer and Brats, is there any other better pairing? But wait, there’s more, each menu item lists the ale to enhance the flavors and your experience. The last question is obviously, how the heck did they come up with the name Stormcloud? As Rick explained to me, "it would have been very easy to name it geographically, but we decided something called Point Betsie or Great Lakes could be limiting over time. Brian came up with Stormcloud. It's coastal in nature, its four seasons, and as a storm builds it evokes motion and emotion." So, let the wind carry you to the quaint town of Frankfort to encounter this captivating Stormcloud for yourself because when it comes to beer, food, fun, and frolic, here, the sky is the limit. Founders Justin Rashid and Chef Larry Forgione were true pioneers, pursuing a niche with what they loved to do. So, when we sat down with father and son team, Justin and Noah Rashid, we wanted the story behind the story. How the heck does a Northern Michigan Fruit stand owner even meet a hip New York Chef in the first place? “It’s Serendipitous,” replies Justin. It was the 1970’s in New York, the age of Studio 54’s disco era. Thousands of people dream to be an actor, and Justin in his early 20’s chased that dream all the way to the stages of Broadway. For every actor that make it, thousands don't and fall back on a plan B going back to Main Street America. Justin and his young wife Natalie were doing well in a performing arts company, but he was restless. Realizing returning home to

Michigan was inevitable. He was determined to write his very own screenplay of life and be successful on his terms. "I grew up in a family business, so I have always felt like I was living in someone else’s play, so to speak,” says Justin. He grew up enjoying summers in Wildwood at his family’s log house in Indian River, it felt like a beautiful place to settle. “It was all about where we wanted to live, and how we wanted to live,” recalls Justin.

They met a lot of people along the way, including two sisters from Columbus Beach. “This is where serendipitous comes in,” laughs Justin. They all became great friends. One sister had dreams of becoming a dancer and moved to New York. Of course, like most stars in the making, she became a waitress, at a restaurant underneath the Brooklyn Bridge named The River Café. On a fun note, chasing fame and fortune, alongside at the time was actress Gena Davis.

They are committed to their promise and their story. Summers by the coast, time spent visiting their charming little stores, sampling their mouthwatering preserves and gifting yourself and friends, taking home a few jars. The young dancer/waitress took a short visit back to Petoskey, as Justin drove her back to Pellston Airport heading back to New York. She realized she had forgotten to get local mushrooms for the young ‘crazy intense' new chef. “He’s going to be so mad,” she had said. “No worries,” replied Justin. “I have been picking Black Morels since I was 13 years old, I’ll send some,” he promised. He filled a cooler full of them, shipped them to La Guardia Airport, where the young chef, Larry Forgione picked them up. “He was so excited, saying how he couldn’t find this type even in Paris, and asked what else did I have?” laughs Justin. Justin was on a mission outdoors, foraging, gathering wild mushrooms, wild nuts, berries, wild greens and purveying farmraised vegetables and game. Anything to wow the New Yorker. “It was 1979 and Larry was into the lure of Regional America style cooking,” says Justin. To keep Chef Larry enthralled, fresh buffalo fit the bill from Jerry Olsen in Traverse City. But he would only sell the whole Buffalo and would only ship it frozen. Larry came to Northern Michigan to try and strike a deal.

He flew into Pellston and was in awe. “He didn’t know there was anything between The Rockies and The Appalachian,” laughs Justin. As they drove, Larry asked, "we have been driving for over an hour now, and that water is still there, how big is it?" To which Justin replied, "it's big, that's why it's called a Great Lake." Then he saw rows upon rows of trees in rolling hills. "Those are orchards," informed Justin. To which Larry replied, "Oh, can you make Jam?" “Yes, I can make jam, I haven't made it in years, but I used to with my mom, you send me a recipe, and we'll make jam," laughs Justin, as he recalls the birth of American Spoon. Back in New York, The River Café had a booming Sunday Brunch menu; there were no real American jams, they were all from England or France. "It was a lengthy process and a learning curve,

we made six different fruits," says Justin. Once perfected, it reached the famous chef James Beard, who was Larry’s mentor. This lead to the affluent and respected retailer Dean & Deluca to pick up the product. After this catapult to foodie fame, they needed to make a lot more jam. This part of the story you already may know, in the basement of a building on Howard St. Petoskey, they purchased big copper kettles and wooden paddles. The aromas would waft up to the street level, which eventually led to a storefront of their own on Lake Street. More have opened over the years, with the same model in quaint coastal towns. Chef Larry bowed out just a couple of years ago and is cooking Farm to Table at the Culinary Institute of America in Napa Valley. “Thirty-three years is a pretty good run,” laughs Justin.

David Krause's stunning oil canvases are almost as colorful as his journey that brought him to Northern Michigan. "In the fall of 1964 I was all ready to graduate and become a professional golfer," he laughs. Of course, that all changed when he received his draft letter. He became an officer and enrolled in the flight program. “I was an Air Navigator and a Bombardier, so it pretty much destroyed my golf career,” he recalls. Luckily David had a degree in fine arts and design, to fall back on. He revisited the greens as a golf course architect. “That led into landscape architecture; I worked for a firm for two and half years. Because I was stubborn, and I guess have an ego, I decided I could do this myself," he laughs. From the years of 1970 – 1995, he designed major

"I was afraid of oil painting, so I started out with acrylics," commercial projects nationwide. The famous Mall of America even tops his resume. In 1995 the Detroit, Michigan native retired with his wife to Northern Michigan. Where he finally got to play his beloved game of golf. “I got bored, and started to grow ornamental trees,” says David. It wasn’t until about 2005 that he first picked up a paintbrush, "I was afraid of oil painting, so I started out with acrylics," he recalls. He didn’t like them, finding them too opaque and fast drying. Ultimately, he found his perfect stroke with oils. "I started really small with 6" X 8" canvases painting trees, being a landscaper, they seemed like they would be easy," he laughs. As with anything design, new approaches to lighting your home are in demand.

From a technical stand point, the emergence of LED products has really opened the door to options for lighting cabinetry, built-ins and other accent areas of your home. The key to getting it right, is to make sure the Kelvin rating is around 2700-3000K. This will most emulate the warm white tones of incandescent lighting and blend best with fixtures that are not LED. You may opt for a higher rating for task lighting, but be aware that unless all your fixtures (including your can lights) are LED, the light quality will have a noticeable difference when the fixtures are turned on together. The Edison bulb currently rules in Decorative lighting. The trend of actually seeing the mechanics of the fixture is very popular with the bulb being center stage. When using these fixtures, you may need to supplement the area with additional lighting. The wattage is classified with the same rating as a standard incandescent, but most will warn that the application is for ambient light. Sconces in the bath will not put off enough light to apply makeup and other bathroom tasks. Inserting a can light or two will make up the difference, but as noted with the LED bulbs, they may produce 2 52

different light qualities that you may be sensitive to. From a design stand point, anything goes! No longer do we worry about all the finishes being the same. Clusters of lights vs. a single large fixture also looks more interesting. Some fixtures having clean lines, while others being a smidge rustic or industrial in the same setting will make your design interestingly eclectic. So, use the lighting of your areas to set a mood and define your personal style!

C

an you imagine buying two lots on the water’s edge of iconic Torch Lake for two hundred dollars? The year was 1923, and the lucky land-owner was Sally Dickey’s grandfather, Dwight Bailey. Here he built a precious little 800 sq. Feet cottage, with white cedar shakes and blue shutters. Unforgettable memories of summers spent on the lake would follow year after year. Even after Dwight passed away in the 1950’s, his beloved wife Lulu would continue the family tradition, until 1992. Lulu passed the torch tradition to Sally’s mom, Helen Brown for many more years to come, until she sadly suffered a stroke. This tiny cottage was a time capsule of moments to hold dear and reminisce. Leading to its third generation with Sally. After meeting Greg and marrying in 1977 in Denver Colorado, they spent their honeymoon on the lake. "We came across on the ferry, and we had a little puppy," laughs Greg. With all these moments captured in time, it was a painful reality they finally had to face. The cherished cottage needed to be torn down and rebuilt, so it could last for the next generations of family to come. SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017 BAY LIFE NORTH

They didn’t come to this decision lightly. After Sally and Greg had bought her sisters share of the cottage, the first thing on the list was to update and remodel. Don’t feel too bad; her sister lives beside the waters of West Grand Traverse Bay by Bowers Harbor on Old Mission Peninsula. Sally and Greg still lived in Denver, and their two grown daughters had migrated to Arizona, making this Torch Lake retreat even more coveted, to bring them all together for family summers.

The open concept amplifies the beautiful view.

The teeny cottage was lacking air conditioning and heat, the bedroom sizes were eight feet by eight feet, and the only real view of the lake was to sit outside on the wraparound porch. Sally and Greg spent over a year with an architect, trying to make changes with the cottage still intact. It finally proved too difficult to work around, and they began new plans from scratch. Working with Aaron Draper the owner of Draper

Construction, they designed it. What they envisioned came together in just a few meetings. The lot was narrow, and the septic only allowed for three bedrooms. “We still wanted the look and feel of the old cottage. The most important thing was to take advantage of the view. From here you can look ten miles from both directions,” says Greg. It was a bittersweet demolition day, and as luck would have it, Sally was unable to be in Michigan to witness the event. “I cried a little, but once it was gone, we knew it was the right thing to do. It was an uncomfortable cottage,” recalls Sally. The land also housed a garage with an unfinished attic, building upwards, they used the original structure. In a pure coincidence, Aaron realized as a young man he helped build it, back in 1995, when working for acclaimed local builder Jim Deater. “Aaron is so

talented, he has an eye for design, and everything has to be even,” laughs Greg.

They created an entirely selfsufficient apartment. It’s around 550 Sq. Feet, and is simply adorable. It was a smart move planning ahead to redesign and build this first, once finished they lived here and had a bird’s eye view of the houses daily progress. Today it is the envy of their daughters to snag it as the prized guest room. "Whoever gets here first gets to claim it," says Greg.

Next is the sleek and stylish kitchen, custom designed by Angela Goodall owner of Kitchen Choreography in Traverse City. Fabricated exclusively with the Fieldstone Cabinetry brand at Sally and Greg’s request. They had recently remodeled their Denver, CO. kitchen and loved its high quality.

The focal point of the home is the spectacular glistening waters of Torch Lake. Wall to wall windows of tranquil turquoise serenity. “We don’t get the morning sun, but we get incredible sunsets, everything inside blazes red and orange,” says Greg. The beautiful repurposed old kitchen sink takes pride place in the powder room.

sit two priceless leaded window panes. “My dad did stained glass work, and they were in a buffet built-in inside the cottage,” explains Sally. This original accent creates a sentimental journey, irreplaceable items in an unexpected place. It is one of many, that maintain treasured recollections of the old cottage. They add character and spark family stories and memories of yesteryear. "The kitchen still had the 1920's wallpaper in the kitchen. We were just so happy it wasn't declared a historical site," laughs Sally. “We repurposed and repainted many pieces of furniture,” says Sally. Including the kitchen sink, used most uniquely, for the sink and counter top in the powder room. The dining table was Sally's Grandmothers. "We found the extra leaves in the garage, they were never used, the table had to be round to fit in the cottage,” says Sally. It’s now complete with recovered dining room chairs, surrounded by matching wrap around window banquette seating. “I didn’t think I would like it at first, but I love it,” says Sally. Sally’s mom loved white wicker, so it’s peppered all around, along with revamped dressers and mirrors in the guest rooms. Grandma's vintage rocking chair even takes a pride place in the living room overlooking the view. In the homes two bathrooms, three, four pane glass windows are brought back to life with an entirely new view. “I truly think my mom would think it’s great, I told her as we started and she was okay,” recalls Sally.
